Minnesota Timberwolves Injury Report (Dec. 30): Latest update on Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns' availability - Sportskeeda

Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns are the formidable frontcourt tandem of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and their chemistry is a huge component of the team's success. This team is set to host the Los Angeles Lakers this coming Saturday, December 30, at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, starting at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

PUBLISH FOR 6:30 PM IST

For those who want to catch the action, Bally Sports North and Spectrum Sportsnet are the best places to watch the game on television. NBA League Pass has both feeds as an option for their online live-stream subscribers.

According to the Timberwolves' recent injury report, Karl-Anthony Towns is marked as 'questionable' to play while Jaylen Clark will be returning to the team's roster by mid-February.

That means Rudy Gobert and the rest of the team are available to play against the Lakers.

What happened to Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns?

Rudy Gobert was bugged by a back injury back in April, which derailed his performance last season. So far, he has not missed any game for the Timberwolves in the 2023-24 season, but monitoring the back injury will become a habit.

A knee injury made Karl-Anthony Towns miss the team's game against Sacramento on December 23, and he has been carefully monitoring it since then. He has played two straight games since, but his lackluster performance proved that he is still not 100%.

Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns' stats vs Lakers

This is the second time that the Minnesota Timberwolves and Los Angeles Lakers have met this season. The final score settles at 118-111 with the T-wolves earning the victory on their home court.

Rudy Gobert was able to control the game from the paint having a double-double of 15 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks. The French center was also shooting well from the field, going 6-of-11.

Meanwhile, Karl-Anthony Towns was able to log in 33 minutes, which is enough for him to give the Timberwolves 21 points, six rebounds, four assists, and one steal. He also shot 2-of-6 from the three-point line and 7-of-17 from the field.

Leading the team was Anthony Edwards, who ended the game with 27 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and one block. Mike Conley was also a factor for the team back then, contributing 16 points and eight assists, while Jaden McDaniels rounded up the double-digit scorers for the team with 14 points.

Naoya Inoue next fight: Who will Naoya Inoue fight next? 'The Monster' reveals plans for fast return - Sportskeeda

Naoya Inoue's next fight will likely take place in March against Luis Nery.

'The Monster' returned to the ring earlier this week in Japan opposite Marlon Tapales. The bout took place just a few months after Inoue moved up to super bantamweight and took two titles from Stephen Fulton by knockout.

Facing 'Nightmare', the Japanese boxer again made history. While Tapales landed more shots than most, he was still put down in round 10. With the knockout victory, Inoue became a two-division undisputed champion. In the process, he joined Terence Crawford, the only other man to do so.

Now, just days removed from Naoya Inoue vs. Marlon Tapales, fans know more about the Japanese boxer's future. While some pitched a potential catchweight bout with Gervonta Davis, that appears to be off the table. Instead, he will likely face WBC mandatory challenger Luis Nery.

The news was announced by Michael Benson of TalkSport. On X, the journalist reported that Inoue revealed plans for a May return, likely against Nery. A former champion in his own right, 'Pantera' will look to upset the undisputed super bantamweight champion in 2024.

It's worth noting that a deal between the two is likely far apart as of now. However, that's what the champion appears to want. For his part, Nery is expected to enter the fight riding a four-fight winning streak, last defeating Froilan Saludar in July.

Gervonta Davis publically rejects calls to be Naoya Inoue's next fight

Gervonta Davis seemingly has no interest in facing Naoya Inoue anytime soon.

Discussions of a potential bout between 'Tank' and 'The Monster' have been going on for a while. While the two aren't in the same weight class, a fight between them would be electric. I mean, it's two champions at the height of their careers who pack insane power for their size.

Still, with the emergence of reports about Inoue facing Nery, many fans are likely disappointed. While the bout with 'Tank' was never exactly likely, it absolutely won't be happening next. According to Davis, it might never happen at all.

On social media, Gervonta Davis reacted to a fan-made poster for the potential bout between himself and Naoya Inoue. Writing in the Instagram comment section of the post, 'Tank' stated:

“I’m not fighting him. He’s NO WHERE near my weight. [I don’t know] why this page keep posting s*** like this.”

Bettors capitalize on Nets' approach to Mikal Bridges resting - ESPN

The Nets' approach to resting Mikal Bridges while keeping alive his consecutive games streak turned into an edge for savvy bettors Wednesday and caused sportsbooks to abruptly halt betting on the Brooklyn star.

Sportsbooks took down the betting options on Bridges' statistics, including points, rebounds and assists, within approximately 90 minutes after the Nets announced that three starters would be rested Wednesday against the Bucks.

Bridges, who owns the NBA's longest consecutive games streak, and Cam Thomas were the only regular starters not listed on the injury report released at 1:30 p.m. ET.

The over/under on Bridges' points (21.5), rebounds (4.5) and assists (3.5) were in line with expectations that he'd play a full game. Bettors, however, recalled a similar scenario in a Bucks-Nets game last March in which Brooklyn rested multiple starters and played Bridges only the first quarter, at least in part to keep his streak intact.

