PBA action returns to MOA Arena next year - Manila Bulletin

PBA action returns to MOA Arena next year

PBA action at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City is set to return next year with four matchups prepared on the second week of January.

MOA will finally host PBA games starting Jan. 15, Saturday as the NorthPort Batang Pier face the Blackwater Bossing at 4 p.m. while the Magnolia Hotshots take on the NLEX Road Warriors.

On Jan. 16, Sunday, the TNT Tropang Giga battle the Terrafirma Dyip while the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Gin Kings clash with the San Miguel Beermen in the same respective time slots.

Meanwhile, Jan. 5 marks the first match of 2022 between Magnolia and Blackwater at 3 p.m. while the Alaska Aces confront the Meralco Bolts to cap the first doubleheader at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The PBA, however, has yet to announce if fans will be allowed at the MOA Arena since the venue last hosted games nearly two years ago before the COVID-19 pandemic put a stop at the sporting world.

The PBA already accommodated fans in the Big Dome, with a limited capacity of about 3,000 to 4,000 spectators, as long as they show proof of their full vaccination along with a government ID.

Bucks beat Magic for second straight day behind double-double from Giannis Antetokounmpo - Marca English

Actualizado

The Milwaukee Bucks earned their second win in consecutive days over the Orlando Magic at Amway Arena and fifth straight overall by dominating from start to finish in Thursday night's 136-118 victory.

The return of star Greek power forward Giannis Antetokounmpo after being in the NBA's health and safety protocol related to COVID-19 last Dec. 25 has worked wonders for the defending champs, as he has not looked out of rhythm and they have won all three games he has played.

Five wins in a row for Milwaukee

The "Greek Freak" completed a spectacular double-double in the victory over the Magic by accumulating 33 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, both game highs, in addition to hitting 13 of the 22 shots he attempted and dishing out five assists, generating two steals and blocking two shots.

Other players who contributed in a big way to Milwaukee's victory were the usual players, point guard Jrue Holiday with 25 points and seven assists and small forward Khris Middleton with 22 points and six assists.

There were seven Bucks players who scored in double digits, in addition to the three mentioned above, rounding out this list were DeMarcus Cousins (15 points), Bobby Portis (11 points), Donte DiVincenzo (11 points) and Wesley Matthews (11 points).

Offense spread out for Orlando

For Orlando there were six players who scored in double digits despite the loss, they were Franz Wagner (20 points), Moritz Wagner (19 points), Gary Harris (17 points), R.J. Hampton (15 points), Wendell Carter Jr. (14 points) and Tim Frazier (13 points).

Carter Jr. also recorded a double-double as he grabbed 10 rebounds.

With this result, Milwaukee (24-13) is in third place in the Eastern Conference, while Orlando (7-29) has lost four in a row and is second to last in the same classification.

What's next for the Bucks and Magic?

The Bucks' next game will be the following Saturday when they host the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Magic will return to the court next Sunday when they visit the Boston Celtics.

Juico to contest POC decision - BusinessWorld Online

PHILIPPINE Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) President Philip Ella Juico

BELEAGUERED Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) President Philip Ella Juico isn’t about to throw in the towel just yet when it comes to the issues concerning him and Tokyo Olympian pole-vaulter Ernest John “EJ” Obiena and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).

Mr. Juico stressed that he will contest the decision of the POC executive board which declared him persona non-grata on Tuesday for allegedly harassing Mr. Obiena, whom he had accused of allegedly falsifying liquidations concerning his Ukrainian coach Vitaly Petrov.

“Of course, we will fight it,” Mr. Juico told ANC’s After The Fact host Christian Guevarra on Wednesday night. “This is not within their jurisdiction, this is an intra-NSA (national sports association) issue, and under their own constitution, such are to be resolved first within the NSA.”

Mr. Juico said the PATAFA board came up with a board resolution calling the POC executive board decision invalid.

“We will contest that and we will go all the way wherever we need to go,” said the former Philippine Sports Commission chairman.

Mr. Juico said the POC executive board decision would need to get the nod of the POC general assembly first before it could be rendered final.

Eleven of the 14 POC executive board members made the verdict at a meeting at the East Ocean Palace restaurant in Parañaque upon the recommendation of its executive committee chaired by Patrick Gregorio of rowing.

The POC ethics committee reacted to a complaint filed by Mr. Obiena, who cited harassment as one of his reasons.

But Mr. Juico said they were just forced to act on the matter to protect PATAFA and government interests.

“I will ask — when somebody reports to you an alleged wrongdoing, whether an Olympian or a loser, what are you supposed to do? Am I not supposed to refer it to our people, unless I be accused of covering it up?” said Mr. Juico. “Ano pa ba dapat gawin (What else needs to be done), keep quiet? Is there a different law for Olympians and a different law for non-Olympians? ‘Di ba pantay-pantay ito (Aren’t we supposed to treat people equally)?” — Joey Villar

Russell Westbrook Not Letting Outside Noise Bother Him - NBA Analysis Network

Russell Westbrook, Los Angeles Lakers, NBA Trade Rumors
NBA Analysis Network

Los Angeles Lakers point guard Russell Westbrook has been the center of attention amid the team’s struggles. Things hit a fever pitch following the game on Christmas night, as Westbrook, the former NBA MVP, struggled mightily against the Brooklyn Nets.

