The Road to March Madness: How to Watch NCAA Basketball Online - Variety

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Variety may receive an affiliate commission.

Selection Sunday, the official kick-off of March Madness, takes place on March 17, which means there’s more than a couple weeks left of conference play before the 68 teams battle it out during the highly anticipated NCAA tournament.

College basketball broadcasts are spread out across many channels including ESPN, CBS Sports, TNT and FOX Sports. However, the best way for cable-cutters to catch the rest of the college basketball season is through a variety of live TV streaming services such as Sling TV, which is currently offering a limited-time deal for its first month.

Sling’s Orange + Blue package carries ESPN, TNT and FOX Sports so you’re able to catch nearly every game live online. Best of all, this Orange + Blue package starts at just $60 a month, but Sling is running a deal right now that slashes your first bill in half, bringing it down to only $30/month. You can also get certain conference channels with the Sling Sports Extra add-on ($11 a month).

While the UConn Huskies and the Purdue Boilermakers have both been vying for a No. 1 spot, the Houston Cougars have crept their way to the top of the leaderboard for an exciting three-way battle as we inch closer to the single-elimination tournament.

While UConn was considered invincible at the start, they’re now a bit more vulnerable after a 19-point loss at Creighton last week. Houston, on the other hand, is considered the team of the week after beating out two top-15 teams: they beat the Iowa State Cyclones 73-65 and then pulled out an 82-76 win against the Baylor Bears.

Eyes are also on the Arkansas Razorbacks’ Khalif Battle, who scored 42 points on just 15 shots for a win against the Missouri Tigers; the Marquette Golden Eagles’ Kam Jones who scored 34 points in back-to-back wins; and the Kentucky Wildcats’ Justin Edwards whose 28 points on 10-for-10 shooting helped beat out the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Boxing defines its Olympic qualifiers - infobae

The one of Busto Arsizio is the first pre-Olympic tournament in the world, although places have already been distributed in continental instances.
The one of Busto Arsizio is the first pre-Olympic tournament in the world, although places have already been distributed in continental instances.

After a few months of a lot of noise for Olympic boxing, starting this Sunday the focus will be on the dream of 670 athletes who will participate in the first Olympic qualifier in the Italian city of Busto Arsizio. A total of 49 places will be at stake for Paris 2024, divided into 28 for men and 21 for women, with the majority being defined on March 10 and 11.

Although this is the first World Pre-Olympic Tournament (the second will be in Thailand from May 26 to June 2), it will not be the first opportunity for boxers to secure a place in the Games, since the first Olympic tickets were defined in continental instances such as the 2023 European Games and 2023 Pan American Games. For this reason, many world-class boxers have already won their place, including the double Olympic champions of Cuba Julio César La Cruz and Arlen López, the Irish gold medalist of Tokyo 2020, Kellie Harrington, and the French Olympic champion of Rio 2016, Estelle Mossely.

An important point regarding the limitations of each country to obtain places is that they can only present competitors in the weights in which athletes have not yet qualified.

The 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago distributed the first places for the American continent.
The 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago distributed the first places for the American continent.

While many boxers will aim for their first Olympic Games, they will be joined by numerous Olympic athletes and medalists from previous Games. Among them, Carlo Paalam and Nesthy Petecio from the Philippines, silver medalists at Tokyo 2020. Petecio made history in Japan by becoming the first woman in her nation to win an Olympic medal in boxing.

Another medalist who will box in Italy is Aidan Walsh, from Ireland, who won bronze in the men’s 57kg in Tokyo 2020. If he gets a quota, he will join his sister Michaela Walsh in Paris 2024, after she secured a place at last year’s European Games.

One of those pursuing his first appearance at the Games is the American Roscoe Hill (51 kg men), who grew up training in George Foreman’s gym and was even baptized by the former Olympic and world heavyweight champion.

The IBA is being watched by the International Olympic Committee for administrative and arbitration irregularities.
The IBA is being watched by the International Olympic Committee for administrative and arbitration irregularities.

The U.S. team also includes Tokyo 2020 Olympic and 2019 Pan American Games champion Naomi Graham, whose story of resilience has inspired a generation of amateur boxers both at home and abroad.

Cuba has a long and rich history in Olympic boxing that includes 41 gold medals, however, this will be the first time that Cuban boxers will have the opportunity to compete in the Games. Legnis Calá (57 kg women) and Yakelín Estornell (66 kg women) will aim to make history for women’s sports in Italy by obtaining a quota for Paris 2024.

