NBA Rumors: NYC Mayor Reveals Stance On Kyrie Irving's Eligibility - NBA Analysis Network

Kyrie Irving, Brooklyn Nets, NBA News
NBA Analysis Network

The Brooklyn Nets have been without NBA superstar Kyrie Irving for all of their home games throughout the 2021-22 season. There’s been recent optimism about the landscape of the COVID-19 vaccine mandate being lifted in New York City, but that has reached an obstacle at this point.

On Sunday night, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported there is an expectation for a loosening of Key2NYC mandate as being “another step” in Kyrie Irving getting closer to being cleared to play Brooklyn Nets home games “this season.”

“Kyrie Irving remains restricted from playing under NYC mandate for large employers, but March 7 loosening of Key2NYC mandate is another step in what’s expected to be an inevitability Irving will be cleared to play this season,” Wojnarowski reported.

“It would send the wrong message to have an exception for one player when we’re telling a countless number of NYC employees, ‘If you don’t follow the rules, you won’t be able to be employed,’” Adams said on CNBC.

LATEST NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: ‘Unstoppable’: Embiid, Harden Duo Thriving For Sixers

The Nets’ cooperation with the Philadelphia 76ers in the James Harden trade was made in part due to the outlook of Kyrie Irving being eventually becoming eligible to play in home games. Now, the Sixers have an elite duo that is firing on all cylinders while the Nets face uncertainties in regards to Irving’s status.

While it’s challenging to predict what Kyrie Irving will end up deciding to do in the offseason, it’s important to take into consideration that Brooklyn passed on giving. him a contract extension before the start of the 2021-22 season.

LATEST NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: ‘Unstoppable’: Embiid, Harden Duo Thriving For Sixers

The only certainties surrounding the Brooklyn Nets are the long-term contract status of Kevin Durant and Ben Simmons, and Kyrie Irving eventually being cleared to play home games in New York City as a member of the team.

When evaluating the stretch-run of the season, the Nets find themselves in the play-in tournament after collapsing while Kevin Durant has been sidelined with injury. His return is expected to occur this week and Ben Simmons is ramping up in his efforts to return to competition, but regardless, the team needs Kyrie Irving in the lineup for home games to maximize their outlook.

FIBA WC: Boomers impose might on Akatsuki Five to go to 2-0 - Tiebreaker Times

The Boomers of Australia turned it up in the third quarter, leading to an 80-64 win over the Akatasuki Five in the 2023 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, Sunday at Okinawa Arena.

Holding just a 42-40 lead at the half, Nick Kay – who plays for Shimane in the B.League – sparked a 9-0 rally to put Australia in the driver’s seat.

Besides Kay, it was the trademark defense of Australia that paved the way for the rout. It limited Japan to a horrid 3-of-14 shooting during the third canto for just nine points.

Australia, meanwhile, went 10-of-17 from the field, pounding their way in the interior to gain a 64-49 lead.

It was all Australia from there as its lead swelled to as high as 21 points, 80-59, after a Kyle Zunic trey with 1:01 left.

Australia went up to 2-0 in Group B to tie China while Japan dropped to 1-3. Japan is already qualified for the World Cup.

Kay led four Boomers in double-digits with 15 points to go along with 11 rebounds and seven assists.

Angus Brandt, who plays for Toray in the B.League, had 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Meanwhile, Kyle Zunic and Alexander Mudronja each got 11 points.

Emmett Naar glued things together with 11 assists while Craig Moller hauled down 10 boards.

Yuki Togashi of Chiba was one of the few bright spots for Japan, finishing with 19 points and five assists. Luke Evans added 11 points, six rebounds, two assists, and a block.

Matt Aquino makes national team debut as Japan escapes Chinese Taipei - Rappler

Filipino-Japanese center Matt Aquino made his national team debut for Japan in the 2023 FIBA World Cup Asia qualifiers second window as the “Akatsuki Five” escaped Chinese Taipei, 76-71, at the Okinawa Arena in Japan on Saturday, February 26.

Despite the close game, the current Shinshu Brave Warriors import of the Japan B. League still managed to crack the rotation and finished with 2 points and 1 rebound in under 4 minutes of action.

Aquino – the son of PBA legend Marlou Aquino who has Japanese lineage on his mother’s side – checked in for his debut with 1:43 left in the first quarter, and tallied his first two national team points with 29 ticks left in the frame.

Overall, it was 22-year-old Yudai Nishida who led the way for Japan with 27 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks, and drained the game-winning free throws with 2 seconds left to set the final score.

Luke Evans chipped in 17 markers, 12 boards, and 4 dimes in the win, while Kuei-Yu Chou paced the loss with 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting.

This is Japan’s first win in the tough Group B of the Asia qualifiers, which include China and Australia alongside Chinese Taipei. They will be back in action immediately on Sunday, February 27 to face the Aussies.

Like the Philippines and Indonesia, Japan is also one of three countries assured of a 2023 World Cup spot by way of host country privileges. All countries, however, are still required to join the qualifying rounds. – Rappler.com

Ravena, Ramos steer Gilas to 24-point win over India in World Cup Qualifiers - GMA News Online

Thirdy Ravena and Dwight Ramos did not waste any time in their homecoming, as they steered the Philippine national men's basketball team past India, 88-64, to open their FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers campaign on Friday.

The pair of Japan B.League imports led the charge for Gilas Pilipinas with Ramos posting 17 points, four rebounds, and three assists and Ravena adding 15 markers - including three three-pointers.

Ramos, who suits up for the Toyama Grouses, first took care of the business as he accounted for seven of the Philippines' 18 markers in the opening frame while they limited the visiting country to 13.

Then, the San-en Neophoenix's Ravena caught fire in the second period, where he notched 11 points, including all three of his triples, to push their lead to 44-32 at halftime.

During that huge second quarter run, NorthPort guard Robert Bolick also added two triples.

An RR Pogoy basket then brought Gilas ahead by 20, 65-45, before a buzzer-beater three-pointer by the debuting Kib Montalbo put them up by 21 at the end of third, 68-47.

