Kevin Durant trade request: Key factors at play and likely destinations for Brooklyn Nets superstar - Sky Sports

Last night's trade request by Kevin Durant sent the NBA world into a frenzy.

He is certainly one of the hottest trade assets ever available on the trade market, and it's going to be fascinating to see where he ends up.

This is a 12-time All-Star and six-time All-NBA first team selection, we are talking about – a man who averaged 29.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game last season on 51.8 per cent shooting from the field. Obviously, he will be coveted by just about anyone.

When the news emerged last night, most of the NBA world was shocked. I wasn't. My overall reaction to this is: I'm not surprised. I've been saying this was a possibility for months now.

You've got to feel bad for Ben Simmons, though. He's not even played one game with them before they all ran away. I'm sure Joel Embiid is somewhere grinning.

It's one of the bigger offseason narratives in recent memory, but here are the key things to bear in mind surrounding any potential trade for Durant – a player who has the potential to transform any franchise in the NBA.

With that in mind, let's take a look at things in more detail...

Key aspects to bear in mind around KD trade

Where it all went wrong...

I told you guys when the playoffs began that they would lose in the first round quite easily to the Boston Celtics. The Nets are historically not a great organisation. Steve Nash was out-coached by his former assistant, and Sean Marks, the general manager, did not assemble a roster that works. James Harden, who they traded almost all of their future draft picks to acquire, James Harden had the foresight to see all of this and jump to the Philadelphia 76ers earlier this year.

Defensively, there's nothing there. They thought Andre Drummond would save them. Nope. Kyrie Irving barely played all season long - no matter how talented you are, team chemistry is a delicate thing.

Kevin Durant is a hooper. He loves to play basketball. That's what he wants to do. He wants to play basketball and win. The Nets put him with a bunch of guys who were specialised in either offense or defense, no two-way players like KD. For the former MVP, it's very simple and the chemistry was clearly not there because the rest of the team clearly don't have the same mindset as Kevin Durant.

Why Kyrie opted in...

Brooklyn Nets' Kyrie Irving, right, and Kevin Durant celebrate after a basket during the second half of an NBA basketball game against the Indiana Pacers at the Barclays Center, Sunday, Apr. 10, 2022, in New York.
Image: Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving, right, and Kevin Durant celebrate after a basket during a game against the Indiana Pacers at the Barclays Center earlier this year

Kyrie Irving opted in, okay, and they spun it like 'Oh, it's my obligation to play with KD'. Don't get it twisted, Kyrie only opted in because he couldn't get that kind of money anywhere else. That's why Kyrie Irving opted in. So the first thing to consider when looking at the ripple effect of this is that I wouldn't be surprised if Kyrie gets traded. Whether it's in a package with Durant, or separately, the Nets won't look to build around the unpredictable point guard.

What the Nets are looking for...

Another thing to remember is the Nets don't own the majority of their future draft picks. They gave them almost all of them to Houston. They gave all their draft picks away unprotected, so they need some if they're going to rebuild. That is unless they're going to trade KD straight up for a star, which seems unlikely. So they need young talent, and as many draft picks as humanly possible.

Likeliest destinations for Durant

Kevin Durant scores a career-high 55 points in a loss against the Atlanta Hawks, showcasing the skills that any prospective trade partner may benefit from

Phoenix Suns

The reason why I've been telling people Phoenix is because I heard some whispers – and it makes sense, because they need KD to take them over the top to become a championship team, someone to stop Chris Paul from perennially choking.

They can give Deandre Ayton (former No 1 pick in the draft), Mikal Bridges (one of the league's best defenders) and Cam Johnson (an elite shooter) to make up the salary, and all of the future draft picks. I think that Bridges has a lot more potential that people think. People just see him as a 3-and-D guy, I think he can be a lot better than that. I'm not saying he's gonna be superstar, but I think he's better than the fit at Phoenix is showing – and I think Ayton, who is already unhappy there, could do a lot more than his role has allowed him. So you look at that, and that's the most obvious destination.

Miami Heat

Then you look at Miami. From what I hear, they can't actually trade for him due to some complication with Bam Adebayo's contract – the Nets can't have Simmons and Adebayo on the roster at the same time – there'll be a way for Pat Riley to navigate that, but I'm not sure what kind of other assets they possess to do a deal. I don't know if the Nets will be really that high on Tyler Herro. It'll be interesting to see how hard both sides would want to push in this potential deal.

New Orleans Pelicans

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Ahead of his side's Play-In game, former No 1 overall pick up Zion Williamson, threw down a 360 windmill to demonstrate the kind of force he will yield when he returns from a long injury lay-off

One of the other teams I like the look of is the Pelicans. I think it'll be Phoenix, but I like New Orleans who have got a bunch of young players, picks, and the right kind of pieces to do a deal. They could move Zion Williams or they can move Brandon Ingram. When those two guys are healthy, they are a lot better than the players other teams could offer.

Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies have young players, future picks, and their financial books are in good shape. They have such a strong young core so the timeline may be different, but that would certainly be a very interesting move.

Golden State Warriors

Now, they've got the young players, the future picks, and the salary, but I don't know how likely it is given how good they were this season – they won a championship – and how valuable Andrew Wiggins was to them along with the other younger guys. What will it say about the organisation if they trade a group of champions for a player who walked out on the team? I don't know if they'll break that current group up, but it would be peak irony.

OKC Thunder

Then of course, when we're talking about draft picks, the OKC Thunder, have got all the draft picks in the world. So then there's that option. Also ironic, given KD's tenure and departure from the Thunder.

Other teams to look out for?

If they can't get a star straight up, they're going to have to rebuild. They will have no choice.

What NBA Twitter wants to happen is Anthony Davis for Kevin Durant. Now that could happen if AD wasn't injured all the time, but the Nets won't bite on that deal.

I'm expecting everyone to get traded out of Brooklyn, they've got to go into rebuild, and they've got to recoup the draft assets that they've lost. Also, keep an eye out for the Mavericks, trying to get into the mix to trade for Kyrie Irving now that it's looking like Jalen Brunson signs in New York.

Kaya vs Bali United prediction, preview, team news and more | AFC Cup 2022 - Sportskeeda

Kaya FC–Iloilo will clash with Bali United in Group G’s third matchday of the AFC Cup at Kapten I Wayan Dipta in Bali on Thursday.

Kaya lost their first two matches of the series, falling to Visakha FC 2-1 and to Kedah Darul Aman 4-1. The Filipino side currently sit bottom of Group G with zero points ahead of their crucial game against Bali United.

The Mighty Kaya are yet to win the AFC Cup. Their best performance so far in the competition was a round-of-16 finish in 2016. Kaya face an uphill battle as they go head-to-head with Bali United. Bali are two places ahead and will be playing in front of their home fans.

Bali United opened their campaign with a 2-0 win over Malaysian side Kedah Darul Aman. However, they suffered a 5-2 setback at the hands of Visakha FC in the follow-up game. With three points in stock, the Indonesian side hold second spot in Group G and could possibly play in the zonal semi-finals.

The Serdadudadu Tridatu have reached the group stage twice – in 2018 and 2020 - but are yet to clinch the ultimate prize. Kaya appear not to be the strongest challenge, but Bali United will be cautious to avoid unpalatable surprises.

Thursday’s meeting is the penultimate matchday of the group, which will determine the fate of almost every member. Second-placed Bali United have more at stake being the host team.

Together in victory, even more so in defeat. One more game to go. One more chance to give it everything we've got. 🟡⚫

Kaya vs Bali United Prediction

Bali United are closely followed by Kedah Darul Aman, who are third-placed with three points as well. Any slip-up would blow the race for the second spot wide open. Serdadu Tridatu would not want that, especially not in front of their own fans. They will look to strengthen their position while eying the top spot. Kaya have less pressure on their shoulders as they have little to lose.

Bali United are expected to win as they boast a stronger team and their fighting spirit will be high in the presence of their home fans.

Prediction: Kaya 1-3 Bali United

Report: Knicks trading Nerlens Noel, Alec Burks to Pistons - NBA.com

Nerlens Noel and Alec Burks will join a young Pistons squad featuring nine players with less than three seasons in the NBA.

The Knicks are trading center Nerlens Noel and guard Alec Burks to the Pistons to free up money in pursuit of Mavericks free agent Jalen Brunson, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Tuesday.

Detroit will also receive second-round picks in 2023 and 2024 and $6 million.

Burks, an 11-year veteran, averaged 11.7 points and 3.0 assists for the Knicks last season, while Noel put up 3.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.2 blocks. Burks joins a crowded Pistons backcourt brimming with young prospects, including rookie standout Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey, the No. 5 pick in this year’s Draft.

The Knicks, who also traded Kemba Walker on Draft night, have been widely linked to Brunson, an unrestricted free agent coming off a breakout season in which he averaged 16.3 points and 4.8 assists per game for the Mavericks.

Chess

The 2022 Candidates Tournament played in Madrid, Spain continues its course in search of a challenger for Magnus Carlsen, the world champion. Here you will find the dates of round 10 and the standings after 9 rounds.

The most relevant game of round 9 was the one played by the two best players in the tournament so far: Ian Nepomniachtchi and Fabiano Caruana. The Russian played a Petroff defense, without a doubt a risky decision, since, although it is a solid defense, the American is one of the greatest specialists in that defense and of course he would know how to play against it. In fact, at some point he was better, but he couldn't take advantage of it and in the end the result was a draw.

As mentioned before, this game was the most relevant, but not even close to the most interesting especially considering that there were three games that ended in victories in this round. The first of them involves the other American player in the tournament, Hikaru Nakamura, although sadly for him it was not good news: he was defeated by Teimour Radjabov.

