Rhythmic gymnast Breanna Labadan on track for all-around final in Asian Championships - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – Breanna Labadan put herself in position to reach the all-around final of the Rhythmic Gymnastics Asian Championships as she ranks seventh through two apparatuses on Wednesday, May 31.

Putting her Europe training on display, the 16-year-old finished eighth in ball (28.8) and ninth in hoop (28.5) for an aggregate of 56.7 points to place seventh overall at the start of the tournament at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

She will look to formalize her finals entry by doing better in the clubs and ribbon events on Thursday, with the top 18 out of the 36 participants advancing.

“I’m quite satisfied. I’m very happy with what I did today. I believe that I worked quite hard for this. I feel like I deserve the place that I got and the scores that I got,” said Labadan.

Her seventh-place standing bodes well for Labadan in her bid to qualify for the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships.

Labadan, a bronze medalist in the Southeast Asian Games last year, is the first rhythmic gymnastics from the Philippines to compete in the world championships when she saw action in Sofia, Bulgaria in September.

Out of the 16 finalists in this Asian championships, the top eight will punch their tickets to the world championships in Valencia, Spain in August.

“I hope to keep that spot,” said Labadan. “I worked hard for all four apparatus. They’re quite even and I worked for them evenly.”

With hardly any surprise, reigning Asian all-around champion Takhmina Ikromova of Uzbekistan seized the top spot with 67.40 points as she ruled both the ball and hoop events with identical 33.7 scores.

The Kazakhstan pair of Elzhana Taniyeva (65.10) and Aibota Yertaikyzy (62.50) are running second and third, respectively.

Filipina bet Daniela dela Pisa sits at 33rd place after netting 23.75 in ball as she skipped the hoop – the event where she struck gold in the 2019 SEA Games.

Dela Pisa, though, can still make the top 18 if she does well in the clubs and ribbon on Thursday.

Trisha Mae Montifalcon wound up at 36th and last place with 20.15 points in the hoop, her lone event of the tournament.

Drawing over 200 participants from 20 countries, the Asian championships – hosted by the Philippines for the first time – will run until Saturday, June 3. – Rappler.com

Toroman: Home crowd gives Gilas 'big advantage' in FIBA World Cup - The Manila Times

Rajko Toroman AFP FILE PHOTO

Former Philippine team coach Rajko Toroman believes a well-prepared Gilas Pilipinas, backed by a massive support from its hometown crowd this August will be huge ingredients to a strong showing in the 2023 FIBA World Cup in Manila.

With the top performing Asian team in the world basketball showpiece earning an automatic berth in the 2024 Paris Olympics, the 68-year-old Toroman knows Gilas will get the much-needed energy from rabid Filipino basketball fans, who are expected to pack the playing venue during the World Cup.

"China is coming back, they put Sasa (Aleksandar) Dordevic, who brought the silver medal to the Serbian national team (in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics). And you always have Japan there so it will be tough (for Gilas), but there is a big chance (because) first of all, they play at home, and that's a big advantage with the crowd, with what they have in Manila," explained Toroman during his guest appearance last Saturday at former PBA commissioner and Philippine Sports Commission chairman Noli Eala's sports program Power and Play.

The straight-talking Serbian coach believes seeing action in Manila gives Gilas Pilipinas an added "25 percent" chance of playing better because of the strong local crowd support.

Toroman personally experienced how it feels to be in an arena filled with passionate Filipino basketball fans.

In fact, as far back as the days when he first coached the original Smart Gilas team in 2009, Toroman, who now handles Al-Muharraq in Bahrain, said playing in front of Pinoy fans is always special.

And in the same sports program, Toroman mentioned that one thing he misses in the Philippines is the warm basketball atmosphere in the arena.

"(I miss the) atmosphere there (in Manila). The personal (relationships with) Filipino players, even now, when I go to Starbucks, there's a lot of Filipinos there who recognize me and talk about Gilas," shared Toroman, who was credited for Indonesia's huge upset on the Philippines en route to winning the 2022 Southeast Asian Games men's basketball gold medal in Hanoi.

