CEBU CITY, Philippines — There are more reasons for Sacred Hearters to celebrate the 25th season of Cebu’s longest-running alumni-based basketball league, the Sacred Heart Ateneo Alumni Basketball Athletic Association (SHAABAA) which unfolded on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at the SHS-AdC campus in Canduman, Mandaue City.

During the opening ceremony, SHAABAA President Kevin Bling Lim proudly announced the “SHAABAA Cares,” a charitable cause intended for SHS-AdC’s retired faculty teachers and staff.

SHAABAA officials will be donating P25 for every three-point shot made from the tip-off all the way to the last game in the finals.

“This gesture is our act of giving back to their service rendered throughout the years. To commemorate our 25th year in this league, we’ll kick off a fund-raising by donating P25 for every three-point shot made this season,” said Lim during the opening ceremony attended by the 27 competing teams in three divisions.

“SHAABAA will set aside P25 for first three-point shot and hopefully down to the last game in the finals in October. If the entire league produces a thousand three-point shots, then SHAABAA will put P25,000 for the fund-raising,” added Lim.

On top of that, SHAABAA have existing emergency funds for its community, particularly its retired teachers and faculty staff for medical and burial assistance.

“On top of our usual games, SHAABAA will be doing charity works for our community, to implement this undertaking, we shall be asking volunteers and our players, friends, and families to help in giving back to our community. Under SHAABAA cares we will put up emergency funds for our retired faculty and staff members of SHS-AdC. The funds to be used for medical assistance and burial assistance, and other needs for our Ateneo de Cebu family,” said Lim.

Filipino center Kai Sotto to return to NBL for 2022-23 season - The Rookie Wire

Kai Sotto, a 7-foot-2 center from the Philippines, on Friday announced he will return to play with the Adelaide 36ers in the National Basketball League for the 2022-23 season.

Sotto, a former four-star prospect, averaged 7.5 points and 4.5 rebounds on 50% shooting from the field in 23 games last season with the 36ers. He produced perhaps his best game of the season on April 10, when he recorded a career-high 21 points.

The 20-year-old declared for the NBA draft in April and worked out for at least seven teams throughout the process. However, he went undrafted on June 23 and ultimately did not join a team for summer league earlier this month.

Sotto previously signed with the NBA G League Ignite for the 2020-21 season but never suited up due to prior obligations with the Philippines national team. He was the first international player to sign a contract with the G League.

He will now have the opportunity to continue playing with the 36ers next season in an attempt to play in the NBA. The NBL has helped several players in recent memory make it to the NBA and Sotto looks to be the next in line after another year down under.

The 36ers begin next season on Oct. 13 versus the Tasmania JackJumpers.

Chot Reyes thanks SBP for support, asks for dismayed fans' patience amid 'transition period' - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – Chot Reyes expressed his gratitude for the continuous support of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio and doubled down on his call for patience from disgruntled Gilas Pilipinas fans.

Panlilio cleared Reyes of the blame despite the growing clamor for his exit after the team fell short of a Southeast Asian Games gold and finished ninth in the FIBA Asia Cup – its worst in 15 years – with him at the helm.

“Huge thanks, real appreciation to president Al Panlilio for speaking up and reiterating the SBP support for the coaching staff,” Reyes said on Wednesday, July 27, after steering TNT back to the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals.

As a proof of their trust, Panlilio revealed the SBP turned down Reyes’ resignation after he offered to leave his post as head coach and program director following the SEA Games debacle.

The 58-year-old mentor confirmed that he tried to resign, admitting that the flak he continues to receive has been hard on his family.

“It’s very, very difficult. It’s very difficult for my family,” Reyes said. “[But] somebody has to do the job. I’ve always said before that I will never turn back to my duty to flag and country.”

Expected to call the shots for the national team until the FIBA World Cup next year, Reyes asked fans to understand that Gilas Pilipinas is still in a transition period after he took over the coaching reins from Tab Baldwin.

It has only been six months since Reyes replaced Baldwin, who the SBP said “stepped down” from the program to focus on the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the UAAP.

