James Harden ties Larry Bird with 59th career triple-double - NBA.com

James Harden posts 18 points, 12 assists & 10 rebounds in Nets' win.

James Harden notched his 59th career triple-double against the Detroit Pistons on Sunday, tying Larry Bird for seventh-most all time.

In just three quarters, the Nets star posted 18 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists as Brooklyn took a 22-point lead entering the final period. Recently named to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team, Harden knocked down 4-of-7 3-point attempts, with his lethal stepback on full display.

“It’s getting there. I’m starting to feel real, real good,” said Harden after his balanced attack in the Nets’ 117-91 victory.

James Harden talks about finding his groove after recording his first triple-double of the season vs. Detroit.

In addition to Harden’s dominant performance, the Nets were extremely efficient on the offensive end, shooting a franchise record 65.3% from the field. Brooklyn’s previous record (65.2%) was set nearly 40 years ago on April 17, 1982 at Detroit.

Sultan survives knockdown, knocks Caraballo four times to win WBO IC title - Tiebreaker Times

In the biggest bout of his young career, Jonas Sultan proved that he belonged.

Sultan showed grit and determination, dealing Puerto Rican Carlos Caraballo his first loss in a unanimous decision (94-93×3) win to win the vacant World Boxing Organization Intercontinental Bantamweight title, Sunday morning (Manila time) at the Hulu Theater of the Madison Square Garden in New York City.

And the bout itself was an instant classic.

“This is boxing, this is a war,” said Sultan, who raised his slate to 18-5 with 11 knockouts.

“And I came to win tonight.”

Caraballo, who had been unbeaten in his first 14 fights, was stunned by Sultan in the second round after a bevy of shots capped by an uppercut floored him.

Sensing blood, Sultan again dropped Caraballo in the next round. Caraballo though was able to recover and even give Sultan a scare.

“Caraballo is a tough man, but I wanted this one,” said Sultan.

After absorbing punishment in the fourth and fifth rounds, Sultan found wind, snicking a counter right that once again knocked down Caraballo.

A combination left hook in the ninth round was followed by a stinging jab and uppercut that resulted in Sultan’s fourth knockdown of the bout and, in the end, proved pivotal in the razor-close affair.

Sultan landed 85-of-302 punches while Caraballo got 95 of his 213 attempts to connect.

Kiefer's Shiga, Thirdy's San-En prevail in Emperor's Cup - Manila Bulletin

Photo from Emperor’s Cup

Four Filipino players and their teams extended their campaign following victories Sunday, Oct. 31 in the All-Japan Basketball Championship in Hokkaido, Tachikawa and Kishiwada.

Thirdy Ravena and the San-En Neophoenix posted a 90-76 win over the Koshigaya Alphas while older brother Kiefer and the Shiga Lakestars registered a 91-82 victory at the expense of the Fukuoka Rising Zephyrs.

Dwight Ramos and the Toyama Grouses overcame the Shimane Susanoo Magic, 81-77, while Aquino hardly saw action in the Shinshu Brave Warriors triumph against Ray Parks Jr. and the Nagoya Diamond Dolphins, 90-80.

The Ibaraki Robots also prevailed, 86-74, opposite the Fighting Eagles Nagoya but Javi Gomez de Liano has yet to see action for his B.League club.

Kobe Paras and Niigata Albirex’s stint in the tournament also known as the Emperor’s Cup came to an end after a heartbreaking 105-102 overtime loss to the Hiroshima Dragonflies.

Their clubs will once again play Monday, Nov. 1 with Thirdy’s Neophoenix facing the Hiroshima Dragonflies and Kiefer’s Lakestars battling the winner of the match between Alvark Tokyo and Altiri Chiba.

Thirdy had 15 points, three rebounds and five assists for the Neophoenix even as Kiefer produced 12 points and nine assists in the Lakestars’ triumph.

Ramos was held to three points, three assists, one steals and two blocks but the Grouses were able to hold off the Magic to reach the first round of the tournament.

Aquino played just one minute for the Brave Warriors to beat the Diamond Dolphins.

Parks scored just two points with two assists and three steals in 24 minutes.

Paras delivered 21 points, including a tip-in to tie the score at 102-all late in the extra session.