Bettors believed Bridges would be similarly limited against the Bucks on Wednesday and rushed to sportsbooks to bet the under on his statistics -- and they were right: Bridges played only the first quarter, finishing with six points, three points and one assist.

"I saw that the Nets were resting everyone, and I knew that Bridges had the iron man streak of consecutive starts going, and we had seen this in the past with the Nets," Danny Komendera, a 29-year-old bettor and content producer from Illinois, told ESPN. "I just thought it was an opportunity. I decided to tweet it out, because I think this is an edge, but obviously didn't realize at the time how significant it could've been."

Noah Zwit, a 24-year-old avid sports bettor from Illinois, said he learned of the potential edge around 2:15 p.m. ET and had enough time to place multiple same-game parlays featuring the unders on Bridges points, assists, 3-pointers and rebounds with ESPN BET. He shared a screenshot of a $1,000 parlay that would've paid nearly $61,000 but lost by one Bridges rebound.

Zwit said he won $22,000 on his other parlay involving Bridges.

"He was the only starter listed as active," Zwit told ESPN. "We were hoping he was only going to play a minute or two. [I] got unlucky with that rebound."

A spokesman for PointsBet (Fanatics) said Bridges' odds were up only briefly and that the book took minimal action on them. At Draftkings, however, the odds were up long enough to make Bridges' the second-most heavily bet player on Wednesday's six-game NBA slate, behind only Philadelphia 76ers forward Tobias Harris.

The over/under on Bridges' points at BetMGM opened at 21.5 and attracted lopsided action on the under. A spokesperson for BetMGM told ESPN that 83% of the bets on Bridges' points were on the under. FanDuel also reported the majority of the action on Bridges' points was on the under. At DraftKings, 91% of the money bet on Bridges' rebounds was on the under.

Nets coach Jacque Vaughn cited his team's recent schedule when explaining the decision to rest players and also mentioned Bridges' consecutive-games streak, which extended to 423 straight games.

"Let's be upfront and honest; he has a streak going on that he doesn't want to end," Vaughn said. "So that's understandable, but at the same time I treat each guy on an individual basis."

When informed of Vaughn's postgame comments about his streak, Bridges told the New York Post: "I guess for their purposes is why. But I'm healthy, so I [don't] see why I wouldn't play."

"The streak is, I guess, for everyone else to talk about," Bridges told the Post. "But I don't just get in there for the streak. I get in there to play the game and because I want to go out there and win. I don't go in there to just sub in, get the streak and whatever. I just want to play."

Tapales ready to conquer Tokyo, faces unbeaten Inoue - Manila Bulletin

Marlon Tapales hopes to become the monster's biggest nightmare when he takes on the daunting task of putting his name to history books against Japanese superstar Naoya Inoue in their super bantamweight unification bout at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan on Tuesday, Dec. 26.

_IB_0741.jpg
Marlon Tapales (right) and Japanese opponent Naoya Inoue make weight for their super-bantamweight unification bout on Tuesday, Dec. 26. (Wendell Alinea/MP Promotions)

Both fighters easily made the 122-pound limit with Inoue first to tip the scales at 121 and ¾ lbs while Tapales weighed in at 121 ¼ lbs on Monday, Dec. 25, to formally set the stage for the clash between the two premiere power punchers.

But Tapales is in no way bothered, rather even more determined to prove that he’s not only there to survive the 12-round fight but to actually win it all and become the first Filipino unified champion.

Boasting a 37-3 record with 19 knockouts, Tapales, who holds the World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation belts, vowed not back down against Inoue, who, on the other hand, sports a neat 25-0 record, 22 KOs, and the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization crowns.

“Tulad ng sinabi ko, gusto kong manalo, 'di po ako mananalo kung lagi lang po akong dedepensa. Tama 'yung training ko, alam ko kung ano 'yung dinala ko rito so talagang lalaban ako,” said the Filipino southpaw during the final press conference of the mega bout.

Much of the spotlight, of course, is on Inoue who is pegged as the heavy favorite as he hopes to continue his meteoric rise and become the only second boxer – behind Terrence Crawford – to unify the four world championship belts in two weight classes.

Inoue was coming off a dominant eighth round stoppage against Stephen Fulton where he displayed the familiar blazing speed and signature crushing firepower to win the belts he is staking against Tapales.

Inoue sees no problems in facing up against a southpaw like Tapales and his camp is so confident of a big win – a knockout, in fact – that it believes there’s no need for a rematch clause.

The camp of hard-punching Filipino, who is looking to pull off another shocking upset following his split decision win over Murodjon Akhmadaliev, thinks otherwise, saying that it will be glad to go back to Japan for a possible rematch.

Knicks' Brunson has 38 in 'special' win over Bucks - ESPN

NEW YORK -- The New York Knicks lost their first three games against the Milwaukee Bucks this season, but on Christmas Day, Jalen Brunson played like a man determined to prevent that streak from extending to four.

