Richard Bachmann is new PSC chairman - Manila Bulletin

Richard Bachmann is a former Alaska governor in the PBA. (File Photo)

Richard Bachmann, son of former basketball Olympian, is now the new chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

He’s the second official with vast Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) experience to be named as head of the government sports agency in four months.

The former manager of the now-defunct Alaska Milk in the PBA will replace Noli Eala, who once served as commissioner of Asia’s first play-for-pay league.

Eala has only been in position for four months.

Bachmann’s appointment reached the government sports agency’s office on Wednesday, Dec. 28, a day after Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin signed his appointment paper,

Also known as “Dickie”, Bachmann is currently the basketball commissioner in the UAAP and the PBA 3×3 chairman – positions he will relinquish as soon as he arrives from the United States.

Office of the Press Secretary OIC Cheloy Garafil also confirmed Bachmann’s appointment.

Also named to the PSC Board were Edward Hayco and Walter Torres.

Hayco stepped down as Cebu City Sports Commission Chief in February after serving for 12 years while Torres is the secretary general of the Philippine Paralympic Committee.

They will join Bong Coo as one of the commissioners, leaving only one spot left to fill the five-man Board.

Cayco thanked various stakeholders for believing in his grassroots program as Cebu’s sports czar.

Hayco took his oath at the Malacañang also on Wednesday.

Bachmann’s father, Kurt, played for the PH team during the 1960 Rome Olympics.

Yuka Saso proud of strong Filipino-Japanese ties - Manila Bulletin

Junior golfers Levone Talion; Precious Zaragosa; Quincy Yongche Pilac; Jorgie Handog; Kamilla del Mundo; Gabie Rosca; Reese Ng; (L-R, back) Federal Land President and COO Thomas Mirasol and Fil-Japanese pro-golfer Yuka Saso

By NIKOLE JAVIER

Yuka Saso sees a special connection between her Filipino and Japanese roots as she returns to the country to give a glimpse of her world-class talent.

In a ceremonial tee-off at Mitsukoshi BGC, the first Japanese-inspired mall in the Philippines, Saso showcased her swing in front of the junior golfers and enthusiasts.

“We believe that strong partnerships are essential for reaching greater excellence and higher standards in the industry. During our golden year, we showcase Japanese ingenuity and Filipino sensibilities in our projects, thereby projecting the best of both worlds in terms of quality and innovation. Our collaboration with Yuka Saso is yet another example of achieving this objective. We are very excited to have her grace the first-ever MITSUKOSHI in the Philippines and interact with some of our local patrons,” Federal Land President and COO Thomas Mirasol said.

The 21-year-old Saso, who clinched her first US Women’s Open title in 2021, had a bumpy year trying to earn a follow-up victory in the LPGA Tour.

With her busy schedule in the US, Saso, born and raised in the Philippines, would like to come back more often to the country and stay a lot longer than she has the past couple of years.

“I would want to come back more often. But with the schedule of the tournaments, it’s hard to come back. December and January are the only times I can come back. Hopefully, I can come back around summertime where there’s a lot of junior tournaments I can visit,” said Saso.

Saso returned to the country with her father and is about to spend some time with her relatives before leaving for Florida in January.

For the meantime though, she’s not leaving out either heritage as she continues her international campaigns.

“Like I’m always saying, it’s awesome. I’ve seen a lot on the side of the Philippines and Japan as well and you know, I’ve taken the good sides of both countries. I’ll never forget my life here in the Philippines. It’s awesome to come back. It feels like home,” concluded Saso.

Injury Report: Steph Curry Won't Need Surgery For Shoulder Injury - Sports Illustrated

It was announced on Thursday that Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry is expected to miss a few weeks with a labrum injury in his left shoulder. While the news is disappointing for the Warriors and their fans, the worst case scenario seems to have been avoided. According to a report by The Athletic's Shams Charania, Curry will not need surgery on his shoulder.

"Sources tell me that Steph Curry has sustained a labrum injury in that left shoulder," Charania said. "It's not believed to be super serious, because it could have been a case where a torn labrum, and surgery, and you're out - this jeopardizes most of the remainder of the season. But in this case, I'm told surgery is not expected to be required. He's gonna be reevaluated in about two weeks, and the expectation is that he will be out even beyond that, probably closer to a month before Steph Curry can return to the floor."

Charania added that this is a major blow for a Warriors team that has struggled even with Curry in the lineup, and a major blow for the NBA as well, especially with Christmas Day coming up.

Curry had been playing at an MVP level for the Warriors, and will now be sidelined for around a month while they look to keep pace in the Western Conference.