"It's always very nice and I'm pleased to hear (encouraging compliments), knowing you did something good for these (Filipino) people. In basketball, it makes you very proud of what I did in the Philippines," he added.

Toroman believes the next few months will be crucial as Gilas coach Chot Reyes decides which between Justin Brownlee and Jordan Clarkson will be the national team's naturalized player.

The veteran international coach said there's no question that both Philippine naturalized players have the individual talents that can benefit Gilas. But who between the two best fits Reyes' system will always be the question.

"That's a big question. Jordan Clarkson is a high-level player, but how he will fit the team (is a question). If you put him in, you will lose some other players (who play the same position). Justin, if you put him there, (under) the system of coach, the way they play will be much better than with Jordan," he said.

"Jordan Clarkson will make some individual efforts, some numbers, but the big question is, will it be enough. (We know) he's a great player in the competition and one of best in the world, but if you are looking for system, to use all players and what you have, Justin Brownlee has some advantage in that way, so now, it's up to the coach to decide, if he will make the system and produce result," added Toroman.

Gilas, which regained the SEA Games men's gold over a week ago in Cambodia, will resume practice on June 7. The national pool, which Reyes said is pegged at 18 or 19 players, will leave some time next month for a series of scrimmages games against Estonia, Finland and the Lithuania under-21 team as part of Gilas' preparation for the FIBA World Cup, which begins on August 25.

Can Brownlee, Clarkson play together for Gilas? - The Manila Times

With Gilas Pilipinas out to make a strong impression as the country co-hosts the 2023 FIBA World Cup this August, Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) board chairman Ricky Vargas suggested that the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) appeal the case of Justin Brownlee to be considered a local player before the world's governing body for basketball.

Brownlee officially got his Filipino citizenship on January 16, played his first two games as a naturalized player for Gilas Pilipinas during the sixth and last window for the 2023 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers in Bocaue, Bulacan.

And just over a week ago, he led the Philippines' version of the "Redeem Team" in recapturing the Southeast Asian Games men's basketball gold after beating host Cambodia in the finals, 80-69.

Having Brownlee as a local player for Gilas and NBA star Jordan Clarkson of the Utah Jazz as a naturalized player, could easily elevate the team's fighting chance in the World Cup.

The Philippines is bracketed in Group A along with world no. 10 Italy, Dominican Republic and Angola.

"It's worth a try. Why not?" said Vargas in a statement posted at the PBA's official website.

Vargas, along with the rest of the key officials of the 12-member teams are currently in Paris, France for a three-day PBA board planning session along with league commissioner Willie Marcial.

"Why does it have to be a choice?" he added. "But the question is, is it possible?"

The TNT team governor believes an appeal by the SBP to FIBA should be considered. After all, the sweet-shooting Brownlee has been playing in the Philippines since 2016, the year he started becoming Barangay Ginebra's import.

The 34-year-old Brownlee has since won six league championships with the Gin Kings.

Vargas, who is banking on FIBA's special residency rule, noted that Brownlee possesses the fighting heart of Filipino players.

"You have a beautiful scenario when you have both (Brownlee and Clarkson playing for Gilas)," Vargas said.

Asistio fired 22 points, highlighted by 5-of-7 shooting from downtown. Nambatac also banged in 22, along with three rebounds and three assists for ROS, which leaned on its defense to convert NLEX's 17 turnovers to 17 points.

Jewel Ponferada added 10, while Leonard Santillan flirted with a double-double after adding nine and hauling down 10 rebounds.

Jeremy Miado hopes impressive win over Mansur Malachiev will lead to title shot vs Jarred Brooks - Sportskeeda

ONE strawweight contender Jeremy Miado believes he’s knocking on the door of a world title shot at 125 pounds.

Despite being currently outside the top five of the strawweight rankings, 'The Jaguar' thinks he should be next in line for divisional king Jarred Brooks if he gets past his next opponent.

On June 9, at ONE Fight Night 11: Eersel vs. Menshikov on Prime Video, Miado will be locking horns against Dagestani wrestler Mansur Malachiev.

While his opponent will be making his promotional debut, Malachiev brings forth an impressive 10-0 record and has held world titles in multiple divisions in the past.