Well-rested at the start of the second half, Ramos again gave the Philippines an 83-59 cushion with less than three minutes left in the game.

Will Navarro put the icing on the cake for Gilas with two free throws, 87-61, to hand the Indians another blowout loss in the tournament following a huge 101-46 loss to New Zealand on Thursday.

Pogoy also provided a spark for Gilas as the TNT guard poured in 12 points while Bolick had 10 in his first game for the flag since the 2019 World Cup.

India, meanwhile, got solid performances from Sahaij Pratap Singh Sekhon and Prashant Singh Rawat who had 14 and 13 points, respectively, even as they sank to 0-2 in Group A.

Gilas, on the other hand, is at 2-0 with a forfeiture win over South Korea, which was unable to make it to the tournament due to issues with COVID-19.

The scores:

Philippines 88 - Ramos 17, Ravena 15, Pogoy 12, Bolick 10, Montalbo 8, Navarro 6, Kouame 6, Erram 5, Williams 4, Gomez de Liaño 3, Rosario 2, Rangel 0.

India 64 - Sekhon 14, Rawat 13, Bhriguvanshi 9, Krishnan 7, Hafeez 6, A.S. Singh6,  P. Prince 5, P.S. Singh 4, M.B. Manjunatha 0, Kumar 0.

Quarterscores: 18-13, 44-32, 68-47, 88-64.

Kia MVP Ladder: How will the James Harden addition impact Joel Embiid in race? - NBA.com

The addition of former Kia MVP James Harden to the 76ers could have an impact on Joel Embiid’s MVP case.

• Tonight on League Pass: Harden makes debut in Minnesota (8 ET, League Pass)

Philadelphia’s official injury report dropped Thursday night with no mention of newly-acquired guard James Harden, which means he’s expected to make his 76ers debut at Minnesota on Friday.

Typically a mainstay on the Kia Race to the MVP Ladder, Harden deserves mention here simply for the impact he might make on the Kia MVP candidacy of Sixers big man Joel Embiid, who remains locked in a tight race with Denver’s Nikola Jokic for the No. 1 spot as we open the second half of the season.

“Well, I don’t want to push for the whole thing, but the way I’ve been playing speaks for itself, especially with everything we went through, the drama this whole year, and obviously missing a big piece, and everything we added to our team, and the way our team is set up,” Embiid said during NBA All-Star weekend. “So, [I] really had to take my game to another level, whether it’s offensively, defensively, or playmaking. Obviously, I’ve got great teammates that give their all, and that’s helping a lot.”

Well, Philadelphia added one more in former MVP Harden, who joined the team at the trade deadline in a deal with Brooklyn that included sending former teammate Ben Simmons to the Nets.

Keep in mind, Harden hasn’t played since Feb. 2 due to hamstring tightness. Still, Embiid expects to build chemistry quickly with Harden, who should lighten the load somewhat for the big man on offense.

“James Harden has been a league MVP and all that, [won] scoring titles, so he has experience,” Embiid said. “I think it’s going to be easy to build that chemistry. Everybody is on the same page. We all are trying to win a championship. So, that’s the goal. I think it’s all about everybody just staying healthy, getting on the floor and us getting together and really playing together.”

Philadelphia embarks on that journey Friday night at the Target Center.

The 2018 MVP averaged 22.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 10.2 assists in 44 games this season with Brooklyn. His scoring numbers represent his lowest production since 2012. Harden practiced with the team Thursday in Minneapolis, and at this point, it’s unknown whether the superstar guard will revert to MVP form once he hits the floor with Embiid, who entered Thursday night’s games as the league’s leading scorer.

As we reset the Kia Race to the MVP Ladder coming out of the All-Star break, you’ll see one change among the top 5, spurred partially by the news that Chris Paul will miss considerable time with an avulsion fracture in his right thumb, and DeMar DeRozan’s amazing recent tear of games with 35 points or more on 50% or better shooting.

DeRozan blessed us with another vintage performance in Thursday’s win over Atlanta that caught the attention of plenty of his peers like Donovan Mitchell, Paul and Harden. DeRozan jumped up five places to fourth from No. 9, while Jokic maintains his razor-thin edge over the surging Embiid.

And now, the Top 5 this week in the 2021-22 Kia Race to the MVP Ladder:

1. Nikola Jokic, Denver Nuggets

Last ranking: No. 1

Season stats: 26.0 ppg, 13.8 rpg, 7.9 apg

Nikola Jokic goes for 25 points, 12 rebounds and 9 assists in his first game after the All-Star break.

Jokic put up 25 points to go with 12 rebounds and nine assists in Denver’s win over Sacramento on Thursday, before presenting the game ball to Michael Malone to celebrate the coach’s 300th victory. The Nuggets have won four in a row with Jokic collecting 15 or more rebounds in four of his last five games, while scoring 25 points or more in four consecutive outings. Embiid spoke about what he’s gone through this season, but he hasn’t faced the same adversity as the reigning MVP. Four Nuggets sat out of Thursday’s game, and they’ve been missing two starters virtually all season.

2.  Joel Embiid, Philadelphia 76ers

Last ranking: No. 2

Season stats: 29.6 ppg, 11.2 rpg, 4.5 apg

Joel Embiid goes off for 42 points and 14 rebounds against the Bucks.

Embiid’s numbers in every major statistical category jumped since our last edition of the Kia Race to the MVP Ladder, and we’re just waiting to see how the addition of Harden affects the already monstrous production. Sixers coach Doc Rivers plans to keep at least two players between Embiid, Harden, Tyrese Maxey and Tobias Harris on the floor at all times to make sure the team has consistent firepower on the offensive end. That’s a scary proposition for opponents over the second half of the season. Embiid racked up 40 points or more in two of his last three games going into the All-Star break.

3. Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks

Last ranking: No. 3

Season stats: 29.4 ppg, 11.2 rpg, 6.0 apg

Giannis Antetokounmpo drops 50 points and hauls in 14 rebounds against the Pacers.