“We’re trying to win, we hope we could have won more than we have lost, but it’s just we’re making do with the cards that are dealt us,” Reyes said.

“That’s the only way I know how to answer. What you see is what you get. There’s no other vested interest on my part.”

While Panlilio pointed to Baldwin as the root cause of Gilas Pilipinas’ struggles, Reyes refused to give his opinion on his former consultant.

“I would rather not comment on it except to say that we are doing our best,” Reyes said.

“We’re in a period of transition. And in any transition, when things are going well, with transition, there’s a change. You would expect things to get worse first before it gets better.”

“That’s how it is in everything, in work, in life, in basketball, in sports. That’s why we’re asking for everyone’s continued support and patience.” – Rappler.com

Mikey Williams, TNT agree to three-year deal - Manila Bulletin

Mikey Williams, TNT agree to three-year deal

The back-and-forth negotiation finally came to an end after TNT and high scoring guard Mikey Williams reached an agreement with a contract extension just in time for their quarterfinals clash against Converge.

Mikey Williams (PBA Images)

Williams was signed to a three-year deal on Tuesday with team manager Jojo Lastimosa, putting a resolution to the contract negotiation which lasted for a couple of months.

Last season’s Rookie of the Year even missed half of the elimination schedule of the Tropang Giga although he showed why he is deserving of a new deal in his return, averaging 21.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists in five games.

Williams had a clause on his initial contract which allows him to renegotiate his two-year deal if he managed to help TNT to a championship. The Tropang Giga reigned supreme in the last season’s Philippine Cup which enabled Williams to impose the clause.

Negotiations were stalled for quite some time between Williams and head coach Chot Reyes who back then was handling the situation before Lastimosa came into the picture as TNT’s new team manager.

CommBank Junior Matildas kick off AFF U18 Women's Championship with a win over the Philippines - Matildas

The CommBank Junior Matildas kicked off their AFF U18 Women’s Championship campaign with a 4-0 win over the Philippines, the win was the team's first international activity since their involvement in the 2019 AFC U16 Women's Championship where they finished fourth in the tournament three years ago.

Australia goes to the top of Group B after their opening game, with Avaani Prakash scoring twice and India Beier and Maya Lobo both finding the back of the net in the second half.

Head Coach Rae Dower spoke about the victory after her side's opening match.

"I'm ecstatic to finally get this talented group onto the park after nearly three years in limbo. They're such a talented group of footballers and they've worked so hard for this opportunity to shine on the international stage," she said.

"I'm proud to have given 16 players their debuts tonight.  To see the beaming smiles on their faces when player mentor and former Matilda, Tammie Thornton and I presented them with their jerseys on the eve of the match, will live long in all of our memories.

"Tonight's match was another step forwards in the football careers of the players. I'm very proud of the players and staff after such a dominant performance," she continued.

Dower also spoke about the exciting challenge of their opening match-up.

"The Philippines is a physical, combative team and it was an ideal way to kick off our tournament.

"We matched their physicality and were strong all over the park, dusting off some nerves in their first match together.

"We created many goal-scoring opportunities with some sublime combination play. Their goalkeeper made some outstanding saves and we hit the crossbar and post a couple of times.

"Overall, a total team performance allowed for some well-constructed goals to Avaani, Indi and Maya and we're looking forward to being even more clinical in our finishing the next match."

When asked about the biggest positives from the CommBank Junior Matildas' first international activity in three years, Dower said it's seeing how ready the team is to improve, learn and make the most of the tournament.

"What's most pleasing is that we know there's so much improvement in the team and the players are hungry to get back out there for the next match and improve on that performance."

Australia's next match of the AFF U18 Women’s Championship 2022 will see them take on Malaysia on Wednesday night, Malaysia picked up a 2-0 win over Myanmar in their opening game of the tournament.