Alireza Firouzja finally came out of the bottom of the standings beating Richard Rapport, whose performance has been quite irregular during the tournament. The remaining game was the victory of the Chinese Ding Liren against the Polish Jan-Krzysztof Duda, who with this defeat is last in the standings with a performance that so far has been a real disappointment.

The next round will take place on Wednesday, June 29 at 9 AM (ET).

2022 NBA draft: Tari Eason, who could be the Scottie Barnes of this class, can 'definitely see the comparisons in our games' - Yahoo Philippines News

NEW YORK — This time last year, Tari Eason was in the middle of making a decision that would change the trajectory of his career. After a disappointing freshman season at Cincinnati, where he averaged only 7.3 points and 5.9 rebounds in 18 minutes, Eason decided to enter the transfer portal and eventually landed at LSU.

At the time, Will Wade had sent only three players to the NBA draft (most notably Cam Thomas to the Brooklyn Nets at No. 27 in 2021), but Eason liked the freedom the offense provided and the idea of playing in a new conference.

"There was a learning curve and it was a new team, new season, new league and I was just adjusting to everything," Eason told Yahoo Sports. "Through that, I just got more comfortable in the game and that's when things just started to open up."

Halfway through the season, Eason emerged as one of the best defenders in college basketball with his 6-foot-8 frame and 7-foot-2 wingspan and his ability to effectively guard all five positions. NBA scouts started taking note. During the second half of the season, Eason began to consistently show up as a first-round prospect in mock drafts.

"To be honest, I couldn't imagine I'd be here a year ago," Eason told Yahoo Sports. "I envisioned myself getting drafted and having my dreams come true. I just didn't know when. So for me to put a date on it, or think a year later I'd be in this position, I definitely didn't think that would happen."

It did happen, and Eason is a few short hours from realizing his dream.

Tari Eason of the LSU Tigers brings the ball up court during the game against the Kentucky Wildcats at Rupp Arena on Feb. 23, 2022 in Lexington, Kentucky.
LSU's Tari Eason has a wide 2022 NBA draft range, and has had his game compared to 2021-22 NBA Rookie of the Year Scottie Barnes. (Michael Hickey/Getty Images)

The 2022 NBA draft is top heavy with the same four players projected at the top all season long: Jabari Smith, Chet Holmgren, Paolo Banchero and Jaden Ivey. Picks five through nine have some stability and value in them, mixed with a few players with high upside and others who have played consistently.

Starting at pick No. 10 is where it turns into the Wild Wild West. After watching Eason all season and seeing his measurements and how he projects at the next level (numbers and tangibles that are very similar to 2021-22 Rookie of the Year Scottie Barnes), it's hard to imagine a player like Eason falling out of the lottery.

During his one year at Florida State, Barnes averaged 10.3 points, four rebounds and 4.1 assists in 24 games off the bench. Eason, in his sophomore season, averaged 16.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and shot 52% from the field.

"I definitely see the comparisons in our games," Eason told Yahoo Sports. "Scottie [Barnes] is a great player in his own right, but we have a similar height, similar wingspan, similar playing style. Anytime you can be compared to a Rookie of the Year is a blessing, and I guess one of the differences scouts are looking at is I'm a little older. That's it."

One of the biggest knocks and an area for concern for scouts in Eason's game is his 3-point shot and creating for himself off the dribble. The 6-foot-8 wing averaged only 36% from 3-point range, attempting 2.4 threes per game. There were similar concerns surrounding Barnes, who connected on only 27.5% of his 3-point attempts during his freshman season.

It's obvious Eason is tremendous in transition, ranking in the 90th percentile and averaging 1.4 points per possession in the open court, according to Synergy Sports. And, no surprise here, Barnes had similar numbers in transition, averaging 1.3 points per possession two seasons ago.

On the defensive side, Eason was one of the best rim protectors coming off the wing. He would do it all from chasing down blocks from behind in transition, going toe-to-toe with players bigger off the switch, and sliding with guards in the lane when attempting to blow by him. Eason averaged over one block per game, but the defensive impact he had every night with his 7-foot-2 wingspan gave a glimpse of what he could be at the next level.

"Blocking shots has always been a part of my game and I've always been someone that's prided myself in my defense and playing hard," Eason told Yahoo Sports. "Even when I wasn't super athletic, I always played hard and as I got athletic and as I got taller, all these things began to grow."

The way Eason played his sophomore year and the athletic upside he showed late in the season is on par with where Barnes was projected before the draft. However, Eason, two years older than where Barnes was at this point last year, isn't getting the same hype or buzz. Barnes was a projected top-five pick; Eason is slated in the late teens to early 20s.

"I definitely think I'm a sleeper in this draft and only time will tell," Eason told Yahoo Sports. "I can only control the things I can control, and there are certain things that go into every decision in the draft."

Eason understands that his 3-point shot is giving teams pause and the way he can create for others off the wing in the offense, but he's using all feedback as motivation to get better.