Los Angeles mounted a furious comeback, even tying the game with less than a minute remaining in the game after trailing by 23 earlier in the fourth quarter.

The former All-Star made only 4-of-20 from the field, with a missed dunk in which Westbrook was blocked by the rim with 26 seconds remaining effectively ending the comeback attempt.

Westbrook tied his own dubious record in the game, missing 11 shots in the restricted area. In the last 10 seasons that is the most misses at the rim, as he also missed that many on January 22nd, 2020 while playing for the Houston Rockets.

LATEST NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: These 3 Teams Should Keep Tabs On Lakers’ Anthony Davis Trade

It has been a struggle at times, but

Russell Westbrook has reached his breaking point. In a video conference on Monday, he shared his feelings about people trying to get him to change the way that he plays with the Lakers.

“Everybody wants me to do this but then they don’t want me to do this,” Westbrook said. “Honestly, I’m over the whole situation with what everyone else wants me to do and what they think I should be doing.”

While people outside the organization have harped on him changing his approach, his teammates and coaches have been very supportive. LeBron James and David Fizdale both stood up for Westbrook following the poor Christmas performance.

LATEST NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: These 3 Teams Should Keep Tabs On Lakers’ Anthony Davis Trade

They have preached confidence and to allow

Russell Westbrook to play his game. ‘Let Russ be Russ’ is something that has been said a lot and the team is doing that. Westbrook is under immense pressure, but he is doing what he does, it just doesn’t always result in a win or a monster triple-double.

“People are saying ‘let Russ be Russ,’ I think nobody understands what that means,” Westbrook continued. “I think people just say it — ‘let Russ be Russ’ — but nobody actually knows what that means but myself. And I’m gonna lean on that and make sure I do what I’m supposed to do. And let everything else outside the locker room, whatever that may be, take care of itself.”

While the critics have been louder, as they always are when playing for a marquee franchise, Westbrook has had a very productive season. Playing in all 34 games, in a season in which the NBA has already set the record for the number of players to appear in a game in a season, is very impressive.

LATEST NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: These 3 Teams Should Keep Tabs On Lakers’ Anthony Davis Trade

The UCLA product is having one of his more efficient seasons as well, which you wouldn’t know with how he is portrayed. He believes that he has played fine, and he isn’t wrong.

“Honestly, I think I’ve been fine,” Westbrook said. “The conversation has been heavily on how I’m playing and what I’m doing, but I think people are expecting me to have f—ing 25, 15 and 15, which, that is not normal. Everybody has to understand, like, that’s not a normal thing that people do consistently.”

While people want to pick on Russell Westbrook for the

Los Angeles Lakers’ struggles, the finger should not be pointed only at him. Sure, he may not be the best fit alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis, and he has some flaws in his game, but he is far from the sole perpetrator in the team’s struggles.

POC declares Juico persona non grata - pna.gov.ph

PERSONA NON GRATA. The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) Executive Board tackles the rift between athletics chief, Dr. Philip Ella Juico, and Olympic pole vaulter Ernest John “EJ” Obiena during a meeting at the East Ocean Seafood Restaurant in Pasay City on Tuesday (Dec. 28, 2021). MANILA – The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) Executive Board has approved the recommendation of its Ethics Committee that declared athletics chief, Dr. Philip Ella Juico, as persona non grata—an offshoot of Juico’s rift with Olympic pole vaulter Ernest John “EJ” Obiena.

“The POC approved the recommendation of the Ethics Committee declaring Juico as persona non grata,” said Tolentino after the POC Executive Board meeting at the East Ocean Seafood Restaurant in Pasay City on Tuesday. “We do not recognize him anymore as president of PATAFA [Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association] until the new election of its president.”

Tolentino said the PATAFA maintains the POC’s recognition as the national association for the sport despite the sanction on Juico.

He added that all of the association’s officers are also recognized by the POC.

The sanction stemmed from the Ethics Committee’s investigation that concluded that Juico “harassed” Obiena by making “malicious public accusations”.

The committee report said Obiena, a finalist at the Tokyo Olympics and Asian men’s record holder, was accused and maligned publicly by Juico in media in November for allegedly falsifying his liquidation report on his Ukranian coach Vitaly Petrov’s salaries.

The report also said the accusations on Obiena insinuated theft. Rowing association president Patrick Gregorio heads the Ethics Committee.

Eleven of the 15-member POC Executive Board approved the committee recommendation, which will be ratified by the General Assembly in its January meeting.