But hopes of another five-minute period was squashed by Hiroshima when Ryo Terashima converted a buzzer-beating three off a friendly bounce to end Niigata’s stint in Japan’s domestic cup tourney.

"I'm really not worried about Stephen Curry's scoring!": Steve Kerr gives a nonchalant response to questions... - The Sportsrush

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr gives an interesting answer on Stephen Curry going scoreless in the 4th quarter so far this season

We all know Stephen Curry is the epitome of greatness in basketball, and a future hall of famer already. But, despite all that, there are things that are a tad bit worrying about the player, this season.

Sure, the man is averaging 30.4 points a game at the moment, which is among the best in the league. But, his scoring in the fourth quarter during this year, has been very, very suspect.

So far, the Chef had not scored a single point during the final 12 minutes of the last 3 regular-season games. And that went up to 4 as he sat out the 4th quarter completely against the OKC Thunder.

After the game, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr was asked if he was concerned about this trend of Steph’s. And in response, let’s just say he echoed what every Warriors fan is likely thinking right now.

Steve Kerr isn’t worried about Stephen Curry’s scoreless 4th quarters

And honestly, we don’t really blame him for it.

At the end of the day, this is Stephen Curry. He is easily one of the best scorers in the NBA right now, something that Kerr was sure to highlight in his answer. Take a look at the tweet below to see what he said.

Honestly, that seems about right.

Just last season, this man was doing absolutely everything for the Warriors, and he did it damn well. So frankly, much like Steve Kerr, we believe this is nothing more than a fluky stretch of sorts. And we’re sure that the Chef will break this streak soon enough.

Utah Jazz: 3 crazy stats from the 2021-22 season so far - The J Notes

Utah Jazz

Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert (Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports)

Early into this 2021-22 NBA season, Utah Jazz fans are mostly concerned with one stat: win/loss totals. Their Jazzmen are 4-0, and if you love the team, you probably aren’t concerned with how they’ve gotten there.

That’s entirely fair, however, there have been some statistical markers from the Jazz’s undefeated start that are quite interesting. As the three-point revolution’s new vanguard, the Utah Jazz are bound to set some historic precedents. This club’s fans are truly witnessing history.

Here are 3 statistics from the 2021-22 season to date that reinforce that fact.

1. Utah Jazz True Shooting % (TS%)

As we’ve discussed recently at the J-Notes, the Jazz haven’t actually been shooting the three ball very efficiently in spite of the team’s tremendous volume. Several key members of the team have been enduring shooting slumps to begin the 2021-22 NBA season.

Those slumps are reflected in the Jazz’s 19th ranked 33.3% accuracy from three-point range. For contrast’s sake, the Chicago Bulls are leading the Association in three-point accuracy at 40.4%.

The shots may not be falling, but the Utah Jazz are hoisting them without reservation. Their 43.5 attempts per contest are the most in the NBA. Intuitively, one may question the validity of this strategy. If the Jazz are hitting their threes with the 19th best conversion rate in the NBA, could it be advisable to shoot the most threes?

As it turns out, it is very much so.

In spite of the Jazzmen’s shooting woes, they’ve got the second best TS% in the NBA at 58.6%, trailing only the Philadelphia 76ers (59.5%). For those who don’t know, TS% is a shooting percentage that aggregates field goal percentage, three-point percentage and free throw percentage.

The fact that the Utah Jazz could routinely miss so many triples and still rank second in the NBA in TS% validates the entire three-point revolution. It demonstrates that shooting more three-pointers makes an offense more efficient, even if those attempts aren’t consistently dropping.

The Utah Jazz are already undefeated: once those threes start finding nylon more consistently, they’ll pose a major problem to any team in the NBA. As it stands, they still boast one of the most efficient offenses in the NBA in spite of rostering several slumping three-point threats.

Manila Chooks suffers early exit in Abu Dhabi Masters

Photo from FIBA 3×3

Manila Chooks TM suffered twin defeats Friday, Oct. 29 to absorb an early exit in the FIBA 3×3 World Tour Abu Dhabi Masters at the Kasr Al Amwaj in the United Arab Emirates.

The team of Mac Tallo, Mark Yee, Chico Lanete and Zach Huang fell to world No. 4 Liman, 21-11, before losing to fifth-ranked Amsterdam, 22-8, to finish 11th in the 14-team field.

