Warriors fans dig up 11-year-old Steph Curry tweet during halftime of Suns-Dubs - SFGate

A first-half hamstring injury for Phoenix Suns All-Star Devin Booker took some steam out of what was billed as the steamiest game of the still-young 2021-22 NBA season Tuesday night between the 17-3 Suns and 18-2 Golden State Warriors.

Booker was ruled out for the remainder of the game after tweaking his hammy on a second-quarter drive to the bucket, leaving Suns fans filled with disappointment and Warriors fans filled with, well, boredom.

Dubs fans very weirdly dug up a 2010 tweet ("very sloppy bball being played right now") from two-time MVP Stephen Curry that was sent during Game 2 of a 92-77 Orlando Magic win against the Charlotte Hornets in the 2009-10 playoffs, which, obviously, the Warriors didn't make.

Also, to be fair, there were 33 turnovers combined in that game.

OK, back to the weird tweet situation: In January, former Warrior Andrew Bogut said that Curry used to check his Twitter mentions at halftime when they played together (from 2009-2016 and again in 2019) to try to motivate himself after poor first halves. So, of course, very-online (too-online?) Warriors fans leaned deeply into that possibility, blowing the 11-year-old tweet up with replies and quote tweets motivating (?) Curry to turn things around in the second half.

The Dubs superstar went just 3-for-13 in the first half thanks to a great team defensive effort from Phoenix. He followed that up by hitting just 1 of his next 8 shots as the Warriors went back and forth with the Booker-less Suns in Arizona before losing late on a 10-1 run from Phoenix that put the game out of reach, 104-96.

The Rockets Hilariously Conspired to Get Kevin Porter Jr. His First Triple Double - Sports Illustrated

Does this really even count?

Monday night was an important milestone for Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr. For the first time in his three-year NBA career, Porter notched a triple double in Houston’s win over the Thunder. But the box score doesn’t tell the whole story.

The Rockets built a sizable lead in the final minutes of the fourth quarter and both teams emptied their benches. But Porter, a starter, stayed on the court because he was one rebound shy of his first triple double. When OKC’s ThĂ©o Maledon squared up for a three-point attempt, Porter positioned himself right below the rim, ready to haul in that precious 10th rebound. But the ball clanged hard off the back of the rim and ricocheted well over Porter’s head.

Luckily for Porter, his teammates were determined to get him that rebound. Alperen ƞengĂŒn tipped the ball back toward him and Josh Christopher pleaded frantically with Porter to come retrieve it. Porter snagged the ball and, although the official scorer initially didn’t credit him with the rebound, the crowd gave him a hearty round of applause when the triple double was confirmed.

Games like Porter’s are exactly why the triple double has lost prestige in recent years. In addition to his 11 assists and nine legitimate rebounds, he finished with 11 points on 4-of-17 shooting (1-of-8 from three). That’s 23.5%, not exactly a career performance. But he reached that magic double-digit threshold in the big three counting stats, even though he might look back on that box score years from now and be embarrassed by how he got that last rebound.

Fans and analysts might not be that impressed by the triple double anymore, but the appeal of the achievement to players is undeniable. There’s a long tradition of NBA players going all out to try to get their 10th point, rebound or assist. Who can forget Ricky Davis's attempting a layup on his own basket in 2003? Or Andray Blatche's throwing a mini tantrum when a teammate grabbed a rebound from him in '10? There was also a 1996 game where Anthony Bowie called a timeout with 2.7 seconds left and his team up 20 just to try to get another assist, which led Doug Collins to pull his Pistons off the floor in disgust. A manufactured triple double is lame, but you have to appreciate how creative players can get when they’re chasing stats like that.

Jonas Valanciunas does his best Steph Curry impersonation in Pelicans' win over Clippers - CBSSports.com

jonas-valanciunas-pelicans-getty.jpg
Getty Images

Jonas Valanciunas has turned himself into a pretty big-time offensive player over the past few seasons, and his ability on that end of the floor is one of the main reasons why the New Orleans Pelicans traded for him this summer. But even they could not have expected nights like the one he had on Monday, when he did his best Steph Curry impersonation in a 123-104 win over the Clippers

Valanciunas hit a 3-pointer for the Pelicans' first points of the game and never looked back. He finished with a career-high 39 points, 15 rebounds and three assists. His seven 3-pointers, which all came in the first half, were also a career-high.