The man scored 82 points on 30 shot makes in his last two games going into the All-Star break, including a 50-piece the day after Valentine’s Day. His 21 field-goal attempts ranked as the fourth-fewest in a 50-point game in NBA history. The Bucks won’t open up the second half of their season until Saturday, when they host the Brooklyn Nets (8:30 ET, ABC). That means Antetokounmpo should be well-rested after going hard on the floor at the All-Star Game.

4. DeMar DeRozan, Chicago Bulls

Last ranking: No. 9

Season stats: 28.3 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 5.1 apg

DeMar DeRozan scores 37 against the Hawks, continuing his streak of 35+ points on 50% shooting from the field.

Clearly, we ranked DeRozan way too low in our last Kia Race to the MVP Ladder two weeks ago. But we couldn’t ignore the fact that last week, DeRozan became the first player in league history to rack up 35 points or more shooting 50% or better for the seventh consecutive game, only to extend that streak (the greatest Bull of all time, Michael Jordan, never accomplished that feat) to eight Thursday against the Hawks. Chicago captured its sixth-straight win and hosts Memphis on Saturday before hitting the road for matchups at Miami and Atlanta.

5. Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors

Last ranking: No. 5

Season stats: 25.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 6.5 apg

Stephen Curry puts on an MVP performance in the All-Star game with 50 points, including 16 makes from deep.

The shooting numbers remain low by Curry’s standards. He hit 42.8% on field goals and 37.8% from deep in the 54 contests before the All-Star break. He then showed us all during the All-Star Game to never count out a true shooter (Curry drilled an NBA-record 16 3-pointers). In his first game back from the break, Curry connected on 5 of 11 from the field and 2 of 7 from range in a win over Portland. But the point guard ramped up his playmaking, dishing a game-high 14 assists, just two fewer than the Trail Blazers produced as a team.

The Next Five:

6. Devin Booker, Phoenix Suns (Last ranking: No. 8)
7. Ja Morant, Memphis Grizzlies (Last ranking: T-6)
8. Luka Doncic, Dallas Mavericks (Last ranking: T-6)
9. Chris Paul, Phoenix Suns (Last ranking: No. 4)
10. Jimmy Butler, Miami Heat (Last ranking: 10)

And five more (listed alphabetically): LeBron James, Los Angeles Lakers; Zach LaVine, Chicago Bulls; Donovan Mitchell, Utah Jazz; Jayson Tatum, Boston Celtics; Karl-Anthony Towns, Minnesota Timberwolves.

Kib Montalbo flexes two-way skills in Gilas Pilipinas debut against India - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – Kib Montalbo wasted no time impressing his Gilas Pilipinas teammates, coaches, and fans in his national team debut on Friday, February 25, against India.

In under 16 minutes off the bench, the TNT Tropang Giga stalwart flexed his two-way skills en route to 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal in an 88-64 blowout win in the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.

Outside the box score, Montalbo also provided much more value with his trademark hustle, harassing defense, and steady playmaking.

While some may see this as an eye-opening outing especially for a first-timer, Gilas head coach Chot Reyes is not the least bit surprised of what his feisty ward can do even at the international stage.

“I’m very, very happy for Kib, but honestly I’m not surprised because that’s the type of player he is,” he said after the game.

“He knows his role [as] he comes in off the bench hounding the opposing ball handler, but the good thing with Kib is that he has rounded off his game now. You just cannot keep him open.”

After draining a corner three early in the first quarter for his first Gilas points, Montalbo chipped in the national team’s third-quarter breakaway run with a highlight offensive board and putback layup against the towering Indian bigs.

The former La Salle star even provided the highlight of the night, and sent the Araneta Coliseum crowd into a frenzy after he drained a near half-court bomb to end the third quarter with a 21-point lead, 68-47.

With one more game in the Manila window against New Zealand on Sunday, February 27, Reyes will continue to trust his young point guard to help Gilas aim for a possible upset win.

“[His teammates] trusted him, and they found him in open spots. Kib simply delivered and did what he normally does,” he said.

From college, to the pros, and finally now at the world stage, Montalbo has maintained a fire that every team would love to have on their side. The “puso” spirit is alive and well in this new generation of Gilas Pilipinas. – Rappler.com

Airthings Masters: Carlsen, Nepo make final - Times of India

Magnus Carlsen and Russia's number 1 Ian Nepomniachtchi set up a repeat of their world title battle in the Airthings Masters final on a day overshadowed by outside events. Nepo was among three Russians who had made it through to the last four of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour event before their country's invasion of Ukraine overnight.
Despite the turmoil, all three expressed the desire to continue in the competition. However, it was clear world events had affected them. There was a sombre mood among all the players as Nepo finished his quarterfinal off against his fellow Russian, the 19-year-old Andrey Esipenko. In chess terms, he did it with a flourish, but there was little celebration.
Nepo, appearing from his home in Moscow, said his play was "very, very bad because I can't think". He added that he had to "just rely on intuition". "Every day is a challenge and today, yes, I would say especially."
Carlsen, meanwhile, had a dream start with two wins against Vladislav Artemiev and then secured the draw he needed to go through. Carlsen and Nepo now face each other again after their World Championship match in Dubai, which Carlsen won.
Carlsen said he'd also been following world events and described himself as a "concerned bystander".

DeRozan drops 37 on Hawks, Bulls extend winning streak to six - Bulls.com

Bulls fans can stop with the MVP, MVP serenades for DeMar DeRozan.

It's about time to start declaring, Hall of Fame! Hall of Fame!

Yes, the Remarkable DeMar did it again Thursday, 37 points including a dozen in the fourth quarter and the effective game winning three-point play to give the Bulls a two-point lead with 15.1 seconds left in the Bulls eventual 112-108 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Nikola Vucevic then forced lead scorer Bogdan Bogdanovic into a missed three with a long, hard closeout on what might have been the game winning three. Javonte Green secured the rebound and two free throws for the final margin and sixth consecutive Bulls win.

