NBA betting: Three picks to make after James Harden trade - ESPN - ESPN

The James Harden saga with the Philadelphia 76ers ended just in time for Halloween, and only time will tell which team got tricked and which got treated. Here's some actionable info in the immediate aftermath of the trade between the 76ers and LA Clippers.

What this means for Harden and the Clippers

Harden fundamentally changes the Clippers moving forward. Even at this stage in his career, he is a major usage player whose style requires that he handle the ball a lot and take his share of shots. This will be the third different team in which Harden shares the court with Russell Westbrook, but unlike in their last stop together with the Rockets, this time Harden is the new player trying to fit in on an already established team.

Westbrook is clearly the battery and energy source for this Clippers team, and we've already seen proof he can't be effective as an off-ball guard from his time with the Lakers. Thus, I think Westbrook stays at the point with Harden as more of a scoring, shooting guard. This gives the Clippers four high-volume scoring threats, along with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. If the skill sets mesh, it could make for a potent unit. Fantasy wise, all four players have lower scoring and assist ceilings while sharing the court together.

What this means for the 76ers

Harden hadn't played a game for the 76ers this season, so we've already seen that Tyrese Maxey (30.3 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 6.3 APG, 4.7 3PG) has massive statistical upside this season without Harden. With Harden officially gone, that high ceiling is locked in for Maxey if he stays healthy. The other big fantasy hoops winner for the 76ers is Kelly Oubre Jr., who has averaged 19.0 PPG in 29.3 MPG off the bench, but now becomes the de facto starting power forward with P.J. Tucker gone and a relied-upon scorer behind Maxey and Joel Embiid.

Bullish on Clippers team futures

The Clippers have been favorites in the West each of the past four seasons since Leonard and George joined the team in 2019, but injuries have limited their results. Even when healthy, the Clippers suffered from lack of playmaking without a clearly established point guard. This has hurt them in their playoff losses, and Westbrook has provided visible value as a floor general and energy source to start the season. With Harden in the fold, the Clippers have enough talent to contend even in the face of moderate injury. And if he and Westbrook can refind their synergy, playmaking should now become a major strength for the team. And their 3-point shooting should be enhanced as well. On the whole, the Clippers have just increased their ceiling in a tangible way. I see some value, now, in the Clippers to win the Western Conference (+650), and even more value in the Clippers to win the Pacific Division (+350).

Tyrese Haliburton to win regular season assist title (+125).

Harden won the assists title last season (10.7 APG), and as long as he was on a team where he could run the point he was a threat to win it again. But playing next to Westbrook, Harden's assist upside is curbed enough to take him out of the assists race. This makes the Pacers' Haliburton, who was only 0.3 APG behind Harden last season, the runaway favorite in my eyes to win this season's assist title. Haliburton is off to an amazing start as a distributor, averaging 12.3 APG through the first week, and if he stays healthy, I think this title is his to lose. I find value in this bet, even with Haliburton as the shortest odds on the board.

WATCH: CommBank Matildas emphatically defeat Philippines 8-0 - Matildas

The CommBank Matildas have defeated the Philippines 8-0 in an emphatic performance in front of 59,155 fans in Perth.

Sam Kerr and Caitlin Foord scored hat tricks - in between Mary Fowler’s opener and Clare Wheeler’s first international goal - on the way to inflicting the Philippines’ heaviest-ever defeat. Foord was the standout, involved in all but Kerr’s third goal and racking up a total of four assists.

Tony Gustavsson made ten changes from the side that lined up against Iran on Thursday, with Ellie Carpenter the sole survivor in the starting eleven. That meant that the side resembled the team that fans became familiar with at the World Cup – including goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, the ever-present midfield duo of Kyra Cooney-Cross and Katrina Gorry, and captain Sam Kerr.

Australia opened their account with a sublime goal in the 15th minute. A switch of play from centre-back Alanna Kennedy found Hayley Raso, who was able to control the ball and find Kerr. After a neat wall pass to Carpenter, the ball was whipped into the box to Foord, who helped the ball to Fowler at the back post with a cheeky backheel. Fowler made no mistake with the finish, the ball coming in off the inside of the post to make it 1-0.