In the process he became the first player since Trevor Ariza in 2014 to go at least 7 of 7 from 3-point range in one half. Furthermore, he joined Curry as the only players in the league to put up 35 points, 10 rebounds and seven 3s in a game this season. If you want to extend those statistical markers even further, he's only the fourth player in NBA history with at least 35 points, 15 rebounds and seven 3s.

But no matter which way you look at it, this was a stunning performance from Valanciunas. The Pelicans' announcers were cackling by his fourth make, and by the sixth one -- which rattled around the rim and somehow went down -- his teammates were jumping up and down on the bench in a frenzy.

Thanks to Valanciunas' hot start, the Pelicans jumped out to a 15-point lead after the first quarter and were able to coast from there. His only 3-point attempt in the second half came early in the fourth quarter and had his teammates up off the bench. Unfortunately that one missed so badly it didn't even hit the rim.

No worries, as Valanciunas closed the show with a breakaway slam that had the Pels' announcers yelling "dance on 'em, Jonas!"

"The guys were calling him 'Dirk' Valanciunas," Pelicans coach Willie Green said. "But we want him shooting. We want him shooting the ball when he's open. He still wants to go to the post, which I love about him. He's a physical guy, but just explaining to him how it's gonna open our offense up with his ability to shoot the ball the way he can, and it was amazing tonight."

Expecting Valanciunas to have nights like this on a regular basis is obviously unrealistic, but if he can be a legitimate threat from 3-point range that would do wonders for the Pelicans, especially once Zion Williamson comes back. The Pelicans' young star is a dominant interior force, and his life would be much easier if Valanciunas can step outside and clear the lane for his dynamic drives to the basket.

George Kambosos defeats Teofimo Lopez by split decision to become new unified lightweight champion - ESPN

NEW YORK -- Teofimo Lopez promised a first-round knockout and pushed hard to accomplish just that by unloading on George Kambosos, but in a stunner, the opening round to their fight Saturday night ended with the champion on the canvas.

Turns out, the knockdown wasn't a fluke but a harbinger of what was to come. Kambosos, the underdog from Australia, survived a 10th-round knockdown to score a split-decision victory over Lopez in a major upset to claim the WBO, WBA, IBF and WBC franchise lightweight championship at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden.

One judge scored 114-113 for Lopez, with the other two judges scoring for Kambosos, 115-112 and 115-111.

"I believed in myself, I backed myself," said Kambosos, 28. "I thought, 'I'm going to hit him hard and put him down,' and the fight changed off that. ... I'm an unbelievable boxer. I can't believe how good I boxed."

Fans surely couldn't believe the fight finally happened. The bout was set for June 19 in Miami before Lopez contracted COVID-19, spiraling the event into a quagmire of legal threats in a soap opera that was crazy even by boxing standards.

Triller won the rights to the fight at February's purse bid with a commitment of $6.018 million, but the IBF found the company in default and awarded the bout to Matchroom Boxing's Eddie Hearn.

After eight date changes along with numerous stops and starts to training camp, a bout that was viewed as a mismatch -- a routine title defense for a rising star -- grew into an event of intrigue.

And the fight delivered beyond anyone's wildest expectations. Following the opening round that concluded with Lopez on the deck, the pair exchanged in a firefight for the duration of the evening.

Lopez (16-1, 12 KOs) found his mark with plenty of overhand rights, but so, too, did Kambosos. Surprisingly, Kambosos was the cleaner puncher. He was also the fresher fighter.

Kambosos (20-0, 10 KOs) buckled Lopez at the tail end of Round 4 and took control of the bout. He worked the jab and followed up with looping rights that marked Lopez's face up. By the time the decision was rendered, Lopez's left eye was bleeding profusely, and so was his nose. He also had a gash under his right eye.

"I don't care what anybody says, man," Lopez said afterward. "I won this fight."