Pinoy 'Skipman' shatters another Guinness jump rope record - Manila Bulletin

Pinoy ‘Skipman’ shatters another Guinness jump rope record

Ryan Ong Alonzo shattered another world record for most number of consecutive jump rope crossovers during the “Unbreakable” event on Sunday, July 24, at the Ayala Malls Circuit in Makati City.

Ryan Ong Alonzo (right) along with coach Benzi Yang

Known as the “Skipman” who already holds the Guinness World Record for most number of double under skips in 12 hours at 40,980, Alonzo only needed a little over 35 minutes to eclipse the previous mark of 2,405 before going on for another 20 minutes to successfully register 3,732 crossovers right on his first attempt.

Skipman tried to surpass his own mark but came up short in his last two efforts, recording 3,282 crossovers in his second attempt and 3403 in the third.

A crossover in jump rope is performed by crossing the arms in front during the standard swing motion and jumping through the loop created. The record was previously held by Harbaksh Singh who completed the feat in December 2019 in Lok Vihar, Delhi in India.

It was the second world record for the nephew of Dr. Willie Ong and co-owner of Kumori Japanese Café after he also broke the record in most double under skips in October last year.

Unlike in the previous Guinness attempt where he had the chance to take a breather after every hour, Alonzo displayed poise and endurance during the course of the attempt.

Skipman’s team now awaits the confirmation from the Guinness Books of World Records to officially acknowledge his record-breaking feat.

On their fifth try, FunPlus Phoenix finally beat Fnatic at Stage 2 Masters - Upcomer

In the first match with a live crowd at the VALORANT Champions Tour 2022 Stage 2 Masters tournament, FunPlus Phoenix finally beat Fnatic and made it to the top three. The two teams have faced off before, three times regionally and once already in this tournament. All four of those times, FPX lost, mostly recently in a 2-0 sweep. Once FPX got their rematch in the lower bracket, it was clear they were craving that win over Fnatic.

Not only that, but in their last two wins, FPX qualified themselves for Champions and got some more LAN experience. Since they missed Stage 1 Masters, this debut at a 2022 LAN was a great start. At the same time, their expectations weren’t high. Even with the crowd cheering more for Fnatic than them, FPX played well when it mattered most.

“You still feel some pressure playing on stage, especially with the crowd cheering against us,” said player Kyrylo “ANGE1” Karasov. “Even then, we played well, didn’t experiment with Yoru picks, and it went well.”

That Yoru pick statement led to some laughs from the team, joking around. But, he was right in that sense, as FPX made better map vetos and composition choices this time around.

FPX started strong on all maps against Fnatic

Each map in the series, on Split, Bind and Fracture, FPX had a lead at halftime. It didn’t start great, with their first map’s 8-4 lead developing into a 15-13 overtime loss. But the team kept a simple mindset that many of the teams at the top follow: one round at a time.

“At this level, you play round by round,” said player Ardis “ardiis” Svarenieks. “You can’t take any lead for granted. Even if it’s a 12-4 lead, whatever it is, as soon as you do, you lose.”

ANGE1 hopped on that statement as well, commenting on how that helps narrow the focus for the team.

“Focusing round by round also helps relieve any pressure that the map or match builds up,” ANGE1 said.

Plus, it helped that in the top four of an international competition that FPX faced a familiar opponent. In those four previous matchups, two of them were three map losses. They clearly fought them close before, and this time around the team played cleanly enough to get the series win.

OpTic Gaming are next up for FunPlus Phoenix

Now that they’ve beaten Fnatic, FunPlus Phoenix will face OpTic Gaming on their Stage 2 Masters run. The Stage 1 Masters champions just lost to Paper Rex in an upset, and while FPX are familiar with OpTic as fans, ANGE1 admits that he doesn’t have any idea how the matchup between OpTic and FPX will go.

“I have no idea how it will go,” ANGE1 said. “Every time I watched OpTic before, it was as a viewer or fan instead of studying them. We don’t play like them, so we don’t study them either. We’ll prep either tomorrow morning or tonight, decide on the map vetos and try our best.”