Great Britain nominated a 10-member team in the hope of joining the already qualified Charley Davison (54 kg women), Rosie Eccles (66 kg women) and Delicious Orie (92 kg men). The team includes Savannah Stubley (50kg women), Kiaran MacDonald (51kg men) and Owain Harris-Allan (57kg men) who won bantamweight bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The boxing finals in Paris 2024 will be held at Roland Garros.
The boxing finals in Paris 2024 will be held at Roland Garros.

The boxing tournament of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will distribute its program between the Villepinte exhibition center and the emblematic Roland Garros venue. Hall eight of the first of these venues will host the competition from July 27 to August 4, reaching the semifinals in some categories. Two dates later, the actions will move to Philippe Chatrier’s center court, where the finalists will be completed and the medals will be contested until August 10.

Max Strus sinks 59-footer at the final horn, sending Cavaliers to 121-119 win over Mavericks - USA TODAY

CLEVELAND (AP) — Max Strus caught the pass, and with barely any time to think never mind shoot, one thing crossed his mind.

“Get it up,” he said.

Down it went.

Strus drilled a 59-footer as time expired, his fifth 3-pointer in the final four minutes, to give the Cleveland Cavaliers a wild 121-119 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night.

After the Mavericks took the lead on P.J. Washington's dunk with 2.9 seconds left, the Cavs, out of timeouts, inbounded the ball to Evan Mobley, who passed it back to Strus — whose barrage of four 3s in a span of 67 seconds down the stretch brought Cleveland back from a 10-point deficit.

Strus then took a dribble before launching his shot from well beyond mid-court. As it swished through the net, Strus was tackled to the floor by his celebrating teammates as the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse crowd erupted.

Strus said he knew it was good from the moment it left his hand.

“The last five felt pretty good,” he said. “I felt a rhythm and it’s fun when you do that. Every time I shot it, I felt like it was going in, and it was. Same with the last one.”

Donovan Mitchell scored 31 points, Strus added 21 and Jarrett Allen 19 for the Cavs, who improved to 12-3 since Jan 26 following a win many of them will long remember.

“Man, just to see it go through, especially what he did for us in the fourth, it had to be him, too,” Mitchell said. “You dream of a shot like that. So for him to get that after what he did for us, the whole fourth quarter, man."

Strus said the play wasn't designed but just unfolded.

“Don (Mitchell) wasn’t in the game so somebody else had to do it,” he joked.

Strus wasn't all that impressed by his heave. He made an even longer game-winning shot in college.

"Yeah, at my Division II school I made a three-quarter court shot to win the game,” he said.

Luka Doncic had 45 points and 14 assists a day before turning 25 for the Mavericks. Kyrie Irving added 30 for Dallas, which lost for just the second time in 10 games.

“Incredible shot. That was just an incredible shot,” Doncic said. "It was my fault, I should have pressed forward (on Strus). I thought we played a good game, but that was rough, obviously.”

Doncic added nine rebounds, finishing one shy of his 11th triple-double.

With Doncic making a 3-pointer, Dallas reeled off 10 straight points to take a 108-98 lead with 4:38 left.

The Mavericks were still up by double digits when Strus got hot, making four 3-pointers in just over a minute to pull the Cavs within 113-112.

“That two-minute span was intense for us," Irving said. "This is the first time I’ve lost on a half-court shot. You don’t flush it out of your system, you feel it. This one has got to sting a little bit.”

The Cavs have been thrilled with what they've gotten from Strus, who signed with them in the offseason after a nice run with Miami. He gives Cleveland toughness, outside shooting and another leader — on and off the court.

“What he did tonight was absolutely ridiculous to come back in that fourth quarter for us to be down the way we were,” coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. "But that’s who Max is. And it’s as simple sometimes as chasing down a loose ball or making an extra rotation. Max never quits and we were down and he had the same mentality.

“He wasn’t going to quit and he just kept making play after play after play on both ends.”

Doncic's appearance in Cleveland always brings out dozens of fans from the the city's Slovenian community. Following his early pregame warmup, Doncic went into the stands to sign autographs and pose for photos.

After a sluggish start offensively, the Cavaliers made 7 of 9 3-pointers to begin the second quarter while opening a 56-41 lead.

But following a Dallas timeout, Doncic took over. The All-Star made three 3s in a span of 1:26, dropped two free throws and then hit another step-back 3 to score 14 points in the final 2:57 to pull the Mavs within 60-56 at halftime.

This was Irving's first visit since being traded to Dallas from Brooklyn, and he got a warm ovation in player introductions and again when the Cavs played a video tribute for him during a first-quarter timeout.