"I've improved my 3-point shooting, as scouts have seen, from last year to this year and I've gotten better year over year," Eason told Yahoo Sports. "It's a part of my game I've continued to work on and develop, and if it's the biggest concern that people have then let me say this, every player has to have a thing so I'm just going to keep working."

For his part, Eason did everything he could to prove what kind of player he is and earn his spot on a roster, working out for 12 teams during the pre-draft process: Atlanta, Minnesota, Charlotte, New York, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, Washington, Chicago, Portland, San Antonio, Memphis and Houston. His draft range Thursday night is anywhere from six to 22.

"The feedback I got during workouts was great," Eason told Yahoo Sports. "They definitely see my ability to guard and switch on every player, whether that's the smaller guards or bigger players. I think my versatility shines through and they see my length and what I'm able to do to contain the ball on the defensive end and guard every position."

There's a lot that goes into team's draft boards and who they like, but there's always one player in the draft who falls a little bit and is a star one or two years later. With Eason's size, athleticism and untapped potential, he could be the hidden gem in the draft and, if history repeats itself with a player we saw rise this year in Barnes, Eason could be in the conversation for Rookie of the Year with his knack for creating defense into offense.

"I really try to not let anyone outwork me," Eason told Yahoo Sports. "Anyone who's ever been around me knows my work ethic is always something I take pride in. Thursday night, I'm going to be ready to apply that work ethic to any team that drafts me, no matter where I land. Friday morning, it's an even playing field. Zero-zero between everyone. And that's when the real work begins."

Orlando Magic make Duke's Paolo Banchero No. 1 pick in 2022 NBA draft - ESPN.co.uk

NEW YORK -- After months of speculation, Duke's Paolo Banchero was a surprise selection by the Orlando Magic with the top overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft on Thursday night at Barclays Center.

Gonzaga center Chet Holmgren was taken second by the Oklahoma City Thunder, and Auburn forward Jabari Smith Jr. went No. 3 overall to the Houston Rockets.

In the weeks leading up to the draft, Smith had been widely expected to land the top selection. But the Magic turned things upside down by taking Banchero, who sported a bright purple suit with sequins, along with even brighter shoes, as he took to the stage and shook hands with NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

"I had a feeling, from the information I was being told, that it was just kind of up in the air," Banchero told ESPN of going first. "Orlando wasn't really sure yet, and just to be ready for whatever.

"I didn't find out, though, that I was actually getting picked until about 20 seconds before the commissioner got on the stage. I didn't even have time to really think about it or anything. It just kind of happened. I can't believe it, but I'm ready. I'm ready."

Rounding out the draft's top five were Iowa forward Keegan Murray, who went to the Sacramento Kings with the fourth pick, and Purdue guard Jaden Ivey, whom the Detroit Pistons drafted fifth overall.

The 6-foot-10 forward from Duke averaged 17.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game across 39 games for the Blue Devils, who reached the Final Four before losing to their forever rivals in North Carolina. Banchero, who might be the most NBA-ready prospect in this draft, will now be looked to as the anchor of Orlando's nascent rebuild, which includes guards Jalen Suggs and Cole Anthony, forwards Franz Wagner and Jonathan Isaac and center Wendell Carter Jr.

While Banchero was a surprise at No. 1, Holmgren was always expected to go to Oklahoma City with the second pick. A 7-footer from Gonzaga, Holmgren flashed a wide array of skills in his lone season in college, averaging 14.1 points on 60 percent shooting overall and 39 percent from 3-point range while grabbing 9.9 rebounds and blocking 3.7 shots in 26.9 minutes across 32 games.

Oklahoma City. now has an interior anchor to go with its promising young backcourt of rising star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Australian Josh Giddey, the sixth overall pick in last year's draft and a first team All-Rookie selection.

Smith, a sweet-shooting 6-foot-10 forward, averaged 16.9 points and 7.4 rebounds while shooting 42 percent from behind the 3-point arc.

After drafting Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, Josh Christopher and Usman Garuba in the first round of last year's draft, the Rockets -- who also entered the evening with the 17th selection -- continued their rebuild in the wake of moving on from franchise icon James Harden at the start of the 2021-22 season by selecting Smith.

Murray had a breakout sophomore season at Iowa, averaging 23.5 points and 8.7 rebounds while shooting 55.4 percent from the field and 39.8 percent from 3-point range. He will now join a Kings team that is trying to end a 16-year playoff drought and retool itself around guard De'Aaron Fox and big man Domantas Sabonis under new coach Mike Brown.

Ivey, who had publicly said going to Sacramento wouldn't be the "worst" thing to happen to him, will team him with last year's top overall pick, Cade Cunningham, in the Pistons backcourt. Like Murray, Ivey had a breakout sophomore season, averaging 17.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists at Purdue while showing off breathtaking athleticism and straight-line speed.

Also Thursday night, Arizona's Bennedict Mathurin went sixth to the Indiana Pacers, the Portland Trail Blazers took Kentucky's Shaedon Sharpe at No. 7 and Dyson Daniels of the G League Ignite went No. 8 to the New Orleans Pelicans.