For Lopez, it was a shocking fall from grace. Just 13 months ago, Lopez upset future Hall of Famer Vasiliy Lomachenko to claim four lightweight titles in a career-defining victory. The landmark win earned Lopez the No. 7 spot in ESPN's pound-for-pound rankings and seemingly set him on the path to superstardom.

Following a career-long layoff, a battle with COVID-19 and all the chaos that swirled around the rescheduled bout, Lopez appeared lethargic and tired over the last eight rounds Saturday night.

"They've been draining me all the time," Lopez, 24, said of his difficulty to make the 135-pound limit.

Kambosos was ahead on all three scorecards when Lopez floored him with a punishing right hand. The first-time title challenger was on unsteady legs but still fired back as he attempted to regain his balance.

By the time Round 11 rolled around, he had found his senses. Over the championship rounds, Kambosos gained the judges' favor on a possible four out of six frames.

"It wasn't a big knockdown," said Kambosos, who entered the bout rated No. 9 by ESPN at 135 pounds. "I wanted to feel the power. [I thought], 'I'm going to punish him for what he just done to me.'"

With the victory, Kambosos is now the top fighter in one of boxing's most stacked divisions. Lightweight is home to Devin Haney, Gervonta Davis, Ryan Garcia and Joseph Diaz Jr.

It might not be home to Lopez any longer. He said he plans to move up to 140 pounds, and hoped for a shot at undisputed champion Josh Taylor.

After Saturday's loss, it's unclear where Lopez heads next, but Kambosos' path is far more certain.

"Right now, he's the boss," said his promoter, Lou DiBella. "He earned it tonight. It was a mandatory [title defense]. There's no rematch clause. We're going to do whatever's in [George's] best interests from a business perspective.

"He's going to sit back, take a little time off, and enjoy the victory. Then we're going to figure out the biggest fight we can make."

10 observations: Bulls bounce back with blowout win vs. Magic - NBC Sports Chicago

The Chicago Bulls entered Friday’s road matchup with the Magic in danger of extending a disconcerting malaise.

But the Bulls took care of business and walloped Orlando 123-88, bouncing back in a big way from uninspiring losses to the Pacers and Rockets earlier in the week. They move to 13-7 with the result, good for a 53-win pace at the quarter-mark of the campaign.

"We went through a little adversity," Coby White noted postgame. "But we responded well tonight."

Here are 10 observations:

1. Nikola Vučević played his first game in Orlando since the Magic, with whom he spent eight-and-a-half seasons and grew into an All-Star, traded him to the Bulls in March. He received applause and chants of “Vooch” after being introduced, and scored the Bulls’ first points of the night on a right-handed hook.

From there, Vučević put together a solid outing of 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists and a block, shooting an encouraging 7-for-13 from the floor. He played 29 minutes after logging 26 against the Rockets in his return from COVID-19, and said postgame that, while still not 100 percent, he’s feeling better each game.

2. The Bulls and Magic played to a 27-27 tie through one quarter, but the visitors engineered a 16-0 run to begin that second that gave them double-digit separation, which they built upon the rest of the night.

The formula for that spurt was familiar, as the Bulls turned an avalanche of Orlando turnovers into transition opportunities left and right. The Bulls swiped six steals, and scored seven points off six turnovers, in the period, bringing a level of defensive intensity that was inconsistent in Wednesday’s loss to the Rockets.

Billy Donovan also tweaked his rotation a bit to have Lonzo Ball, DeMar DeRozan and Vučević on the floor at the start of the second quarter after Zach LaVine played all 12 minutes of the first, a well-timed adjustment.

3. On both ends of the floor, White looked the most comfortable he’s been since returning from shoulder rehab, a seven-game stretch that’s featured a good deal of rockiness.

At the half, White was tied with LaVine for the team lead in scoring, pouring in 14 points on 6-for-7 shooting. He drilled a pair of off-the-dribble jumpers, and banked home a contested layup, in the first quarter, then added two fastbreak layups and a catch-and-shoot triple in the second. Best of all, his defensive engagement popped off the screen, sliding his feet to stay in front in 1-on-1 situations and staying attached to his assignment while fighting over screens.