Irving waved to the crowd and formed the shape of heart with his hands to show thanks.

The mercurial guard has a complicated relationship with Cleveland fans. Some remain faithful and will never forget his contributions to the Cavs' title run in 2016 while others feel bitterness toward Irving after he demanded to be traded.

He's been with Dallas nearly a year, and Mavericks coach Jason Kidd raved about how Irving has blended in after a bumpy exit from the Nets.

“He’s at peace,” Kidd said. “He’s enjoying Dallas, the city. He’s enjoying his teammates and he’s playing at a high level."

NBA-leading Celtics cruise to 8th straight win with 116-102 victory over Knicks - CBS Boston

NEW YORK - Jaylen Brown scored 30 points, Kristaps Porzingis had 22 and the NBA-leading Boston Celtics easily handled the New York Knicks 116-102 on Saturday night for their eighth consecutive victory.

Jayson Tatum had 19 points and Derrick White added 13 for the Celtics, who have won 10 of their last 11.

Jalen Brunson had 34 points on 12-for-25 shooting from the field and 4-for-9 from 3-point range and Josh Hart had 16 for the Knicks, who were swept by Boston in their four-game season series.

Boston opened the second half with a 4-point lead before the All-Star tandem of Brown and Tatum along with Porzingis, a 2015 first-round draft pick of the Knicks, sparked a 30-11 spurt to put the game out of reach.

After Isaiah Hartenstein hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit for New York to 67-61, Porzingis and Tatum hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 73-66. That forced the Knicks to call timeout with 8:21 in the third quarter.

New York then turned the ball over on the following possession and Brown answered with a 3 before Brunson was fouled on a 3-point attempt and hit all three free throws that made it 76-69.

The Knicks and Celtics traded baskets before Porzingis started a 10-0 run with a 3 from the top of the key and Brown closed it with a layup to extend the lead 88-71 with 3:53 remaining in the quarter.

Hart and Brunson followed with consecutive baskets, but Boston responded with a 9-0 run capped by Tatum's 3 that made it 97-77 with 1:30 left in the quarter and drew loud "Let's Go Celtics!" chants from the visiting fans.

The Knicks charged back with a 13-2 run bridging the end of the third quarter and the start of fourth quarter, cutting the deficit 99-90 on Bojan Bogdanovic's jumper with 9:17 to play in the period.

But the Celtics took advantage of three Knicks turnovers and six missed shots to go on a 10-0 run to extend the lead 109-90 with 4:43 left in regulation.

Brown had 10 points in the first quarter to help the Celtics to a 30-36 lead at the end of the opening period. He added 10 more in the second period to pace Boston to a 62-58 advantage at halftime. The Celtics shot 66.7% from the field and 42.9 percent beyond the 3-point line in the first half.

Sultan suffers devastating 1st round knockout against Japanese foe

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Former world title contender Jonas “Zorro” Sultan suffered a devastating first-round knockout against Japanese prospect Riku Masuda in their undercard bout of the Jerwin Ancajas-Takuma Inoue world title bout in Tokyo, Japan, on Saturday, February 24.

A stinging left straight to the body sent Sultan, who is known as a ring toughie, grimacing in pain to the canvas.

Masuda only needed two minutes and 21 seconds in the opening round to log his impressive victory against the heavily favored and more experienced Sultan.

The 26-year-old Japanese up-and-comer improved his record to four wins with four knockouts and one defeat. His knockout victory was a fitting comeback for Masuda, who lost to countryman Seiya Tsutsumi for the Japan Boxing Commission (JBC) bantamweight title last August in Tokyo.

It was also a statement win for him that he could take on experienced and top-caliber opponents such as Sultan, who he easily beat via his first-round knockout victory.

Meanwhile, Sultan, one of MP Promotions’ top pugs, suffered his seventh loss in 26 fights.

Sultan’s boxing career has been on a roller coaster ride since his world title clash with Ancajas in 2018 in Fresno, United States. He won five of his nine bouts from 2018 to 2024.

His last win was against American Frank Gonzales via unanimous decision last September in Plant City, United States. It was his comeback fight following his loss to British Paul Butler for the WBO Interim World Bantamweight title in 2022.

1. LUKA’S 41 POWERS MAVS TO 7TH STRAIGHT WIN

Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving step up and Dallas withstands 35 from Devin Booker to earn its longest win streak of the season.