FINA explains non-inclusion of Chloe Isleta in World Championships - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – Swimming’s world governing body FINA confirmed that Chloe Isleta did not meet the conditions as the Philippine Swimming Inc. (PSI) excluded her in its roster for the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

PSI sent only Jasmine Alkhaldi, Miranda Renner, and Jonathan Cook to the biennial meet after being forced to leave out Isleta – the Philippines’ lone gold medalist in the previous Southeast Asian Games – due to FINA rules.

Isleta originally cracked the World Championships lineup that included Alkhaldi, Renner, and Luke Gebbie as the three achieved the standard entry time.

FINA rules state that countries which have three swimmers who attained the standard entry time have the option to include one additional swimmer, “provided that both genders are represented.”

This explained the addition of Isleta, who did not meet the standard entry time in her event but got in due to her FINA points.

But with Gebbie withdrawing from the World Championships due to an injury, PSI needed to remove Isleta as only two swimmers – Alkhaldi and Renner – who accomplished the standard entry time remained.

For countries with one or two swimmers who achieved the standard entry time, FINA allows a maximum entry of four athletes – two male and two female.

PSI president Lailani Velasco requested for an exception to have three female and one male to represent the Philippines in the World Championships only to be denied by FINA.

“FINA rules must be strictly respected by all national federations,” said FINA sports director Pere Miro in a letter dated June 18.

“Therefore, with only two athletes who qualified with a standard entry time for the FINA World Championships 2022, the maximum number of swimmers allowed is two male athletes and two female athletes.

“It is not possible to have three female athletes and one male athlete.”

With the two female spots occupied, PSI instead included Cook based on universality with the highest FINA points.

Alkhaldi and Renner will compete in the women’s 50m freestyle and women’s 50m butterfly, respectively, while Cook will take part in the men’s 200m breaststroke. – Rappler.com

Pure dominance.

National University (NU) defeated De La Salle University (DLSU), 25-15, 25-15, 25-22, in Game Two of the Finals to complete a 16-0 sweep in Season 84 and end its 65-year title drought in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women's volleyball on Tuesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

The Lady Bulldogs are the first to sweep their way to the UAAP women's volleyball championship since Ateneo did it in 2015.

Alyssa Solomon led the way with 18 points on 15 attacks and three blocks for NU, which won its first title in women's volleyball since 1957.

Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player Bella Belen put up 16 points on 13 attacks and three blocks.

Finals MVP Cess Robles tallied 15 digs on top of six points, while Camilla Lamina tossed 14 excellent sets.

Jen Nierva logged 19 excellent digs and 10 excellent receptions.

"We just took it one game at a time. We did not notice that the first round (sweep was over), second round (sweep was over), Finals Game One and this one," said Lady Bulldogs head coach Karl Dimaculangan.

La Salle had a good start, leading NU by four, 10-6. From there, however, the Lady Bulldogs asserted their dominance to win the set.

The Lady Spikers showed some life in the third set, taking a 20-17 lead after an ace from Matet Espina.

But the Lady Bulldogs, most of whom came from NU's girls high school volleyball team, proved to be steadier down the stretch as they unleashed an 8-2 run capped by, ironically, former NU girls player Thea Gagate of La Salle, whose service error sealed the championship for NU.

Gagate and Alleiah Malauan paced the Lady Spikers with eight and seven points, respectively.

Justine Jazareno tallied 15 excellent digs and nine excellent receptions for DLSU.

Japan capitalise on Koga's excellence to claim fifth VNL win | volleyballworld.com - Volleyball World

A tight battle in the second set led to a 15-15 level. A very long rally, filled with plenty of solid blocking and spectacular digging, was finally finished off by Poland’s Zuzanna Gorecka with a kill for 16-15. A similar rally followed to give Poland a two-point lead, but it was now time for Koga to shine. The Japan star made a fantastic run of four points in a row – a cross-court spike, an ace and two back-row pipes – to give her team a 19-17 lead. The captain scored eight times in the set, including another cross-court kill for the set point, which Kotona Hayashi immediately converted to a 25-21 set win with an off-the-block hit.

Dela Rosa game-winner lifts Magnolia past NorthPort for breakthrough win - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – Calvin Abueva carried the scoring load and Rome dela Rosa hit the game-winner as Magnolia staged an 80-77 escape over NorthPort in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday, June 15.

Dela Rosa drained a wide open three-pointer from the left wing off a Jio Jalalon assist with six ticks left to help the Hotshots crack the winning column and avoid a horrendous 0-3 start.

Missing all of his first seven field goals, Dela Rosa delivered when it mattered most as they stymied the streaking Batang Pier, who absorbed their first loss after winning their first two matches.

Abueva rose to the occasion for his ailing teammates, churning out 23 points and 12 rebounds, including a tough layup in the final 40 seconds that knotted the score at 77-77.