"It's been a real focus point since I've been back," White said of his defensive activity. "We're so good defensively, I'm just trying to fit in."

White added six more points in the second half to finish with 20 points on sterling 9-for-11 shooting, 2-for-4 from 3-point range. That’s his highest scoring output and best overall performance of the season.

"We really have told him to be aggressive and be who he is as he learns how to play with all these guys," Donovan said. "The ball found him quite a bit on the perimeter, which is a good thing, where he can catch and shoot or catch and drive. Tonight the ball found him and the ball went in the basket."

White's thoughts on cracking 20 points for the first time this season?

"I don't really care, if I'm being honest," he said. "We're just trying to win the game. Whatever I can do to help my team win, whether it's score 20 or score zero."

4. Ball’s two-way brilliance was on display yet again. In the first half alone, he nabbed three steals, handed out four assists, and made three 3-pointers. His final tallies represented the ultimate Lonzo Ball stat line: 13 points, six dimes, five steals, four rebounds and 4-for-7 shooting, with all of his attempts coming from 3-point range. His defensive disruption created plenty of fastbreak chances, and his shooting and facilitating greased the team’s offensive wheels.

5. Two nights after shooting 6-for-19 against Houston, DeRozan looked on his way to another off performance early on. He scored six points in the first half, missing six of seven field goal attempts.

But he completely came alive in the third quarter, shooting 4-for-4 in the period’s first four-and-a-half minutes, including two 3-pointers (one of which turned to four due to a Jalen Suggs foul). By the 7:26 mark, he was tied with LaVine with a team-high 18 points, and ended the game ahead of LaVine’s 21 points with 23 of his own.

6. The third quarter doomed the Bulls in Houston, where the Rockets outscored them 35-18 and turned a nine-point halftime deficit into an eight-point lead entering the fourth. In Orlando, the Bulls won the third quarter 35-23 to expand a nine-point halftime lead to 21 entering the fourth, giving way to an eventual 35-point victory.

7. The Bulls shot 6-for-11 from 3-point range in that third quarter en route to a 17-for-34 night. It was a sublime, palate-cleansing offensive performance, which featured five players in double-figures (with DeRozan, LaVine and White all clearing 20 points), 32 assists and 55.8 percent shooting overall. Defensively, too, their identity returned in the form of 11 steals and 22 points off turnovers.

8. In a relative rarity, the Bulls won the bench points battle 45-27, but the reserves’ impact went beyond scoring. Alex Caruso, in particular, continued to crusade defensively, collecting four steals and finishing play with an eye-popping +38 plus-minus, just a hair short of White’s +39 for the team high.

Derrick Jones Jr., it must be noted, did foul out in just 10 minutes of game action. While a rare feat, he fell seven minutes short of the NBA record for fastest foul-out, which belongs to Bubba Wells of the Mavericks. Wells fouled out in 2 minutes, 43 seconds in a December 1997 defeat to the Bulls while playing hack-a-Dennis-Rodman.

9. Wendell Carter Jr. scored the Magic’s first points of the night with a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer, and entered the first stoppage of the game (after six minutes) with eight points, three rebounds and a block on 2-for-2 long-range shooting. At halftime, he led all scorers with 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting. Then he opened the third quarter with consecutive alley-oop finishes.

By night’s end, Carter had a substantial double-double of 26 points (game-high), 10 rebounds, two assists and two blocks, shooting 8-for-15 from the field, 2-for-6 from deep and 8-for-10 from the charity stripe. The confidence he’s gained since the trade that shipped him from Chicago to Orlando is evident.

10. Of the Bulls’ featured four starters (Ball, LaVine, DeRozan and Vučević), only Ball played more than 30 minutes. Caruso and White checked in at 25 and 24, respectively. And they all received extended rest in the fourth quarter, a beneficial luxury ahead of Saturday’s marquee matchup with the Heat at the United Center. That will mark the Bulls’ fifth game of the week, and the second night of a back-to-back, while Miami hasn’t played since Wednesday.