Luis Scola named FIBA World Cup 2023 Global Ambassador - BasketNews.com

Luis Scola will be one of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Global Ambassadors.

Luis Scola has been named a FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Global Ambassador, with the event tipping off on August 25 in the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia.

Scola, the World Cup's second all-time top scorer with 716 points, is one of the true legends of the competition. He appeared in five editions, and his mark of 41 games played is tied for first in the competition's history with Brazilian great Ubiratan Pereira Maciel.

Scola was there when Argentina came within a whisker of winning the title at the 2002 World Cup in Indianapolis but fell in overtime.

At the 2006 World Cup in Japan, Scola's role had grown more important. He shot 55.3% from the field and averaged 14.3 points and seven rebounds as Argentina made it to the semi-final before suffering a 75-74 heartbreak to Spain.

The 2010 World Cup in Turkey saw Scola turn in some of his finest performances. His 27.1 points per game scoring average were the highest in the tournament. One of his efforts was unforgettable, and it came in the Round of 16 against Brazil. Scola poured in 37 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Argentina prevailed in a 93-89 thriller.

To the very end, Scola was a leading light for Argentina. At 40, he dominated the 2019 event in China, with his 28-point, 13-rebound performance in an 80-66 semi-final triumph over France helping clinch a spot in the World Cup title game for the second time in his career. Scola was named to the All-Star Five.

The Argentinian legend didn't just shine at World Cups but also in five Olympic tournaments.

In 2004, Scola played an integral role as his country won the Olympic gold medal in Athens. He captured a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Games and was a semi-finalist at the 2012 Olympics in London.

At the next Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2016, he served as Argentina's flagbearer during the Opening Ceremony. He became a five-time Olympian at the Tokyo Games, which were played in 2021.

Scola also played in numerous FIBA AmeriCups, reaching the podium nine times. In 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2015, Scola was MVP at the event.

"I'm truly honored to be a World Cup Global Ambassador and to take on this new role," Scola said.

"I always wanted to represent Argentina, to sing the national anthem before games and to play alongside so many amazing players, and for great coaches. We always set out to win tournaments, but the most important thing was to give our best, to be good role models, and to play for our country.

Being part of our Golden Generation with so many amazing players has also been a very special experience. Playing every summer was also a priority because it helped me maintain my fitness for the following season.

We had amazing victories. While there were some disappointing results, we won more than we lost and learned many life lessons along the way," the former NBA big man continued.

"Maybe the biggest was that with perseverance, togetherness, and a shared vision, a team can achieve more than is expected. If all players, all teams, take that approach next year, this will be another unforgettable World Cup across the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia."

Heroes aplenty as San Miguel zeroes in on PBA semis after whipping Converge - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – San Miguel displayed its playoff caliber and picked Converge apart, 114-96, to move one win away from the semifinals of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the PhilSports Arena on Wednesday, December 7.

CJ Perez starred with 25 points, while June Mar Fajardo and Devon Scott both finished with double-doubles as the defending champion Beermen drew first blood in their best-of-three affair against the fourth seed FiberXers.

A strong second quarter proved to be the turning point for San Miguel, which entered the break with a commanding 55-32 lead and coasted the rest of the way en route to its fifth straight victory.

The win saw the Beermen avenge their 106-102 loss to Converge in the elimination round, a defeat where San Miguel played without Fajardo and Terrence Romeo due to injuries.

But with the two stars back on board, the Beermen flaunted their full strength and dealt the FiberXers – once the hottest team in the league with seven consecutive wins – their third loss in a row.

Fajardo put up 19 points, 16 rebounds, and 3 steals, while Romeo netted 13 points, 7 coming in the second quarter where San Miguel outscored Converge 34-19 to pull away after a seven-point lead at the end of the opening period.

Scott delivered all-around numbers 23 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals as he continued to be on a roll after losing to the FiberXers in his PBA debut.

Down 77-97 with eight minutes left, Converge staged a last-ditch comeback and got within 11 points off a 10-1 spurt powered by Aljun Melecio and import Quincy Miller.

But Scott, Fajardo, and Perez connived for a 14-5 run that restored a 112-92 lead for the Beermen.

Simon Enciso fell short of a double-double with 8 points, 10 assists, and 4 rebound for San Miguel after getting the boot with six minutes left for incurring two technical fouls.

The Beermen remained without head coach Leo Austria as assistant coach Jorge Gallent called the shots anew.

Miller carried the FiberXers with 41 points, 13 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals, but Converge just could not get the job done after an ice-cold outing from beyond the arc, converting just 6 of its 41 three-pointers (14%).