The Bulls now are 39-21 back in first place in the Eastern Conference and facing the Memphis Grizzlies Saturday in the United Center. Zach LaVine contributed 20 points. Vucevic and Ayo Dosunmu, the latter with sturdy defense on Trae Young (three of 17 shooting) and a vital block on Young with 26.5 seconds left, each had 12 points. And Tristan Thompson in his Bulls debut fit snugly in the rotation with 11 points and six rebounds in 13 minutes.

As DeRozan began to earn a place among the game's immortals.

DeMar DeRozan hits a clutch midrange jumper to secure the win over Atlanta on Thursday night.

DeMar DeRozan hits a clutch midrange jumper to secure the win over Atlanta on Thursday night.

DeRozan's eighth consecutive game with at least 35 points on 50 percent shooting extended his record farther past Wilt Chamberlain's run. And with scoring at least 35 again, DeRozan joins Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and James Harden as the only NBA players ever to produce like that in consecutive games.

It's reminding me of the 1980s and 1990s in Jordan's great scoring runs when the lead to every Bulls story was something like, Michael Jordan led the Bulls to victory with a game high...

"Smooth criminal, smooth criminal," Thompson offered with what certainly was praise. "Deebo, he's one helluva player. He's playing lights out. That basket is looking the size of Lake Michigan to him. He's knocking them down. He only missed, what, six shots tonight? If that's not efficient, then I don't know what is.

"Like I said in the interview yesterday, in my eyes he's the MVP of our league," Thompson continued. "He's playing at an MVP level. People need to give him his credit and give him his flowers because of what he's able to do with this team. When things are getting stagnant and we need a big bucket or a big time shot, that's what big time players do. I've played with some big time players. When it's money time, you give them the ball and they make something happen. That's what he's been doing night in and night out. Tonight we were down four with under two minutes left and Javonte getting the rebound and making those free throws and DeMar with the and-1. That's what the MVP of the league does. We're going to do our best to keep riding that horse. It's a blessing to be watching greatness."

And then Thompson topped DeRozan.

Tristan Thompson finishes a ferocious dunk in his Bulls debut against the Hawks.

Tristan Thompson finishes a ferocious dunk in his Bulls debut against the Hawks.

Not on the court, though Thompson's presence was the missing factor of physical presence the Bulls often have lacked this season. But DeRozan just did what several other NBA players already have, though they are the pantheon of NBA excellence.

Thompson declared what likely no one in the NBA ever has, that Dennis Rodman is his hero and role model on and off the basketball court.

Be like Dennis?

Thompson isn't quite Rodman, though his desire to deliver Rodman's hustle and effort is commendable. It is just what the Bulls will need in the playoffs.

"I idolize Dennis Rodman, idolize the Worm," Thompson said asked about his inaugural comment Wednesday about being another Rodman. "He was the first person, I believe, in this league, in NBA history, to be a star in their role. I remember saying that, ‘Be a star in your role,' when we were on that run in Cleveland, making the championship runs. He was the definition of being a star in your role, and that's something I wanted to embody in myself and my game."

It's not exactly accurate since the NBA has a long history of Rodman kind of rugged role players, if not as dominant rebounding. The Bulls had Charles Oakley. Names like Maurice Lucas, Paul Silas, Bill Bridges, Clyde Lovellette and Jim Loscutoff come to mind. OK, perhaps just to my mind. But like Bluto in Animal House—no, I'm not done with 70's references—Thompson was rolling. No reason to stop him.

"I remember (being) in the playoffs," Thompson said. "I used to watch his clips for five minutes before every playoff game, his activity, keeping the ball alive, being relentless, to put that fire inside of me. The fact I'm able to put on a Chicago Bulls jersey and go out there and try to make Dennis proud. That's all l'm trying to do. He's a Hall of Famer, a guy I look up to the way he plays; everything he does in life I look up to. He's great. It's an honor.

"They need to retire that 91. C'mon now, let's get to it. I always buy his merch(andise), support him. His vintage shirts are pretty cool. Big fan of Dennis, the Dennis Rodman!"

So imagine what Thompson might have to say on his fifth day as a Bull.

Hard to believe this season is getting better.

It certainly looked like it was when the Bulls began the game 10-0 and pretty much controlled the entire game.

And then were about to lose.

Tap to watch highlights from Chicago's 112-108 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

So these Bulls without Lonzo Ball, Alex Caruso and Patrick Williams still aren't quite playoff ready. But coming out of the All-Star break during which DeRozan, LaVine and Dosunmu participated and showed few ill effects, the Bulls looked like they got a bit better. Ever the demanding teacher, Bulls coach Billy Donovan before the game wasn't so much impressed with the record as concerned with the passive defensive efforts generally being bailed out by DeRozan.

Not the ultimate formula for success, Donovan suggested.

The Bulls defended well to start, high scoring Atlanta with just six points in the first seven minutes and kept under 30 percent on threes for the game. Donovan emphasized defending threes better, and the Bulls responded with active closeouts, Vucevic's at the denouement the highlight.

"Defensively, I thought the way we started the game was really, really good," said Donovan. "There was a time in the third quarter we were giving up too much at the basket. I thought the fourth quarter was much better."

The Bulls led 24-19 after one quarter with DeRozan tallying 16, his most for a quarter this season. Yeah, that All-Star weekend must have been tiring.

Thompson moved quickly into the backup center spot and just as quickly was a factor finishing on a Coby White pass as the Bulls got ahead 38-27. But the Hawks with their size on the wings kept misses in play (24-9 in second chance points) and repeatedly were able to get Clint Capella with 14 points and 17 rebounds rolling off pick and rolls for lob scores.

Atlanta drew within 52-50 at halftime and took its first lead of the game midway through the third quarter. With DeRozan regaining his energy for his fourth quarter role, LaVine kept the Bulls tied after three at 82 with a dozen points in the third quarter. Thompson closed the third with a pair fo offensive rebounds leading to four free throws.