Brunson finished with 38 points, the most by a Knicks player on Christmas Day since Bernard King's record 60-point performance in 1984, to lead New York to a 129-122 victory over Milwaukee. The Knicks' victory snapped the Bucks' seven-game winning streak.

"We've struggled against this team throughout this year and the fact that we came out with a win today, it's special," Brunson said after the game. "I like the way we had a lead no matter how much they cut the lead down. We stayed poised and figured out a way to keep it and win."

After losing to the Bucks on Saturday afternoon, the Knicks came out aggressively in the first quarter Monday. They scored 36 points in the period, their highest first-quarter total of the season, and never trailed after that.

Four Knicks -- Brunson, Julius Randle (24), RJ Barrett (21) and Immanuel Quickley (20) -- scored at least 20 points, becoming the second team in the past 50 years to do so on Christmas Day, joining the 2012 Rockets, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

"We had a lot of guys in double figures and a lot of assists," Quickley said. "It was fun to play like that when everybody is moving and touching [the ball]. I think our defense really bled into our offense, so that has got to be the way every night."

New York picked up a victory despite Milwaukee getting a combined 88 points from its Big 3 of Giannis Antetokounmpo (32), Damian Lillard (32) and Khris Middleton (24).

"They came out and played like they had practiced and talked about it," Lillard said. "They played faster, played with a lot of energy and I thought they had a more collective effort, too. They had a lot of guys contribute to the win. We could've done a lot of things better and gave ourselves a little bit of a chance in the end, but it was just too late."

Although the Bucks cut the Knicks' lead to as little as four points in the fourth quarter, Brunson's performance was too much to overcome. He scored or assisted on 51 points and created 18 points off his drives, and his teammates shot 6-of-11 on his passes, according to ESPN Stats & Info. He made 15 field goals, 11 of which were contested.

Brunson has had a lot of success against Milwaukee this season despite New York's 1-3 record in those four games, averaging 35.8 points.

"A lot of times in our coverages, [Brunson has] been able to get to his spots, but we've been able to overall control the game regardless," Lillard said. "But sometimes when a guy gets rolling and they get comfortable and they start feeling good, when it becomes a tight game, it can be a problem."

Still, the Bucks were happy escaping New York with a split over the weekend.

"It was kind of like a playoff matchup," Antetokounmpo said. "We've played this team four times in the past month, month and a half. Two times in the past few days.

"It's a good test for us. We're going to play teams in the playoffs twice [on the road], so being able to win the first one, lose the second one, it's good. We'll learn from it."

Barangay Ginebra beats TNT in Christmas Day game - Sports Interactive Network Philippines

SCOTTIE Thompson made it a Christmas Day to remember for Barangay Ginebra, leading his team back for an 86-78 win over TNT on Monday in the PBA 48th Season Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Thompson nailed two critical three-pointers late to bail out Ginebra, which spent most of the game playing catch-up against a TNT side that led by as many as 13 points while playing without import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson.

Ginebra's sixth win in games was enough to guarantee it a quarterfinal berth as it tied San Miguel at fourth place in the team standings.

The Gin Kings went on an 8-0 run after trailing, 74-71, in the fourth, with Thompson capping that stretch with an offensive rebound and a putback.

Thompson then buried the dagger threes, the last one with 31.2 seconds remaining on the clock for an 85-78 lead.

Thompson also did his job on defense, limiting Calvin Oftana to six points in the final quarter after making 10 in the previous period.

“You look at the start of the game, there’s no Rondae, no Jayson Castro, Mikey Williams is nowhere to be found. It looked like the game was supposed to be easy for us,” said Ginebra coach Tim Cone.

“Coach Jolas came out and just coached a hell of a game out there… It was a real grind for us except for Scottie taking over down the stretch and making a couple of big shots, the game was practically a toss-up,” said Cone.

The former PBA MVP had a huge follow-up to his play in the Meralco victory last Friday when he fired 21 points.

Christian Standhardinger had 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Tony Bishop had 15 points and hauled 12 rebounds.

Oftana finished with a game-high 27 points as he took over from the absence of not just Hollis-Jefferson but also Jayson Castro.

The scores:

Barangay Ginebra 86 – Standhardinger 22, Bishop 15, Thompson 12, Ahanmisi 11, J. Aguilar 11, Malonzo 7, Pringle 6, Tenorio 2, David 0, Onwubere 0.

TNT 78 – Oftana 27, Ponferada 14, Khobuntin 13, Williams 7, Aurin 6, Montalbo 5, Galinato 4, Ganuelas-Rosser 2, Reyes 0.

Samboy Lim’s loss mourned by PBA, NCAA, Letran - ABS-CBN News

MANILA — The PBA, the NCAA, and Colegio de San Juan de Letran mourn the passing of one of the best to ever play for their institutions, Avelino 'Samboy' Lim.