An injury suffered by former Lyceum standout Mike Nzeusseu before the start of the tournament had a big effect on Manila, which is playing its third World Tour since Aldin Ayo took over as head trainer.

Ayo said the team will be re-evaluated in preparation for the 2022 edition of FIBA’s annual 3×3 competition.

“Of course, we’re disappointed,” Ayo said. “Even if we did not have Mike, it’s no excuse for the performance that we had.

“We are looking to reassess our lineup for the 2022 pro circuit,” added Ayo.

Tallo once again emerged as Manila’s best player despite its struggles, posting eight points against Liman though he only had six in the lopsided defeat to Amsterdam.

Serbian-based Liman raced to a 9-3 lead and made sure Manila won’t make a big rally despite a couple of two-pointers from Tallo to seal the win with 1:51 left in the game on Stefan Kojic’s basket.

Amsterdam would then take its turn in pounding Manila as it took a 13-4 lead and never looked back. The Dutch side completed the win with less than a minute to spare.

TNT breaks stranglehold of SMC dominance in PBA - The Manila Times

Players, coaches and staff of Talk ’N Text celebrate after winning the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup on Friday night, Oct. 29, 2021, in Bacolor, Pampanga. PBA PHOTO

NOT only did Talk 'N Text end its six-year title drought, but the team also snapped the stranglehold of San Miguel teams' dominance in the Philippine Basketball Association.

Prior to winning the Philippine Cup on Friday night by closing out their best-of-seven finals series against the Magnolia Hotshots with a masterful 94-79 victory in Game 5, the Tropang Giga were staring at the list of champions in the league over the past 11 conferences.

No team outside of the SMC squads had won a tournament. In the past five Philippine Cup tournaments, San Miguel Beer dominated by winning four straight seasons before its reign was ended last year by Barangay Ginebra, which defeated TNT, then being handled by active consultant Mark Dickel, in five games. The Gin Kings won in five import-laden conferences while the Hotshots sneaked in and grabbed a title in the 2018 Governors' Cup.

Chot Reyes and the rejuvenated Tropang Giga were able to break that monopoly, and with the present composition of the team, which features a balance of young stars and veteran players, scorers and defenders and players who are willing to do the dirty job, this team presents a new era in the PBA.

The biggest acquisition is definitely Mikey Williams.

TNT had its share of great guards through the years, back at the time when Jimmy Alapag was quarterbacking for the team.

A long-time team captain of the squad, Alapag was a former Rookie of the Year, became an MVP and on top of that, became a key figure in TNT's six championship runs.

When Alapag retired, he passed the baton of leadership to Jayson Castro, another great point guard, who likewise became the best point guard in Asia while playing for Gilas Pilipinas.

As the new floor leader of the franchise, Castro was able to become a member of TNT's seven championship teams, the most among the players in the squad. Now 35, Castro is about to wind down his basketball career, and it's only fitting that TNT brought in his heir apparent in the rookie Williams.

Immediately, Williams let his game speak for himself.

He was a key figure in the squad all conference long but preserved the best for last.

His finals averages were nothing but spectacular: 27.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.8 assists and six triples a game. It's not surprising he was the runaway winner for the Finals MVP and became the first rookie since Danny Seigle to accomplish the feat. The Tropang Giga also have key players who've made key contributions all conference long — the young stars led by Roger Pogoy, Troy Rosario and Poy Erram, all of them becoming a PBA champion for the first time.

Of course, aside from Castro, the other old reliable players also made huge contributions — Ryan Reyes and Kelly Williams.

These players would certainly savor this moment as they won't be long enough with the squad. They're enjoying it while it lasts. This is a new era for the Tropang Giga and after six years of title drought, they were able to stamp their mark back on top and affirmed their status back as among the elite PBA squads.

Lakers Injury Report: Wayne Ellington has been cleared for activity - Silver Screen and Roll

The Lakers still have a ways to go before they start getting significant injury reinforcements. Kendrick Nunn won’t even get the bone bruise in his knee reevaluated for another 1-2 weeks, Trevor Ariza still has nearly five weeks before his own reevaluation following training camp ankle surgery, and Talen Horton-Tucker won’t get reevaluated from his own preseason thumb surgery for around two more weeks.