Tap to listen to postgame reaction from Bulls coach Billy Donovan following their sixth straight win.

"I thought he was great tonight," Donovan said. "He (Thompson) was great on the bench. When you've been around the amount of winning he has, been around championship teams, you gather an understanding of the things that go into winning and I think DeMar has that, too. Tristan's voice on the bench, on the court, was really impactful and the way he played. He was in the huddle talking about being more physical. And when he did get in there, he really had a presence. We gained a little control of the game and he gave us good minutes considering he's had just one day of practice and is learning to play with everybody."

But then you sit back—or set some good screens—and watch DeMar work.

The Amazing One got into the fourth quarter with three consecutive baskets to start, backed off enough to see Dosunmu with a pair of scores and White with three, including a pair of crucial three pointers. But with Bogdanovic and Danilo Gallinari finding mismatches for scores, the Hawks scored on seven consecutive possessions for a 108-105 lead with 1:35 left. It also was when they won a challenge on a potential jump ball for possession. And then got another offensive rebound. But Young slipped trying to create a play and the Hawks couldn't get off a shot before the 24-second violation.

It still was Atlanta by three with 58 seconds left.

Fans could have been leaving at that point knowing the Bulls would win.

It was DeMar Time.

"What he's done, however many games it's been, really it's been the whole year, he's just been remarkable," enthused the usually unenthusiastic Donovan. "Incredible, his poise and calmness in situations is amazing."

DeRozan eased into a 19 footer with 46.9 seconds left—no, he almost never misses—and then Dosunmu stayed with Young and blocked his driving attempt.

"Ayo did a great job," said Donovan.

Then it was not just talent and instinct but intelligence.

The Bulls got the ball trailing by one with about 24 seconds left. The typical strategy then usually is to run down the clock for a good shot with perhaps a chance for an offensive rebound, but not to leave the opponent much time.

But DeRozan dribbling up court quickly saw what the Hawks were planning, his CPU processing the data quicker than anyone could react.

Dosunmu also got the rebound of the block and handed to DeRozan, who began dribbling up and surveying the Hawks defense. Bogdanovic was picking up, but DeRozan apparently could see Kevin Huerter to the left creeping over to double and likely force the ball to someone else. DeRozan always has said he's comfortable making the play for someone else. But the truth is when you're on a roll like that, make a play. That really is what making the right play is about. Not as some say inviting the defense and putting it the hands of maybe Dosunmu or Vucevic, who were stationed in the corners. It's the flaw in the conventional wisdom these days often mentioned as making the right play. The right play is when your best player takes responsibility.

"You love it and you hate it," DeRozan said. "Of course, you don't want to be down and have the pressure on yourself to try to pull out a game. But when you're in those moments, you've got to take it on. I love the moments. I love the challenge. I love the opportunity. It's fun to me."

So DeRozan sped up, darting quickly toward the circle, and then spinning left toward the elbow and away from Huerter's late help. DeRozan took a step in along the lane on the left side near the high post about 13 feet away, spun and went down fouled as the ball settled through. The free throw made it 110-108 and then Vucevic forced Bogdanovic into a higher arc than necessary for the miss.

"Just tried to concentrate; they hit me," offered DeRozan. "Made the shot and the free throw."

Yup, just like that.

Tigers place four players on FanGraphs’ new top prospects list - Bless You Boys

One of our favorite points in the preseason calendar is the release of a new FanGraphs top 100 prospect list. There aren’t any big surprises in this year’s edition from a Detroit Tigers’ perspective, but it’s always instructive to read their commentary. In the larger scheme of things it’s also the perfect entrance point into following prospects and farm systems for fans interested in broadened the scope of their baseball habit.

The top prospect in baseball is now Baltimore Orioles catching prospect Adley Rutschman, who FanGraphs had third last year. The 24-year-old reached Triple-A in 2021 and continues to show the makings of a plus hit, plus power catcher with outstanding defensive ability. Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco hit the big leagues with an impressive rookie campaign in 2021 after holding the top spot prior to the season. San Diego Padres lefty Mackenzie Gore was second on FanGraphs list this time last year, but had a rough year plagued with minor injuries and plummeted a whole scouting grade down to a 50 future value (FV) tag.

After Rutschman, Kansas City Royals shortstop prospect, Bobby Witt Jr. checks in second overall. With the ability to stick at the position and bone-crushing raw power, he’ll likely be fun for the Tigers to deal with in the AL Central soon. The fruits of Baltimore’s run of miserable seasons is clear in Grayson Rodriguez, FanGraphs third-ranked prospect. Graded a 65 FV, Rodriguez is a pretty spectacular young pitching prospect and gives the Orioles the best 1-2 punch of any farm system in the game. Seattle’s Julio Rodríguez, a strong corner outfielder with huge power and a plus bat, checks in at fourth overall, the last of the prospects graded more than 60. As they always emphasize, the grade tiers are far more meaningful that the individual rankings within those tiers.

Still, it’s nice to be ranked highest in the 60 FV tier, as our favorite, 1-2 punch in the minor leagues comes with Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene, ranked fifth and sixth overall. The prospect team of Eric Longenhagen, Kevin Goldstein, and Tess Taruskin had some high praise for the Tigers young hopefuls.

On Torkelson,

His raw power is near or at the top of the scale, but he’s also a sound hitter with a compact swing and feel for barrel control, with some scouts projecting a future plus hit tool once his closes up some holes at the bottom of the zone.

On Greene,

His swing has a controlled ferocity (Greene has remarkable lower half flexibility) that creates all-fields spray, and comes with enough raw juice to put balls out toward either gap.

At this point, the accolades are familiar. The confidence is what stands out. No one can be sure if Torkelson or Greene will be really good or even great players, but there is a lot of consensus that both are likely to be good major league regulars at least. This is the theme of the Tigers season. They’re about to add two good young position players to a squad that was surprisingly strong in 2021. With the timing coming together, they went out to add a pair of good free agents, and a new era of Tigers baseball is now underway.

