IPL 2023, GT vs CSK: Will rain play spoilsport when Gujarat Titans take on Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad? - The Indian Express

When defending champions Gujarat Titans take on Chennai Super Kings in the opening encounter of the Indian Premier League 2023 on Friday, players and fans of both teams will cast a nervous eye skywards with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issuing a forecast of light to moderate rainfall across the state on Friday.

Rainfall was reported in many parts of Gujarat on Thursday morning. This led to the maximum temperature recorded to dip by six degrees below normal temperature.

You can follow our live coverage of the IPL opener between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings here.

However, it remains unlikely that rain will play spoilsport on Friday — when Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium hosts the Opening Ceremony and the IPL 2023 opener between last year’s champions Gujarat and Chennai, who are four-time champions — with AccuWeather showing zero percent chances of precipitation.

On Friday, Ahmedabad is predicted to witness a maximum temperature of 33 degrees during the day, which is expected to dip to 23 between evening and night. Unlike Thursday, chances of thunderstorm in Ahmedabad too have dipped to zero percent, according to the weather forecasting website.

Golden debut for the Philippines - IIHF

It’s been a long wait, but it was worth every moment for the Philippines after winning Division IV gold at the first attempt.

The Asian nation was due to make its first IIHF World Championship appearance back in the 2019/20 season. However, the pandemic prevented that tournament from taking place. The following year was also cancelled and in 2022 the Filipino team had to withdraw prior to the competition in Kyrgyzstan. But all that frustration was forgotten in Ulaanbaatur, Mongolia, as the Philippines swept to gold and promotion to Division IIIB.

Back in competitive action for the first time since December 2019’s Southeast Asia Games, team Philippines wasted no time in making an impact. Just 21 seconds into the opening game against Indonesia, rookie forward Kenwrick Sze got his team’s first goal. The 18-year-old Manila native finished with a hat-trick and four assists in a 14-0 victory in that first game. Sze was one of three hat-trick heroes in that game, with newly-appointed team captain Manvil Billones and Carl Michael Montaro also notching trebles.

However, there was a far tougher test in store for the Philippines when they faced Mongolia. The host nation won its opening game 8-0 against Kuwait, and both teams went into game two knowing a regulation-time win would clinch gold.

That set the stage for a roller-coaster battle. The Philippines led 3-0 at the first intermission, Mongolia hauled it back to 3-3 after 40 minutes. Among the home scorers, Chinzolboo Mighigsuren stepped up from his impressive performance here in the U18 Asia and Oceania Championship tournament a couple of weeks earlier. The 16-year-old potted the first in Mongolia’s fightback here before his father, team captain Mishigsuren Namjil (aged 39) had a goal and an assist to help his country tie the games.

A breathless third period saw the teams share six goals before the action went to overtime. The winner came 72 seconds into the extras, with Billones instrumental in the decisive play. First, he broke clear of the Mongolian defence but saw his shot rebound to safety off the frame of the goal. However, he regained possession and sent a cross-ice feed for Eishner Sebug to beat Munkhbold Bayarsaikhan and win the game. Both Billones and Sebug were born in the USA to Filipino families, and both were making their first international appearances at this tournament after completing the naturalization formalities.

Despite the defeat, the majority of the 3,267 fans who came to the impressive new Steppe Arena in the Mongolian capital could still harbour some hopes of their team grabbing gold. The Philippines needed to defeat Kuwait in its final game to secure top spot. That proved to be a straightforward task, with another 14-0 scoreline ensuring there would be no stumble at the last. Sze got another early opener but it wasn’t until the second period that the floodgates opened. Montano scored another hat-trick, finishing the tournament with 10 (6+4), while Billones had 4 (2+2) to secure firt place in the scoring race with 12 (5+7). John Fuglister, a Swiss-born veteran of the Filipino hockey scene also had 3 (2+1) points in another convincing Filipino victory.

Mongolia wrapped up a silver medal in the final game of the tournament, defeating Indonesia 5-1. For Indonesia, that was a third successive loss in its first IIHF competition. However, the newcomers can take some consolation from a competitive display in a 2-4 loss to Kuwait in what was, in effect, the bronze-medal game.
Among the individual achievements, the Philippines unsurprisingly dominated the scoring chart. The top five scorers – Billones, Sze, Fuglister, Montano and Jan Aro Regencia – all represented the gold medallist, while Sibug’s four-point haul from the blue line made him the top scorer among defenders.