“The PBA mourns the loss of a true icon, a player whose contributions to the league have left an indelible mark on the hearts of basketball enthusiasts across the nation,” the 48-year-old league wrote as they remembered Lim who played for them under San Miguel from 1986 to 1997.

The ‘Skywalker’ won nine PBA championships. He was a Grand Slam champion, a five-time PBA All-Star, and a part of the league’s 25 and 40 Greatest Players.

“His all-out play and boundless heart were not just attributes on the basketball court; they were a testament to the passion and dedication he brought to the sport. Samboy's legacy spans generations, contributing significantly to the popularity and growth of the PBA,” the league said.

“As we bid farewell to a true basketball legend, we remember the joy he brought to countless fans and the pride he instilled in the hearts of Filipinos. Samboy, may you fly high and free like the Skywalker you were known to be,” the PBA added.

Meanwhile, the NCAA said Lim’s greatness extended outside the basketball hardwood.

“He was an exemplary athlete from the time he played in the NCAA up to his stint in the national team and in the pros,” said current league management committee chair Paul Supan.

“He was an inspiration and a model for most, if not all, who have seen him play,” he added.

Finally, Letran paid tribute to one of, if not, its greatest player ever.

“We pray for the eternal repose of the soul of Avelino ‘Samboy’ Lim, Jr., our beloved Letran Knight and a basketball legend who graced the courts with brilliance and left an indelible mark on Philippine sports,” the 403-year-old school said.

Lim won a collegiate Grand Slam from 1982 to 1984 while donning the Knights’ Blue and Red, Letran’s first of two in the almost grand-old-league.

He was also a one-time NCAA league MVP.

"Give them the golden toilet bowl trophy": NBA fans berate Detroit Pistons as unwanted historic record with 26th straight loss looms - Sportskeeda

The Detroit Pistons dropped their 26th straight loss against the Brooklyn Nets and tied the NBA record for most consecutive losses in a single season. The brutal downfall of the once-mighty franchise has been the subject of podcasts and debates, and social media is feasting on their woes.

Of course, as it is on social media, there are different takes, from finger-pointing, mocking and just plain making fun of the Pistons' disappointing season.

The Pistons face the Brooklyn Nets again after Christmas, and another Nets win will make them the sole holder of the infamous record. One fan thinks that they are indeed going for the record.

"They def are going for the record. Someone needs to give them the golden toilet bowl trophy," said Danny Dope on X.

Some are even saying that the NBA should relegate them to the NBA G-League, China or even the WNBA.

Then, there is the finger-pointing. Monty Williams signed a huge contract as the team's next head coach this summer, and he has been under fire from the fans.

Tom Gores bought the team back in 2012. Since then, the franchise went from one of the best teams in the league to the worst. He also gets his fair share of criticism, and some want him to sell the team.

Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores hints changes are coming with GM Troy Weaver's future in murky waters

The Detroit Pistons, enduring a troubling 26-game losing streak, are at a crucial juncture. Owner Tom Gores is dissatisfied with the team's 2-27 record and is hinting at significant changes, raising questions about the future of General Manager Troy Weaver.

“I expect change,” Gores said in a select group of media through a Zoom call. “We expected a lot more. But we have to be real and then there’s some things that hadn’t been working with the makeup of the team. Accountability that has to be held. There might be additions, you know, to staff and all that stuff, but what’s for sure is change is coming.”

Weaver, the basketball official who was prized for forming the OKC Thunder's big three of Russell Westbrook, James Harden and Kevin Durant, is facing intensified scrutiny and must navigate a pivotal month ahead.

The franchise's internal challenges, coupled with on-court struggles, will determine the course of the Detroit Pistons and Weaver's tenure.

“There is no difference” – Superbon says fighting in Muay Thai or kickboxing feels the same - Sportskeeda

Though he is best known for his work as a former ONE featherweight kickboxing world champion, Superbon Singha Mawynn feels right at home in both settings.

After amassing wins over some of the best kickboxers in the world, including Giorgio Petrosyan and Marat Grigorian, the former divisional kingpin will look to claim his first world title in the art of eight limbs.

Standing in his way will be reigning and defending featherweight Muay Thai world champion Tawanchai.

The pair of Thai superstars will meet inside the legendary Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, this Friday night, December 22, to headline an absolutely loaded ONE Friday Fights 46 card.

Speaking with ONE Championship a few short hours away from their highly anticipated title tilt, Superbon revealed that whether it’s kickboxing or Muay Thai, he feels perfectly comfortable competing in both sports.

“I never thought of myself as a kickboxer,” he said. “I have always been a Muay Thai fighter. And I don't think Tawanchai has more Muay Thai experience than me. For me, there is no difference between Muay Thai and kickboxing.”

Tawanchai gunning for the biggest win of his career against Superbon

When Tawanchai steps into the Mecca of Muay Thai to defend his featherweight title for the second time, he will do so on an incredible six-fight win streak spanning nearly two years.