Probably the most interesting note from the Tigers’ perspective is that 2021 third overall pick Jackson Jobe is ranked 33rd overall in baseball. Now that draft philosophy debates over position players versus pitchers in the draft have quieted, the simple fact is that Jobe is a really good young pitching prospect. Marcelo Mayer, who the Tigers passed on, ranks 19th, but with a 55 FV grade over Jobe’s high 50. Don’t sweat it. There are no safe bets with pitchers, but you still have to draft them too. Jobe has fantastic stuff already, and the Tigers are willing to bet that his athleticism, mentality, and work ethic will carry him the rest of the way.

Welcome to pro ball, Mr. Jobe. Also, hey how about Manuel Sequera?

The final note for the Tigers was catcher Dillon Dingler, ranked 108th. He still gets a 50 FV grade, like Jobe, so the organizational does have four 50 or better prospects, which is a better crude measure of the top of a farm system than pure rankings. The strong defensive profile, combined with solid power, overall athleticism, and a still developing bat make him one of the better catching prospects in the game, even if that bat has a lot to prove yet.

In the end, prospect lists can never be more than rough guidelines, as there are just too many variables involved for any group to be really accurate. FanGraphs consistently does a fine job and explains their methodology in great detail, and their list is well worth a read. As for the Tigers, rumors of the imminent demise of the farm after Greene and Torkelson graduate are probably over-stated, as the organization does have far more talented, but not yet heralded, young players to work with than we’ve ever seen in the system. Certainly at the top of the scale the organization will need some things to go their way to continue producing top prospect talent, but we have a feeling the new player development staff will surprise the industry this year with some breakouts. Obviously the goal is to win MLB games and titles, not prospect lists, but it will be interesting to see how the Tigers measure up again a year from now.

The Orioles farm system collects another rave review with six top 100 guys - Camden Chat

Hello, friends.

Top prospect list season continues with rave reviews for the Orioles system. Yesterday saw the unveiling of the 2022 top 100 prospect list from FanGraphs. This brings the most aggressive view yet of the quality of the Orioles system at this exact moment. It’s hard not to get at least a little bit swept up in the hype.

Six of the top 69 prospects on the list belong to the Orioles. Six! Both of these aspects surprise me. I did not expect to get more than five top 100 Orioles this time around, and that’s what some of the earlier lists brought. However, the recent ESPN top 100 list as well as this FG list had a sixth: Coby Mayo, a player I figured was a year away from top 100 contention. It seems that many in the prospect-industrial complex are already driving the Mayo bandwagon.

It’s Mayo who checks in at #69 on FG’s list. The other five prospects are the usual suspects: Adley Rutschman, Grayson Rodriguez, D.L. Hall, Colton Cowser, and Gunnar Henderson. Rodriguez has his highest ranking yet, checking in at #3. Really! So on this list, the O’s have the #1 overall prospect in Rutschman, and the #3 prospect, who is also the best-placed pitching prospect. Hall’s ranking (#27) as well as Cowser’s (#40) are also aggressive relative to a number of other lists that have been published over the last six weeks.

Ultimately, this is just one set of people’s opinions about the system, filtered through their own personal observations as well as whatever they’ve gleaned from people who are their sources. There are players they’ll be presciently correct about and players they’ll be hilariously wrong about.

Orioles prospects have no special quality just by virtue of being Orioles prospects to avoid the odds that even a number of top 100 prospects still end up as busts. Henderson and Mayo, for instance, are each labeled as having at least a 40% chance to bust. It is unlikely that all six of these players will be contributors on a string of contending Orioles teams 2-6 years from now. But it’s nice to dream. And maybe if the Orioles are lucky they’ll get four of them working out.

The one consolation prize I’ve been mentioning for months now about the ongoing owner-imposed lockout of MLB players is that unlike the pandemic, at least it’s not disrupting most minor league players. The prospect development will be able to continue at roughly the same pace as it would have with no lockout. One exception here is prospects who are already on the 40-man roster. That group includes Hall. He can’t play until the owners say players can play.

Recently deceased singer Meat Loaf said two out of three ain’t bad. Five out of six is even better. But in this case it still stinks for the sixth guy who’s going to be left out of development time. Hopefully there’s a resolution soon and we don’t have to worry about Hall missing out on much of anything.

I won’t be holding my breath, though. The owners, who initiated the lockout and are the only reason it is continuing, threatened players that if there’s no deal by February 28, games will be canceled and not made up, meaning players will get less than their full salaries for the season. Maybe it’s all bluster while the work is getting done in the room, or maybe it’s a sign this thing is nowhere near over.

Around the blogO’sphere

Two more Orioles spring training storylines (School of Roch)
Roch is thinking about Terrin Vavra and Cesar Prieto. Vavra is on the 40-man roster, so he won’t be a part of the minor league spring training that opens next week. The recently-signed Prieto will, so perhaps there will be some news about him.

Jordan Lyles could be the right choice for the Orioles rotation (Baltimore Baseball)
Only a bad set of choices could lead to Lyles being the right choice. The Orioles may have presented themselves only with that bad set, but they did not have to do this.

A conversation with Grayson Rodriguez (FanGraphs)
I get more excited about Grayson Rodriguez every time I read someone else talk about him and also every time I read him talking about himself. I hope we see this guy in uniform in Baltimore before season’s end.

A conversation with Mike Elias (FanGraphs)
There are a heck of a lot of pixels going up about the Orioles on FanGraphs this week. It’s nice to have all the attention on the team for a good reason for once.

Oriole of the Day: Power surge not enough to mask Rylan Bannon’s Triple-A struggles (The Baltimore Sun)
Nathan Ruiz’s ongoing 40-man roster series’ most recent entry covers Bannon, one part of the Manny Machado trade return. Bannon had a stretch of ten home runs in ten games, then wasn’t very good the rest of the time. If you’re looking for more 40-man content, our own series will cover Ryan McKenna later today.