In contrast, the FiberXers averaged 13 triples on a 32% clip prior to the playoffs.

Justin Arana turned in 11 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks in the loss, while Melecio and Abu Tratter chalked up 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Converge is one loss away from crashing out of the quarterfinals, a possibility that seemed remote after its stellar run in the eliminations that saw it win eight of its first 10 games.

But the FiberXers ended the elimination round with a dud, losing their last two games to bow out of contention for the twice-to-beat advantage and settle for the fourth seed.

The Scores

San Miguel 114 – Perez 25, Scott 23, Fajardo 19, Romeo 13, Lassiter 11, Enciso 8, Tautuaa 6, Ross 5, Cruz 4, Brondial 0.

Converge 96 – Miller 41, Melecio 11, Arana 11, Tratter 10, Ahanmisi 7, Teng 5, DiGregorio 5, Ilagan 4, Stockton 2, Bulanadi 0, Tolomia 0, Racal 0, Ambohot 0.

Quarters: 21-13, 55-32, 88-65, 114-96.

Lakers News: Lakers' Luck Runs Out, Team Falls 116-102 To Cavs - Sports Illustrated

This was bound to happen at some point.

Los Angeles Lakers center Anthony Davis's charmed run over his last ten games came to an abrupt end tonight, when he had to leave late in the first quarter with flu-like symptoms.

Per Mike Trudell of Lakers.com, L.A. head coach Darvin Ham revealed postgame that Davis had tried to play through a 101-degree fever, before ultimately departing the game having suited up for just 8:07. Trudell adds that the team will reveal more tomorrow about AD's availability for L.A.'s contest Wednesday against the Toronto Raptors.

At the start of the night at least, Davis connected with a cutting LeBron James for a solid slam:

Without Davis available to man the paint for the majority of the night, the Lakers surrendered 70 points inside, having entered the game having limited opposing clubs to just 51.8 points in the paint, Trudell adds.

LeBron James operated a bit more freely inside, gobbling up 17 rebounds on the night. Here he is turning a defensive rebound into a fast break layup:

James was more primed to play more of an inside-outside game. Watch him scramble here to recover a loose ball for a hammer slam:

Los Angeles was able to keep things relatively close even with Davis out for much of the first half -- until the Cavaliers closed out the second quarter on a 15-4 tear, to take a halftime edge of 57-49:

The Lakers, thanks mostly to the play of James, Dennis Schröder, and Lonnie Walker IV, were able to slightly shave that Cleveland lead to just one possession, 85-83, through the third quarter.

Through the first few minutes the fourth frame, timely offense from a guard-heavy Lakers lineup comprising Russell Westbrook, Schröder, Austin Reaves, James and Thomas Bryant helped keep L.A. in the hunt. But with the game knotted at 92-92 with 8:32 remaining in regulation, All-Star Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell effectively went bonkers, keying a 24-10 closing run (Mitchell personally outscored L.A. with 15 points of his own in that stretch) and finalizing the victory.

The guy is just an unreal shotmaker. He finished with a game-most 43 points on 17-of-27 shooting:

One of the few bright spots of tonight's loss was the play of reserve center Bryant, compelled into a bigger role with Davis sidelined. In 28:10, Bryant scored 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 shooting from the charity stripe. He also pulled down nine rebounds and dished out a dime.

For the Lakers, James finished with a team-high 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting, along with the aforementioned 17 rebounds, plus four assists, a steal and a block. Three other Lakers (Bryant, Schröder and Westbrook) scored in double figures.

L.A. falls to a 10-13 record on the season, and will try to get back into the winners' column as their road trip continues tomorrow up north.

Weightlifting World Championships 2022: Hidilyn Diaz bids for first world title in Bogota - Olympics

Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo is in Colombia ahead of weightlifting's 2022 IWF World Championships in Bogota which starts on Monday (5 December).

The Philippines' only Olympic champion to date will bid for her first world title in the Colombian capital with her 55kg competition taking place on Wednesday.

Diaz-Naranjo won 55kg gold at Tokyo 2020 last year, but that weight class has been dropped for Paris 2024 where she plans to move up to 59kg in what would be her fifth and final Olympic Games.

For now, she is remaining in her usual class and hoping to add more hardware to her collection at the first World Championships to be staged in South America.

The IWF World Championships is also the first qualification event for the Paris Games with valuable ranking points up for grabs.

Diaz-Naranjo leads a 10-strong Filipino team in Bogota.