Mongolia’s leading scorers had six points each. Gerelt Ider and Mishigsuren Namjil both finished with two goals and four assists, Erdenesukh Bold contributed 1+5. Kuwait Ali Alsharraf was the leading scorer from the other nations here. Alsharraf also got the nod as the directorate’s best forward of the competition, with Sibug claiming best defender and Mongolian netminder Bayarsaikhan winning the best goalie prize.

The Philippines’ victory sees the team move up to next season’s Division IIIB competition. There, it will renew acquaintance with the Singapore team that inflicted a semi-final defeat at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. That game was played at the SM Mall of Asia rink in Pasay, just south of Manila, which became the main hub for the Filipino hockey community this week as it gathered to watch the action from Mongolia.

"We damn sure needed him tonight" - Darvin Ham is all praise for Austin Reaves, who carried the LA Lakers against the Magic - Sportskeeda

The LA Lakers picked up a crucial 111-105 win over the Orlando Magic on Sunday night, led by second-year shooting guard Austin Reaves. Reaves finished with a game-high and career-high 35 points to go along with six rebounds and six assists on 64.3% shooting.

Following the game, Lakers coach Darvin Ham raved about Reaves’ ability to make big plays in critical moments.

“I thought it was him being his normal self, what he’s been all year. Coming up in clutch moments for us, trying to make plays downhill, putting the defense in uncomfortable positions with his ability to attack the paint and draw fouls. So he was great,” Ham said.
“He's a hell of a player. Happy he's on our team and we damn sure needed him tonight.”

Lakers star forward Anthony Davis added a double-double for LA with 15 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and four blocks.

Meanwhile, Orlando was led by rising stars Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero, who chipped in 21 points apiece.

Following their win, the Lakers (35-37, 10th in the West) have moved back into the final play-in position in the Western Conference. However, they are still tied in winning percentage (48.6%) with the 11th-placed Utah Jazz (34-36). They are also just half a game ahead of the 12th-placed New Orleans Pelicans (34-37).

So LA is not out of the woods just yet.

Meanwhile, Orlando (29-43) remains 13th in the Eastern Conference.

The Lakers will next play on Wednesday against the Phoenix Suns (38-33, fourth in the West). The Magic, meanwhile, will be in action on Tuesday as they take on the Washington Wizards (32-39, 12th in the East).

LA Lakers second-year shooting guard Austin Reaves

Following the LA Lakers’ win over the Orlando Magic, Austin Reaves was asked how it felt to hear MVP chants from Lakers fans in the fourth quarter. Reaves explained that he’s just grateful that his hard work is being recognized.

“Every time I take the court, I play with a sense of urgency. I leave it all out on the floor. Because that’s just how I feel basketball should be played,” Reaves said.
“For them to recognize what I do — obviously not an MVP-caliber player, those guys are really good — but for them to do that for me, it’s special. It means a lot to me. So shout out to Lakers nation.”

Reaves is averaging 11.6 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game this season while shooting 51.3%, including 38.3% from beyond the arc.

Anthony Edwards sprains right ankle, exits early vs. Bulls - NBA.com

Anthony Edwards goes down hard in the 1st quarter.

The Timberwolves have been holding steady out West, just 3.0 games back of fourth place and putting pressure on the Clippers and Warriors for the final two playoff slots.

But avoiding the Play-In Tournament could be tougher without All-Star guard Anthony Edwards, who sprained his right ankle Friday vs. the Bulls. Driving to his right in the 1st quarter, the 21-year-old twisted and rose for a jump bass back toward the left wing, tweaking his right ankle on the landing and immediately crumpling.

After grabbing at the foot and grimacing, Edwards was helped off the floor and initially ruled ‘questionable’ to return before being ruled out at halftime. He played 8:05 before the injury, scoring 8 points on 3-for-4 shooting.

The 2020 No. 1 overall pick had improved for a third straight season, again posting career highs across the board: 25.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.6 steals in 36.4 minutes per game.

How much of Charlotte Hornets does Michael Jordan own? Taking a look at share of majority and minority owners of franchise - Sportskeeda

Michael Jordan is reportedly in talks to sell his majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets. Jordan initially bought into the Hornets ownership group as a minority owner in 2006. Four years later, in 2010, the NBA Hall of Famer reportedly spent $275 million to take over as the majority owner of the franchise, making him the NBA's only black majority owner.

Jordan reportedly sold a 20% stake in the Hornets to Gabe Plotkin, the founder and chief investment officer of Melvin Capital, and Daniel Sundheim, the founder and chief investment officer of D1 Capital, in 2020. The six-time NBA champion reportedly made over $300 million from the sale, while retaining 80% ownership of the franchise.

