PH SEAG winners to pay courtesy call at Malacañang

President Duterte will honor all the Filipino medalists in the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam in a ceremony Tuesday night at the Malacañang Palace.

MB File Photo

Expected to attend are more or less 400 Filipino athletes, coaches and officials who helped the country finish fourth in the biennial meet following a 52-gold, 70-silver and 105-bronze medal harvest.

Reports said the incentives they were due – around P32.4 million in all – will be given in the event scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

Under Republic Act No. 10699, otherwise known as the National Athletes and Coaches Incentives and Benefits Act, an athlete is rewarded P300,000 for every individual gold medal won while a silver and bronze are worth P150,000 and P60,000 each.

There is also that possibility that the Chief Executive could add some monetary bonus the same way he has done in past international events like the Tokyo Olympics, the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games and past SEA Games editions in Manila in 2019 and Kuala Lumpur in 2017.

Of all medal winners, world champion gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo stands to receive the heftiest sum having scooped up a whopping five gold medals and a couple of silver, which were worth around P1.7 million.

The feat in Hanoi was the best finish by the country in the biennial meet outside of the Philippines since winding up second overall in the 1983 Singapore edition.

Host Vietnam grabbed the overall championship after reaping 205 golds, 125 silvers and 116 bronzes. Thailand finished at distant second (92-103-136) followed by Indonesia (69-91-81).

PBA chairman sounds off on player poaching - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – PBA chairman Ricky Vargas blasted agents who poach players as Filipino talents continue to pursue careers in overseas leagues.

The PBA is no longer the only route for top Filipino players after neighboring countries Japan, Taiwan, and Korea opened their doors to career opportunities with more lucrative pay.

“Poaching has been very serious,” said Vargas during the pre-season press conference on Monday, May 30. “We have lost some very good players who did not join the draft or who has been in the draft and left the PBA.”

“I guess it takes a lot from the players to be professional about it, from those poaching them to be professional about it, and from the agents that poached them to be very professional about it.”

Some of the notable players who left the PBA include Kiefer Ravena and Ray Parks, who both made the jump to the Japan B. League.

Ravena joined the Shiga Lakestars despite having a live contract with NLEX, while Parks signed with the Nagoya Diamond Dolphins after his contract with TNT expired.

Drafted by Terrafirma and loaned to Gilas Pilipinas, Jordan Heading went elsewhere by inking a deal with the Taichung Suns of the T1 League in Taiwan.

Potential first-round pick Justine Baltazar is the latest to trek the B. League path as he signed with the Hiroshima Fireflies after pulling out from the PBA Draft.

“We’re learning a lot from the past two years when we lost some of our key players, we’ve learned from that experience, and surprisingly, the PBA stood its ground and the PBA is as successful as it is even without the players that we’ve lost,” Vargas said.

Vargas said the PBA will only work with accredited agents to crack down on player poaching.

“There are agents that go directly to the players who are not even registered agents. Normally a registered agent of the PBA would be more circumspect in the way they manage getting players,” Vargas said.

“What is difficult is agents who do not understand the PBA are just there to make their own money and make off our star players. We’re trying to protect our players from that as well.”

“It is good if these agents that poach and go directly to our players, register themselves with the PBA. This is also for the protection of our players.” – Rappler.com

Novak Djokovic advances at French Open after brief second-set stumble - ESPN

Defending champion Novak Djokovic has reached his record 16th career Roland Garros quarterfinal and could find a familiar foe across the net next: Rafael Nadal.

The No. 1-ranked Djokovic quickly recovered from only the slightest of blips at the start of the second set Sunday and went on to a 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 victory over 15th-seeded Diego Schwartzman of Argentina at Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Djokovic has won all 12 sets he's played so far in this year's tournament and has dropped a total of merely 30 games across the four matches.

He fell behind 3-0 in the second set but grabbed seven games in a row to take that set and a 1-0 lead in the third.

Djokovic has made the quarterfinals in Paris 13 years in a row. He won the title in 2016 and last year, part of his collection of 20 Grand Slam trophies. Only one man has won more -- Nadal, with 21.