NorthPort wasted its chances in the endgame as Kevin Ferrer bungled his two free throws with the game tied at 77-77 and Arwind Santos muffed the potential game-tying triple after that clutch Dela Rosa bucket.

Still not at tip-top shape after sitting out their previous game due to back spasms, Paul Lee still made his presence felt for Magnolia with 12 points and 4 assists.

Santos paced the Batang Pier with 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

The Scores

Magnolia 80 – Abueva 23, Lee 12, Dionisio 12, Jalalon 8, Sangalang 8, Barroca 8, Dela Rosa 3, Wong 3, Corpuz 2, Reavis 1, Zaldivar 0.

NorthPort 77 – Santos 18, Malonzo 15, Sumang 15, Bolick 13, Calma 7, Balanza 4, Ferrer 3, Vigil 2, Ayaay 0, Dela Cruz 0, Javier 0.

Quarters: 21-17, 42-33, 57-55, 80-77.

AFC Asian Cup 2023 Qualifiers: India top Group D after win vs Hong Kong - Olympics

The Indian men’s football team beat Hong Kong 4-0 in its third and final Group D match of the AFC Asian Cup 2023 Qualifiers third round at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Tuesday.

Anwar Ali (1’) scored his maiden goal for India while captain Sunil Chhetri (45’) scored at the stroke of half-time. Manvir Singh (84’) and Ishan Pandita (91’) then got on the scoresheet to make it India’s biggest win under coach Igor Stimac, who has been in charge of the team since 2019.

With this win, India, 106th in the FIFA rankings, leapfrogged Hong Kong for the top position in the Group D points table with nine points. Hong Kong, ranked 147th, finished second with six points from three games.

Both India and Hong Kong had already qualified for the AFC Asian Cup 2023 heading into the fixture.

The third round of qualifiers saw 24 teams vie for the 11 spots. The sides were divided into six groups of four teams each with the eventual group winners and five best runner-ups qualifying for next year’s Asian Cup.

Group D hosts India, who went into the match placed behind Hong Kong due to an inferior goal difference, took just 56 seconds to get themselves on the scoresheet.

Anwar Ali pounced on the rebound after Ashique Kuruniyan’s shot was blocked. The young defender calmly lifted the ball over the Hong Kong goalkeeper from the centre of the box and opened the floodgates.

In the 44th minute, Jeakson Singh’s free-kick found an unmarked Sunil Chhetri, who controlled the ball well and beat the goalkeeper to his right. It was the 84th international goal for Sunil Chhetri, courtesy of which, he equalled the tally of legendary Ferenc Puskas of Hungary.

While India took a 2-0 lead into half-time, there was nothing to separate the two sides in terms of shots on goal, corners and ball possession.

Despite the rainy conditions in Kolkata, India pressed high against Hong Kong after the restart, looking for more goals. Both sides, however, looked defensively solid.

In the 84th minute, Brandon Fernandes and Roshan Singh combined well to provide Manvir Singh a chance to score. Manvir Singh placed the ball to the right of the goalkeeper to make it 3-0 for India.

With the game and the top spot firmly assured, India went full throttle and kept attacking Hong Kong for the remainder of the match.

Manvir Singh then turned provider for Ishan Pandita for India’s fourth goal in added time with a clean cross.

The 2023 edition will be India’s fifth appearance at the AFC Asian Cup. India have played in the continental tournament on four occasions before - 1964, 1984, 2011 and 2019. The team’s best performance was a runners-up finish on their debut campaign in 1964.

At the last edition of the AFC Asian Cup in 2019, India made a promising start but narrowly missed out on a knockout phase spot after conceding a late penalty in their final group game against Bahrain.

Azkals fall short of AFC Asian Cup 2023 spot bid - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Azkals won’t see action in next year’s AFC Asian Cup following a second-place finish in Group B of the qualifying phase.

A massive 4-0 loss versus 100th-ranked Palestine on the final match day of Group B essentially turned out to be the knockout blow for the Azkals as they had to rely on the results of the other teams just to advance to Asia’s prestigious quadrennial tournament.

The world No. 133  Azkals also produced a scoreless draw against Yemen in their first game, then snatched a 1-0 victory over Group B host Mongolia to accumulate 4 points and a +1 goal difference heading into their crucial clash with the group-leading Palestinians.

Palestine, the team that denied the Philippines a spot in the Asian Cup 2014, showed its mastery over the Azkals once again as it cruised to a lopsided blanking and claimed the top seed in Group B.

After the heartbreaking loss, Azkals defender Kenshiro Daniels admitted “the difference in quality was there,” while head coach Thomas Dooley said the team showed “too much respect” to the higher-ranked side.

“Palestine is a great team, a good team,” said the 61-year-old mentor. “They are very strong and I said that before too that whoever thinks we’ll have an easy game against Palestine is wrong, he doesn’t know anything about football.”

The Palestinians completed their campaign with an unblemished record of three wins alongside an impressive three clean sheets.