'Like my ... Pero': Flynn Cameron's heartwarming family moment after Tall Blacks upset victory - Stuff

In Jakarta: New Zealand 88 (Flynn Cameron 22, Taki Fahrensohn 16, Tohi Smith-Milner 14) beat Korea 78 (Ra Guna 19, Kim 13, Choi 11.) 1Q: 26-23, 2Q: 40-46, 3Q:60-60.

Rising Tall Blacks star Flynn Cameron showed composure on the court and control off it, as he narrowly prevented himself from an awkward 'Dad' moment at the post-match conference.

In an outstanding final quarter, Cameron drove the Tall Blacks into a semifinal showdown with the Australian Boomers following an upset and hugely significant 88-78 win over Korea in the Asia Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia on Friday morning (NZ time).

With the game locked up 60-60 at three-quarter time, Cameron stepped up – much like his father used to do – with 14 points in a dominant fourth quarter where the 22-year-old guard showed composure, mixed with skill and determination to lead the Kiwis to victory.

Cameron, the MVP for the match, broke into a chuckle at the post-match press conference when he saved himself from using the d-word, just, in a heartwarming family moment.

“It’s a great learning environment being a part of the New Zealand Tall Blacks, coaches like my ... Pero,” Cameron said before breaking into laughter when he realised he almost called his coach Dad.

Cameron, who plays for the UC Riverside Highlanders in California where he studies business marketing, also pulled down nine boards and dished out eight assists as well as scoring a game high 22 points.

Taki Fahrensohn scored 16 points, highlighted by four triples from beyond the arc, Tohi Smith-Milner grabbed 14 points and Taine Murray rattled off nine points to go with his six rebounds.

In more welcome news for Pero Cameron’s Tall Blacks, Sam Timmins returned after suffering an ankle injury in the win over Syria, earlier in the week, to pull down 14 rebounds to go with his six points.

Ahead of the weekend’s semifinal against Australia, Pero Cameron said the Asia Cup had already been an invaluable learning experience for all of his young side, especially the guards.

The Tall Blacks legend turned coach was impressed by his star guard and son but was only too aware there was much development still to come.

“There’s some things he does well and there’s some work ons that he needs to work on, he knows that,” coach Cameron said.

Flynn Cameron felt the team was growing in confidence with every game.

“It’s a great learning environment for not only myself but all the other players on the team, we’re a young team.

“Every game we play we’re constantly growing as a team off the court and on the court and the results show that.”

The other semifinal will be contested between Jordan and Lebanon. The Tall Blacks went down to Lebanon 72-86 last weekend in the only loss for the Kiwis so far.

They did not come up against Jordan or Australia in section play.

Arana shows poise as Converge escapes Blackwater to stay alive in QF race - Manila Bulletin

Converge rookie Justin Arana showed maturity as he delivered the biggest plays down the stretch to squeeze out a 92-90 victory over Blackwater in the 2022 PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday, July 20, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Justin Arana (PBA Images)

The 23-year-old center showed nerves of steel on both ends of the floor, first scoring on a short stab to tie the game at 90-all before blocking Jvee Casio’s layup attempt on the other end with 20 seconds left. Arana then showed patience in the next possession, making a hook shot in traffic to put the FiberXers ahead, 92-90, with 10 seconds remaining.

Blackwater had the chance to send the game to an extra period but Barkley Ebona botched an open layup off a nice feed from Casio at the buzzer.

With the win, the FiberXers are now assured of at least a playoff for the eighth seed after wrapping up the eliminations with a 5-6 record. Their victory also eliminated Phoenix and NorthPort, which are both sporting 3-7 records at the 10th and 11th spots of the standings.

Arana dropped nine of his 13 points in the final frame which also went with five rebounds. Maverick Ahanmisi also displayed an all-game brilliance with 18 points and seven assists while Abu Tratter finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Converge head coach Jeff Cariaso lauded his wards for playing with a sense of urgency.

“We made it clear what we are playing for and that was to give us a higher chance to make the playoffs in our first conference. I think that motivated us even more,” said Cariaso.