And if 13-time French Open champion Nadal wins his fourth-round match against Felix Auger-Aliassime later Sunday, the two longtime rivals would meet each other in the quarterfinals. That would be the 59th head-to-head matchup between Djokovic and Nadal, more than any other two men in the professional era of tennis.

Nadal heads into his match against Auger-Aliassime with 15 quarterfinal appearances at Paris.

NBA team vowed to draft Kai Sotto, says agent - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – Kai Sotto has piqued the interest of NBA teams and at least one has committed to pick up the Filipino star if he stays available in the upcoming draft, his agent Joel Bell said.

Sotto is reportedly scheduled for a dozen of workouts with NBA teams after failing to get an invite for the Draft Combine, where top prospects like Chet Holmgren and Jabari Smith showcased their wares.

“I am strongly convinced, I believe that when he visits NBA teams in person, they’re going to be dazzled,” said Bell in an interview organized by NBA Philippines.

Based on his Instagram, the 7-foot-3 big man has already worked out with two NBA teams, the latest with the Orlando Magic.

The Magic hold the rights for the No. 1 overall pick and will also select at No. 32 and 35 in the second round.

“We have so many teams who want to bring him in for individual workouts and we actually have a commitment from at least one team that said if he stays in the draft, [they’ll] draft him,” Bell said.

Value commodity

For Bell, what separates Sotto from other Asian big men who have made it to the NBA like Zhou Qi and Wang Zhizhi of China is his basketball IQ.

“What the average person does not realize about Kai is he is an unbelievable passer,” Bell said.

“You can run your offense through Kai and that is not something you can say about a lot of frontcourt players in professional basketball. He has got an unbelievable basketball IQ.”

The 20-year-old decided to join the draft after completing his first season in the National Basketball League in Australia, where he averaged 7.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in 15 minutes per game for the Adelaide 36ers.

He is currently ranked No. 49 by Sports Illustrated in its mock draft, although other mainstream sports outlets in the United States do not see Sotto among the 58 players who will hear their names called on draft night.

But Bell begs to differ.

“Diamonds are really expensive because they’e rare. So is Kai. He is going to be a value commodity, he is a valued guy,” Bell said.

Sotto has until June 13 to withdraw from the draft, which will take place in New York on June 23.

“Whether he remains in the draft or does not this year, that is going to be up to Kai and anyone he relies on for advice,” Bell said. – Rappler.com

Boban Marjanovic hilariously imitates Warriors' dancers during Game 5 entrance - NBC Sports

Boban Marjanović could be an in-arena dancer after his NBA playing days are over.

The Dallas Mavericks big man had quite the entrance into Game 5 of the Western Conference finals against the Warriors on Thursday. The 7-foot-3 center saw the Warriors dancers warming up in the hallway while walking into Chase Center, and he did his best at copying their moves.

Dressed in a white shirt, purple and black jacket and jeans, Marjanović's impression wasn’t half bad.

There’s likely never been an NBA cheerleader over seven feet tall, but if anyone could pull it off, it might be Marjanović.

He also earned some high praise from Hall of Famer Chris Mullin on "Warriors Live: Playoff Edition."

While he hasn’t logged any playing time this series, Marjanović is one of the most lovable players in the league, and his Game 5 entrance shows why it’s impossible to dislike this man.

Vanessa Sarno sets new SEAG record in weightlifting - Manila Bulletin

Vanessa Sarno added another gold for the Philippines in weightlifting after a dominant performance in the women’s 71kg event of the 31st Southeast Asian Games Saturday, May 21 in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Vanessa Sarno (center) during the awarding ceremony

The Asian champion registered 239kgs, capping off her feat by setting the SEA Games record in the clean and jerk of the event held at the Hanoi Sports Training and Competition Center.

Her total lift is also a SEAG record.

Thailand’s Khaipandung Siriyakorn settled for silver with 223kgs with Indonesia’s Restu Anggi getting the bronze after compiling 212kgs.

Sarno topped the snatch with a Games record of 104kgs before securing the gold in just her first attempt in the clean and jerk when she lifted 123kgs.

But the 18-year-old was far from satisfied as she lifted 130 and 135 on the next two attempts with ease to complete her impressive debut in the regional meet.