POC honorary president Ricky Vargas, first vice president Al Panlilio, second vice president Richard Gomez, treasurer Cynthia Carrion-Norton, auditor Joaquin Loyzaga, and board members David Carter, Dr. Jose Raul Canlas, and Pearl Managuelod favored the recommendation, along with Athletes’ Commission head Nikko Huelgas and Secretary General Edwin Gastanes.

Charlie Ho of netball and International Olympic Committee Representative to the Philippines Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski abstained.

Tolentino did not vote as he presided over the meeting in the absence of chairperson Steve Hontiveros.

Juico is the second NSA official to be declared persona non grata after Go Teng Kok, who was also the PATAFA president when then POC chief Jose Cojuangco Jr. slapped the sanction in 2011.

The POC, Tolentino said, assured the 26-year-old Obiena that he will represent the country in various overseas competitions in 2022, including the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi in May and the 19th Asian Games in Huangzhou in September.

“If PATAFA won’t endorse him, which I doubt they would, then we will,” Tolentino said. (PR)

Recap: Ja Morant ascends, Grizzlies outlast Suns 114-113 - Grizzly Bear Blues

If there was any doubt at all left about what Ja Morant has clearly demonstrated himself to be—an all-star, a transcendent talent, and the best player in franchise history—he removed it tonight, making an incredible game-winning floater while triple-teamed in the lane to give the Grizzlies a thrilling 114-113 victory over the Phoenix Suns on the road. Morant had 33 points on 14-25 shooting along with 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

In the first half, the Grizzlies exemplified the excellence that has characterized them on both ends of the court over their last 15 games.

Desmond Bane, who continued his own rise with a career-high 32 points on 12-22 shooting, started off hot with 10 points in the first quarter and only got hotter as he finished with 19 for the half. Steven Adams - who was entirely unstoppable on the glass in the absence of DeAndre Ayton and finished with 13 points, 16 rebounds, and 7 assists - and Ja Morant helped set the tone defensively as they were rock solid in pick-and-roll defense, holding Chris Paul to 0 points at the half. The Suns made several runs, but the Grizzlies were able to build their 25-24 lead at the end of the first quarter to a 60-48 halftime lead.

And that’s when Ja Morant began to take over. He had 15 alone in the third as the Grizz took a 89-75 lead at the end of the third. The Suns did rally with tenacious defense throughout the the 4th quarter, erasing an 18-point deficit to finally take a 1-point lead off of a three by Devin Booker, who finished with 30 points, with 5 seconds remaining. But it wasn’t enough to stop Morant’s heroics to finally win the game.

The Memphis Grizzlies move to 21-14 and will play the Lakers at home on Wednesday night.

"Christian Wood accidentally headshot a fan with an errant pass": The Rockets big man had a Shaqtin' a fool... - The Sportsrush

Houston Rockets big man Christian Wood accidentally throws the ball at the head of a fan walking in the stands of the Hornets arena.

The exit of former MVP James Harden has made the Houston Rockets a lottery team, with many even calling it a G-league team. Currently the last seed in the western conference, the team had pinned its hopes on the second pick in the draft Jalen Green.

However, the 19-year old has been out for over a month with a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, the undrafted Christian Wood has been playing some impressive basketball. The Rockets big man is averaging 17.2 PPG, 10.9 RPG, shooting 46.2% from the field.

Wood played a big hand in the Rockets becoming the first team in North American sports history to win six straight after a fifteen-game losing streak.

The Rockets are at the bottom of the western conference and would hopefully have a top pick in the upcoming draft. Wood recently had a slip-up in the game against the Charlotte Hornets. The Rockers big man accidentally threw a ball at a fan in the stands while trying to make a quick play of the possession.

There have been umpteen cases of players running into fans, especially sitting at the sidelines. These kinds of incidents usually take place during a follow-through of a play. However, Wood’s case was different.

NBA Twitter had some interesting responses for Christian Wood’s Shaqtin’ a fool moment.

The play had Wood trying to make a quick half-court pass with seven seconds remaining to end the second quarter. Wood ended up throwing the ball in the stands, hitting a fan in the head.

Fortunately, the fan seemed alright and would receive an ovation from the crowd and Wood, who immediately regretted his shot.

Christian Wood offers courtside Rockets tickets to fan he accidentally hit in head with pass - Rockets Wire

Monday’s blowout loss in Charlotte wasn’t very memorable for the Houston Rockets, who were down six rotation players due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols and back-to-back maintenance factors.

But for 26-year-old big man Christian Wood, arguably the most accomplished NBA player among Rockets who were able to go, there was a memorable play. Unfortunately, it was not a positive one.

In the final seconds of the first half, Wood sailed an errant outlet pass that inadvertently struck a fan in the head who was walking to her floor seat. Thankfully, the woman was fine, but Wood put his hands on his head and immediately gestured that he was taking responsibility.

In a postgame story on Instagram, Wood laughed at himself over the incident. “Happens to the best of us, Shaqtin,” he said, referring to NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal’s infamous Shaqtin’ a Fool television segment showcasing player miscues. Best of all, Wood ended the message by offering the fan courtside tickets to a Houston game of her choice.