As such, Miado believes a win over Malachiev should catapult him atop the 125 ranks and set up a date with “The Monkey God”.

The Filipino firecracker told the promotion in an exclusive interview:

“If I impress, maybe I even get Jarred Brooks. Looking at the rankings, Jarred has pretty much beaten everyone in the top five. So yeah, I’m hoping for a great performance.”

Truth be told, it’s a shame that Miado did not break into the division’s top five after his last victory.

Since dropping his first two matches in the Singapore-based organization, the Marrok Force standout has racked up four straight TKO victories, with the last one coming at the expense of the hard-hitting Danial Williams.

Miado, however, acknowledged that his failure to meet the obligations of the scales last time out likely prevented him from moving up the rankings.

The 30-year-old will have a chance to right that wrong if he can extend his winning streak to five with another impressive performance against a formidable opponent.

ONE Fight Night 11 will emanate live from the Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok and will air free for Prime Video subscribers in North America.

Lakers to speak with LeBron about retirement comment - Rappler

The Los Angeles Lakers will talk to LeBron James in the coming days after the NBA’s all-time leading scorer said after the team’s exit from the playoffs that he would consider retirement during the offseason.

The 38-year-old James said after his team got swept by Denver from the Western Conference finals late on Monday that he had a lot to think about regarding his basketball future.

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka, speaking to reporters on Tuesday, said that he and head coach Darvin Ham look forward to speaking with James and added that their job is to support athletes if they reach a career turning point.

“LeBron has given as much to the game of basketball as anyone who’s ever played. When you do that, you earn a right to decide whether you’re going to give more,” said Pelinka.

“We’ll be in contact with him, his team, and really providing nothing but support for him. Obviously, our hope would be that his career continues, but we want to give him the time to have that inflection point and support him along the way.”

James’ admission that he is considering retirement came as a surprise given the four-time NBA champion still plays at a high level and has previously expressed a desire to play with his eldest son in the pros, a possibility that could not happen until the 2024-2025 season.

No NBA team has ever won a best-of-seven games series after falling behind 0-3 and James did all he could to keep the Lakers’ season alive as he played all 48 minutes of the elimination game on Monday while also scoring a game-high 40 points.

But with the emotion of that loss still fresh, James ended his post-game press conference with a bit of a surprise.

“I got a lot to think about, to be honest,” James said. “Just me personally, going forward with the game of basketball, I got a lot to think about.”  – Rappler.com

Jokic outduels LeBron as Nuggets reach first NBA finals - The Manila Times

LOS ANGELES: Nikola Jokic outdueled LeBron James as the Denver Nuggets completed a 4-0 Western Conference championship sweep over the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday (Tuesday in Manila) to reach the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history.

Two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Jokic bagged a 30-point triple-double as the Nuggets overturned a 15-point half-time deficit for a 113-111 victory that sent the Lakers crashing out and left James reportedly contemplating a shock retirement from basketball.

James had looked to be single-handedly keeping the Lakers' season alive after scoring 31 points in a magnificent first-half display that left the 17-time NBA champions leading 73-58 at half-time.

But Jokic led a resurgent Nuggets offense in the third quarter, scoring 13 points as the Western Conference top seeds outscored the Lakers 36-16 to turn the contest on its head.

A dramatic fourth-quarter finale saw Jokic put Denver 113-111 ahead with a typically barnstorming driving layup through heavy traffic with 51.7seconds remaining.

With four seconds left, James had one last chance to tie it up and force overtime, but his attempted driving floater was blocked by Denver's Aaron Gordon to leave the Nuggets celebrating a famous win.

A dejected James left the court immediately following the loss as his latest bid for a fifth NBA title ended in disappointment.

James later spoke cryptically about his future in a post-game press conference, while an ESPN report said he was contemplating retirement.

"Just for me personally, going forward with the game of basketball, I've got a lot to think about," James said.

Denver — one of 11 teams in the league who has never won the NBA championship — will face either the Miami Heat or Boston Celtics in the finals.

Miami leads Boston 3-0 and can clinch their place in the finals with a victory at home on Tuesday.