“We got our butts kicked the last game so we wanted to also make sure to come out better. We knew that we are better than what we showed in the last game and we wanted to play better and I think the guys did that,” he added.

Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser showed the way for the Bossing with 20 points and 12 rebounds while Casio provided support with 16 of his own. Baser Amer added 12 but was well defended in the last play after delivering clutch baskets for Blackwater in their last two wins.

Those efforts, however, went futile as they absorbed their fourth straight defeat and now are even in danger of missing the playoffs altogether.

It was a nip-and-tuck affair all-game long, evident in the 20 lead changes and nine deadlocks in the crucial contest. Blackwater managed to take a nine point lead, 60-51, late in the third quarter but the FiberXers managed to recover behind timely hits from Arana and Allyn Bulanadi to keep it close in the final frame.

Ryan Garcia vs. Javier Fortuna fight results, highlights: 'King Ry' scores sixth-round knockout - CBS Sports

Javier Fortuna promised that when he stepped into the ring with Ryan Garcia, he'd prove Garcia was overrated. Unfortunately for Fortuna, his predictive powers were lacking as Garcia dominated the fight from the opening seconds before scoring a sixth-round knockout to the delight of the crowd inside Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Fortuna (37-4-1, 26 KO) never managed to get anything going offensively in the fight, struggling to deal with Garcia's length as the 23-year-old worked behind a stiff jab and long straight right hands.

The patient long-range attack of Garcia (23-0, 19 KO) paid off in big ways as Fortuna's guard steadily came up, exposing his ribs. Garcia took advantage of that in the fourth round, landing a crushing left hook to the body that sent Fortuna reeling before he took a knee for the first knockdown of the fight.

Things didn't get better for Fortuna in the fifth round as Garcia's left hand moved from the body back to the head. One of those left hooks caught Fortuna flush, sending Fortuna to the canvas for the second time in the fight, with the Dominican veteran wincing badly as he hit the deck.

The third and final knockdown of the fight came just moments into the sixth round as Garcia unloaded a three-punch combination that finished with another left hook and sent Fortuna to the canvas once again. This time, Fortuna did not rise and Garcia was awarded the knockout at the 0:27 mark of the round.

Despite both fighters normally campaigning at lightweight, the fight was contested at super lightweight at the request of the Fortuna camp. After the fight, Garcia made it clear that he was so comfortable at the weight that he would not be returning to the lightweight division.

Even with what he claims is a permanent move up in weight, Garcia remains focused on a massive fight with one of lightweight's other young stars in Gervonta "Tank" Davis for his next outing.

"100 percent, I felt way better," Garcia said. "I'm not going back to 135 for nothing but I will fight 'Tank' next. If 'Tank' wants it at 140. Hey, I'm going to record all the negotiations so that you guys don't make no headlines saying I'm ducking. If he wants it, let's get it. ... That's going to give me the respect I deserve. I'm never afraid. I've said I have a spirit of competition in me. You're going to see that come out when I fight tank and whoop his ass."

Garcia and Davis have long talked up a potential fight while sharing the lightweight division along with other young stars like Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez, another fighter who has recently moved to the 140-pound division.

While Davis has ventured to the super lightweight division to win the WBA's secondary title with a dramatic win over Mario Barrios, it's unknown if he would be willing to return to the weight given he is only five-foot-five. The fight also hinges on various promoters and networks being able to work out a deal that is fit for all involved.

Former Mustang De Los Santos Makes Cut in 150th British Open - Cal Poly - Cal Poly Athletics

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland -- Former Cal Poly golfer and 2015 Big West Conference individual champion Justin De Los Santos has made the cut and will play in the final two rounds of the 150th British Open this weekend.

De Los Santos carded a first-round 71 and a second-round 73 for an even-par 144 total, tied for 66th place with 17 other golfers. The cut was at 144.

On Thursday, De Los Santos bogeyed the second hole on the Old Course at St. Andrews, but quickly regained the stroke with a birdie on No. 4. He then rebounded from another miscue on No. 11 with a pitch-in eagle-2 on the next hole before holing out with another birdie following a bogey on the 17th.