Her triumph gave the Philippines two golds, one silver and one bronze at the conclusion of this year’s SEA Games.

It also made up for the disappointing setback absorbed by Elreen Ando in the women’s 64kg when she settled for a second straight silver.

Ando, 23, failed to lift her final two attempts of 125kgs in clean and jerk to finish with a total of 223kgs.

Vietnam’s Thi Hong Thanh Pham, who beat Ando in the 2019 edition held in Manila, retained the gold after registering 229kgs.

Weightlifting competitions ended with the Philippines getting two golds, one silver and one bronze.

Tokyo Olympics champion Hidilyn Diaz accounted for the other gold after winning the women’s 55kg the other day.

The lone bronze came from 17-year-old Rosegie Ramos in the women’s 49kg last Thursday.

Mary Flor Diaz (women’s 45kg), Fernando Agad (men’s 55kg), Rowel Garcia (men’s 61kg), Nestor Colonia (men’s 67kg), Margaret Colonia (women’s 59kg) and Lemon Denmark Tarro (men’s 73kg) fell short in their medal bids.

2022 NBA Mock Draft: Magic can't pass on Chet Holmgren's skills and size after winning No. 1 pick in lottery - CBS Sports

chet-holgren-usatsi.jpg
USATSI

The full 2022 NBA Draft order is officially set after the lottery's results were revealed Tuesday night in Chicago, lining up the first 14 picks and giving us for the first time a clear picture of the order for all 58 of this year's selections just over one month away from the draft.

There's thus far been no consensus about which prospect will go No. 1 -- or 2 or 3 or 4, for that matter -- but Orlando winning the lottery means for now we've projected a frontcourt player in our latest mock for them. In fact, a big man represents picks No. 2 (to OKC) and No. 3 (to Houston) in this post-lottery mock.

That's subject to change over the next few weeks as more teams dig into this class and make their final evaluations, but Gonzaga 7-footer Chet Holmgren for now remains the No. 1 projected pick after Tuesday's lottery, followed by Jabari Smith and Paolo Banchero before Jaden Ivey -- our No. 1 prospect -- goes off the board at No. 4 to Sacramento.

Will that order change? In the coming weeks, that seems likely. But with the dust still settling, here's the first stab at what all 30 picks in the first round will look like.

Rubilen Amit moves forward to gold-medal round - Manila Bulletin

Rubilen Amit moved one win shy of retaining the gold in the women’s 9-ball singles after a 7-4 win over Vietnam’s Bui Xuan Vang Monday, May 16 in the 31st Southeast Asian Games.

MB File Photo

The multi-time world champion took advantage of some miscues by the hometown bet during their semifinal match held at the Ha Dong Gymnasium in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Amit will face Singapore’s Jessica Tan, who rolled to a 7-2 win over Vietnam’s Bich Tram Nguyen in the other semis match.

Jefrey Roda also advanced to the final of the men’s snooker 6-red singles following a 5-4 victory over Malaysia’s Keen Hoo Moh.

Roda gets his shot at a first-ever gold against Malaysia’s Kok Leong Lim, a 5-2 win over Thailand’s Suchakpee Poomjang.

Both Amit and Roda vie for the gold Tuesday afternoon at the same venue.

Carlo Biado arranged a semifinal showdown with a familiar foe in Singapore’s Aloysius Yapp after his 9-3 win over Myanmar’s Thaw Zin Htet in men’s 9-ball singles.

Biado faces Yapp, the same player he beat during last year’s final of the US Open Pool Championship in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Yapp progressed after defeating Thailand’s Preecha Boonmoung, 9-4.

Johann Chua also reached the men’s 9-ball semis with a 9-4 victory over Dang Thanh Kien.

Francisco dela Cruz beat Thailand’s Sompol Saetang to reach the semis of the men’s 1-carom event.

Biado, Chua, Dela Cruz and Efren “Bata” Reyes, who earlier gained a place in the men’s 1-carom semis, are each assured of going home with at least a bronze medal.

Carlos Yulo, dancesport fuel SEA Games charge as PH wins 10 more golds - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – Carlos Yulo and the national dancesport team powered the Philippines’ biggest gold haul yet in the Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam on Monday, May 16.