"We don't give up," Jokic told ESPN. "I've been saying this for five years — when we were bad or when we were good — we don't give up. And that's what happened today."

"They jumped on us in the first half; they were better, more aggressive, scoring easily and didn't miss, basically.

"But in the second half we turned the page, and everybody stepped up. It was a collective effort, it's not just one guy."

Jokic finished with 30 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists, while Jamal Murray added 25 points. All of Denver's starters finished with double-digit points tallies, reflecting the team's depth and balance.

The Nuggets will head into the finals brimming with confidence that they can end their near-half-century wait for a maiden NBA crown.

James, meanwhile, described Denver as the best team he has faced since joining Los Angeles five years ago.

"They have scoring. They have shooting. They have play-making. They have smarts. They have length. They have depth," James said.

"And one thing about their team, when you have a guy like Jokic, who is as big as he is but also as cerebral as he is, you can't really make many mistakes versus a guy like that."

'Self-inflicted wounds'

James finished with 40 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists for the Lakers in a heroic attempt to keep the series alive.

"He had an amazing game," Jokic said. "We couldn't stop him in the first half... he's still one of the best to ever play this game."

But the Lakers' supporting cast once again failed to step up when it mattered, with a series of missed baskets in the fourth quarter allowing the Nuggets to hold on to their slender advantage to clinch victory.

Lakers head coach Darvin Ham said his team had paid the price for not making enough shots, praising Denver's ruthlessness down the stretch.

"I just think, again, the phrase for me is 'self-inflicted wounds'. You can't have those," Ham said of the Lakers' performance.

"The sign of a great team is if you make any mistake, they're going to make you pay for it. And they did just that."

Ham, who was appointed last year with a brief to rebuild the Lakers after a dismal failure to reach the playoffs, insisted that the NBA giants were on the right path.

"This is year one," Ham said. "Losing sucks, but I think we can do something special here."

JDG vs. BLG League of Legends MSI 2023 Grand Final: Head-to-head, livestream details, and more - Sportskeeda

The final day of the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) 2023 is on the horizon, as the JDG vs. BLG matchup is ready to square off in the Copper Box Arena in London, England. Just like the LPL Spring 2023 final, fans will get to witness two Chinese juggernauts collide. Regardless of the winner, this will be the fourth time in five years that an LPL team will clinch the MSI trophy.

The hype is real for the JDG vs. BLG best-of-five series. Ahead of the matchup, let's jump into some thorough analysis and statistics.

Preview of JDG vs. BLG at League of Legends MSI 2023 Grand Final

Prediction

JD Gaming (JDG) arrived at this tournament as the first LPL seed after its triumph in the LPL Spring Split. Possibly the best LoL team in the world right now, the side is looking stronger than ever. The team fights, individual performances, and mid-game macros have been excellent so far.

The discourse surrounding which region is the current best in LoL has been going on for quite some time. After the regional tournament, LPL champions JDG smashed the Golden Guardians, Bilibili Gaming, and T1 on its path to the Grand Final.

Despite being a "Silver Scrape," it came out on top against T1 after phenomenal performances from 369 (top), Knight (mid), and Ruler (ADC). The side completely outdrafted its opponents and adapted beautifully to the current LoL meta.

Its South Korean ADC, Park "Ruler" Jae-hyuk, has the best KDA (78/17/65) in the tournament. Furthermore, the next three top KDA players are all from JDG as well (Knight, Missing, and Kanavi). However, the opposition in the final is none other than its regional rival, Bilibili Gaming.

Bilibili Gaming (BLG), on the other hand, showed great promise throughout the tournament, and it gradually increased. Even though it started in the play-in stage, the team went berserk against everyone to reach the bracket stage. In there came the win against LCS champions, Cloud9, 3-0.

Despite being in top form, the team fell short against JDG in the next stage and lost the series 0-3. However, the Lower Bracket Quarterfinal against European giants G2 Esports was a blowout. BLG dismantled the side 3-1 after an astronomical performance from its ADC, Elk.