Considering that Monday’s game was in Charlotte, it remains to be seen if she is able to take Wood up on his offer for a later game in Houston. But it would certainly make for quite a story if she does.

Wood finished with 16 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists in 26 minutes on Monday, shooting 5-of-9 (55.6%) overall and 2-of-4 on 3-pointers (50.0%) for a productive individual night. But he also had three turnovers, including one that will now live in Spectrum Center lore.

Lakers vs. Nets Final Score: Stanley Johnson makes case for roster spot in loss - Silver Screen and Roll

The Los Angeles Lakers are officially winless in The Crypt, as the team rung in the newly rechristened building formerly known as Staples Center with a 122-115 Christmas Day loss against the Brooklyn Nets.

The team is now 16-18, and have lost five games in a row while they deal with a long-term absence to Anthony Davis, COVID-19 issues and a roster that — despite a late comeback in the fourth to cut the lead from 23 to tie it up before collapsing in the final few possessions — just does not appear to be all that well constructed at this point. This was also a game that is going to bring the Russell Westbrook detractors out in full force, as his missed layup clinic down the stretch saw him finish with 13 points on 4-20 shooting, ending the night a team-low plus-minus of -23 in a seven-point loss.

But hey, LeBron James passed Kobe Bryant to become the leading scorer in the history of NBA on Christmas Day. So that’s cool.

Sorry, that was unnecessarily snarky. James was stellar once again — finishing with 39 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals while desperately trying to help his team end their current losing skid — but other than his continuing greatness, just about the only good news from this game I’m not going to spend any more time away from my family thinking about was the performance of 10-day contract signing Stanley Johnson.

While Johnson may be a flawed player, it was almost jarring how effective he looked at times simply due to how desperately the Lakers have been missing any wing-sized players whose legs work — other than James — for nearly the entire season.

Johnson’s hellacious effort on defense while trying to deny James Harden the ball was huge in helping the purple and gold make this game closer than it really should have been. Johnson was defending like his NBA life was on the line, and to be honest, it probably was. He legitimately may have won himself a spot for the rest of the year with this performance, and ended the night with 7 points on 2-4 shooting that undersell the impact he made in his first 27 minutes for his hometown team.

His fellow 10-day replacement signing, Darren Collison, also got 12 minutes off the bench during his first day in a Laker uniform, two events that would not seem to bode well for Isaiah Thomas, who got a DNP-CD in his final game before his 10-day contract expires tomorrow.

In the spirit of the season, I’ll be kind, but despite two strong games to start his Lakers tenure, a small, defensively challenged, ball dominant guard just does not appear to be what this team needs right now. Best of luck to Thomas as he tries to find a place to stick in the league, but it just does not seem like that place is Los Angeles given the team’s other needs.

The Lakers will now get Sunday and Monday off before hitting the road to take on the Houston Rockets on Tuesday. Happy holidays, everyone. Sorry the Lakers (mostly) left you a lump of coal.

EJ Obiena says he is open to PSC mediation after POC probe - Sports Interactive Network Philippines

EJ OBIENA said he is still wiling to take part in the mediation process of the Philippine Sports Commission, although not anytime soon.

In a Facebook post on Christmas Eve, Obiena said that, contrary to the claims of Patafa, he is open for mediation that the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) have initiated from the beginning until the federation, he claimed, violated the moratorium imposed by the government sports agency on both camps.

The Filipino pole vaulter also revealed that the Philippine Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee are conducting their own probe on possible harassment against him by Patafa.

Obiena said he remains open to mediation if necessary after the POC and IOC investigation.

“What is there to mediate? Every accusation has been refuted. What is left is a clearing of my good name, my full reinstatement, and necessary changes to the system to avoid this situation to ever happen again and avoid this burden being placed on athletes,” wrote Obiena.

“If after the POC process is final, and my payment records are public, there is still a belief in mediation then at that time I am 100% ready to sit down and do so,” said Obiena.

Coach Vitaly Petrov earlier said he was paid in full by EJ Obiena, never had an issue with the Filipino athlete, and never forwarded a complaint to Patafa with regards to his salary.

Obiena also said he has already laid down all the facts in relation to Patafa’s internal probe of alleged non-payment of salaries by him to his coach Vitaly Petrov in different forums that included a committee hearing in Congress.

In the committee hearing, Deputy Speaker Rufus Rodriguez, who is also the Patafa chairman, slammed Obiena for not taking part in the mediation process of the PSC.

“I have been quiet lately as I have realize I cannot out politics a politician. I just want to be clear that I have no issue with PSC mediation in fact I was the first to agree on it verbally but things change when the other party neglected the moratorium imposed by PSC and continued to insinuate ill behaviors,” said Obiena.

Obiena insisted he has already proven untrue the Patafa’s claims that Petrov was not paid, that he violated the liquidation process, and, most recently, that he didn’t repay his sponsors for their advances.