Having married her strength and conditioning coach, Julius Naranjo, in July, the star lifter had to get back to studies.

Last month, she successfully defended her thesis which will enable her to complete her degree in business management from Manila's De La Salle College of Saint Benilde.

Hidilyn Diaz steps up training ahead of Worlds

With that academic milestone ticked off, Diaz-Naranjo has been able to focus fully again on her sporting career.

Before flying to Colombia, she was in the United States at a star-studded training camp in Suwanee, Georgia.

Joining her were Canada's Olympic 64kg champion Maude Charron, 76kg Tokyo silver medallist Katherine Vibert (formerly Nye), and two-time Pan American champion Jourdan Delacruz.

Diaz-Naranjo recently revealed that, despite being an Olympic champion, she still finds it difficult to fund her training, travelling and competition expenses.

But she greatly enjoyed this experience ahead of her first major competiton since retaining her South East Asian Games title in May.

Speaking after that triumph in Vietnam, she told Olympics.com “This is the beginning of my journey towards Paris 2024. I'm excited. [It will be a] little bit challenging to qualify again in Paris. But again, I will do my best with Team HD.

"For us to qualify and win again the gold medal in Olympics - we will do our best." - Hidilyn Diaz in May 2022

Who will Hidilyn Diaz compete against at Bogota IWF World Championships?

With her entry total weight of 210.0kg, Diaz has been seeded number two behind Colombia's Rosalba Morales who certainly will not lack for home support.

Morales won South American Games gold in Asuncion, Paraguay in October with a total of 201.0kg which marks her out as a genuine medal contender.

The clean and jerk silver medallist at the 2018 Junior World Championships is some way behind Diaz-Naranjo's Olympic record of 224.0kg, but the crowd could easily inspire her to a new personal best.

Morales is stronger in the snatch then the clean and jerk, and will need to establish an early lead if she is to challenge for gold.

Kazakhstan's Olympic bronze medallist and reigning Asian champion Zulfiya Chinshanlo had been set to challenge Diaz-Naranjo, but her name is missing from the official entry list.

The third seed in Bogota is USA's fast-rising Shayla Moore Hutchins who is based at the Power and Grace Performance Gym where the Filipino star had her recent camp of Olympians.

Moore Hutchins only started lifting four years ago after competing in acrobatics and tumbling while at Baylor University, but she's making up for lost time and won her first international competition - the Pan American Championships in Bogota - in July.

Like Diaz-Naranjo, the 27-year-old is stronger in the clean and jerk although she will probably have to improve significantly on her 193.0kg total from July to make the medals.

READ MORE: Top things to know about the 2022 IWF World Championships

Youth could make a hefty impression in the competition with 18-year-old Uzbek lifter Nigora Abdullaeva competing at her first senior World Championships having won youth world gold in 2019.

Abdullaeva took snatch and combined bronze at October's Asian Championships in Bahrain behind Chinshanlo with a total of 193.0kg.

Romania's Andreea Cotruta, 19, leads the European challenge with 22-year-old Mongolian Enkhtamir Enkhbaatar and Mexican duo Irene Borrago, 21, and Tokyo Olympic finallist Ana Gabriela Lopez, a relative veteran at 28, also among the top seeds.

Peru's Shoely Mego, 23, is the last of the seeds with a declared entry weight in excess of 200.0kg.

Letran Knights beat St. Benilde in Game One of NCAA Finals - Sports Interactive Network Philippines

LETRAN pounced on a hobbling St. Benilde side to draw first blood in the NCAA Season 98 seniors basketball tournament finals, 81-75, on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Fran Yu and Tommy Olivario delivered the finishing touches in the Knights' Game One win, calmly sinking their free throws in the final 23.4 seconds left to preserve a six-point affair and push the defending champions a win away from their dream three-peat.

Louie Sangalang posted a career-best 24 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block to carry his side to the victory.

King Caralipio also drained the big floater with 5:29 to play that made it a 75-69 for his 16 points, two assists, and one steal, while Kurt Reyson shot 3-of-8 from deep for his 13 points, four boards, and three dimes.

Brent Paraiso also chimed in nine points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals before fouling out with 3:49 left, and Yu got seven points, five boards, and five dimes.

"Again, yung composure ng mga veterans, yun yung ginamit namin which is yung experience," said coach Bonnie Tan. "Ang sa akin lang, sinabi lang namin na we will not win if we will outscore lang yung Benilde. We have to focus and correct our defensive rules."

Game Two is on Sunday, still at the Big Dome.