The next two series were possibly the most unexpected ones, as the team defied the odds to beat LCK's first and second seeds, GenG and T1, respectively. Fans considered GenG and T1 the best teams in the world, but the underdog BLG won 3-0 against GenG and 3-1 against T1. Elk and Xun were impeccable as always and proved that LPL is superior to LCK in every aspect currently.

The battle of JDG vs. BLG will surely be a treat for fans, as the hype and significance are greater than ever. Moreover, this is the first time two LPL teams will face each other in a major international grand final in League of Legends.

The prediction for the JDG vs. BLG matchup will be tough, as both teams look super strong. However, JDG is expected to win in the end, 3-2, after a hard skirmish.

Head-to-head

JDG vs. BLG is a fairly common matchup in the LPL split, as they faced each other on 19 occasions. JDG ended up winning 13 times, while BLG clinched five victories. Only one series ended in a draw. One of the series was in the MSI 2023 Upper Bracket Semifinals, with JDG winning it 3-0.

Previous results

JDG won its last series 3-2 against T1 in the Upper Bracket Final.

Alternatively, BLG also defeated T1 in the Lower Bracket Final. The score was 3-1, and Elk was named MVP.

Lopez then lost the belts to George Kambosos Jr in a split decision loss in 2021. Kambosos Jr then lost the belts to Haney in a 2022 unanimous decision that unified all four belts. Jimmy Butler laughs last in Grant Williams battle, Heat again upset Celtics - Marca

The Miami Heat (8) defeated the Boston Celtics (2) Friday night at TD Garden in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals in the 2023 NBA Playoffs to take a 2-0 series lead. Jimmy Butler got the last laugh over Grant Williams, who decided to poke the bear late in the fourth quarter.

Butler, 33, and Williams, 24, clashed heads when the latter talked trash to the former following a made triple over him, but the Heat star went right back at the Celtics bench player.

Nostradamus Corgi is back: here are AirCorg's picks for NBA Conference FinalsTK/@aircorg

Following the altercation, which occurred after Williams fouled Butler on a made jumper, Miami went on a 24-9 scoring run to finish Game 2 with a six-point victory.

Butler finished the night with 27 points on 12-for-25 shooting from the floor. He missed his only attempt from deep, but added three steals and two blocks. Williams only scored nine points.

Caleb Martin contributed to the victory with 25 points off the bench, while Bam Adebayo added 22 points and 17 rebounds.

Celtics in trouble after blowing lead

Celtics superstars Jayson Tatum (34) and Jaylen Brown (16) combined for 50 points, but went cold in the final frame, allowing the visitors to complete the come-from.behind win.

Tatum, 25, shot 3-for-10 from beyond the arc, adding 13 rebounds and eight assists.

Brown, 26, went 1-for-7 from outside the perimeter and mustered just four rebounds and three assists. Robert Williams scored 13 points and Malcolm Brogdon added 13 more off the bench. Derrick White, part of the three-man bench rotation by head coach Joe Mazzulla, put up 11 points.

Boston is in trouble as the Eastern Conference finals head to Miami for Game 3 & Game 4, starting Sunday. The only postseason home loss for the Heat was in the play-in tournament against the Atlanta Hawks.

Gilas Women boost SEAG silver medal hopes with win against Thais - GMA News Online

The Philippine national women's basketball team boosted its chances for a silver medal finish in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games after its 82-70 victory over Thailand on Sunday in Cambodia.

It was almost a wire-to-wire win for Gilas Pilipinas women as they had the lead 46-38 at the end of the first half. Thailand cut the deficit by two at the 6:15 mark of the third period before the national team eventually held on to the lead until the final buzzer.

Afril Bernardino had 18 points, while Khate Castillo had 11 points. Janine Pontejos and Jack Animam had 10 points apiece.

PH swept by Indonesia in men's volleyball, but coach sees big picture - Rappler

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – The Philippines put up a gallant effort against mighty Indonesia in the third set but still suffered a sweep, 25-18, 25-18, 25-23, in its Southeast Asian Games men’s volleyball opener at the Olympic Stadium here in Cambodia on Wednesday, May 3.

Jau Umandal and Filipino-American newcomer Steven Rotter scored 8 points apiece for the Filipinos, who gave the two-time defending champion Indonesians a run for their money in the third salvo after being dominated in the first two sets.