With victories over Niclas Larsen, Petchmorakot, Jamal Yusupov, and ‘Smokin’ Jo Nattawut, Tawanchai knows a thing or two about being in the ring with elite-level talent. But if he can score a win against perhaps the greatest challenge of his combat sports career on Friday night, he will undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters in the history of Muay Thai.

Who will leave the arena with 26 pounds of championship gold and ultimate bragging rights?

Check your local listings or visit ONE Championship's official website on how to watch ONE Friday Fights 46 from your location. Fans in the United States and Canada can catch ONE Friday Fights 46: Tawanchai vs. Superbon via pay-per-view on watch.onefc.com.

Doncic is having another MVP-caliber season and wants to lead the Mavs to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2011.

On the other hand, James Harden has been playing great lately. Harden has started finding his place in the Clippers' rotation and is coming off a season-high 35 points vs the Pacers, with 21 of them coming in the fourth quarter.

Harden has scored 20 or more points in six of the last 10 Clippers games. The former NBA MVP has averages of 17.1 ppg in 21 games for the LA franchise, which has turned things around after a poor start to the season. Both teams share identical records, with 16 wins and 10 losses.

MMA: Pacio, Brooks set for rematch at ONE 166 - ABS-CBN News

Joshua Pacio and Jarred Brooks in their December 2022 showdown. Handout/ONE Championship.
Joshua Pacio and Jarred Brooks in their December 2022 showdown. Handout/ONE Championship.

MANILA — Joshua “The Passion” Pacio is set to headline ONE Championship’s ONE 166.

The former ONE strawweight MMA world champion will be looking to redeem himself as he is set to lock horns with reigning champ Jarred “The Monkey God” Brooks in a five-round faceoff at the Lusail Sports Arena on March 1 in Qatar.

“The holidays will have to be put on hold for me,” said Pacio, who endured a unanimous decision championship defeat against Brooks in December 2022.

“I’m excited for this rematch. You guys better look out for a better Joshua Pacio.”

Following their previous match, “The Passion” trained for two months in the United States with some of the best camps out west.

He then made a career move as Pacio, who fought under the banner of Team Lakay since turning professional, chose to join Eduard Folayang in Lions Nation MMA.

Since then, he has been on a roll, especially after his tough split-decision victory over the Dagestani wrestling machine Mansur Malachiev last October, which brought newfound confidence to Pacio.

“I’m gonna take all my time preparing, working my butt off to make sure that I get that belt again,” he said.

“I feel like I’m more focused this time and I’m confident with what I’m doing because I have a team, I have this brilliant group of people that I can collaborate and brainstorm with, and we can talk about the things that I need entering this fight,” he added.

Aside from their bout, Iran’s Amir Aliakbar, who is coming off three straight knockout victories, will be taking on former ONE heavyweight king Arjan Bhullar of India.

In addition, former ONE flyweight submission grappling world title challengers will also take the stage as Yemeni-Saudi BJJ black belt Osamah Almarwai takes on former IBJJF world champion Cleber Sousa of Brazil.

Curry 3-point streak ends, but Warriors still edge Trail Blazers - Rappler

Klay Thompson scored 28 points on 11-of-16 shooting to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 118-114 victory over the host Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday, December 17 (Monday, December 18, Manila time).

Andrew Wiggins added 25 points on 9-of-12 shooting off the bench as Golden State posted back-to-back wins for the first time since November 1 and 3. The victory was also just the sixth in the past 18 games for the Warriors.

Trayce Jackson-Davis scored 14 points and Jonathan Kuminga had 12 for Golden State, which beat the Trail Blazers for the eighth time in the past nine meetings.

Golden State star Stephen Curry scored just 7 points and missed all eight of his three-point attempts to see his NBA record of 268 consecutive games with at least one three-pointer come to an end. He was 2 of 12 overall.

Jerami Grant scored 30 points for Portland, which dropped its seventh straight game. Anfernee Simons added 24 points after going scoreless in the first half.

Scoot Henderson had 14 points, Shaedon Sharpe scored 12, and Toumani Camara had 11 for the Trail Blazers.

Portland never led in the contest but trailed 113-111 after Sharpe converted a three-point play with 39.1 seconds left.

Golden State’s Chris Paul answered with a 12-foot baseline jumper to make it a four-point margin with 20.9 seconds to play. Simons responded with a three-point play to bring the Trail Blazers within a point with 14.7 seconds remaining.

Curry split two free throws with six seconds left. Deandre Ayton collected the rebound and passed the ball to Sharpe, who was called for a charging foul as he slammed into Golden State’s Brandin Podziemski with 0.6 seconds left.

Podziemski was fouled with 0.3 seconds remaining and made two free throws to sew it up as the Warriors halted a seven-game road losing streak.

Thompson scored on a layup to start an 11-0 burst in the fourth quarter that saw Golden State take a 104-93 lead. Jackson-Davis capped the burst with a dunk with 5:11 remaining.

The Warriors shot 52.9% from the field, including 13 of 38 from three-point range.