Less than five minutes later, the CommBank Matildas doubled their lead. This time it was Sam Kerr who scored. She was the beneficiary of good work from Foord driving into the penalty area and cutting it back to her captain, who made no mistake in front of her hometown crowd.

Sam Kerr returned the favour to her strike partner in the 30th minute. Mary Fowler released Kerr, who played it to Foord, who finished neatly. She scored her brace four minutes later. A clearance from Filipino goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel could only find Hayley Raso, whose ball to Foord perfectly split the defence.

Sam Kerr made it five right on the stroke of halftime. She was in acres of space after a ball from Foord, and after taking her time to pick the right spot, hammered it into the top of the net.

The Philippines made two changes at half-time but it wasn’t enough to stop the Matildas. Less than thirty seconds into the second half, Sam Kerr had her hattrick, heading a cross from Fowler into the back of the net.

Not wanting to miss out, Foord scored her hat trick ten minutes later. After some good work from Mary Fowler to stay upright under heavy defensive pressure, the ball spilled to Foord. It was a fantastic finish from a tight angle into the top of the net to score her third international hat trick, and her first since 2020.

The 64th minute saw four substitutes introduced – Cortnee Vine, Amy Sayer, Clare Wheeler, and Emily van Egmond entered the pitch. They replaced Hayley Raso, Kyra Cooney-Cross, Katrina Gorry and Sam Kerr.

Auistralia's final goal was a special one, both for the pinpoint finish and for the goalscorer. It was substitute Clare Wheeler who scored her first international goal after – who else – Caitlin Foord laid it off for her on the edge of the area. Her shot was too powerful for McDaniel in goal, and the 25-year-old couldn’t contain her joy to score.

The only dampener to the occasion was a hamstring injury to Cortnee Vine, forcing her off the pitch not long after coming on.

In all, it was an unequivocally decisive performance from the CommBank Matildas that left the vast majority of the nearly 60,000 fans at Optus Stadium singing the names of their heroes.

Paralympian swimmer Ernie Gawilan nails 1st PH gold in 4th Asian Para Games - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – In just the second day of the 4th Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China, the Philippine delegation broke through the gold medal tally as Ernie Gawilan ruled the men’s 400m freestyle-S7 event on Tuesday, October 24.

Long hailed as one of the top stars of Philippine para sports, the 32-year-old Gawilan cruised to his fourth career Asian Para gold with a 4:58.29 finish time – 13.87 seconds ahead of Singaporean silver medalist Toh Wei Soon (5:12.16).

The race effectively turned to be a virtual battle for second as China’s Huang Xianquan was not far behind with a 5:16.63 time to clinch bronze, while India’s Niranjan Mukudan barely missed the podium at 5:16.85.

This is Gawilan’s second medal of the event after earning bronze last Monday, October 23, at the men’s 200m individual medley-SM7. Prior to the Hangzhou Para Games, his three other golds all came from the 2018 edition of the quadrennial meet in Jakarta.

“I’m really, really happy because I was able to bounce back from my loss yesterday,” Gawilan told reporters in Filipino. “It’s a big joy for me that I’m not just the athlete who gave the country the first medal, but now also the first gold. That doesn’t happen too often.”

The Philippines also cracked the silver medal list for the first time as wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan finished with a personal best time of 18.65 seconds in the men’s 100m-T52, only behind Japan’s Ito Tatsuya, who clocked in at an Asian Para Games record 17.41 seconds.

Thanks to Gawilan and Mangliwan, the Filipino contingent now stands at 17th in the overall tally with one gold, one silver, and two bronzes.

Host China expectedly leads the medal board by a wide margin with 67 golds, 53 silvers, and 45 bronzes as of 9:30 pm. Iran is a distant second with a 16-19-12 tally in the week-long athletic showpiece. – Rappler.com

NBA MVP conversation goes beyond Embiid, Giannis and Jokic in 2023-24 - USA TODAY

We know the NBA MVP candidates. They are the usual suspects based on the past few seasons: Denver’s Nikola Jokic, Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo and Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid – those three have won the past five MVPs.

Embiid won the award in 2023, Jokic in 2022 and 2021 and Antetokounmpo in 2020 and 2019 – all finished 1-2-3 last season followed by Boston’s Jayson Tatum and Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Dallas’ Luka Doncic finished eighth last season and fifth in 2022. He’s among the favorites again this season.