Trailing 19-23, the Philippines uncorked a 4-1 run highlighted by hits from Rotter and Umandal and capped by a Fahry Septian Putratama error to narrow the gap to 23-24.

But Putratama made up for his mistake with a hit on the next play as Indonesia secured its 11th straight victory in the SEA Games dating back to the 2019 edition hosted by the Philippines.

“This is the last champion. This team is strong,” said Philippine head coach Sergio Veloso. “Sometimes we win, sometimes the opponent wins. But every time, we learn.”

Despite the loss, Veloso said the big picture for the team is to reach the semifinals – a goal that can be enhanced with a win over host Cambodia on Thursday, May 4.

Bundled in Group A, the Philippines will also face Singapore on Saturday, May 6, as two of the top four squads in the bunch will advance to the semifinals.

“Our target is to fight for the semifinals,” said Veloso. “Tomorrow, it’s a good opportunity. Because now, we have one match in, tomorrow, maybe it’s our opportunity… our target is to play our best.”

Jade Disquitado, Jay dela Noche, and Lloyd Josafat scored 2 points each for the Philippines, which is missing the services of top players Bryan Bagunas and Marck Espejo as they both begged off.

Rivan Nurmulki and Angga Anggara tallied 7 points apiece for Indonesia, while Putratama and Farham Halim contributed 6 points each. – Rappler.com

Celtics clobber 76ers in MVP Joel Embiid's return - Rappler

Joel Embiid returned to the Philadelphia 76ers’ lineup for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, but the host Boston Celtics received a game-high 25 points from Jaylen Brown and pulled even in the best-of-seven series by earning a 121-87 victory on Wednesday night, May 3 (Thursday, May 4, Manila time).

The second-seeded Celtics led by eight at halftime and took control of the game in the third quarter, when they outscored the third-seeded 76ers 35-16 to take a 92-65 advantage into the fourth.

Malcolm Brogdon came off the bench to toss in 23 points for the Celtics, who won even though leading scorer Jayson Tatum finished the game with 7 points in 19 minutes.

Marcus Smart (15 points), Derrick White (15), and Grant Williams (12) also scored in double figures for Boston, which made 20 of its 51 (39.2%) three-point attempts.

Embiid, who was named the NBA’s MVP on Tuesday, sprained his lateral collateral ligament on April 20 during Game 3 of Philadelphia’s first-round series against the Brooklyn Nets.

He didn’t play in Game 4, when the 76ers completed a four-game sweep of the Nets. He also sat out Philadelphia’s 119-115 Game 1 victory over Boston on Monday.

Embiid finished Game 2 with 15 points and 5 blocks in 27 minutes. He won a second straight scoring title by averaging 33.1 points per game during the regular season.

Tobias Harris led Philadelphia with 16 points. James Harden, who scored 45 points in Game 1, scored 12 in Game 2.

The 76ers were 6-of-30 (20%) from behind the three-point arc.

The Celtics led 28-22 after one quarter and increased their lead to 12 points – their largest lead of the first half – when an Al Horford triple made it 50-38 with 4:41 left in the second quarter.

The 76ers missed 12 of their 13 three-point attempts in the first half and trailed 57-49 entering the third quarter.

Boston cruised from there, leading by as many as 36.

The series will continue with Game 3 in Philadelphia on Friday. – Rappler.com

Pacquiao announced his retirement in 2021 and last fought in against Yordenis Ugas in August of that year. The bout with Ugas was one of the primary issues of the case.

Pacquiao was originally scheduled to fight welterweight champion Errol Spence, but an injury caused Spence to withdraw. But, Paradigm could not secure an injunction to halt the bout, and it ultimately proceeded. TGB Promotions was presenting the fight.

Due to the Pacquiao-Ugas bout, TGB Promotions was named as an interested party in the civil case.

"The reason that Paradigm's attempt to get the injunction failed was, in large part, due to the fact that we had had an ongoing contractual relationship with Pacquiao which predated any alleged contract that Paradigm entered into with Pacquiao," Phil Weiss, legal counsel for TGB Promotions said.