PBA News: PBA Christmas Day games: Brownlee, Harris see action - Sports Interactive Network Philippines

THE PBA features imports in the Christmas Day games for the first time in 16 years.

The last and only time such happened, according to PBA statistics chief Fidel Mangonon, was in the 2005-2006 Fiesta Conference where Barangay Ginebra, with Chris Porter, winning over Alaska, then coached by Tim Cone and with Odell Bradley as reinforcememt.

The Gin Kings won that contest, 96-89, in the game held at the Cuneta Astrodome with Porter scoring 29 and overcoming Bradley’s 34.

In a match report by the Inquirer, Rodney Santos had 18 points and converted a triple late in the game to save the Gin Kings, the victory of which allowing the team to clinch a semifinal berth.

Mark Caguioa also played in the ballgame and had 25 points, 18 coming in the second half.

Now four imports are set to play in the Christmas Games at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum with NLEX battling Phoenix Super LPG and Barangay Ginebra facing Magnolia.

Two imports who will take part in the doubleheader said it will be a special time to be part of the Christmas Day game in the PBA.

“That’s special,” said Barangay Ginebra import Justin Brownlee. “I know in the States, growing up watching Christmas games in the NBA. It’s always an honor for those guys I’m sure.”

Phoenix Super LPG import Paul Harris said he played a Christmas game once in his career when he was in the G League.

“My whole career, I think I remember playing on Christmas one time in the G League. It will be special,” said Harris. “This will be fun for the fans to come out and support us on Christmas and just everybody at thome that is going to watch. That’s a special day. I can’t wait.”

Justin Brownlee

The Gin Kings eye another Christmas Day win, this time with Justin Brownlee.

But while the locals will have an opportunity to spend Christmas with their respective families prior to the game, the imports won’t. Brownlee though said he is fortunate that he now lives in an era where technology is available.

“I’m definitely going to miss my family, stuff like that, my children. It would be great to see them on Christmas Day. But you know, Facetime, thank God for technology nowadays, you can use Facetime and stuff like that. I’m sure I’ll be calling them, different time zones here and there. But I’m sure I’ll get a phone call or I’ll call them,” said Brownlee.

It’s mixed emotions on the part of Harris, who said he would have brought his family to the Philippines if not for the COVID-19 restrictions.

“It’s really tough. I think my son, he wakes up early on a weekend, he can wake up early (this Christmas). It’s really tough because I always tell eveyody, this is one of my favorite place to play. This is my family [Philippines]. Of all the places that weve travelled, my family loves the Philippines but they want to be here. But it’s hard. They need to quarantine for a week. Its going to be tough,” said Harris.

Brownlee looks forward to playing in front of Barangay Ginebra fans on Christmas for the first time.

“It’s a blessing just to have an opportunity to play on Christmas,” said Brownlee.

Stephen Curry honored in first home game since breaking three-point record - Marca English

Stephen Curry had his first home game since breaking Ray Allen's all-time regular-season NBA three-point shooting mark and received a stirring tribute from the Chase Center crowd in the Golden State Warriors' 113-98 win over the Sacramento Kings on Monday night.

Curry was greeted with a video tribute followed by a standing ovation from all the fans who had to watch on television as he surpassed Allen's 2,973 career three-pointers made during last Tuesday's game at Madison Square Garden in New York.

30 points for Stephen Curry

The "Chef", as usual, was the Warriors' scoring leader, scoring 30 points in the victory and connecting on four of the 12 three-pointers he attempted, in addition to four assists and three rebounds in 36:14 minutes of play.

The game was extra special for Golden State's other franchise icon, Draymond Green, who notched his first triple-double of the season with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

It was the 31st triple-double for Green in his career, which leads this category in Warriors history.

Wiggins and Poole did not play

Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole did not see action for Golden State, for whom the second leading scorer was Damion Lee, who took advantage of the absences to start and score 18 points.

Despite the loss, all five Kings starters scored in double digits, led by Tyrese Haliburton with 24 points and followed by Harrison Barnes (19 points), Buddy Hield (18 points), Chimezie Metu (16 points) and Tristan Thompson (10 points).

With this result, Golden State (25-6) remained in second place in the Western Conference, while Sacramento (13-19) is 11th in the same classification.

Singapore's first badminton world champion hails 'dream come true' - FRANCE 24

Issued on: Modified:

Singapore (AFP) – Loh Kean Yew was celebrating a "dream come true" Monday after becoming the first Singaporean to win a badminton world championship, despite carrying an ankle injury.

The 22nd-ranked Loh stunned India's world number 14 Srikanth Kidambi 21-15, 22-20 in the men's singles final to clinch the BWF World Championship in Huelva on Sunday night.

It capped a stunning run at the tournament in Spain, which saw the 24-year-old Loh beat Olympic champion and world number one Viktor Axelsen of Denmark as well as world number three and fellow Dane Anders Antonsen.

He won despite spraining his right ankle in the quarter-final. He was in such pain after his semi-final match Saturday that he needed to use a wheelchair.