And past winners, such as Golden State’s Stephen Curry and Phoenix’s Kevin Durant, will get mentions. But keep in mind, just two players 35 or older have won MVP: Karl Malone at 36 and Michael Jordan at 35. Curry turns 36 this season and Durant just turned 35.

But who are the under-the-radar candidates on the verge of entering the MVP discussion? Let’s take a look:

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards

Edwards, 22, made his first All-Star team last season yet has not made an All-NBA team. It would be quite a leap from missing the All-NBA one season to winning MVP the next. However, the 6-4 Edwards is trending in the right direction after averaging 24.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.6 steals and shooting 45.9% from the field and 36.9% on 3-pointers in his third season in 2022-23.

Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray

Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray passes the ball while defended by Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler and guard Max Strus.

On the same team with two-time MVP Nikola Jokic, who is still in his prime and coming off a Finals MVP and title, it’s hard for another player to break into the MVP conversation. But Murray, 26, is healthy and confident after his own impressive playoff run last season at 26.1 points, 7.1 assists, 5.7 rebounds and 47.3% shooting from the field and 39.6% shooting on 3s. A full season like that would make it difficult to ignore Murray, who is aiming for his first All-Star and/or All-NBA selection.

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell

Mitchell earned his first All-NBA selection and his fourth All-Star appearance last season, posting career highs (28.3 points and 48.4% shooting) in his first season with the Cavs in 2022-23. He also averaged 4.4 assists and 4.3 rebounds, flirting with 25-5-5 stats. If Cleveland is a top 3-4 team in the East, Mitchell, who finished sixth in voting last season, will be among the top contenders.

New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson

This is all contingent on Williamson’s ability to stay healthy and on the court for 65-plus games, which he has been unable to do in his four seasons: 24 games in 2019-20, 61 in 2020-21, no games in 2021-22 and 29 in 2022-23. But when he’s on the court, he is a force and makes the Pelicans better. In limited action, Williamson averaged 26.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.1 steals and shot 60.8% from the field last season. Can he do that for a full season?

More:Counting down the NBA's top 30 players for 2023-24 season: Nos. 30-16

Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard

Lillard, 33, is coming off a career high in scoring (32.2 points per game) and matched a career high in shooting percentage (.463). He averaged 7.3 assists and 4.8 rebounds and shot 37.1% on 3s. Lillard could be even more efficient playing alongside Antetokounmpo. However, Lillard, who finished fourth in MVP voting in 2017-18, needs to be better than Antetokounmpo, and Steve Nash in 2005-06 is the last player to win MVP in his 30s.

Sacramento Kings guard De’Aaron Fox

Fox earned an All-Star appearance and All-NBA selection for a season in which he averaged 25.0 points, 6.1 assists, 4.2 rebounds and shot 51.2% from the field, helping the Kings to a 48-34 record and their first playoff appearance since 2006. Fox received two fifth-place votes for MVP last season. His teammate, Domantas Sabonis, was seventh in the MVP race, but if Fox increases his assists and rebounds, improves his 3-point shooting and maintains his scoring and overall shooting, Fox will be part of the conversation.

The great Zobel de Ayala pickleball match - Manila Bulletin

How this unique game has become one of the fastest-growing sports

5.jpg
A PICKLEBALL FAMILY From left: Jaime Alfonso Zobel de Ayala, Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, and Lizzie Zobel de Ayala

Pickleball, not to be confused as a formal event dedicated to the flavorful treat, has recently made a name for itself as one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide.

But what exactly is it?

Surprisingly enough, pickleball finds its roots as far back as 1965 in the US after Washington state representative Joel Pritchard invented it alongside his friends Bill Bell and Barney McCallum. Some say that the sport got its unusual name after Pritchard’s wife, Joan, suggested calling it pickleball after the game’s mixed elements from other sports like tennis and badminton reminded her of a “pickle boat,” a boat comprising of rowers from different crews who race together after a competition.

Other stories claim the sport was named after their dog, Pickles.