In Friday's second round, De Los Santos carded two birdies and three bogeys. He birdied the seventh and 14th holes while carding bogeys at holes 2, 5 and 13.

Cameron Scott takes a two-stroke lead over first-round leader Cameron Young into Saturday's third round. Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland share third place, another shot back.

The Japan Tour campaigner earned a slot in the season's final major championship with a fourth-place finish in the Mizuno Open at Okayama, Japan.

Playing in his first major, De Los Santos is Cal Poly's first participant in the British Open and the lone Filipino golfer in the field this week.

Now 26 and living in the Philippines, De Los Santos turned pro on August 1, 2017, and has compiled $140,628.72 so far in career earnings. His fourth-place finish at the Mizuno Open is his highest career finish so far on the JGTO and De Los Santos also finished in a tie for sixth place in the ISPS Handa Championship in late April with a 19-under-par 265 total, carding rounds of 65, 66, 64 and 70. He led by one stroke entering the final round.

De Los Santos' best round on the JGTO is a 63 in the third round of the 2021 Panasonic Open Golf Championship en route to a sixth-place tie.

On the Abema Tour, De Los Santos won the 2019 Japan Create Challenge in Fukuoka, Japan, with rounds of 68, 71 and 66 for an 11-under-par 205 total. He defeated Toru Nakajima in a playoff.

As a sophomore at Cal Poly, De Los Santos won the 2015 Big West title at the San Luis Obispo Country Club with rounds of 70, 73 and 69 for a 212-total. The Chaminade High School graduate and Chatsworth native finished his Mustang career with a 72.84 scoring average, 12 top-10 finishes and 51 rounds of par or better, including 15 in the 60s.

His best round as a Mustang was a 65 in the Del Walker Intercollegiate.

VALORANT community disappointed by VCT Masters Copenhagen playoff format - Dot Esports

Riot Games is receiving backlash for the VALORANT Masters Copenhagen playoff format, which potentially pits the North American and EMEA teams against one another.

The VCT Masters Copenhagen playoff format was revealed on the third day of the event after two teams had already been eliminated during the group stage. While the format is determined by a “random draw,” it once again has NA teams potentially facing each other in the quarterfinals and has all three EMEA teams on the same side of the bracket.

After the format was revealed, several members of the VALORANT community commented on the lack of interesting matchups at an international event. XSET’s Zachary “zekken” Patrone made a comment about flying to a different country to play the same team they had played during Challengers Two.

“Fly halfway across the world to possibly vs the team I usually play from my bedroom cool cool,” zekken said on Twitter.

XSET will have to face either KRÜ Esports or OpTic Gaming in the first round of the playoffs. OpTic and XSET faced each other twice throughout Challengers Two, once earlier in the tournament and again during the grand finals. In response to zekken’s original tweet, another VALORANT professional from DarkZero commented on the ridiculousness of the top seeds from NA playing each other.

“It shouldn’t even be possible for the #1 & #2 NA teams to play round 1,” Justin “Trick” Sears said. “Hopefully they change it in the future.”

It’s not just NA possibly facing each other that the VALORANT community is upset with, either. All three qualified EMEA teams have the potential of ending up on the same side of the bracket. That includes the potential of two EMEA teams facing each other in the opening round.

Fans are urging Riot to change the format and allow teams from different regions to play one another during an international event. This would avoid stale matchups that people have seen multiple times before by watching regional qualifiers.

Gilas' 3x3 Asia Cup gold medal dream run ends after New Zealand semis beatdown - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – New Zealand dashed Gilas Pilipinas Men’s gold medal dream hopes at the 2022 FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup after a dominant 21-13 beatdown in Singapore on Sunday, July 10.

Nikau McCullough sparked the Kiwis’ breakaway with 8 points off a 3-of-6 barrage from two-point range, highlighted by a rainbow deuce that heralded doom with 6:34 still left for the 11-5 gap.