The All-Star break did nothing to slow down the Mavericks, who opened the stretch run with a 123-113 win over the Suns behind a combined 70 points from Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

The win pulled the Mavs even with the Suns at 33-23 and clinched the season series and head-to-head tiebreaker should it be needed in the crowded West. Recap

  • Luka for 40: Doncic (41 pts, 11 ast, 9 reb) posted his NBA-leading 11th game this season with 40+ points as he finished one board shy of a triple-double. The Mavs improved to 10-1 when Doncic drops 40+ this season
  • Healthy Kyrie: The Mavs began this win streak when Irving returned from a sprained thumb on Feb. 5. On Thursday, he added 29 points, five boards, three assists and this ridiculous finish
  • Book’s 35 not enough: Devin Booker led the Suns with 35 points, while Kevin Durant added 23. In three games against the Mavs, Dallas has held KD to 36.4% (Dec. 25), 40% (Jan. 24) and 40.9% (Thursday) – marking three of his eight lowest FG% games this season

Celtics win 7th straight: Jayson Tatum scored 15 of his 25 points in the third quarter as Boston won the period 37-21 and finished off the Bulls 129-112 to post their longest win streak of the season – and tied for the longest active streak in the league – at seven in a row. Boston made 23 3-pointers – including five apiece from Tatum and Derrick White (who added three first-quarter blocks). Recap

2. THUNDER WIN WEST SHOWDOWN WITH CLIPPERS

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (31 pts, 8 ast, 4 reb, 2 blk) posted his league-leading 40th game with 30+ points to lead the Thunder to a pivotal 129-107 win over the Clippers as the teams vie for playoff position near the top of the West standings. Recap

  • Thunder win Season Series: The win clinches the season series 2-1 for OKC and gives the Thunder the head-to-head tiebreaker over LA should it be needed
  • Group effort: While SGA led the way, the Thunder got key games from Lu Dort (19 pts), Jalen Williams (18 pts, 6 ast) and Chet Holmgren (17 pts, 10 reb, 3 blk)
  • Welcome and welcome back: Gordon Hayward was held scoreless with four rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench in his OKC debut. Meanwhile, James Harden (17 pts, 6 reb), Russell Westbrook (2 pts, 5 ast) and Paul George (14 pts, 6 ast) were back in familiar territory

Curry leads Warriors past LeBron-less Lakers: A little further down the West standings, the Warriors got an important 128-110 win over the Lakers on Thursday to even the season series at 1-1 (with two games to play). They pull within a half game as the two sit in the nine and 10 spots, respectively, in the Play-In field. Recap

  • Curry drops 32: Fresh off a win in the Stephen vs. Sabrina 3-Point Challenge, Steph splashed six 3s on Thursday on his way to 32 points and eight assists (including this no-look behind-the-back dime to Andrew Wiggins)
  • Warriors trending up: Golden State improved to 9-2 in their last 11 games dating back to Jan. 30, while they also snapped a three-game win streak for the Lakers
  • Davis & D-Lo lead Lakers: Anthony Davis (27 pts, 15 reb) and D’Angelo Russell (18 pts, 9 ast) were not enough to get the Lakers past Steph and Warriors
  • Buzzer-beaters: What’s better than one buzzer-beater? How about two in back-to-back quarters. Andrew Wiggins ended the first half with a buzzer-beating tip-in. Then Jonathan Kuminga ended the third quarter with a turnaround baseline jumper

3. ROUNDUP: HISTORIC NIGHT FOR JOKIC

Nikola Jokic becomes just the 3rd player in history to record a triple-double against every opposing team, joining Russell Westbrook and LeBron James.

Nikola Jokic entered Thursday with 120 career triple-doubles – fourth all-time behind Russell Westbrook, Oscar Robertson and Magic Johnson.

He increased that number to 121 with a one-of-a-kind statline in NBA history – 21 points, 19 rebounds, 15 assists, 10-10 FG – to lead the Nuggets 130-110 past the Wizards. Recap

Jokic joined Westbrook and LeBron as the only players to record a triple-double against every team opponent they have faced in their career.

Late surge saves Kings: After San Antonio went up by four with 2:12 to play, the Kings closed the game on an 11-2 run to secure the 127-122 win. De’Aaron Fox scored 11 of his team-high 28 in the fourth, while Domantas Sabonis (22 pts, 11 reb, 11 ast, 1 euro vs. Wemby) added to his league-leading 19 triple-doubles. Recap

  • Devin Vassell led the Spurs with 32 points, while Victor Wembanyama (19 pts, 13 reb, 5 stl, 5 blk, 4 ast) finished one assist shy of a rare 5×5 game (only 21 recorded since blocks and steals became official stats in 1973-74)
  • Wemby became the third-fastest player to reach 1K+ points, 500+ rebounds and 150+ blocks. Only Shaq (43 games) and David Robinson (47) did it faster than Wemby (50)