All of those reassessments aren’t even guaranteed to result in an immediate return, either. They may just lead to another timeline being given out by the team.

But in better news, one name that has been on the injury report since training camp could be returning fairly soon, maybe as soon as the Lakers’ next practice. Wayne Ellington has missed the entire regular season so far — as well as their final two preseason games — with a Grade 1 hamstring strain, but Vogel said on Friday that Ellington has been “cleared for activity,” and that the team just wants him to participate in a practice before putting him into a game.

“We’d like to get him in a couple of our practices before we throw him into a game. Not sure when that’s going to happen, but I don’t plan on using him tonight,” Vogel said at shootaround before the teams win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

To illustrate Vogel’s point, the team is not practicing on Saturday, and does not have two days between games — usually a necessity for a practice with a veteran team like this — until Dec. 1 and 2. That’s not to say the Lakers won’t practice until then, it’s just also easy to see why Vogel isn’t sure when they’ll squeeze one in.

The Lakers have had Ellington active and dressed for the last three games as an emergency injury reinforcement, however, lending further credence to the idea that he is getting very, very close to a return. And with whispers in the offseason that Ellington was expected to get consideration as the team’s starting shooting guard, he just may play a significant role in the rotation when he does get back, if he hasn’t already lost that chance to some hot starts from Avery Bradley, undrafted rookie Austin Reaves and injury-replacement starter and certified bench microwave Malik Monk.

But either way, Ellington will give this Lakers team one more healthy body, and a hell of a shooter. Even if he’s not in the rotation right away, he does give the Lakers a potentially dynamic option to turn to on a night when other guys don’t have it going. And for a team dealing with these kind of injury issues so early in the year, options are never a bad thing.

MrBeast And Mark Rober’s #TeamSeas Is Raising $30 Million For Ocean Cleanup - Tubefilter

Two years ago, MrBeast and Mark Rober’s ambitious #TeamTrees initiative raised more than $20 million to help the Arbor Day Foundation plant 20 million trees around the world.

In just 55 days, the effort attracted attention and donations from dozens of public figures, including Elon Musk (who gave $1 million), Twitter cofounder/CEO Jack Dorsey ($350,000), YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki ($200,000), Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke ($1,000,001) and CTO Jean-Michel Lemieux ($100,100), Salesforce cofounder/CEO Marc Benioff ($900,000), and GitHub developer Scott Chacon ($250,001).

Now the #TeamTrees team is back–with an even loftier goal.

In his latest upload, MrBeast (aka Jimmy Donaldson) unveiled #TeamSeas, a YouTube Originals-backed fundraiser aiming to bring in $30 million to clear 30 million pounds of trash from oceans, rivers, and beaches.

Like they did with #TeamTrees, Donaldson (who has 72.5 million subscribers on YouTube) and Rober (20 million) have partnered with environmental organizations to pull off their philanthropic feat.

Half of the money raised will go to the Washington, D.C.-based Ocean Conservancy. Thanks to nearly 17 million volunteers working with its International Coastal Cleanup program, the Conservancy has removed more than 341 million pounds of trash from oceans and beaches since 1986. #TeamSeas funds will go toward the Conservancy’s cleanups, Donaldson says.

The other 50% of funds will go to The Ocean Cleanup, a Netherlands-based, engineering-focused nonprofit that develops hi-tech solutions to waterway pollution.

Donaldson indicates that funds given to The Ocean Cleanup will support the Interceptor, a giant, solar-powered robot that trawls rivers and removes trash. The Ocean Cleanup says that 80% of plastic in the world’s oceans flows into them from rivers, and the Interceptor is “capable of operating in the majority of the world’s most polluting rivers.”

The organization’s goal is to have Interceptors deployed in 1,000 heavily polluted rivers within five years, it says.

Between the two nonprofits, every $1 donated to #TeamSeas will equal one pound of trash removed from oceans and beaches, Donaldson says.

At press time, around two hours after #TeamSeas’ debut, more than $1.5 million has been donated through the initiative’s YouTube Giving fundraiser.

YouTube Originals has pledged to contribute $400,000 to #TeamSeas.

Folks interested in donating can do so on YouTube or on #TeamSeas’ official website.