Yulo captured two more golds, while dancesport produced four golds as the Philippines bagged 10 gold medals on Monday to remain at third place in the medal table with a total of 30 golds.

Poised to repeat his feat as the Philippines’ most bemedaled athlete in the SEA Games, the pint-sized Yulo wrapped up his men’s artistic gymnastic campaign in style by ruling the vault and horizontal bar.

Yulo fell short of a sweep of his three events on Monday after settling for silver in parallel bars.

Overall, the Olympic gymnast copped five golds and two silvers as he also reigned in the individual all-aroundfloor exercise, and still rings.

Just like the 2019 SEA Games, dancesport proved to be a gold mine for the Philippines.

The Philippines topped the Viennese waltz, five dance, and tango courtesy of the pair of Sean Mischa Aranar and Ana Leonila Nualla.

Aranar and Nualla also won the same three events in the previous SEA Games.

The tandem of Mark Jayson Gayon and Mary Joy Renigen delivered the Philippines’ other dancesport gold on Monday as they defended their crown in slow foxtrot on top of their silvers in quick step and waltz.

Elsewhere, taekwondo jin Jocel Lyn Ninobla and hurdler Clinton Kingsley Bautista also retained their titles in their respective events.

Ninobla captured the Philippines’ first gold in taekwondo as she ruled the women’s individual recognized poomsae for the second straight SEA Games.

The national poomsae squad also struck a pair of silvers behind Janna Oliva, Juvenile Crisostomo, and Justin Kobe Macario (mixed freestyle poomsae) and Patrick King Perez, Raphael Enrico Mella, and Rodolfo Reyes Jr (men’s team recognized poomsae).

Meanwhile, Bautista claimed athletics’ third gold in Vietnam by acing his men’s 110m hurdles title defense.

The Philippines’ other two golds of the day came from bowler Merwin Tan and swimmer Chloe Isleta as they both ended noteworthy droughts in their sports.

More silvers were won in bowling and artistic gymnastics thanks to Marie Alexis Sy (women’s single bowling) and Aleah Finnegan (women’s balance beam).

Hurdler Jelly Dianne Paragile (women’s 110m hurdles), pole vaulter Alyana Nicolas (women’s pole vault), gymnast Juancho Miguel Besana (men’s vault), and mountain biker Jerico Rivera (men’s cross country) all won bronze.

Fencing added a pair of bronzes from Justine Gail Tinio, Wilhelmina Lozada, and Anna Gabriella Guinto (women’s team epee) and Sandro Antonio Sia, Eunice Daniel Villanueva, and John Paul Dayro (men’s team sabre). – Rappler.com

UAAP 84: Cagulangan ends UP's 36-year title drought, Ateneo's dynasty - Tiebreaker Times

After being on the wrong end of fairy tale stories for the past 36 years, University of the Philippines finally achieved the sweetest of victories.

In front of generations of Iskos and Iskas, the Fighting Maroons of Diliman ended Ateneo de Manila University’s dominance in UAAP Men’s Basketball, taking a 72-69 overtime triumph in Game Three of the Season 84 Finals, Friday at SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

And it’s all thanks to one JD Cagulangan.

UAAP-84-MBB-ADMU-vs.-UP-Finals-G3-Joel-Cagulangan-1246 UAAP 84: Cagulangan ends UP's 36-year title drought, Ateneo's dynasty ADMU Basketball News UAAP UP - philippine sports news

The NCAA Season 94 Juniors Basketball Most Valuable Player only played a total of 34 minutes during his rookie year three years ago with De La Salle University. But tonight, with the game tied at 69-all, he uncorked a booming triple with five split seconds left on the clock.

Pandemonium soon erupted afterwards. Half of the 15,132 fans inside the venue exploded in cheers, while the rest broke down in tears.

“Sobrang sarap. Wala akong masabi kasi champion na kami,” said Cagulangan, a native of Butuan, who wound up with 13 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. “Sobrang sarap talaga.”

Finally, the wait has ended for UP.

This is UP’s third title in the league. They won their first title all the way back to the second season of the league; then followed it up 47 years later during season 49.