But he told Singapore's Straits Times newspaper that he decided to "push through the pain and go all out in the final, and coped with ice and some treatment, and it paid off".

"This feels like a dream, and now it's a dream come true. I grew up watching Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei playing such big finals and now I'm here as the world champion. It's unbelievable," he said.

Loh, unseeded in the tournament, started off badly in the final, slipping 9-3 down in the first set. But he bounced back strongly, levelling at 12-12 and going on to win.

Kidambi fought back in the second set and notched up an 18-16 lead but Loh hung on, winning on his third match point.

"I still have a long way to go to be where I want to be," said Loh in the Straits Times.

"I will continue to work hard to be even better as I chase my dream of winning an Olympic medal for Singapore."

There was great excitement at Loh's win in tiny Singapore, which has produced only a handful of world-class athletes.

"Well done, Kean Yew!" Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong posted on Facebook.

"You do Singapore proud. Looking forward to your next success!"

Lakers player grades: Austin Reaves gets A+ in win vs. Mavericks - LeBron Wire

The Los Angeles Lakers won in overtime against the Dallas Mavericks thanks to Austin Reaves’ game-winner, 107-104.

Los Angeles jumped out to a 33-23 lead after one quarter. L.A. shot 6-of-9 from deep while Dallas went 0-of-7. LeBron James led the way with 10 points, while Russell Westbrook’s downhill aggression paved the way to 8 points and open looks from the perimeter for players like Austin Reaves.

Then, it all went downhill for L.A. Dallas responded with a 15-0 run right out of the gates in the second and took the lead. Los Angeles’ offense mustered just 14 points in the quarter thanks to a LeBron triple to end the half. The Lakers shot a miserable 5-of-22 from the field, and James (15 points) was the only Laker in double-digits. Anthony Davis, who returned from injury, had more turnovers (five) than points (four).

The Lakers got Davis going with the pick-and-roll game as the big man scored 11 points in the third. However, even though Dallas kept clanking shots off the rim, the game stayed close. It was knotted at 73 going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was a mix of slow offense and rapid shotmaking. It all culminated in a wild sequence that resulted in Wayne Ellington drilling a corner triple to force overtime.

Overtime, of course, was wild. Both teams exchanged tough 3-pointers late in the period, but it was Reaves’ shot in the final seconds that sealed the deal.

Here is how the Lakers graded individually from a rollercoaster win:

Russell Westbrook: A-minus

Russell Westbrook had a strong start to the game with his downhill attacking but decelerated as the game went on. However, he made timely baskets late in the fourth quarter and overtime to round out a solid night. He posted 23 points (8-of-18 FG), 10 rebounds and nine assists, including the kick-out pass to Reaves for the win.

Westbrook had hit a triple from the same spot a few seconds ago, but he passed it up for Reaves to get the look he did. And it worked.

Avery Bradley: B-minus

Avery Bradley got after it on the defensive end all night. He recorded two steals to show for it, but he was one of the better individual defenders against Jalen Brunson and company. However, his minutes in crunch time went elsewhere because he had a cold shooting night (1-of-5 from deep).

Wayne Ellington: A

Wayne Ellington got the start with Talen Horton-Tucker out. Despite a cold start, Ellington made up for it with huge shots and defensive plays down the stretch. His two-man game with LeBron opened up good looks for him, and he hit the shot that forced overtime. He also had tremendous hustle plays on defense that prevented an open layup in transition and also jumped a pass to get the possession back to L.A.

He shot wasn’t perfect (3-of-9 on 3-pointers) but he showed he wanted to win.

LeBron James: A-minus

LeBron had a relatively quiet second half. He led the Lakers in scoring in the first 24 minutes but cooled off as the game progressed. He finished with 24 points, five assists, three rebounds and a steal on 9-of-19 shooting overall and 4-of-9 from deep. He settled for too many jumpers late in the game but got downhill when hunting Brunson on switches.

Still, the Lakers needed James to facilitate to have a chance at winning, and he delivered.

Anthony Davis: B-minus

Davis started to find his rhythm in the second half but still didn’t impose himself. He made key shots down low and passes (like to Westbrook who made a strong weakside cut near the rim for a layup) but could definitely improve on this.

He finished with 20 points (8-of-18 FG, 0-of-3 3P), 12 rebounds and two assists. He’ll need to sharpen his passing when opponents send double-teams because he turned it over six times.

Austin Reaves: A-plus

Austin Reaves had the game of his (young) life. The 23-year-old undrafted rookie posted 15 points (5-of-6 3P), seven rebounds, two assists and a steal in 32 minutes. He was a staple in the closing lineup, which is a testament to how potent he’s been on both ends of the floor.

It culminated in the game-winner, but he likely would’ve gotten an A-plus regardless. He deserves a shoutout for his rotations, individual defense on several possessions and great closeouts.