THE surging Atlanta Hawks pursue their seventh consecutive win on Friday (Saturday in Manila) when they visit the Memphis Grizzlies.

Atlanta won its sixth straight on Wednesday (Thursday), beating San Antonio, 124-106, behind Trae Young's 31 points. Young was one of eight Hawks to score in double figures in the win.

"The whole bench was engaged the whole time, whether it was the starters in or the second unit in," Young said in his postgame press conference. "We were just all engaged and we all wanted to win. The main focus coming in tonight was just breaking that streak of losing on the road."

In addition to extending the Hawks' current winning streak, Wednesday's result marked their first road win since beating New Orleans on October 27. Atlanta dropped its previous seven straight away from home.

The Hawks now seek their first consecutive road wins since Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals last season at Philadelphia and Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals at Milwaukee.

Balanced scoring has powered Atlanta during this run. Young has back-to-back 30-point-plus games and jump-started the winning streak with 42 points in an Eastern Conference Finals rematch with Milwaukee on November 14.

The Hawks as a team have run off three straight with at least six players in total scoring in double figures and had four scorers each hit for at least 20 points in the November 15 defeat of Orlando.

Cam Reddish has provided offensive punch off the bench, scoring 57 combined points in the last four games. At 11.8 points per game, he is one of six Hawks averaging in double figures for the season along with team-leading Young (25.3), John Collins (16.6), Bogdan Bogdanovic (12.3), Clint Capela (11.3) and De'Andre Hunter (10.8).

Hunter has been out throughout the winning streak due to wrist surgery and will not return for at least eight weeks.

VALORANT Champions 2021 Skin Bundle Revealed - DualShockers

VALORANT Champions 2021 skin bundle revealed - Dot Esports

VALORANT fans will have the chance to celebrate the first VALORANT Champions event with the VCT Champions limited-edition bundle.

VALORANT YouTuber HITSCAN revealed the new VCT Champions 2021 skin bundle earlier today. The bundle includes a Vandal skin, karambit melee, and a few other bonuses for purchasing the bundle.

Both weapon skins have a black, gold, and red color scheme. The Vandal also has the Champions logo on its side. Both weapons have an upgrade option called the Champions Aura, which adds a special glowing effect. This effect only activates if you’re the top fragger on your team and can be activated if the top fragger on your team picks the weapon up.

The karambit melee isn’t the first of its kind to appear in VALORANT, but it does have new special animations while equipped. The Vandal’s muzzle flash can also be upgraded to look like the VCT Champions logo and inspecting the gun causes a snippet of the recently revealed VALORANT Champs anthem to play as the Champions logo pulsates.

The bundle also introduces an incredible finisher that plays a part of the anthem as a golden logo appears over the body. But players can walk into the finisher to trigger a second animation, which is a giant Brimstone appearing above the map in a red sky. This is a reference to a scene in the anthem music video and is an incredible detail. The Vandal has four upgradable levels, so save your Radiante points if you want to use this new finisher.

In addition, the bundle includes three player cards inspired by Phoenix, Sage, and Brimstone in the anthem music video. Fans who don’t want to spend money can enjoy a free VALORANT Champs card that will be released today. Players can also get the VCT 2021 Sparks spray by watching the group stage of the VCT Champs event. Your account must be connected to a supported streaming platform and the spray will only be available from Dec. 1 to 11. The cosmetic has four possible variants that change colors based on where you spray. But the gold variant has a one percent chance of dropping, so be patient.

Players who tune in to the VCT Champs grand finals can unlock the VCT 2021 Spark buddy on Dec. 12.

The Champions bundle costs 6,264 VP and will be available from Nov. 24 to Dec. 12. Half of the proceeds will go to teams participating in the event, while the other half goes to Riot. Players can’t purchase individual items in the bundle and must pay the full price to unlock all of the skins.

PH bowling team to train abroad to prepare for SEAG - The Manila Times

THE Philippine Bowling Federation (PBF) is looking to send the Philippine national bowling team abroad to train for the Vietnam Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in May 2022.

"I would like to send the team somewhere if it's going to be hard for us to train here," said PBF secretary general and Philippine bowling legend Bong Coo at the Philippine Sportswriters Association online forum on Tuesday.