As the defeat left the Philippines in an uncertain position on Tuesday, the Azkals had to wait for the results of several teams beginning with Yemen in Group B.

Aside from the group topnotchers, only five of the best group runners-up were guaranteed slots to next year’s Asian Cup.

Yemen had a point and a -5 goal difference going into its closing game against Mongolia, but the Yemeni eventually missed the opportunity to overtake the Filipinos in Group B as the Mongolians concluded their qualifying campaign on a high note with a 2-0 victory courtesy of a brace from Ganbayar Ganbold.

It opened the door for the Azkals to stay in the hunt for a ticket to the 18th edition of the quadrennial tournament.

Turkmenistan was the next team the Philippines had to monitor, and luckily for the Azkals, the Turkmen succumbed to Group E winners Bahrain.

Malaysia then capitalized on the fall of Turkmenistan, claiming an Asian Cup seat by finishing second in Group E after a 4-1 triumph over Bangladesh.

With one spot left, the Azkals were hoping for both Kuwait and Indonesia to lose in Group A, but Indonesia generated a massive 7-0 beating of Nepal which ultimately sealed the fate of the Philippines.

Jordan, Indonesia, Palestine, Uzbekistan, Thailand, India, Hong Kong, Bahrain, Malaysia, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyz Republic will now join Japan, South Korea, China, Australia, Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, and Lebanon to make up the 24 participating teams in the Asian Cup 2023.

As for the Philippines, the Azkals must reevaluate their plans moving forward and look for better stability.

The sudden resignation of Scott Cooper two weeks before the tournament left the team without a coach, but immediately reappointed Dooley to call the shots once more.

Should the team opt to stick with Dooley for the long run, it would give him more time to prepare for a tournament and implement his game plan well.

Integrating more youth players to learn from the veterans is also an avenue that the team can explore to strengthen its bid for a second Asian Cup appearance in 2027. – Rappler.com

Cone lauds 'freak of nature' Tenorio for new Iron Man feat - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – LA Tenorio is a freak of nature.

That is how Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone simply put it as Tenorio played his 700th straight PBA game in the Gin Kings’ 85-82 escape over the Blackwater Bossing in the Philippine Cup on Sunday, June 12.

Breaking the record for most consecutive games played previously held by PBA legend Alvin Patrimonio three years ago, Tenorio further cemented his status as the “Iron Man” by logging in 31 minutes.

Tenorio finished with 5 points and 4 assists, the last of which secured the win for Ginebra as he dished a dime to Japeth Aguilar for the go-ahead jumper in the waning seconds.

“He is a freak of nature. Some people just have a certain thing that is different about them,” said Cone, who coincidentally also set a personal milestone by coaching his 1,700th PBA game.

Cone even used NBA star LeBron James and Major League Baseball (MLB) icon Cal Ripken as examples to underline the feat of Tenorio, who is seeing action in his 16th season in the PBA.

Ripken holds the record for most consecutive games played in MLB history of 2,632 outings.

“Those guys are just freaks of nature, they just have a different gene, I think, a different DNA than everybody else. LA has it,” Cone said.

Not normal

Tenorio nearly saw his Iron Man streak come to an abrupt halt when he underwent an appendectomy in 2020 just weeks before the first PBA bubble.

But the 37-year-old veteran kept his record intact and went on to lead the Gin Kings to their first Philippine Cup championship in 13 years as he captured the Finals MVP honors.

“He does not get injured, knock on wood. He had an appendicitis and he had an operation and five days later, he is playing in a basketball game, he is draining his wound while he is playing,” said Cone.

“That is not normal. He is not normal.”

Setting aside the fact that Tenorio is physically gifted, Cone lauded the floor general for his discipline and attention to detail – qualities that worked wonders for his longevity.

“We used to see him…completely submerged up to his neck in ice bath after every practice. I cannot even put my little toe into it and he submerges his own body and sits in there,” Cone said.

“He brings his own food at practice. You never see him going and eating any fast food or anything like that. He really takes care of himself.” – Rappler.com

Amer turnovers cost Blackwater as Ginebra avoids upset ax - Rappler

ANTIPOLO, Philippines – Barangay Ginebra avoided the upset ax against Blackwater thanks to some costly Baser Amer errors and eked out an 85-82 win in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Center here on Sunday, June 12.

Japeth Aguilar hit the go-ahead bucket and Stanley Pringle sank the win-sealing free throws as the Gin Kings inadvertently got help from Amer to open their campaign on a winning note.

The Bossing led 82-81 with under a minute remaining before Amer threw an errant pass that went out of bounds, paving the way for LA Tenorio to locate Aguilar for the jumper that put Ginebra ahead.

Amer then dribbled the ball off his foot in the next play and the Gin Kings regained possession, with Pringle draining his foul shots to secure the victory.

Newly crowned MVP Scottie Thompson powered Ginebra with a near-triple-double of 14 points, 16 rebounds, 9 assists, and 2 steals as he and Christian Standhardinger led their comeback from a 10-point deficit.