Birthdays and Orioles anniversaries

There are a few former Orioles who were born on this day. They are: 2017-21 catcher Chance Sisco, 2015 reserve 1B/RF Chris Parmelee, and 2007 seven-game catcher Gustavo Molina.

It’s also the birthday of one of the six Hall of Fame players known chiefly for their Orioles accomplishments: Happy 66th to Eddie Murray, still the all-time MLB career leader in sacrifice flies with 128. Albert Pujols got close (117) but was not able to usurp this lead in the way he did Cal Ripken Jr.’s former lead in GIDPs. I’m not old enough to have memories of Murray’s prime years with the Orioles, which is no reason for me or anyone else not to know that Eddie was, is, and always will be the man.

Is today your birthday? Happy birthday to you! Along with one of the six players in both the 3,000 hit club and 500 home run club, your birthday buddies for today include: Revolutionary War loser John Burgoyne (1723), baseball Hall of Famer Honus Wagner (1874), World War II admiral Chester W. Nimitz (1885), actor Abe Vigoda (1921), Nike co-founder Phil Knight (1938), actor Edward James Olmos (1947), Apple co-founder Steve Jobs (1955), and women’s hockey pioneer Manon Rhéaume (1972).

On this day in history...

In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII delivered a bull entitled Inter gravissimas, which announced and established the Gregorian calendar system still in use worldwide today.

In 1803, the Supreme Court issued a decision in the case Marbury v. Madison, establishing a precedent for judicial review. You might have heard the name in a history class once or twice.

In 1917, during World War I, the American ambassador to the United Kingdom was shown a telegram sent from Germany to Mexico in which Germany promised it would return New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas to Mexico if it declared war on the United States. The Zimmermann Telegram helped generate support for American entry into the war in April.

**

And that’s the way it is in Birdland on February 24. Have a safe Thursday.

Drex Zamboanga braces for challenging move to lightweight - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – Drex “T-Rex” Zamboanga knows that he’ll take the biggest test of his professional career when he makes his lightweight debut against Rahul “The Kerala Krusher” Raju in the lead card of ONE: Full Circle on February 25 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Not only is he making his debut in a new weight class, he’s moving three divisions higher. He last fought in the flyweight division in 2020 when he submitted Detchadin “Detchpool” Sornsirisuphatin in the second round.

However, he believes the jump is necessary for his career as he wants to maximize his frame and size, something that he can no longer do at flyweight.

“My conditioning coach gave me that idea to try it out at lightweight because I felt like being at flyweight is unhealthy for me. At the same time, it’s risky. I’m a big man. I’m 5’11 at flyweight. I can’t maximize my strength in matches,” he shared.

“Most of my fights came at 61 kgs. It has always been doable, but my conditioning coach suggested that I move to a higher weight class.”

Still, he admits that this move brings a lot of uncertainties, and that’s something he’s been preparing for.

“Actually [the adjustment] is the most challenging part for me. This is the first time I’ll be stepping in this weight class. I don’t have the experience yet in facing a legit lightweight in an official match, so that’s one thing I have to look out for,” he added.

It’s also worth noting that he’s not facing a walk in the park in his lightweight debut.

Raju is a grizzled veteran who has competed in the promotion since 2018, and experience is something he brings to the table having faced the likes of like Garry “Lion Killer” Tonon, former ONE Featherweight World Champion Honorio “The Rock” Banario, and Amir Khan, among others.

“When I searched for his fights on YouTube, he really has a ton of fights. The number of matches I had is nothing compared to his. I think that’s going to be our gap – the experience,” the Marrok Force mainstay revealed.

“He already has a lot of fights. At the same time, I’m also new in lightweight. So yeah, we really don’t know what will happen.”

Uncertainties aside, Zamboanga is trusting the process as he believes that with great risk comes great reward.

After all, as long as he remains on his toes while preparing for this bout, he believes that he’ll be in a good place come fight night.

“In this fight, I have also increased my strength and conditioning. I focused on my strength and conditioning program in this fight so I won’t feel uncomfortable in this new division,” Zamboanga mentioned.

“Now’s the perfect time to test my skills in the lightweight division. But looking at my camp, things are going well.” – Rappler.com

Catch  ONE: Full Circle on One Sports at 8:30 pm Philippine time on Friday, February 25. One Sports+ will cut into the main card at 9 pm.

The lead card will broadcast live on the ONE Championship Tagalog Facebook, ONE’s YouTube channel, and the ONE Super App at 6 p.m. PHT.

Steph's huge All-Star Game might be exactly what he needed - NBC Sports Bay Area

Steph Curry missed his final six shots Sunday night in the 2022 NBA All-Star Game.

OK, buzzkill.

We know the Warriors superstar, in his eighth All-Star Game, put together an historic performance in Cleveland with 50 points. He made a record 16 3-pointers, crushing the previous record of nine, which was held by Paul George. Curry just missed breaking Anthony Davis' scoring record of 52, which happened in the 2017 game.

Steph broke two records in the first half alone when he hit six 3-pointers in a quarter, and eight in a half.

His record-breaking night that helped raise over $100,000 for the Cleveland Metro School District, earned him the All-Star Game's Kobe Bryant MVP award.

"I mean, Steph, come on, man," LeBron James said Sunday night to reporters. "This guy is from a different planet. "He literally has an automatic sniper connected to his arm. When he lets it go, not only himself, but everybody on the floor, in the stands, on TV, on their phones, whatever you are watching on, you think it’s going in every time. Nine times out of 10 -- and sometimes 10 times out of 10 -- it does go in.

"To be out there and watch that kid from Akron as well shoot the ball the way he shot it, it was unbelievable. It was pretty cool."

Though he had to ignore boos from Cavs fans, Curry enjoyed every second of putting on a show in a game where he also was honored as one of the NBA's greatest 75 players of all time.

"I got hot early and kept it going and tried to put on a little bit of a show," Curry said. "The joy started to come out, and hopefully everyone appreciated it."

Curry catching fire in the All-Star Game might have come at the perfect time for him and the Warriors, too.