"I feel like I could've played better" - Bam Adebayo after his brilliant 26-point performance in Miami Heat's win over the Charlotte Hornets - Sportskeeda

Bam Adebayo feels he could performed better in his stunning performance against the Charlotte Hornets on Friday night. The Miami Heat center posted 26 points and secured 19 rebounds to help his team to a dominant 114-99 win over the in-form Hornets.

Adebayo's brilliant performance on the defensive and offensive board made things extremely difficult for the opposition. Despite putting up a complete effort for the team, the player said that there was still room for improvement in his performance. Speaking about the same in his post-game interview, Bam Adebayo said:

"I feel like I could've played better. But it's a great win at the end of the day. The team really picked it up; I feel at the end of the half, we lost our intensity. But we picked it up throughout the end of the rest of the second half."

It was a special night for Adebayo, as his Olympic banner was up in the rafters. The youngster was a key part of the Team USA team that won the gold medal in the Tokyo Summer Olympics this summer.

In the process,he joined an elite list of Heat stars like LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Alonzo Mourning to have their Olympic banners in the rafters at the FTX Arena. When asked about how he felt when his name went up in the rafters with Heat legends, Adebayo said:

"Special moment, especially where we come from, you know like I said in the video, you don't get a lot of other big gold medalists where I come from. So, I am glad to represent my city, I am glad to represent my home and this organisation."

Bab Adebayo stars in Miami Heat's dominant win over the Charlotte Hornets

Charlotte Hornets vs Miami Heat
Charlotte Hornets vs Miami Heat

The Miami Heat's win over the Charlotte Hornets was their third consecutive victory of the season. All three of their wins have been by over ten-point margins, and the Heat's performances in all three games have been phenomenal. Kyle Lowry's presence seems to have bolstered the squad, as the Heat have been 4-0 with him on the floor.

Jimmy Butler has put up some incredible scoring performances this season. He is averaging 25.0 PPG, 7.4 RPG and 5.2 APG while shooting at 51.1% from the field.

Meanwhile, Bam Adebayo has also been on top of his game since his return from the Tokyo Olympics. Adebayo has been excellent at the defensive end, and looks like a prime contender for the Defensive Player of the Year award this season.

Another Heat player that has stepped up this year is Tyler Herro. After a poor sophomore year, the youngster is out to silence his critics. He is currently averaging 22.0 PPG, and is shooting at 46.6% efficiency from the field. Herro has elevated his game, and is likely going to be a key part of the Miami Heat team this season.

The franchise recruited some big players like Kyle Lowry, PJ Tucker and Markieff Morris this offseason. They have all instantly gelled with the team, and are looking like a solid fit with the Heat. If things continue to work out well for them, there is no doubt the franchise will be one of the favorites to come out of the East.

Brooklyn Nets' James Harden breaks out with 16 free throws, 29 points in win - ESPN

NEW YORK -- James Harden was in his bag Friday night, dribbling, creating space, draining 3s and letting everyone know that he was starting to feel more like himself as he yelled out during a timeout while clenching his fists and flexing his arms.

Harden also was finally back at a place he knows well -- the free throw line. After going to the line a combined 15 times in his first five games, Harden went 16-for-19 from the stripe and scored a season-high 29 points to go with eight assists and eight rebounds to help the Nets take a 105-98 win over the Indiana Pacers at Barclays Center.

This was, by far, Harden's best game of the season after getting off to a slow start and averaging 16.6 points entering Friday.

"It wasn't 30, obviously," said Harden, who admitted on Wednesday that his body and game aren't quite at the point where he can score 30 or 40 points a night. "I keep saying it -- every single game, I feel good, I feel better today, I continue to work on off days and non-game days, and on game days continue to get to the basket and shoot my shots.

"Nothing's gonna change. Eventually things are gonna happen where it's consistent and I'm out there playing [like] myself."

Earlier this week, Nets coach Steve Nash said he thought Harden had unfairly become the "poster boy" for this season's rules changes, with officials cracking down on "overt, abrupt or abnormal non-basketball moves" of ball handlers looking to draw fouls.

Before Friday night's game, Harden had not gone to the line more than four times in a game this season. But against the Pacers, he went to the line nine times in the second quarter alone, when he scored 13 points.