"I hope we will get the budget for it. It's better for them to train abroad and be exposed to tournaments abroad."

Coo said that it is unlikely that there will be local tournaments in the first half of 2022 as the country continues to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.

That being said, the four-time world champion bowler looks to send the national team, which bagged two bronze medals in the 2021 International Bowling Federation Super World Championships in Dubai which ended the Philippine bowling's 15-year medal drought, to Europe or the United States for training.

"I don't think for the next six months in 2022 there will be local tournaments here where they can join. I need to find tournaments for them in Europe. From what I heard, there will be a European tour in January," she said.

"Like Singapore and Malaysia, they join the pro tournament for women in America. That's why they're so good because their training is continuous."

Still, everything depends on whether or not the PBF will have a budget for it, she said.

"If we have little budget, maybe I can send some members of the team to Europe or US for training so they can be exposed in the competition and have their mental toughness exposed before the Southeast Asian Games," said Coo.

Patafa rejects Obiena's claim of 'character assassination' - Manila Bulletin

EJ Obiena (AFP)

The Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) rejected Olympian EJ Obiena’s claim of “character assassination,” stressing the investigation conducted by the Board was internal and not for public consumption.

In a statement, Patafa said it only acted on a testimony signed by Obiena’s Ukrainian coach Vitaly Petrov, who informed the association that he did not receive payments for his services to Obiena.

A signed affidavit of pole vault legend Sergey Bubka, president of the Ukraine Olympic Committee and senior vice president of world athletics, backed Petrov’s earlier claim.

Patafa also said records revealed that Obiena, 26, had settled obligations with Petrov only this month, and not during the months that he had officially reported to have paid his coach’s salary.

The association is bent on asking Obiena if he had paid Petrov on time. In various liquidation reports Obiena submitted to the association, he claimed he had turned over Petrov’s salary from May 2018 to August 2021 on time.

Patafa said the discrepancy in Obiena’s reports and the documents from Petrov and Bubka inquiring about the coach’s salary have prompted the association to investigate the matter.

Upon initial investigation, the track body demanded Obiena to return the 85,000 euro (around P4.8 million) worth of coaching fees.

In Sunday’s online press briefing, Obiena denied such signed affidavits from several people including Petrov exist. However, alleged copies of the affidavit from Bubka started leaking on social media platforms.

Obiena said the issue has tarnished his reputation and affected his training in Formia, Italy.

The Tokyo Olympian who is ranked No. 5 in the world has demanded a full apology from Patafa and the withdrawal of the investigation.

If the probe continues, Obiena, who finished 11th in the Tokyo Games, warned he would retire from the sport he loves the most.

Gab Banal goes to TNT after declining Alaska extension - Manila Bulletin

Photo from PBA

TNT made a significant move for the first time since winning the PBA Philippine Cup with the addition of former Alaska forward Gab Banal.

Team manager Gabby Cui confirmed late Sunday, Nov. 21 that the Tropang Giga had signed Banal, who declined the Aces’ offer of a one-conference extension following a solid showing in the All-Filipino tournament.

No further details were revealed, but the deal allowed TNT to add another significant piece to its title-winning roster in the 6-foot-3 Banal.

Banal is expected to be a key asset for TNT, which captured the first conference crown after needing five games to defeat Magnolia Pambansang Manok in the championship series.

Having a solid player like Banal is something the Tropang Giga will take, especially after Barangay Ginebra and San Miguel Beer bolstered their lineups through trades.

The 31-year-old was signed by Alaska last February after emerging as one of the best players outside of the PBA.

Prior to joining the Aces, Banal had a forgotten PBA stint with the GlobalPort Batang Pier before building a name for himself as a star in the D-League, MPBL and the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3×3.

He made a solid impression during the conference, playing all 11 games for the Aces and averaged 8.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists.

Banal scored a conference-high 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting in Alaska’s 89-80 loss to Meralco on July 31 at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Alaska finished 11th in the eliminations with a 3-8 record, ending a streak of seven consecutive quarterfinal appearances.