Standhardinger scored 15 of his game-high 21 points, including 6 straight in the middle of the fourth quarter that gave the Gin Kings a 79-76 lead with three minutes left.

Blackwater answered with a 6-0 run highlighted by back-to-back Joshua Torralba buckets to take the upper hand, but the Bossing shot themselves in the foot with those Amer turnovers.

Heaving a huge sigh of relief, Ginebra coach Tim Cone admitted they were wary of Blackwater after it pulled off a massive shocker against defending champion TNT in its conference opener.

“Just watching them on video, they’re playing really, really good basketball. You cannot get anything easy from them and they really execute offensively,” Cone said.

“We knew we had to battle and it could end up being harder than we thought. That is a team to reckon with.”

But the Gin Kings’ experience trumped the momentum of the Bossing as Ginebra banked on its old reliables in the win.

Aguilar finished with 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 blocks, while the returning Stanley Pringle – who missed almost the entire Governors’ Cup last season due to a knee injury – tallied 9 points and 12 rebounds.

Tenorio also made his presence felt with 5 points and 4 assists as he notched a new personal milestone by playing in his 700th consecutive PBA game.

Rey Suerte delivered 15 points on top of 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals to lead Blackwater, which fell short of a rare 2-0 start.

Torralba fired 14 points and Amer had 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists.

The Scores

Barangay Ginebra 85 – Standhardinger 21, J. Aguilar 15, Thompson 14, Tolentino 12, Pringle 9, Mariano 6, Tenorio 5, Pinto 3, Caperal 0, Chan 0.

Blackwater 82 – Suerte 15, Torralba 14, Amer 11, Ular 10, Taha 9, McCarthy 9, Sena 9, Ebona 3, Ayonayon 2, Casio 0, Melton 0, Escoto 0, Publico 0.

Quarters: 22-16, 39-39, 61-67, 85-82.

At home: RK Ilagan turns in another clutch game in Antipolo - Rappler

ANTIPOLO, Philippines – There is something about RK Ilagan when playing at the Ynares Center.

Ilagan turned in another clutch performance at the decades-old arena as he towed Converge to its first PBA win in franchise history following an 89-82 overtime victory over Magnolia in the Philippine Cup on Friday, June 10.

Fielded in late by Jeff Cariaso after riding the bench for almost half of the fourth quarter, Ilagan drained a long three-pointer with 3.6 tick left that tied the game at 82-82 and eventually forged an extra period.

Not yet done with his heroics, the Tondo native then opened overtime with a corner triple and fished two offensive fouls from Calvin Abueva and Ian Sangalang that allowed the FiberXers to pull away for good.

The sophomore guard matched his PBA career-high with 14 points on top of 4 rebounds and 2 steals.

“I’m thankful because coach Jeff took a gamble on me,” Ilagan said in Filipino. “He gave me his trust so I needed to repay it.”

The heart-stopping buckets brought back memories of Ilagan sinking his first PBA game-winner, which he also made at the Ynares Center last February 26 during the Governors’ Cup.

In one of its last couple of games before bidding the PBA goodbye, Alaska trailed Meralco in the dying seconds before Ilagan buried a pull-up jumper at the buzzer that catapulted the Aces to a 94-93 win.

“I think it is just coincidence. I just thought of my shot against Meralco to boost my confidence,” Ilagan said.

For Cariaso, giving Ilagan the last shot in regulation proved to be an easy decision, knowing that he can rely on the 5-foot-7 guard to deliver when the game is on the line.

“RK is clutch. He has a big heart. He prepares well. He is a wonderful teammate and you cannot ask anything more from him,” said Cariaso.

With the first win in the books, Converge sets its sights on starting a winning streak as it tangles with defending champion TNT on Sunday, June 12, at the same venue. – Rappler.com

How to stream Warriors at Celtics, NBA Finals Game 4 - Golden State of Mind

The Golden State Warriors are looking to bounce back during their NBA Finals Game 4 matchup against the Boston Celtics on Friday night. The game will be played at 6pm PT in Boston and can be watched on ABC.

The Warriors are coming off a disappointing 116-100 loss on Wednesday night. The Celtics took control from the opening tip, building up a 12-point lead by halftime. The Warriors stormed back in the third quarter to take a brief lead thanks to the shot-making of Stephen Curry who finished with a game-high 31 points. However, every Golden State run was swiftly responded to with a demoralizing run by Boston, culminating in a dominant fourth quarter where they outscored the Warriors, 23-11.

The good news for the Dubs is that they only needed to win one of these games in Boston to regain home court advantage and will have another opportunity to do so tonight. In even better news, the Warriors expect Curry to play on Friday despite a scary injury he suffered in Game 3 during a pileup for a loose ball. This is vital as Golden State is going to need every bit of Curry’s offensive firepower for this must-win matchup.

It should be a fun game. Enjoy the basketball Dub Nation. GO WARRIORS!!!