Carmelo Anthony: C

Carmelo Anthony played 24 minutes but didn’t come in during crunch time. He put up nine points, four rebounds and a block. He shot 3-of-8 overall and 1-of-2 from deep as he tried to get going on the low block on isolation plays.

Kent Bazemore: C-minus

Kent Bazemore entered the rotation and played 15 minutes with Horton-Tucker and Malik Monk out. He missed all three of his shots but had some deflections on defense. He still has a ways to go to find his footing if he wants to be a regular in the lineup again.

PH to host Volleyball Nations League in 2022 - Rappler

Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) President Ramon “Tats” Suzara announced Tuesday, December 11, the country’s hosting of the FIVB Volleyball Nations League in the online Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum.

The Volleyball Nations League will feature 15 of the world’s best squads for two weeks and will be staged in the middle of 2022.

Olympic champions France men’s team and United States women’s squad lead 15 nations vying in the tournament to be held in Pasay City and Quezon City respectively, on two separate dates.

“We would like to bring more world class action in volleyball dito sa Pilipinas next year as part of the four-year partnership with the FIVB, which is the international governing body for volleyball,” said Suzara.

“We will have the top eight teams (men’s side) in the world coming in Manila this June.”

Action in the women’s side kick off the two-week hostilities as USA will be joined by China, Japan, Russia, Belgium, Poland and Thailand in the competition set June 13 to 19 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The following week from June 21 to 26, it’s the turn of the men’s teams to hug the limelight with France facing Tokyo Olympics silver and bronze medalist Russia and Argentina, respectively, Japan, Slovenia, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Initially, only the men’s matches were supposed to be held here, but with Thailand unable to host the women’s event, the FIVB requested the PNVF if it could accommodate both events instead, according to Suzara.

The meet will be the biggest volleyball event to be hosted by the country since the 2005 World Grand Prix.

The men and women’s national teams won’t be left behind though, as exhibition matches are going to be played against some of the visiting countries before they proceed to the next leg.

“The plan now is to have exhibition matches one day after the women’s tournament against Japan and Russia, and sa men’s naman is to have exhibition games against Argentina or Italy and Japan also,” said the PNVF president in the session presented by San Miguel Corporation (SMC), MILO, Amelie Hotel Manila, Braska Restaurant, Daily Tribune, and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).

“This will give our national players a chance to play against these world class teams dito sa Pilipinas as part of the promotion of the FIVB. Part of the timetable din ito because there’s a three-day gap before they go to the next leg so it’s better for them to stay here muna.”

Suzara added the PNVF is also looking to have volleyball fans in the stands during both competitions, hopefully with the health condition a lot better by that time.

“We’re targeting a 50% capacity, depending on the IATF and the conditions by next year,” he said. – Rappler.com

Curry 'on doorstep' of all-time three-point mark as Warriors win - The Manila Times

LOS ANGELES: Two-time league MVP Stephen Curry is just two three-point baskets away from breaking Ray Allen's all-time NBA record after his Golden State Warriors rallied late to edge the Indiana Pacers 102-100 on Monday.

Curry came into the game needing seven three-pointers but could manage only five, leaving him one short of tying Allen's record of 2,973.

"I'm enjoying the moment, knocking on the doorstep. It's pretty surreal," Curry said after scoring 26 points with six rebounds and six assists.

"You just keep playing basketball, taking shots you think you can make and enjoy the experience."

In 35 minutes of playing time, he shot five of 15 from beyond the arc in front of a crowd of 17,018 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse arena in Indianapolis that were eager to see him break the record.

Curry and the Warriors got off to a slow start, trailed for most of the game and were 55-47 behind at the half.

The 33-year-old Curry didn't hit his first three-pointer until the second quarter and committed four of his seven turnovers in the first half as he was smothered by the Pacers' stifling defense.

"I wasn't going to let him do it on our court," said Indiana's Malcolm Brogdon, who had 23 points and eight assists.

Curry made some clutch baskets down the stretch, scoring five of the Warriors' final seven points, including his fifth and final three-pointer -- a 24-foot effort with 84 seconds left on the clock to pull the Warriors to within two points at 100-98.

He then sank two free throws to tie it 100-100 before Kevon Looney got the winning basket with 13 seconds to go.

"It was a grind-it-out kind of win," said Curry, who missed a potential record-tying three-pointer in the final seconds.

- 'A lot of hype' -"We had a competitive spirit down the stretch and we got enough stops."

The three-time NBA champion Curry admitted that the record has become a distraction for the team.

"Let's be honest," Curry said. "There is a lot of hype around this record. Sometimes it gets everybody rushing, playing out of our skin. We had to remind ourselves how we play offense."

Curry doesn't have to wait long to get his next shot at the record, against the New York Knicks on Tuesday.

"It will happen when it happens. I have respect for all great shooters that have come through the league," Curry said.

"I just want to enjoy the moment because it has been a long time coming."

Andrew Wiggins contributed 15 points for the Warriors, while Draymond Green gathered a team-high nine rebounds to go with 15 points.