This was the 72nd game in his career in which Harden made at least 15 free throws, the most in NBA history, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

"It was just me being aggressive," Harden said. "The first couple of games I wasn't aggressive. I was aggressive in spurts, but just trying to be aggressive for four quarters. I had that burst, that speed of getting to my spots, whether I was getting to the basket or shooting my shots. I felt pretty good out there for an entire game."

While Harden scored 21 points in the first half, Kevin Durant had 18 of his 22 points by halftime. Their 39 combined points were the most they have scored as Nets teammates in the first half.

The Nets, though, were fortunate to have Durant available in the fourth quarter. After play was stopped with a foul while Durant was driving, he fired the basketball into the stands with 4:40 remaining in the third quarter.

Crew chief Sean Wright told a pool reporter after the game that in real time, the official who made the call didn't think the ball entered the stands with force.

"After seeing the video postgame, we did see that the ball did go into the stands with force," Wright said. "And Kevin Durant should've been ejected."

Durant said he was trying to hit the backboard and shouldn't have even done that.

"I don't know, man, I thought I was at the gym by myself and in a pickup game, not an NBA game," Durant said of his lapse. "And I can't do that. I could have cost my team the game. But it won't happen again -- I hope so."

Durant added: "I didn't know you could get ejected over that. I'm glad I stayed in the game. I'm sure a hefty fine is coming, but I don't mind giving."

LaMarcus Aldridge helped pick up the slack for the Nets, scoring nine of his 21 points in the fourth quarter to help Brooklyn hold off a pesky Pacers team.

The 16-year veteran also became the 48th player to reach 20,000 career points and just the seventh active player to do so, joining Harden and Durant. It was a milestone that Aldridge didn't think he would reach after he retired last April due to experiencing an irregular heartbeat. He was medically cleared to return this season.

"It feels good, man," Aldridge said. "A true blessing. Definitely didn't think it was going to happen after what happened last year. Stuck with it, fall back and definitely felt good to get it done and be back out there. Just feel blessed."

Lakers vs. Cavaliers Final Score: L.A. gets boost off bench in win - Silver Screen and Roll

The Los Angeles Lakers desperately needed a win, and in LeBron James’ return to the lineup against the Cleveland Cavaliers, they got it. After a truly horrific first half, the team cleaned things up over the final two quarters and held Cleveland to just 16 points in the fourth to coast to a 113-101 win.

The Lakers somehow survived 10 first quarter turnovers to only end the frame down by seven points. That made their five-turnover second quarter somehow an improvement, and allowed them to tie the game up at 54 all heading into halftime. Helping matters was a renewed commitment to getting out on the break, including several Showtime-esque sequences from Russell Westbrook and James. If this team is going to succeed, it’s often going to come in transition, and they’re clearly committed to playing with pace. If they can get just figure out ways to get enough stops to get out and run a bit more, it will certainly help them in games like this one.

Things looked less positive to start the third, which the Cavs started on an early run. But the Lakers further cut back on their turnovers — only coughing up the ball five times in the second half — and were able to take an early lead in the fourth, led not just by James (26 points, 8 assists), Westbrook (19 points, 5 assists, 6 rebounds) and Anthony Davis (15 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks), but the patented advantage extension of Austin Reaves off the bench, and some solid minutes from his fellow reserve Avery Bradley on both ends of the floor.

Bradley hit arguably the key shot to push the Cavaliers back before the Carmelo Anthony floodgates opened, knocking down a key three with just under five minutes left in the final frame to extend the team’s lead. Bradley finished the game with 7 points on 3-5 shooting in 23 minutes, posting a team-high plus-minus of +30.

This was not a pretty game for much of the night, but the Lakers can’t be choosy about how their victories look at this point. And hey, on a night James shot horribly from behind the arc (1-10 shooting from deep), he got something he wouldn’t have last year: Support. The Lakers shot 42.3% from three as a team on the evening. This was the point of adding shooting, to give themselves wiggle room in games when their execution and defense isn’t perfect. In this one, the strategy worked.

This win moves the Lakers to 3-3 on the season, and will offer a nice relief from the pressure and scrutiny that was mounting following their embarrassing loss to the Thunder earlier this week. They’ll see if they can make this a winning streak this weekend when they host the Houston Rockets on Halloween.