“I feel very happy right now,” said the soft-spoken first-year head coach of the Fighting Maroons Goldwin Monteverde. “I want to thank the UP community, [and] I also want to thank the Lord God for this championship.”

UP drew first blood in the series with an 81-74 escape; then the defending champions took it back with a 69-66 squeaker. And just like both games, this match-up was an epic.

SJ Belangel, who was putting up a performance for the ages, gave the Blue Eagles a 59-56 lead with 56.7 seconds left in regulation after canning two freebies. The returning CJ Cansino answered right back with a three nine seconds later to knot things up.

Neither the Fighting Maroons nor the Blue Eagles could come up with buckets during the final seconds of regulation. Gerry Abadiano missed a couple of threes, while Ange Kouame could not convert on their side of the court.

In overtime, Belangel took charge, knocked down clutch baskets. He later on found Gian Mamuyac for a corner triple with 1:47 left to give the Blue Eagles a 69-64 lead.

But just as the Fighting Maroons showed all season long, they rose.

Off a Malick Diouf airball, Cagulangan was able to grab the rebound and buried a trey to cut the lead down to two. Misses by Belangel and Kouame then led to a Cagulangan find to Diouf, who slammed the ball down with 38.7 seconds left to tie things up.

Off a timeout, Dave Ildefonso missed on his attempt that led to Cagulangan’s heroics.

Diouf led UP with 17 points, nine rebounds, and three steals. He averaged 12.3 rebounds, 11.7 points, 2.7 steals, 2.0 assists, and 1.0 blocks in the series to win Finals MVP.

Cansino, meanwhile, played his first game since the last game of the elimination round after suffering a knee injury. He added 14 points in just 11 minutes of action.

Meanwhile, Tyler Tio, who wound up with just two points; and Gian Mamuyac, who had 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists, played their final game for Ateneo.

Ildefonso was limited to just two points in 30 minutes of action.

Ateneo solves UP puzzle, forces finals do-or-die - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – Ateneo kept its title defense alive after surviving a pressure-packed endgame.

The Blue Eagles snapped a two-game losing streak against the UP Fighting Maroons in Game 2 of the UAAP finals, 69-66, at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday, May 11.

With the win, the Eagles now have a prime chance to preserve their dynasty and extend their title streak to a four-peat in a do-or-die Game 3 on Friday, May 13, at 6 pm, still at the MOA Arena.

Star center Ange Kouame, fresh off his first MVP award, proved exactly why he was the runaway pick with a near triple-double of 14 points, 14 rebounds, and 8 blocks, while graduating guard Tyler Tio saved his collegiate career with a 14-point spark in just 19 minutes off the bench.

Dave Ildefonso also bounced back from a 6-point, 6-turnover Game 1 outing with 10 points, 8 boards, 4 assists, and 2 steals.

“This series feels like a La Salle series. It doesn’t feel like college basketball. It feels like there’s something else at stake,” said Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin after the nail-biting, season-saving win.

“Tonight, we responded and we did the job in key statistical categories. Everything else in the stat sheet looks good for us.”

Both teams traded leads until the last two, tension-filled minutes, when SJ Belangel made a crucial steal-and-score to put Ateneo up 4 points, 65-61, at the 2:03 mark.

The Eagles then shut the door on the Maroons’ comeback attempt after another swipe and a bucket with 48 ticks left, this time courtesy of graduating guard Gian Mamuyac.

Mythical Five member and Rookie of the Year Carl Tamayo led the way for UP with 18 points, 12 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 block while graduating star Ricci Rivero added 16 points on 7-of-19 shooting plus 4 boards, 4 steals, and 1 block.

Reinforcement Malick Diouf also squeezed out 8 points and 13 rebounds in just 20 minutes of floor time in the loss.

UP had hoped to complete a series sweep against Ateneo as the Maroons bid for their first championship since 1986.

Off a 15-point deficit, 30-45, midway through the third quarter, UP once again rose from the dead with a huge 24-11 run bridging the latter two periods, capped by a huge Tamayo go-ahead triple for the Maroons’ first lead, 57-56, with 5:02 left in regulation.