Portland made 47.1% of its shots and connected on 13 of 35 from behind the arc.

Golden State led by 16 at halftime before Thompson scored the Warriors’ first 8 points of the third quarter to push their lead to 73-51 with 10:14 left in the quarter.

The Trail Blazers erupted by scoring 31 of the next 40 points to erase the 22-point deficit. Matisse Thybulle knocked down a three-pointer to tie it at 82 with 2:14 remaining in the quarter.

However, Golden State scored 7 of the final 9 points of the third quarter to hold an 89-84 advantage. – Rappler.com

Celtics beat Magic 128-111, remain unbeaten in Boston for the season - USA TODAY

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Celtics keep winning at home.

And this time they did it without their top three big men.

Jayson Tatum scored 30 points, Payton Pritchard added 21 off the bench and the Celtics remained unbeaten in Boston this season with a 128-111 victory over the Orlando Magic on Friday night. The Celtics were playing on back-to-back nights — their third game in four days — and without Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford and even Luke Kornet.

“We had to change our game a little bit,” said Pritchard, who went 6 for 7 from 3-point range and led a bench that outscored Orlando's 47-28. “When you have guys like KP and Al and we get in half-court sets, we need them for sure. But not having them we had to .. use our speed to our advantage.”

Porzingis and Kornet were scratched with muscle tightness, and the 37-year-old Horford got the night off after playing 23 minutes in Thursday night’s win over Cleveland.

The victory was the Celtics’ 13th straight in Boston — the second-longest streak to start a season in franchise history. Bill Russell, Bob Cousy and Tommy Heinsohn led Boston to 17 home wins in a row to open the 1957-58 season.

The Celtics have not lost at home in 20 regular-season games dating to March 5 of last season. (They did lose in last season’s playoffs, including a Game 7 to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference finals.)

“We’ve dropped some games that we should have, or we didn’t want to, over the years at home,” said Jaylen Brown, who scored 18. “The mentality is: You can’t skip any steps. Every shootaround, every practice, every warmup, any time you’re walking to the bus, you’ve got to be aware of what the job is, what the ultimate goal is, and what our mission is. ... I think that’s why we’ve been able to have such a good run at home.”

Derrick White scored 19 points with eight assists and four steals, Sam Hauser also had four steals and Neemias Queta — Boston’s only available 7-footer — blocked three shots. Six-foot-6 Lamar Stevens started at center, and Neemias Queta, playing in his fourth game of the year, blocked three shots.

“It’s great for them when they get their opportunity, they come out and they ball,” Brown said. “Games like this are big for those guys.”

Jalen Suggs scored 19 points and Goga Bitadze had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Magic, who had beaten the Celtics four times in a row. One of them was an In-Season Tournament game in Orlando – Boston’s only loss in the group stage.

The Celtics missed their first eight 3-point attempts before Pritchard sank one with five minutes left in the first quarter to cut a six-point deficit in half. He added another 30 seconds later and one more as the final basket of the quarter during an 18-7 closing run that gave Boston a 30-24 lead.

Orlando came within one point early in the second on back-to-back 3s by Cole Anthony before Boston scored 16 of the next 21 points to pull away. The Celtics led by as many as 16 points in the second quarter and 25 points in the third.

The teams meet again on Sunday in Boston.

Lakers to hang banner that honors NBA Cup win - ESPN

After the Los Angeles Lakers failed to defend their 2020 championship when they lost in the first round to the Phoenix Suns in 2021, general manager Rob Pelinka stated the franchise's aspirations in no uncertain terms.

"We have an insatiable desire and passion to bring banner No. 18 here," Pelinka said at the time, referencing his team's record-tying 17 NBA titles.

Turns out the Lakers will be hanging another banner at Crypto.com Arena to recognize winning the inaugural NBA in-season tournament in Las Vegas, but the team is making sure the NBA Cup victory won't be confused with the ultimate goal of a championship.

The in-season tournament banner will have a different shape and color than the existing gold NBA championship banners that line the rafters. There will also be just one in-season tournament banner that the Lakers will use to honor their win in 2023 and any future years should they win the tournament again.

L.A. will unveil the banner at its next home game, Dec. 18 against the New York Knicks. It also will honor LeBron James and Anthony Davis for being named to the in-season all-tournament team that was announced Monday.

Davis averaged 23.3 points, 14.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.9 blocks while shooting 52.5% from the field through L.A.'s 7-0 showing. He was dominant in the clincher against the Indiana Pacers on Saturday, finishing with 41 points on 16-for-24 shooting, 20 rebounds and four blocks.

James averaged 26.4 points, 8.0 rebounds, 7.6 assists and 1.6 steals while shooting 56.8% from the field and 60.6% from 3 and was named the in-season tournament MVP.

Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, Suns forward Kevin Durant and Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton rounded out the rest of the all-tournament team.

Jacob Cortez downplays Game 2 performance against Mapua - ABS-CBN News

San Beda’s Jacob Cortez. Photo by Mark Demayo, ABS -CBN News.