Mikey Williams becomes first rookie to take Finals MVP in 18 years

Photo from PBA

Mikey Williams became a member of a rare company following TNT’s title victory in the PBA Philippine Cup as he became just the third rookie to win the Honda-PBA Press Corps Finals Most Valuable Player.

Williams was the unanimous choice as the finals’ best player after averaging 27.6 points on 52-percent shooting while adding 5.2 rebounds and 4.8 assists during the series that ended with TNT closing out Magnolia Pambansang Manok, 94-79, Friday in Bacolor, Pampanga.

“I feel like this is just a surreal moment for all of us,” said Williams. “We definitely put the work in. We definitely put the time in. It’s been a long season. It’s been real challenging for everybody. I think we’re all just really blessed to be in this moment.”

He joined Danny Seigle and Brandon Cablay as the only freshmen to bag the Finals MVP plum in a fitting belated birthday present for Williams, who turned 30 two days earlier in Game 4.

Seigle did it twice in 1999 for San Miguel Beer which ruled that year’s Commissioner’s Cup before sharing the award with Danny Ildefonso in the Governors’ Cup.

Cablay got the honor in the 2003 Invitational when Alaska defeated Coca-Cola.

“I feel like this is just a surreal moment for all of us,” said Williams. “We definitely put the work in. We definitely put the time in. It’s been a long season. It’s been real challenging for everybody. I think we’re all just really blessed to be in this moment.”

Magnolia had no answers for Williams, who shook off his shooting struggles against San Miguel Beer in the semis with his sensational play that included long range shots and other aspects outside of scoring such as rebounding and passing.

Williams was also pleased to get some supporting cast as TNT claimed the series with by average winning margin of 15.5 points.

Coach Chot glad to see super rookie Mikey Williams flourish in finals - Manila Bulletin

Photo from PBA

TNT is delighted to see super rookie Mikey Williams make up for his semifinal struggles with a sensational performance against Magnolia Pambansang Manok in the PBA Philippine Cup Finals.

Williams has produced averages of 28.5 points on 55-percent shooting while adding 5.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists heading into the potential title-clinching Game 5, and could likely take the PBA Press Corps Finals Most Valuable Player award if TNT finishes the job.

It’s been a tremendous championship series for Williams, who had to endure facing premier defender Chris Ross and San Miguel Beer in the semis. In that series that went the full seven games, Williams posted 16.7 points and shot just 32 percent.

“To be very honest, coming into the playoffs, we really didn’t know what kind of game we would get from Mikey because this is his first experience in a finals like this,” said Tropang Giga coach Chot Reyes.

“But I think going up against a guard like Chris Ross in the semis was really instrumental for Mikey to develop I guess his confidence and his playmaking ability. Yes he can make shots, but he also does a lot of things for us — he rebounds, he plays defense for us. And the most important thing is he plays within the system.

“His teammates love playing for him. Because, you know, he’s willing to do whatever it takes,” added Reyes.

That is why Reyes is glad that expectations were exceeded in the series as Williams put one great performance after another that also left the opposing side to also marvel at his play.

“Yes, I knew he’d play well. Would he play this well? Let’s say it’s a pleasant surprise. But I think his teammates also have a lot to do with it,” said the TNT coach.

Williams said first his finals experience of a nature such as a best-of-seven has been made easier with the support he’s getting within the Tropang Giga camp.

“It’s new to me. This is my first finals appearance,” said Williams, also recalling his championship with Mighty Sports Philippines in the 2020 Dubai Invitational. “I came in just not knowing what to expect but just relying on what the coaches are saying and my teammates are doing and just following in their lead.”

Morant sparks Grizzlies fightback to down 'crazy' Warriors - FRANCE 24

Issued on: Modified:

Ja Morant scored 30 points as the Memphis Grizzlies ended Golden State's unbeaten start to the season with a come-from-behind 104-101 overtime victory in San Francisco on Thursday.

The in-form Warriors had looked to be motoring towards a fifth straight win after pouring on 37 points in the first quarter and racing into a 19-point lead early in the second.

But after finishing the half down by 10 at 55-45, Morant rallied Memphis superbly as the Grizzlies hauled themselves back into contention before sealing victory in overtime.

Morant was backed by Desmond Bane with 19 points and Jaren Jackson with 15 points. New Zealander Steven Adams had 12 points.

"I felt like starting out early, we didn't come out ready to play. We allowed them to get comfortable and allowed them to get a big lead," Morant said.