Jayden Bezzant, Dominique Kelman-Poto, and Zach Easthope then took turns bullying the smaller Filipinos in the post to keep comfortable distance until the endgame.

One last McCullough free throw off a Joseph Eriobu unsportsmanlike foul then sealed the deal with 3:40 remaining, and formally booted Gilas down to the third place game later in the day at 7:45 pm.

Veteran sniper Almond Vosotros led the offense anew with 8 points off a 2-of-6 deuce clip as no one else scored more than 2.

He was coming fresh off another 8-point outing – capped by a stunning game-winning deuce – over top-seeded Mongolia in a nail-biting 21-20 escape in their knockout quarterfinal match. – Rappler.com

Gavina all praises for rookie Mamuyac: 'Norwood, Ibañes put together defensively' - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – For Chris Gavina, Gian Mamuyac is “hands down” the best two-way rookie he has coached.

Gavina compared Mamuyac to two Rain or Shine greats after the former Ateneo standout played a crucial role in snapping their six-game skid in the PBA Philippine Cup with a 96-86 win over NLEX.

Mamuyac finished with 15 points, 3 assists, and 2 steals as the Elasto Painters stayed alive in playoff contention with a 2-6 record.

“On the defensive end, you can pretty much say he is like Jireh (Ibañes) and Gabe (Norwood) put together,” said Gavina of Mamuyac.

Ibañes and Norwood – both Rain or Shine lifers – each won a Defensive Player of the Year plum and have nine All-Defensive First Team selections between them.

Mamuyac, though, showed he is more than just a defensive cog as he displayed his marksmanship from long distance, knocking down 4 of his 6 three-point attempts.

His last triple closed all doors on a Road Warriors comeback as he gave the Elasto Painters a 93-82 lead with less than four minutes left.

“[Gian] has this unique ability to create shots for himself on the offensive side,” Gavina said.

Rain or Shine picked Mamuyac at fifth overall in the previous draft and Gavina knew right away that he has a “special” player at his disposal.

Mamuyac, after all, came from a winning program as he captained a formidable Ateneo Blue Eagles squad that just fell short of a four-peat in the UAAP.

“His captain class reveals itself at practice, the way he carries himself, it carries over to his teammates,” Gavina said.

“I’m extremely ecstatic I’m getting this opportunity to coach this young man and really pave the future for Rain or Shine.” – Rappler.com

Relive Ricky Turcios' Wild Ride On The Return Of The Ultimate Fighter - UFC

An epic battle and epic war was exactly what Turcios got when he collided with Hiestand at UFC Fight Night: Barboza vs Chikadze on August 28, 2021.

Hiestand was able to find early success with his grappling, getting Turcios to the floor on multiple occasions. Turcios was able to get back to his feet each time and pepper Hiestand with shots. Turcios also took Hiestand down and was able to cut his foe. It was a solid and competitive first round.

Each fighter was able to secure a takedown in the second frame, with some wild scrambles ensuing. With each fighter trading moments of control, it was anyone’s game heading into the third – a place where Turcios has excelled throughout the tournament.

Turcios found his mark and was able to drop Hiestand early in the third, but Hiestand turned the exchange into a takedown. It was a battle that ended up against the fence, with Turcios landing the more precise shots and throwing all the way until the final horn.

The bout was so good that it was voted as one of the best fights to ever happen inside the UFC APEX, but, in the end, Turcios’ third round gave him the edge.

Turcios took the bout via split decision and was crowned The Return of The Ultimate Fighter bantamweight winner.

Turcios to UFC.com after defeating Hiestand: “Call me The Ultimate Fighter champion forever now. I will take this one to the grave. Etch me in UFC history. For real.”

FAST FACTS: Gilas Pilipinas teams at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2022 - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines will be well-represented at the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup 2022 as both men’s and women’s teams will be deployed at the regional tournament this July 6 to 10 in Singapore.

Here are some fast facts about the tournament, the teams involved, and the players the country is sending to represent the flag.