MANILA — San Beda University was close to suffering yet another collapse despite holding a double-digit advantage in the NCAA Finals.

In Sunday's Game 2 of the NCAA Season 99 Men’s Basketball Finals, the Red Lions, who were once ahead by 15 in the first half, saw their lead disappear and almost allowed Mapua University to complete a sweep.

Fortunately for the Red Lions, Jacob Cortez came to the rescue.

The sweet-shooting point guard scored eight of his game-high 21 points in the final 10 minutes of action, including two three-point bombs that allowed them to overtake and eventually pull away yet again in the payoff period.

For SBU head coach Yuri Escueta, it was Cortez’s leadership and composure that inspired his squad to take home Game 2, especially since this is a statement performance after a horrid Game 1 outing from the guard.

“Si Jacob, after a bad game like that, you know he’s special,” Escueta told reporters following the game.

“Yung mga comeback games na ganito, after a game wherein he struggled. That kid is special. He doesn’t want to lose, he told me at the start of the ballgame,” he added.

But for this version of San Beda’s ‘King Lion’, it was not his heroics, but rather the team’s collective effort that allowed the Mendiola-based squad to avoid a series sweep.

“It’s not just me,” Cortez emphasized.

“The other guys stepped up as well during this game. Not [just] offensively, but defensively, of course.”

Jomel Puno and Yuki Andrada, who both scored nine markers each, also stepped up, especially during their final quarter fightback, and this, for Cortez, was the key to their crucial victory.

“We stuck together after the third quarter, after we were down after a big lead,” he said.

And in the decider, Cortez said that these kinds of efforts are what it will take for them to clinch their first title in five years.

“It’s all about just sticking together as a team.”

PBA Commissioner's Cup Power Rankings: Hotshots stay hot while Ginebra and Beermen stumble - ESPN Australia

As we pass the halfway point of the 2023 PBA Commissioner's Cup elimination round, a couple of teams are beginning to assert themselves, while two perennial contenders struggled in Week 5. Meanwhile, the bottom four might see a shake-up soon.

Here are our Power Rankings for Week 5.

1. Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots (7-0)
Previous rank: 1st

The Magnolia express train keeps on rolling. Two wins in Week 5 gave the Hotshots the first quarterfinal berth of this conference, and at 7-0 they've equaled their best start in franchise history. The Hotshots haven't lost since March 22, and including their 11-0 run in the PBA On Tour, they've now won 18 in a row. Magnolia has hardly missed Calvin Abueva, and even after losing Paul Lee to an ankle injury midway through their Sunday showdown with the San Miguel Beermen, they found a way to pull off a tight 94-90 victory. It was a fitting follow-up to their 21-point demolition of the Blackwater Bossing four nights earlier. Can anyone stop them?

Up next: Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (Dec. 16)

2. Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters (6-1)
Previous rank: 2nd

In last week's Power Rankings, we asked if the Fuel Masters are for real. A week later, the answer took a big step closer toward a resounding "yes." In their only Week 5 assignment, the Fuel Masters took down Barangay Ginebra San Miguel to stretch their winning run to five and placed themselves in good position for a top four slot. The Fuel Masters are getting it done with defense: Their 95.9 points allowed per game is fourth-best in the tournament, and the 77 points scored by Barangay Ginebra was their lowest so far this season.

Up next: NorthPort Batang Pier (Dec. 20)

3. Meralco Bolts (5-1)
Previous rank: 4th

Forced to find a new reinforcement after import Suleiman Braimoh Jr. suffered an Achilles' heel injury, the Bolts appear to have found a gem in Zach Lofton. He debuted with a scorching 54 points in Meralco's drub 26-point drubbing of the NorthPort Batang Pier. It was the Bolts' only Week 5 game, but it was enough to catapult them to solo third with three straight wins, and it came just days after they lost their latest EASL game. Lofton's output was just one point shy of the franchise record of 55 held by Allen Durham. If he can keep it up, Meralco will be a problem for other teams in the playoffs.

Up next: Converge FiberXers (Dec. 17)

4. NorthPort Batang Pier (5-3)
Previous rank: 6th

The Batang Pier's inconsistency was on full display in Week 5, where they played three games. After beating the Converge FiberXers by 16, they registered an impressive 14-point win over the San Miguel Beermen even with import Venky Jois sidelined. But then two days later, with Jois back, they were blown out by the Bolts. A proposed trade with the NLEX Road Warriors could shake things up, though, as the Batang Pier are poised to receive Kris Rosales, Don Trollano and Ben Adamos in exchange for Kent Salado and the rights to Robert Bolick. If approved, NorthPort's backcourt will get a major overhaul.