Pelicans win 4th straight: CJ McCollum (28), Zion Williamson (27, 1 emphatic block) and Jonas Valanciunas (20 pts) combined for 75 points as the Pelicans defeated the Rockets 127-105. Herb Jones (17 pts, 5 reb, 4 ast, career-high 7 stl) stuffed the stat sheet, and was part of a three dunks in three possessions run as NOLA built a double-digit lead.  Recap

Hornets’ big 4th Quarter leads to 4th straight win: Charlotte outscored Utah 30-17 in the fourth quarter to secure a 115-107 win and improve to 4-0 with trade-deadline acquisitions Grant Williams, Tre Mann and Seth Curry in the lineup. Miles Bridges (26 pts, 14 reb) and Williams (24 pts) combined for 50 points in the win. Recap

Knicks snap 4-game skid: In his third game as a Knick, Bojan Bogdanovic made all six of his 3s and finished with a team-high 22 points to lead the Knicks past the Sixers, 110-96. NY also got double-doubles from Jalen Brunson (21 pts, 12 ast) and Josh Hart (18 pts, 12 reb), while Tyrese Maxey led all scorers with 35 for the Sixers. Recap

  • Philly native Kyle Lowry had 11 points, five assists and six stitches (to suture a facial laceration suffered in the first half before returning to the game) in his Sixers debut

Raptors snap 3-game skid: Toronto earned its first win since Feb. 9 behind a combined 49 points from Gary Trent Jr. (25 pts, 5-7 3p) and Immanuel Quickley (24 pts, 6 reb) to spoil Kevin Ollie’s debut as Nets interim head coach. Recap

Wagner Bros., bench get Magic past Cavs: Moritz (22) and Franz (14) Wagner combined for 36 points, while the Orlando bench outscored the Cleveland bench 63-24 to help the Magic hand the Cavs just their third loss in their last 21 games. The Cavs were without All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell (illness). Recap

Indiana gets a post-All-Star win: The Pacers got their home court back after lending Gainbridge Fieldhouse for last weekend’s All-Star Game, and defeated the Pistons 129-115. Who had the most dominant performance in this game? Tyrese Haliburton (25 pts, 13 ast), Cade Cunningham (30 pts, 8 ast) or this Pacers fan during the shrimp eating challenge? Recap

4. WOLVES TRY TO STAY COURSE, WHILE BUCKS TRY TO RIGHT SHIP

The Wolves and Bucks meet tonight in Minnesota (10 ET, ESPN) to begin the stretch run toward the postseason, with both teams looking to show themselves as championship contenders.

  • Minnesota: Leading the West coming out of All-Star for the first time in team history, the Wolves’ have led the pack since early this year. But with 3 teams within 2.5 games of first, can the Wolves keep the pace and make their first run to the second redound in two decades?
  • Milwaukee: Less than three years removed from winning the NBA title, the Bucks sit third in the East, but lost seven of their last 10 games entering the All-Star break. Already incorporating a new point guard (Dame Lillard) this season, the Bucks are also adjusting to their second coach in five months (Doc Rivers)

Both teams sent a pair of All-Stars to Indy last weekend and the play of those star duos will be key to watch in this matchup and throughout the stretch run.

  • Giannis Antetokounmpo & Lillard are the second-highest scoring duo in the league (54.4 combined ppg, among qualified players only) in their first season as teammates. The Bucks are 25-6 (.806) when they combine for 50+ points, 16-3 (.842) when they combine for 60+ points and 6-1 (.857) when they both score 30+ in the same game
  • Anthony Edwards & Karl-Anthony Towns are averaging their highest combined average (48.8 ppg) in their fourth season as teammates. Towns led the Wolves in scoring in Ant’s first two seasons, but beginning last season, Edwards has been the team’s primary scorer, and the Wolves are currently seeing the best results in both stats and wins

Parallels, 20 Years Later: The last time the Wolves had two All-Stars and a coach leading the Western Conference All-Star team? 2004, when coach Flip Saunders and stars Kevin Garnett and Sam Cassell repped for the Wolves.

Now in the franchise’s 35th season, that 2003-04 campaign is the most successful in team history.

  • Best record in franchise history at 58-24 (.707)
  • Only time they’ve finished the regular season atop the West
  • Only league MVP (Garnett) in franchise history
  • Only time they’ve advanced to the West Finals

But will it stay that way? The 2023-24 Wolves (39-16, .709) are on pace to match the 2003-04 team in wins. The Wolves can take the first step tonight.