The Scores

Ateneo 69 – Kouame 14, Tio 14, Ildefonso 10, Mamuyac 7, Belangel 6, Koon 6, Verano 4, Lazaro 3, Andrade 3, Chiu 2, Daves 0.

UP 66 – Tamayo 18, Rivero 16, Cagulangan 8, Lucero 8, Diouf 8, Alarcon 5, Spencer 3, Fortea 0, Abadiano 0, Lina 0.

Quarters: 17-16, 37-28, 49-45, 69-66.

Horford, Tatum help Celtics even series with Game 4 win over Bucks - FOX Sports

Al Horford and Jayson Tatum scored 30 points apiece and led the Boston Celtics’ fourth-quarter comeback in a 116-108 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday night that tied their Eastern Conference semifinal at two games apiece.

The two teams have alternated victories in this best-of-seven series, which continues Wednesday with Game 5 in Boston.

Horford scored 16 points and Tatum 12 in the fourth quarter alone to help the Celtics outscore the defending NBA champion Bucks 43-28 in the final period. Horford’s 30 points were a career playoff-high for the 35-year-old veteran.

Tatum scored eight points and Horford had six during a 14-2 run that put the Celtics ahead for good and gave them a 106-96 advantage with 3:33 left.

The Bucks wouldn’t cut the margin below six the rest of the way.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 34 points, 18 rebounds and five assists for the Bucks.

Tatum had 13 points and five assists while bouncing back from a poor Game 3, when he had 10 points and shot 4-for-19. Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart each added 18 points for the Celtics.

Horford sparked the rally after Boston trailed by 11 late in the third quarter.

The Celtics tied the game when Horford capped a 10-0 run by driving the baseline and dunking while drawing a foul on Antetokounmpo with 9:51 left. Horford, who normally isn’t very expressive on the court, celebrated the dunk by screaming and pumping his fists.

As Horford landed after completing his dunk, his left arm hit Antetokounmpo's face, resulting in a technical foul. Jrue Holiday and Horford each sank free throws to make it 81-all.

Horford was just getting started.

After Milwaukee's Brook Lopez scored the game's next four points to put the Bucks back ahead, the Celtics responded with a 7-0 run and broke an 85-all tie on Horford's 3-pointer with 8:08 left.

The Bucks regained the lead 94-92 when Antetokounmpo hit a driving layup and drew a foul on Horford with 6:02. But after Antetokounmpo missed the free throw, Horford started the 14-2 run that put the Celtics in control.

Horford hit a corner 3-pointer to put the Celtics back ahead with 5:40 left and followed that with a conventional three-point play that made it 98-94 with 5:09 remaining. Later in the spurt, Tatum had a conventional three-point play and a 3-point basket on consecutive possessions.

The Celtics were playing without post player Robert Williams because of soreness in his surgically repaired left knee. The Bucks played a seventh straight game without three-time All-Star forward Khris Middleton due to a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee.

Celtics coach Ime Udoka expressed optimism before Tuesday's game that Williams would be available for Game 4. The Bucks haven't given an indication on when Middleton might return.

Warriors put in near-historic offensive display against Grizzlies as Bucks edge Celtics - CNN International

(CNN)Before Saturday night, the Golden State Warriors' usual offensive fluidity had looked slightly out of sorts.

But that all changed at Chase Center against the Memphis Grizzlies as they put in a near-historic postseason offensive performance in a convincing 142-112 win in Game 3 of their Western Conference semifinal series.
Golden State's three dynamic guards -- Steph Curry, Jordan Poole and Klay Thompson -- combined for 78 points as the Warriors offense lit up the Grizzlies defense.
Curry scored 30, Thompson scored 21 while Poole -- enjoying a breakout season -- added 27 points off of the bench.
In their 142-point performance, the Warriors shot 63.1% from the field -- the second-best in NBA postseason history.
"When we trust each other and we just hit the open man, we've got so much great shooting that we're capable of nights like this," Thompson told the media.
The victory means the Warriors take a 2-1 lead in their best-of-seven playoff series.
Poole dunks the ball against the Memphis Grizzlies.