Before dropping a 50-piece, he had scored at least 20 points three times in his previous seven All-Star Games. But he averaged only 13.5 points between his first two appearances in the game, scoring 12 in 2014 and 15 in 2016. In 2016, as the Warriors were crushing their competition and Curry was changing the game into something nobody had ever seen, he put up 26 points in the All-Star Game and went 6-for-13 from 3-point range. That was a career-high for points and 3-pointers in the event for Curry at the time.

And his hot shooting continued in his final 29 games of the regular season.

Over that span, Curry averaged 30.6 points, 6.8 assists and 5.6 rebounds per game while shooting 49.8 percent from the field and 45.4 percent from deep. That helped him win his first scoring title by averaging 30.1 points. The Warriors went 24-5 in those games as they went on to win a record 73 regular-season games, Curry won his second straight MVP and became the first unanimous vote in NBA history.

Do I really need to mention what happened in the Finals against LeBron and the Cleveland Cavaliers?

Moving on.

The next year, Curry scored 21 points in the All-Star Game and went 5-for-11 on 3-point attempts. He also was much better after the break than before. Prior to the All-Star break, Curry averaged 24.7 points per game. In 24 games after the break, he averaged 26.6 points, 7.2 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game while shooting 46.6 percent from the field and 41.3 percent from long distance.

Curry wound up averaging 25.3 points per game for the 2016-17 season. The Warriors went 19-5 in his 24 games after the break and went on to win the championship in their first season with Kevin Durant. They lost just one game in the playoffs -- Game 4 of the Finals -- and Curry averaged 28.1 points per game in the playoffs while shooting 48.4 percent from the field and 41.9 percent on 3-pointers.

This past season, Steph had his best All-Star Game before this year's scoring barrage. He scored 28 points and went 8-for-13 on 3-point shots, finishing one off the previous record. Curry already was again taking his game to new heights last season, but was a man on a mission after the break.

In 28 games after the All-Star break, Curry averaged 34.9 points per game, shot 48.7 percent from the field and 43.1 percent on 3-pointers. He also averaged 5.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game. In his first 35 games of the season, he averaged 29.7 points, had a 47.8 field goal percentage and made 41.9 percent of his 3-point attempts.

The Warriors went 18-10 in Curry's final 28 games, he won his second scoring title and finished with a career-high 32.0 points per game. But the Warriors lost both of their play-in games, despite Curry scoring 37 points in a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, and 35 in a loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.

RELATED: Everything to know about Warriors' schedule after the break

Curry obsesses over shooting 40 percent on 3-pointers. He has done so in every complete season he has played in so far. That streak likely will end this season, with him shooting just 37.9 percent on 3-pointers going into the break. His 42.7 field goal percentage is on pace for a career-low as well, and his 25.8 points are his lowest since Durant's first season as a Warrior.

Timing is everything, and Curry letting it fly, quieting the boos and again showing why he's the game's greatest shooter couldn't have come at a better part of the season as the Warriors ramp up for what really matters.

History's on Steph's side, and that usually isn't a good thing for the rest of the league.

Djokovic: 'Players happy to see me back on the Tour which is positive' - MARCA.com

Novak Djokovic insisted he was welcomed back to the men's lockeroom after his return to the ATP Tour at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Djokovic made a triumphant return at the Dubai Tennis Championships in his first match since he was denied entry into the Australian Open due to not being vaccinated against Covid-19.

The world number one, playing competitively for the first time in 2022, beat Italian teenager Lorenzo Musetti 6-3 6-3 at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Entrants to Dubai do not need to be vaccinated, so the 34-year-old was able to return to a tournament he has won five times.

Patafa confident on Hanoi SEAG bid, but Obiena's not on natl pool - businessmirror.com.ph

THE Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (Patafa) will field at least 50 athletes to the Vietnam 31st Southeast Asian Games in May but whether Asian men’s pole vault record holder will be in the association’s lineup or not remains a question mark.

Patafa President Philip Ella Juico told the online Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum on Tuesday that the association is allowed to field as many as 63 athletes to the May 12 to 23 SEA Games in Hanoi but said that they are settling on 50 athletes.

Juico said that they are looking at entries in  38 or 39 of the 44 events in the track and field competitions in Hanoi.

He added that US-based athletes like Kayla Richardson, Kristina Knott, William Morrison, Natalie Uy and Eric Cray are in the thick of training for the SEA Games where they are the reigning champions.

“Most of those who won the gold or silver are still around,” he said. “Most of them are in shape and have continued training.

Juico, a former chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), said the privilege to field more athletes hinged on the Patafa’s 11-8-8 (gold-silver-bronze) haul in the 30th SEA Games the country hosted in 2019.

“We can maintain that [haul]. We can say that this is very ideal,” Juico told the forum presented by San Miguel Corp., Milo, PSC, Philippine Olympic Committee, Amelie Hotel Manila and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.

The Tokyo Olympian Obiena, also the reigning SEA Games gold medalist, is not on Patafa’s national pool, according Juico. The world No. 5 men’s pole vaulter has unresolved issues with the association revolving around liquidation issues.

“EJ Obiena is not on the national training pool list. We have to discuss that among ourselves in the Patafa board but he’s not in the list right now,” Juico said.

“We have to look at his case if he wants to participate [in Hanoi],” Juico added. “He has said he will ask for help from others. Let’s see what works.”

Juico also said that while Filipino athletes faced various difficulties caused by the two-year Covid-19 pandemic, the coaching staff made sure the athletes are in shape heading to the Hanoi Games.

“We make do with what we have wherever we are,” said Juico, who was joined in the forum by Milo Philippines assistant vice president Lester Castillo, Patafa training director Renato Unso and Coach Jeoffrey Chua. “We cannot keep on complaining. We need to adjust. We are not offering excuses for any possible lapses in the competition.” added Juico.

Castillo, meanwhile, reiterated Milo’s support to Patafa, including performance trials scheduled to begin on Thursday in Baguio City then in Imus, Cavite, and at the PhilSports Complex in Pasig City. The National Open is set in April.