TNT set to detonate on Asian stage

Over at the men’s division, Gilas Pilipinas is sending the core of the PBA 3×3’s title-winning TNT Tropang Giga composed of Samboy de Leon, Lervin Flores, and Almond Vosotros, while Purefoods’ Joseph Eriobu rounds out the quartet.

Ranked together in the 10 to 13 spots in the Philippines’ FIBA 3×3 rankings, the Gilas men representatives are hoping to give Asia’s best squads a good run for their money, and possibly stage some upsets.

Reliable reinforcements

Whether in women’s 5-on-5 or 3×3, the Philippines can’t go wrong with leaning on its longtime national team stalwarts Afril Bernardino, Khate Castillo, Katrina Guytingco, and Camille Clarin.

Although Guytingco is the only high-ranking 3×3 player in the group at ninth in the country’s list, Bernardino, Castillo, and Clarin are still three of the best Filipina ballers today, and will bank on their cohesion and shooting prowess to lift Gilas to victory.

Mongolian mastery

For both men’s and women’s divisions, Mongolia has been pegged as the country to beat alongside other basketball behemoths like China, Japan, and Australia.

Fortunately, the Philippine teams will not run to any brick walls just yet as the men’s team will face Jordan and Indonesia first in the group stage, while the women’s team will face Jordan as well, along with Thailand – all on Thursday, July 7.

Format

Unlike 5-on-5 tournaments, the 3×3 Asia Cup will have no classification rounds, and will determine rankings based on points, which means that the Philippines will have fewer chances to show off and rack up personal and federation points.

All games past the group stages until the finals will be knockout matches, thus making winning imperative from the get-go for both Gilas teams in order to go deep in the tournament.

The Pinoy squads in Singapore will certainly need all the support they can get from their rabid fan bases to keep their momentum high. – Rappler.com

Juan GDL, Carino team up in D-League; Abando, Phillips headline rosters - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – Juan Gomez de Liano and Kemark Carino are back home from their Japan B. League stints and are set to team up with Marinerong Pilipino in the 2022 PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup starting Thursday, July 7, at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Gilas Pilipinas prospects headline a Skippers roster made up mostly of Mapua Cardinals stalwarts like Warren Bonifacio and Paolo Hernandez, who recently reached the NCAA Season 97 finals before being swept by Letran.

The Knights, under their usual Wangs name in the D-League, are also making a comeback as one of the squads to watch in the eight-team field with MVP Rhenz Abando and star guard Fran Yu still leading the way.

Brent Paraiso, Mark Sangalang, and Pao Javillonar are also set to return for Letran, which recently won back-to-back NCAA titles at the expense of the aforementioned Mapua squad.

La Salle, meanwhile, will have a severely weakened guard rotation as the Green Archers’ top guards Evan Nelle, Mark Nonoy, and Schonny Winston will all miss action due to personal reasons and academic commitments.

Assistant coach Gian Nazario bared the development at the Tuesday, July 5, edition of the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum.

The Archers, who recently lost veterans Justine Baltazar and Kurt Lojera due to graduation, are now looking to heavily bank on UAAP Season 84 Mythical Five member Michael Phillips to carry the load on both ends of the court.

Gilas project Kevin Quiambao will also make his debut for the seniors team after sitting out the last UAAP season.

Over to other teams, UST continues its development with this tournament, and is still bannered by Gilas call-up Sherwin Concepcion, UAAP Season 84 revelation Nic Cabanero, and other core players like Paul Manalang and Bryan Santos.

Head coach Jinino Manansala, however, will not oversee the rest of the Growling Tigers’ process as he is currently back with his old team St. Clare – also one of the favorites for the Aspirants’ Cup.

Winners of five straight titles in the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU), the Saints are bannered by rookie-MVP Johnsherick Estrada and foreign student-athlete Babacar Ndong.

CEU, AMA, and San Sebastian make up the rest of the field, and are also expected to put up tough, physical fights against the league’s top teams.

Letran and St. Clare figure in a clash of champions to open the tournament on Thursday, 10:30 am, while CEU and AMA wrap up the early double-header at 12:30 pm. – Rappler.com