'Broke the code'

For the Grizzlies, Ja Morant finished as the top scorer with 34 points, and that's despite missing the final six minutes of the game after leaving with an apparent knee injury.
Morant -- coming off a blistering 47-point performance in Game 2 -- exited the game after appearing to tweak his right knee when Poole twisted it as he reached for a loose ball.
With 6:19 left to play in the fourth quarter, Morant could be seen limping to the locker room. Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins said he was undergoing further tests to evaluate the injury.
After the game, Morant tweeted a clip of the incident with the caption: "Broke the code." The tweet was later deleted.
Morant's tweeted appeared to be a reference to Warriors head coach Steve Kerr saying Memphis guard Dillon Brooks "broke the code" during Game 2 when he hit Gary Payton II in the head from behind as Payton II was going up for a lay-up just under three minutes into the game. The Warriors guard suffered a fractured elbow after the incident.
Brooks was then ejected after being assessed a flagrant foul-2 -- described in the NBA rulebook for contact deemed to be "unnecessary and excessive" -- on Payton II and was suspended for Game 3.
Jenkins said Poole had "grabbed his knee and yanked it," but Poole denied he had intentionally hurt his opponent.
"I hit the ball and I was going for the ball. Obviously, you don't want to see anybody get hurt. I'm not even that type of player. I respect everybody," he said.
"Hopefully he gets better, and we can see him out there next game. I don't even play like that for real. That's not my type (of) game."

Down to the wire

The Milwaukee Bucks narrowly beat the Boston Celtics 103-101 in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series, largely in part to a dominant performance from Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Bouncing back from an atypical poor display in Game 2 in Boston, Antetokounmpo scored 42 points, including making the go-ahead basket with 44.3 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
The Celtics had mounted a spirited comeback to set up a thrilling finale, but two-time MVP wrestled control back for the defending NBA champions.
But it was a nervy ending for the Bucks, as Celtics forward Al Horford's tip-in right at the buzzer was ruled to have just come after the clock hit zero, meaning the Bucks have a 2-1 lead in their best-of-seven series.
Antetokounmpo is defended by Horford during the second half of Game 3.
"There's going to be struggles, but at the end of the day, if you keep with it and you stay with it and you stay on course, you're going to succeed," Antetokounmpo said. "If you don't stay on course, you're not going to succeed. It's as simple as that."
Jaylen Brown led the Celtics with 27 points and 12 rebounds while Horford added 22 points and 15 rebounds.
The teams will face off for Game 4 in Milwaukee on Monday night.

Grizzlies anger, protests and bitterness dont stop Ja Morant to be almost out for Game 4 vs. Warriors - Marca English

The Memphis Grizzlies proved during the final month of the regular season that they were not relying on their best player, Ja Morant, to keep them in second place in the Western Conference and in record in the entire NBA, however, the injury absence of the spectacular point guard could prove costly as they head into the playoffs.

Morant went out with a right knee injury midway through the fourth period during Game 3 of the Western Conference Semifinals against the Golden State Warriors and, according to his own coach, his chances of playing in Game 4 are not very good.

Taylor Jenkins' words

"There is a really good chance he (Morant) doesn't play tomorrow," Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins said.

The series has Golden State ahead 2-1 and Game 4 will take place next Monday night in San Francisco, so without Morant, a loss looks more likely, which would put the Grizzlies on the brink of a painful elimination.

Every playoff meeting between these two teams has involved foul play by both teams that has included flagrant fouls, ejections and suspensions, yet Morant's incident, which was against Jordan Poole, has gone unpunished.

Unsuccessful protest by the Grizzlies

Poole appeared to take Morant's knee with 6:19 minutes to play, however, after a complaint from Zach Kleiman, vice president of basketball operations for the Grizzlies to the NBA, the response was negative, because the league considered it a normal basketball play.

"Just trying to be matter of fact here," Jenkins said. "This is what Ja says. This is what our medical team has said after reviewing the play. Ja was playing great and feeling great all game. The grab of the knee is what triggered the potential injury and why we took Ja out of the game. So, nothing has changed from there in terms of that was the play that triggered this."

Soreño, Malaluan star as La Salle thwarts Ateneo in UAAP volleyball - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – La Salle gave reigning UAAP women’s volleyball champion Ateneo a harsh reality check after hacking out a 22-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 win at the Mall of Asia Arena on Thursday, May 5.