Presumptive MVP Will Gozum powered the Blazers with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and two assists, but had to deal with cramps and had to exit late in the third quarter before checking in with 50.4 seconds remaining.

Miggy Corteza also defied a cramping left quad muscle and still produced 18 points and two boards, scoring back-to-back buckets to keep CSB in the game, 76-73 in the last 3:09.

Cramps, though, was the biggest bane for the Blazers with six players, including Mark Sangco, Robi Nayve, JC Cullar, and Makoy Marcos all going down in different points of the game.

CSB also played without Migs Oczon for all but two minutes of the game after suffering a left ankle sprain early in the first quarter.

Yada, De Roey and Yubol Share Lead After Round One of Q-Series - LPGA

The first of eight rounds in LPGA Q-Series is complete with three women sharing the lead. Britney Yada, Manon De Roey and Arpichaya Yubol signed for low 7-under par 64, taking a one-shot edge over the rest of the field.

Yada, who was exempt into Q-Series after finishing the Epson Tour season at No. 22 in the Ascensus Race for the Card, almost went bogey free to open the week. The 31-year-old carded eight birdies and a lone bogey on the day.

“I chipped in on the first hole, so I was like, okay, that's a good start,” said Yada. “I just putted super well today. I made a lot of like mid-range putts, and I just told myself if I could just get my irons within makable range I had a good chance of making them.”

After missing the signup deadline over the summer for Stage II, Yada feared she wouldn’t have the opportunity to compete for an LPGA Tour card this season. An Epson Tour victory at the Murphy USA El Dorado Shootout not only put her in a comfortable position to be exempt this week, but also gave her confidence that she still carries over two months later.

“That [win] really helped the confidence a lot,” said Yada. “I finally believe that I can do it and that I belong here. I kind of looked back on that today actually, like you can do this, you can get through. It turned out to be a good day.”

De Roey, a Ladies European Tour (LET) member who was exempt based on the Order of Merit, was feeling both the excitement and nerves during her Q-Series debut. The Belgian went 1-under par through her first four holes, carding three birdies and a double bogey.

“It's my first time playing at Q-School for the LPGA, so I'm just excited to be here,” said De Roey. “It was a bit of a crazy start.”

After hitting into a hazard and double bogeying No. 3 of the RTJ Trail at Magnolia Grove Falls Course, De Roey finished her round with a clean scorecard. She bounced back with six more birdies on the day, nine total. The 30-year-old credits her personality, as well as her friend and caddie for the ability to let go of bad shots and move on.

“I feel like as a player I'm pretty calm, so I'm easily forgetting about the bad shots,” said De Roey. “With my caddie, Laura, today we had a lot of fun. We have a lot of fun on the course, and we laugh a lot, so it's fun. It helps.”

Like Yada, Yubol also went almost bogey-free. The Thai carded eight birdies on the day, five of which were consecutive to finish her round. Unfortunately, she walked off the last hole of the Crossings Course with a bogey.

“I just enjoyed my game because this is first round,” said Yubol. “I played my game and my plan on every hole and just smiled and was happy with my caddie [throughout the round].”

Yubol said she struggled with the cold weather this morning, which is very different than the warm Thailand weather she’s used to playing in. As the day went on, she found that everything was working well for her, especially her putter.

Laura Wearn and Lauren Hartlage follow close behind the leading trio, rounding out the top five at 6-under. Wearn carded five birdies and a lone eagle, while Hartlage bounced back from her opening bogey with seven birdies.

A total of 60 players shot even-par or better, with notable names including Su Oh (-4), Bianca Pagdanganan (-4), Karen Chung (-2), Alexa Pano (E) and Kim Kaufman (E).

QUICK QUOTES

Kim Kaufman (E, T39) on a hole-in-one on No. 6:

“I hit a five iron and didn’t hit it super solid. It was cold and a little into the wind, so I was just begging it go get over the bunker. It landed on [the green] and we saw it roll and looked like it disappeared, but you can’t see it well enough to know if it went in, so nobody said anything. It was a bit anticlimactic to say the least.”

Nataliya Guseva (-5, T6) on a bogey-free round:

“It was awesome. I would say I just enjoyed playing today. Kind of took my time. I wasn't really rushing because I know it's going to be like a marathon of golf, so I'm just enjoying here, playing as just a practice round, because, I mean, eight rounds of golf is just a lot.”

Heather Lin (-5, T6) on her feelings about round one:

“Obviously today was pretty challenging to start with. Really cold and really wet. The conditions were not very easy. I was telling myself to hit all the fairways you can because you have preferred lies, hit all the greens possible and give myself a lot of birdie chances.”