It was also the Aces’ worst record since posting a similar win-loss tally in the 2017 Governors’ Cup.

Results and highlights: Terence Crawford stops Shawn Porter in 10th rd - Bad Left Hook

Terence Crawford definitely got his toughest test from Shawn Porter, but in the end, it was the same sort of result, with Crawford stopping Porter in the 10th round to retain his WBO welterweight title.

Crawford (38-0, 29 KO) definitely got his “big win” as a welterweight in this one, and put to bed any lingering doubt that he may not be a true top 147 lb fighter. Porter (31-4-1, 17 KO) gave it his usual excellent effort and was in the fight, but was dropped two times in the 10th round, leading his father Kenny Porter — also his trainer — to stop the bout.

Before that, it had been back-and-forth to a degree. Bad Left Hook’s unofficial cards had Crawford up 87-84 (my card) and 86-85 after nine rounds, and then he really stepped on the gas and put things away.

Porter did not seem to agree with the stoppage when his father made the call, but was very congratulatory toward Crawford and his team when all was said and done.

“He’s doing what he knows he needs to do. I didn’t expect that. We’ve never had a conversation about that, we just kind of always had a silent understanding, but I didn’t expect it,” Porter said. “He was catching me too clean and that’s what my dad saw. I saw it, I felt it. My timing was a little off. A great fighter over there wouldn’t allow me to catch my rhythm. That was my game plan, not to allow him to catch his. He’s a dynamite dude in and out of the ring. Congratulations.”

Asked if Crawford was the best fighter he’s faced to date, Porter didn’t quite say that, but gave Crawford his respect.

“There’s no doubt that man hit me more than anybody I’ve been in the ring with,” he told Bernardo Osuna. “He was on point, A through Z. The competitor in me won’t stop looking at him wanting to fight him again, and he’s that good that I want to do it again. He’s got it. I said that multiple times. He just has that.”

Kenny Porter was booed pretty hard for his explanation as to why he stopped the fight.

“He didn’t prepare like I wanted him to prepare, and that makes me say, ‘I don’t want him in that situation,’” Kenny said. “He fought a great fighter, the guy’s super sharp, and he’s at a deficit. It’s like fighting this guy blindfolded when you’re at a deficit like that. I wasn’t going to let that happen to him.”

Crawford shared the respect for Porter after the bout.

“Shawn Porter, like I said before, I can’t say nothing bad about him. He’s been in there with everybody, he did what I could, I was just the better man today,” he said. “I figured him out in round one. I had the reach, he had to take chances to get in. I was a little stronger than him. He was just trying to do what he normally does — maul, push me back, but I used my angles and pushed him back at times as well.

“Shawn Porter is a good fighter. He was doing some little slick things in there, making me think. I knew I caught him with a good uppercut, and then when I caught him with another left hook, I saw on his face he was real hurt. His dad did the right thing by stopping it, because I was coming with a vengeance.”

Told that Errol Spence Jr was at the fight — and left at the finish of the bout — Crawford laughed it off.

“He was at my fight? That boy said he wasn’t gonna never be at my fights, and now he’s at my fights. You see what I did compared to what he did,” he said. “Who’s number one in the welterweight division now? I’ve been calling him out all day. Maybe I’ll go up to 154. Maybe if Spence gets his tail out of his butt, he’ll fight me.”

Crawford did pull it back some and gave a sincere answer about the situation. “Look, styles make fights. We’re all great, we’re all talented. We’ve all got different styles. He won, I won. I just look at it like no matter how the end comes, as long as you get the victory, that’s all that matters.”

Tatum Rises Up Against Loaded Lakers, Leads C’s to Dominant Win - Celtics.com

Presented by Socios.com

BOSTON – While playing against six potential future Hall-of-Famers Friday night, Jayson Tatum was far and away the most dominant player on the court.

And the most dominant player on the court led his Boston Celtics to an authoritative, 130-108 win over their archrival Los Angeles Lakers inside TD Garden.