"But everyone knows the Grizzlies man -- we play to the end. We fought back, started locking in on the game plan so we were able to go on a run and get the lead. We had to battle," added Morant, who scored the final points in overtime to seal the Grizzlies win.

The Grizzlies improved to 3-2 while the Warriors fell to 4-1.

Stephen Curry led the Warriors scoring with 36 points but his scoring dried up in the final quarter as the Memphis defense got on top.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr lamented his team's 22 turnovers.

"We had a great first quarter, the ball was moving and then we just got a little crazy out there," Kerr said.

"I give them credit. They came in and dug in and played defense and forced some of the turnovers. Our goal this season was to cut the turnovers down to an acceptable range and we've only done that once.

"It's a good lesson for us. We've got to learn from it, and it's early in the season so I'm confident we will."

Knicks gore Bulls

Golden State were one of two teams to lose their unbeaten record on Thursday as the New York Knicks downed the Chicago Bulls 104-103 in the Windy City.

The Knicks had looked to be cruising towards a deserved win after opening up a 13-point lead with less than three minutes left in the fourth quarter.

The Bulls rallied superbly, however, rattling off a 12-0 to close to within point in the final seconds.

But Bulls star DeMar DeRozan missed a 15-foot pullup shot to win the game on the buzzer, and the Knicks escaped.

"I really didn't expect to be that open," a dejected DeRozan said after his last-gasp miss. "I kind of rushed it.

"It sucks, especially when the team fought extremely hard to get that win. I wanted to pull it off for them, but you can't make every shot."

New York's Kemba Walker, with 21 points, was one of five players in double digits for the Knicks, with R.J. Barrett posting 20 points and Julius Randle 13. Derrick Rose added 12 points against his former club while Evan Fournier had 10.

Zach LaVine was the pick of the Bulls scorers with 25 points, while Nikola Vucevic had 22.

While the Bulls were left to reflect on their first defeat of the season, there was no such disappointment for the Utah Jazz on their road trip in Houston.

The Jazz improved to 4-0 with a comfortable 122-91 defeat of the Rockets at Houston's Toyota Center.

Seven Utah players finished with double-digit points tallies in a game that the Jazz led almost from start-to-finish. Utah were always in control after storming into a 32-18 lead at the end of the first quarter, and led by 36 points at one stage.

Bojan Bogdanovic was the pick of the Utah scorers with 19 points, while Rudy Gobert and Jordan Clarkson had 16 points apiece.

Rockets news: Jalen Green, Jordan Clarkson share heartwarming moment after historic game - ClutchPoints

Thursday’s game between the Houston Rockets and the Utah Jazz marked a historic moment for Filipino fans. The game marked the first time two players of Filipino descent played against each other: rookie Jalen Green versus reigning Sixth Man of the Year Jordan Clarkson. To commemorate this, the Rockets earlier announced a Filipino Heritage Night to celebrate this occasion.

After the game, Green and Clarkson got together for a short question-and-answer with some special Rockets fans. Clearly, the two were all smiles and pretty pleased with the event. (via PHSports LiveScores)

Both Clarkson and Green are familiar with their background as Filipinos. Clarkson, in particular, said this about his and the Rockets rookie’s impact on their country: (via Deseret)

“Just us two being here is super inspirational for the youth and every Filipino-American, every Filipino, anybody with Filipino blood. I feel like it’s just an amazing experience, something that can’t be done again because (it was) the first. Hopefully we see more.”

Clarkson also took to Instagram to hype up Green, praising the Rockets rookie. (via @jclarksons on IG)

@jalen is special, glad to share this moment in history, keep representing brodie!!!”

https://ift.tt/3pMNS96

Rockets fans attending the game, though, didn’t have much to cheer for basketball-wise. The Jazz, a title contender this year, showed no mercy to the rebuilding Rockets, as they thoroughly stomped them 122 – 91. Jordan Clarkson scored 16 points from his usual bench role for the Jazz, while Jalen Green scored 13 points for the home team.

Overall, Filipino fans have something to look forward to in the NBA season, as their two stars prove to be exciting players in the league. The next matchup between the Rockets and the Jazz is on January 20 next year. We’ll see if Green can equalize his matchup against his kababayan.