1.jpg
A TOAST TO PICKLEBALL From left: Gretchen Ho, Mariana Zobel de Ayala, Philippine Pickleball Federation president Armando Tantoco, Chrissy Roa, Toby’s Sports president Toby Claudio, and Paolo Abrera

Playing pickleball is quite simple. While pickleball is usually played in a court that’s 20 feet (six meters) wide and 40 feet (12 meters) long, all you’ll essentially need is a concrete surface to play on, some paddles, the pickleball, and a net in the middle to play the sport. In action, it’s a mix of elements from tennis, badminton, and ping pong. Of course, the best way to learn the sport is to witness and experience it for yourself.

2.jpg
AYALA SERVES Ayala Corporation chairman Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala throws an excellent pickleball serve

On a bright sunny day on Oct. 6, at the Greenbelt Fashion Walk in Makati City, Ayala Malls kickstarted the surge of pickleball in the country through its Ayala Malls PickleMall, Pickleball at Ayala Malls event. To demonstrate just how exciting the sport is, a thrilling pickleball match between Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala and Mariana Zobel de Ayala versus Lizzie Zobel de Ayala and Jaime Alfonso Zobel de Ayala was held. It had the entire crowd glued to the scene as the family members showcased their expertise in the sport. In the end, mother and son reigned triumphant taking the lead in a rather close game (11-8).

3.jpg
FUN WITH THE FAMILY A friendly pickleball match took place at the Greenbelt Fashion Walk between

“We feel that it’s a unique sport that can bring lots of different types of people together,” beams Mariana Zobel de Ayala. “And in my eyes, it fits perfectly into what we want Ayala Malls to be… A place where everyone feels welcome and at home.”

TRY IT YOURSELF Market! Market! has become one of the first malls in the Philippines to put up a permanent pickleball court

Of course, you too can have a shot at trying out this wonderful sport. Market! Market! has taken the lead by becoming one of the first malls in the Philippines to feature a permanent pickleball court. Other Ayala Malls will shortly follow. There will also be a series of scheduled pickleball clinics held at various Ayala Malls. For those who want to try out the competitive scene, Ayala Malls will also be holding an inter-mall tournament open to the public.

'Wronged' EJ Obiena mulls legal action over doping accusations by wife of former Olympic champion - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino pole vault star EJ Obiena and his camp are mulling legal action over doping allegations made by the wife of former Olympic champion Renaud Lavillenie of France.

Anais Lavillenie, whose husband won the men’s pole vault gold in the 2012 London Games, said Obiena will suffer the same downfall as Thiago Braz after the Brazilian got provisionally suspended for failing a doping test.

Braz, who beat Renaud for the crown in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, and Obiena are both mentored by Ukrainian coach Vitaly Petrov.

“Obiena doped and it’ll fall like Braz. Same coach, same plan, same objective,” Anais commented on the Facebook page of Vaulter Magazine, which shared a story by The Manila Times about Obiena believing he can beat world record holder Armand Duplantis of Sweden in the 2024 Paris Games.

Anais, a former pole vaulter, has since deleted her comment.

Fresh from a record-breaking performance in the Asian Games that saw him win one of the Philippines’ four gold medals, Obiena cried foul over Anais’ accusations.

“I want to remain classy and dignified on this subject. All I will say is I am disappointed, angry, and feel wronged by these statements,” Obiena wrote on his Facebook page on Sunday, October 15. “I will let the story evolve while my team explores the many angles, including legal.”

Obiena enjoyed a stellar outdoor season as he won medals in 15 of the 16 events he took part in.

The 27-year-old completed a three-peat in the Southeast Asian Games, retained his title in the Asian Athletics Championships, and bagged a historic silver in the World Athletics Championships.

He joined the exclusive six-meter club as the first and only Asian, qualified for the Paris Olympics in his first attempt, and rose to a career-high second in the world rankings, just behind Duplantis.

Putting the cherry on top to a superb campaign, Obiena captured his first Asian Games gold with a record-setting 5.90m vault in Hangzhou, China, last September 30.

“I guess this is part of the price you pay when you win,” Obiena wrote.

While Obiena continues his rise, the 37-year-old Renaud has been on a decline.

Renaud, who previously held the world record of 6.16m he set in 2014 for six years before Duplantis came along, has yet to hit the Olympic qualifying mark of 5.82m.

Braz has fallen off the top of the world rankings as well as he slipped to No. 25 – a decline compounded by a positive doping test in July. – Rappler.com