Domantas Sabonis led all scorers with 30 for the Pacers, who saw a three-game winning streak ended.

The Warriors are now 22-5 on the season and among the favorites, along with the Phoenix Suns and Brooklyn Nets, to win the NBA title.

In Los Angeles, Marcus Morris scored a season-high 24 points as the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Devin Booker-less Phoenix Suns 111-95 in the first game between the rivals since last season's playoffs.

Reggie Jackson added 19 points and Terance Mann had 17 points and nine rebounds for the red-hot Clippers, who have won four straight.

The Suns, who lead the Western Conference this season with a 21-5 record, were missing stars Booker and Deandre Ayton.

The Clippers were also short-handed, playing without all-stars Kawhi Leonard and Paul George.

The Suns beat the Clippers in six games last season in the Western Conference final before losing to the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA finals.

In Boston, Jayson Tatum had 42 points on 16-of-25 shooting as the Celtics beat the Bucks to snap their three-game losing streak.

In Toronto, Scottie Barnes scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half as the Raptors defeated the Sacramento Kings 124-101.

Bittersweet win for Stephen Curry, who fell one triple short of tying Ray Allen - MARCA.com

Stephen Curry fell one three-pointer shy of matching and two shy of surpassing Ray Allen on the NBA's all-time three-point field goal list by making five shoots from long distance in a dramatic 102-100 Golden State Warriors win over the Indiana Pacers on Monday night.

Curry reached 2,972 three-point shots in his already glorious career and had to console himself with waiting until next Tuesday to try to match and then surpass the Hall of Famer who excelled with the Milwaukee Bucks, Seattle SuperSonics (now Oklahoma City Thunder), Boston Celtics and Miami Heat.

With the score tied at 100 points apiece and less than 30 seconds on the clock, Curry attempted a three-pointer to tie the score, but his shot missed the basket, the rebound was grabbed by Kevon Looney who got the game-winning shot that prevented Golden State's first win of the season.

Many mistakes by Curry

The "Chef" was not accurate in the game, because despite his 26 points that made him the scoring leader of his team, he missed 12 of the 20 shots he attempted from the field and 10 of the 15 three-pointers he made, he also had seven turnovers.

The Warriors were down by as many as nine points in the last quarter, but managed to recover to win a vital victory in their aspiration to continue fighting with the Phoenix Suns for the best record in the Western Conference and in the entire NBA.

Other players who stood out in scoring for the Warriors were Andrew Wiggins (15 points), Draymond Green (15 points) and Looney himself (14 points).

Great game by Sabonis

For the losing cause, the great performance of power forward Domantas Sabonis stood out, who accumulated a double-double product of 30 points and 11 rebounds.

Caris LeVert could have tied the game and sent it to overtime, but slipped when he was penetrating to the hoop with less than five seconds to play.

A date with history at Madison Square Garden

The stage was set for Curry to look to break history in the next game for the Warriors (22-5) on Tuesday when they visit the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

For their part, the Pacers (12-17) saw a three-game winning streak come to a halt (all of them at home) and will be looking for a rebound in their next game next Wednesday when they visit the defending champions Milwaukee Bucks.

LeBron James pumps in 30 as Lakers get even with Celtics - Rappler

LeBron James dropped 30 points on 13-of-19 shooting to lead the host Los Angeles Lakers to a 117-102 win over rival Boston Celtics on Tuesday night, December 7 (Wednesday, December 8, Manila time).

Russell Westbrook contributed 24 points and 11 assists, Anthony Davis totaled 17 points and 16 rebounds, and Talen Horton-Tucker added 12 points for the Lakers.

Los Angeles won for the fifth time in eight games, coming off a 119-115 loss to the Clippers in its last game on Friday.

“We had a lot of good moments tonight, and we want to continue to build off of them,” James told the NBA on TNT broadcast. “Tonight was one of the best 48-minute games that we’ve had so far.”

Jayson Tatum scored a game-high 34 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for Boston. Robert Williams III added 13 points and Josh Richardson chipped in 11 off the Celtics’ bench.

Dennis Schroder scored 10 on 1-of-6 shooting in his return to Los Angeles after leaving the Lakers in free agency last offseason.

The Celtics had won three of their last four games but have now dropped four of seven.

The iconic rivals split their two-game season series; the Celtics won 130-108 on November 19 in Boston.

On Tuesday, Los Angeles led 60-55 after a tight first half and took control in the third quarter, outscoring the visitors 31-20.

The Lakers led by as many as 20 early in the fourth quarter before Boston cut within 112-102 on Payton Pritchard’s three-pointer with 1:39 remaining.

Horton-Tucker answered with a driving layup at 1:16. Pritchard missed a long three-pointer, and Malik Monk (10 points) sealed the result with his trey with 45.2 seconds to play.

Boston was without All-Star Jaylen Brown for a third straight game as the team manages his return from a hamstring injury. Jabari Parker (non-COVID illness) and Bruno Fernando (back spasms) also sat out for the Celtics. – Rappler.com
