PBA opens 3x3 action | Josef Ramos - Business Mirror

THE Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) kicks off its first-ever 3X3 tournament on Saturday with all 13 teams playing in the first leg at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Limitless Appmaster of Phoenix Super LPG composed of Filipino-American Brandon Rosser, Mike Gamboa, Jorey Napoles and Reymar Caduyac battles Purefoods TJ Titans of Paolo Javelona, Jed Mendoza, Val Acuna, Antonio Bonsubre and Joseph Eriobu at 2 p.m. in Pool A.

Forty-year-old Mac Cardona will be returning to the PBA as part of the Zamboanga Valientes, who will play against Platinum Karaoke of JR Alabanza, Yutien Andrada, Chris De Chavez and Karl Dehesa at 2:25 p.m. also in Pool A.

“I am very excited to play 3X3 and show what I have as a player. The PBA is my family. Although I don’t expect too much, I am hoping and praying this 3X3 will help me to return to the PBA’s regular 5-on-5,” Cardona told BusinessMirror on Friday.

Cardona, a former De La Salle gunner, will be teaming up with Al-Daser Esa, Gino Jumao-as, Kyle Neypes, JR Cawaling and Reynaldo Demesa under Coach Joseph Aaron Romarate.

A total of 17 games will be played in the first day starting 2 p.m. until 8:40 p.m.

The other games pit Barangay Ginebra San Miguel against Sista Super Sealers at 2:50 p.m. in Pool B and Cavitex Braves-Pioneer Pro Tibay at 3:15 p.m. in Pool C.

TNT Tropang Giga meets Limitless Appmaster at 3:40 p.m., while Purefoods TJ Giants clash with Zamboanga Valientes at 4:05 p.m. Terrafirma and Ginebra collide at 4:30 p.m. and NorthPort faces Pioneer at 4:55 p.m.

Platinum and limitless Appmaster collide at 5:20 p.m., Purefoods and TNT square off at 5:45 p.m., Meralco battles Sista at 6:10 p.m. and the Beermen take on the Batang Pier at 6:35 p.m.

Limitless App takes on Zamboanga Valientes at 7 p.m., to be followed by the Platinum-Purefoods game at 7:25 p.m., Cavitex-San Miguel Beer at 7:50 p.m., Terrafirma-Meralco at 8:15 p.m., and TNT-Zamboanga Valientes at 8:40 p.m.

All the remaining elimination games will be completed by Sunday, including the knockout stages—quarterfinals, semifinals and championship—starting at 3 p.m. The winner-take-all final is set at 6:40 p.m.

The game is played for a period of 10 minutes, with the first team to score 21 points winning the match.

The top 3 teams in Pool A (five teams) and top 2 teams in Pools B (four teams) and C (four teams) will advance to the playoffs, while the eighth and final berth will be disputed by the third best team in Pool B and C, respectively, in a do-or-die match.

The champion will receive P100,000, runner-up P50,000, and third place P30,000.