Baby Jyne Soreño provided the spark off the bench and delivered a team-high 17 points off 13 attacks, 3 blocks, and 1 ace as the Lady Spikers bounced back from a first-set loss en route to a victorious Season 84 debut.

The Blue Eagles were on their way to nailing a commanding 2-0 set lead after taking a 21-18 edge in the second set behind the big-hitting Faith Nisperos only to fizzle out when it mattered most.

La Salle used a 7-2 run – with two attacks each from Soreño, Jolina dela Cruz, and Alleiah Malaluan – to knot the set score at 1-1.

That proved to be the turning point for the Lady Spikers as they gradually found their groove to claim the next two sets.

“For us, the hardest game is usually the first one and it is very important for us. Our team is new so we needed to make some adjustments,” said La Salle assistant coach Benson Bocboc in a mix of Filipino and English.

Malaluan finished with 15 points behind 13 attacks and 2 aces, while the twin towers of Thea Gagate and Fifi Sharma delivered 11 and 10 points, respectively, in the win.

Nisperos scorched hot for 24 points laced by 19 attacks, 3 aces, and 2 blocks, but lacked sufficient help with only one of her teammates scoring in double figures.

Lyann de Guzman ended up as the only other Ateneo player scoring in twin digits with 11 points.

Nisperos came through in the decisive fourth set, tallying 3 straight points in a 4-0 blitz that forged an 18-18 deadlock.

Coming off a timeout, the Lady Spikers eventually restored order by racking up 3 consecutive points for a 21-18 lead before Malaluan fired back-to-back hits to put her side at match point, 24-20.

Nisperos then committed the last of their 29 errors as La Salle sealed the triumph.

The Lady Spikers also drew strength from veteran Jolina dela Cruz, who netted 9 points. – Rappler.com

Unseeded Wang stuns world champion Yamaguchi to win Asian title - DAWN.com

MANILA: Unseeded Wang Zhiyi withstood a late fightback from world champion Akane Yamaguchi to record a stunning victory in the women’s final of the Badminton Asia Championships on Sunday.

Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia took the men’s title with a 21-17, 23-21 win over Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie — then tore off his sweaty top and hurled it into the Manila crowd in celebration.

China’s Wang, ranked 16th in the world, needed treatment on a back injury but hung on to beat the Japanese top seed and defending champion Yamaguchi 15-21, 21-13, 21-19 in 78 minutes of pulsating action that had the raucous crowd rocking.

“I think it’s something I couldn’t have imagined because before the competition everyone including myself didn’t think that I could achieve these results,” the 22-year-old said after winning the biggest title of her young career.

“This was a very difficult match because my opponent is a world-class athlete, but I think I was in the right frame of mind to battle her.

“My goal is to win every competition so I hope I can keep up with these better performances, be resolute and work harder.”

As in her semi-final win Saturday over second seed An Se-young of South Korea, Wang had to recover from the loss of the opening game.

After levelling the match, the up-and-coming Chinese player looked to be heading for a comfortable victory as she raced into a 16-5 lead in the decider, before nerves and her niggling back kicked in to give Yamaguchi a lifeline.

The Japanese player used all her experience to claw her way back as Wang began to make unforced errors and Yamaguchi levelled at 19-19 after a lung-bursting 30-shot rally.

But Wang, who moments earlier had needed attention from the trainer at the side of the court, summoned up reserves of energy and forced Yamaguchi to go long to set up a first championship point.

Another marathon rally followed, but when Yamaguchi netted, Wang collapsed on her back in exhaustion and elation as she became Asian champion for the first time.

The men’s final was a more straightforward affair with third-seeded Lee mostly in control throughout against Christie, the fourth seed.

Christie fought back in the second game but failed to nail two game points, the 24-year-old Lee sealing the title on his first championship point when his opponent fired wide on a forehand.

The Indonesian challenged the out call but a video review confirmed it and Lee collapsed on his back, before tearing off his top and hurling it into the crowd, followed by his racquet.

On a good day for badminton superpower China, they also won the mixed doubles and women’s doubles crowns.