With game-highs in points (37), rebounds (11), and steals (three), Tatum was no match for the likes of LeBron James (23 points, six rebounds), Anthony Davis (31 points, six rebounds), Russell Westbrook (12 points six assists), Carmelo Anthony (13 points, four rebounds), Dwight Howard (seven points, four rebounds), or Rajon Rondo (zero points, two assists).

To stand above such talent, while leading his team to a commanding victory, felt pretty damn good, especially after climbing out of a 14-point hole in the first quarter.

“We just regrouped,” Tatum said of himself and his teammates, who outscored LA 112-76 in the final 27 minutes of action. “Giving up 38 points in the first quarter is something that we never want to do but it’s basketball and things happen, so you can’t control everything. But how you respond kinda just shows your character.”

Tatum showcased his character by rising to the occasion against top-notch talent like he so often does.

Playing against the best players in the league tends to bring out the best player in Jayson Tatum, as this wasn’t the first time he stepped up against James and the Lakers, and surely won’t be his last.

That’s because he has the confidence to not only feel as though he can compete among elite talent, but to also feel as though he is the most elite talent whenever he steps on the floor.

Tatum began to form such belief in himself two seasons ago when he was selected to his first All-Star team at the age of 21.

“When I made my first All-Star game and I was in the locker room with LeBron, KD (Kevin Durant), (James) Harden, Kawhi (Leonard), I think that was the first time in my career that I felt like I belonged in the room,” Tatum said. “Obviously those guys have accomplished so much more and have played longer and things like that, but I was in the locker room with them, I was on that team. And I think ever since then, I’ve taken that approach of, I belong in that locker room from now on.

“Whether anybody else believes it, I always tell myself when I get on the floor that I’m the best player.”

It’s one thing to think that way, but Tatum backed up those words by also playing that way.

After scoring just three points in the first quarter and watching the Lakers get off to a 38-30 start, Tatum shifted into another gear. He went on to score 34 points in the final three quarters, during which Davis and James scored only 30 combined. However, the 6-foot-9 wing didn't do it alone, as he got some help from Marcus Smart (season-high 22 points), Dennis Schroder (21 points), Al Horford (18 points), and Josh Richardson (15 points).

For Tatum, the coolest part of the night was getting to put on a show right in front of two Celtics Legends in Paul Pierce and Bill Russell, who traveled across the country to sit courtside for the marquee matchup.

“It’s a surreal moment,” Tatum said of playing in front of the pair of Hall-of-Famers. “Obviously, Bill Russell, I know the impact that he had on the Celtics and the NBA. I didn’t get to see him play, but having somebody like Paul come to the game, it’s someone I have a relationship with. I mean, I remember watching him play and now he’s watching me play. That’s crazy to me.”

Though, it’s not as crazy as a 23-year-old dominating a gym full of future Hall-of-Famers.

Tatum did just that on Friday night, solidifying the fact that he’s known for the past two years: that he belongs among the upper echelon of NBA players, and he can outplay any one of them – or all of them, for that matter – on any given night.

Stallion-Laguna takes third place after beating Dynamic Herb Cebu in shootout

Photo from PFF

Stallion-Laguna salvaged third place in the Copa Paulino Alcantara with a 5-4 win over Dynamic Herb Cebu in a penalty shootout that came after regulation ended scoreless at the PFF National Training Centre in Carmona, Cavite.

Goalkeeper Kenneth John James made the only save of the shootout before Finn McDaniel barely converted the clinching goal as Stallion secured a podium finish at the conclusion of the two-week competition.

It was a good way to end the campaign for Stallion, which lost 2-1 to the Azkals Developmental Team in the semifinals despite scoring the opening goal in the second half.

Cebu finished fourth after making an impression with its physical play and uptempo style during the club’s three-game stint in the Copa.

Stallion beat Cebu for the second straight time, but had to go through a shootout in order to pull it off.

Both clubs each converted their first three attempts, until James saved the attempt of Cebu striker Roberto Corsame Jr.

Laguna’s Jo Warren Bedia and Cebu’s Joaco Canas converted for their sides before McDaniel atoned for his missed attempt in extra time of the semifinal.

McDaniel’s shot hit the crossbar but bounced past the goal line to hand Stallion the consolation prize.