The Charlotte Hornets are currently valued at $1.77 billion, meaning that Michael Jordan stands to make a tremendous profit on his initial buy-in price, as his 80% should bring him almost $1.5 billion. It is unclear what led to his desire to sell the franchise, however, if the deal goes through, Jordan's 13-year investment will have paid off substantially.

Michael Jordan in talks to sell the Charlotte Hornets, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski

While Michael Jordan has spent the past 13 years as the majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets, the five-time NBA MVP could be looking to sell. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Jordan is engaged in talks to move on from his role as the majority owner, while keeping a minority stake in the team, stating:

"ESPN Sources: Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan is engaged in serious talks to sell a majority stake in the franchise to a group led by Hornets minority owner Gabe Plotkin and Atlanta Hawks minority owner Rick Schnall."
"No deal is imminent, but there’s significant momentum on a sale that would eventually install Plotkin and Schnall as the co-governors of the Hornets, sources said. If sale is completed, Jordan would be expected to keep a minority stake in team."

It is unclear what percentage of the team Jordan, who is widely considered the greatest basketball player of all-time, will look to retain. While he currently owns about 80% of the team, relinquishing his role as majority owner means that he would be selling at least 31% of his stake in the franchise. There is currently no timetable on when a deal could be expected to be completed, or what led to Jordan's decision to consider selling.

Ja Morant Suspended 8 Games From NBA After Waving Gun At Nightclub - Forbes

Topline

The NBA suspended Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant Wednesday for “conduct detrimental to the league,” officials announced Wednesday, after the 23-year-old was taped on an Instagram Live video waving a gun at a Colorado strip club.

Key Facts

Morant will be suspended for the next eight games without pay, leaving him off the court until the Grizzlies’ March 20 game against the Dallas Mavericks—Morant has already missed five games since the incident on March 4.

League officials, who had been investigating the incident, said in a statement they “did not conclude” the gun seen in the video belonged to Morant or that he brought it into the strip club.

Officials also found Morant did not travel with the gun while on the road against the Denver Nuggets, or possess it in an NBA facility.

Key Background

Police in Glendale, Colorado, released a statement on the incident last week, saying they were alerted to it by social media reports. Even though police called the video “disturbing,” they did not receive calls for disturbances at the time of the event, and did not find enough evidence to charge Morant. In the video, Morant had briefly held the gun as he partied inside the club (Colorado has “open carry” laws allowing adults to carry guns without a permit if the person doing so is not intoxicated).

Contra

After the video was posted, Morant said he takes “full responsibility” and that he would “take some time away to get help.” The Grizzlies, who are in second place in the Western Conference, lost their first two games without Morant, but have notched wins in their past two games.

Is Kyrie Irving playing tonight vs. Memphis Grizzlies? Dallas Mavericks' injury report ahead of matchup explored - Sportskeeda

Dallas Mavericks star point guard Kyrie Irving missed their last game on Saturday versus Memphis due to right foot soreness. It now looks like Irving is in danger of missing the Mavs’ rematch versus the Grizzlies on Monday night. This comes as Irving is listed as questionable to play.

Irving once again joins co-star Luka Doncic on the injury report. Doncic has already been ruled out for Monday’s game due to a left thigh strain, which marks his second straight game on the sidelines.

Kyrie Irving - questionable (right foot soreness)
Luka Doncic - out (left thigh strain)

Injuries to Dallas’ stars have come at a bad time. The Mavs are 34-34 and eighth in the West. They are still fighting to secure a playoff spot in the crowded Western Conference. Despite being in a play-in position, Dallas is just one game ahead of the 11th-placed LA Lakers (33-35). This means that the Mavs are in real danger of missing the play-in entirely.

How have the Mavericks fared without Kyrie Irving this season?

In the Mavs’ last game without Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic, the team fell to Memphis 112-108. Dallas is now 29-28 without Irving and 5-6 with him this season. Meanwhile, the team is 3-8 without Doncic and 31-26 with him.

Irving is averaging 27.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, 6.6 assists, 1.2 steals and 3.3 3-pointers per game on 51.2% shooting through 11 games with Dallas.

Doncic is averaging 33.0 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 8.0 apg, 1.5 spg and 2.8 3pg on 50.0% shooting through 57 games.

Dallas will once again be facing a shorthanded Grizzlies team on Monday. The Grizzlies will be without star point guard Ja Morant (personal), starting center Steven Adams (knee), and reserve big man Brandon Clarke (achilles). Memphis are 40-26 and third in the West.