Up next: Phoenix Super LPG (Dec. 20)

5. Barangay Ginebra San Miguel (4-2)
Previous rank: 3rd

Ginebra saw their three-game winning streak come to an end after they lost to the Fuel Masters in Batangas in their lone Week 5 appearance. Although LA Tenorio is back, Ginebra ill be missing the playmaking of Scottie Thompson for the next couple of weeks, putting the onus on new acquisition Maverick Ahanmisi to step up. Unfortunately Ahanmisi had his worst game so far in a Ginebra uniform, shooting just 1-of-8 and finishing with only four points against the Fuel Masters. Thompson's absence also puts added pressure on the reserves, who are struggling as it is with the bench ranked last in scoring at 18.6 points per game.

Up next: San Miguel Beermen (Dec. 15)

6. Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (2-5)
Previous rank: 10th

That's two wins in a row now for the Elasto Painters as they continue their climb out of a 0-5 hole. New import Demetrius Treadwell has been steadily increasing his numbers, and his 23-point, 18-rebound effort in a Week 5 win against the NLEX Road Warriors could prove to be a sign that he's settled down after a mediocre first two games. Rain or Shane also welcomed back rookie Keith Datu, who had 11 points, 5 rebounds and 4 blocks against NLEX after missing five games due to gout. Late addition rookie Adrian Nocum has also proven to be a revelation, as he's averaged 11.0PPG in his first three games.

Up next: Magnolia Hotshots (Dec. 16)

7. San Miguel Beermen (3-3)
Previous rank: 5th

Life without BPC statistical leader June Mar Fajardo can be tough, as the Beermen found out in Week 5 after they dropped both of their games against the Batang Pier and the Hotshots. Fajardo joins what was already a long list of injured Beermen, including Terrence Romeo, Jeron Teng, Simon Enciso and Kyt Jimenez. It didn't help that CJ Perez struggled mightily against the Magnolia defense, which held him to an atrocious 1-of-15 shooting night and just four points. It's still not panic time for the Beermen, but with the Elasto Painters on the rise, the Batang Pier two games ahead in the win column, and Barangay Ginebra and TNT up next, now would be ideal for them to turn it up several notches.

Up next: Barangay Ginebra San Miguel (Dec. 15) and TNT Tropang Giga (Dec. 17).

8. TNT Tropang Giga (2-3)
Previous rank: 7th

The Tropang Giga had Week 5 off for EASL duties, where they remain winless. Week 6 will be busy for them, though, as they play three games in five days as they try to arrest a two-game losing skid and recover lost ground in the standings.

Up next: NLEX Road Warriors (Dec. 13), Blackwater Bossing (Dec. 15), and San Miguel Beermen (Dec. 17)

9. Terrafirma Dyip (2-4)
Previous rank: 8th

Like the Tropang Giga, the Dyip had Week 5 off. And like TNT, they're out to arrest a losing skid, which in their case has hit three games. They're hoping to get more from top overall pick Stephen Holt, who has had an uneven PBA stint so far. Holt is once again struggling with his shot, shooting just 3-of-21 over their last two games and 31.3% overall.

Up next: Converge FiberXers (Dec. 13)

10. NLEX Road Warriors (2-5)
Previous rank: 9th

Ironically, the suddenly skidding Road Warriors haven't won a game since replacing the volatile Thomas Robinson with Stokley Chaffee, Jr. Their third loss was dealt by the Elasto Painters in their only Week 5 appearance, a game which they led for most of the first three quarters before falling flat in the fourth. The Road Warriors have been hit by the injury bug, with only seven players suiting up in all their games so far, and they can't seem to get everyone healthy at the same time. Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser has played in just three games so far and is still struggling with his shot: He's averaging just 5.3 points on 33% shooting. Will the proposed trade with the Batang Pier turn around their tournament?

Up next: TNT Tropang Giga (Dec. 13)

11. Blackwater Bossing (1-6)
Previous rank: 11th

It wasn't a surprise that Blackwater lost big in their only Week 5 appearance as they faced the streaking Hotshots. The 21-point beatdown was the largest so far in their six-game losing streak, and their window to the quarterfinals continues to narrow. The Bossing's offense is stagnant as they're 11th in points per game (94.4), and the lack of a reliable playmaker is evident as they're last in assists (18.9). They're also the worst rebounding team by a large margin as their 32.7 rebounds per game is 5.5 rebounds fewer than the next team. Their nine-day break between games should help them sort things out.

Up next: TNT Tropang Giga (Dec. 15)

12. Converge FiberXers (0-6)
Previous rank: 12th

Not even a change in imports could net the FiberXers their elusive first win. It took team management five games before deciding to ship out Tom Vodanovich, who is a hardworking rebounder and team player but simply not as gifted a scorer as the other imports, and replace him with former Los Angeles Clipper Jamil Wilson. Unfortunately the result was the same as the FiberXers lost to the Batang Pier by 16 despite 30 points from Wilson. Converge made another roster change, signing up second-round pick JL Delos Santos in lieu of Mac Tallo, but that move doesn't look to move the needle much.

Up next: Terrafirma Dyip (Dec. 13) and Meralco Bolts (Dec. 17)
