Stephen Curry fell one three-pointer shy of matching and two shy of surpassing Ray Allen on the NBA's all-time three-point field goal list by making five shoots from long distance in a dramatic 102-100 Golden State Warriors win over the Indiana Pacers on Monday night.
Curry reached 2,972 three-point shots in his already glorious career and had to console himself with waiting until next Tuesday to try to match and then surpass the Hall of Famer who excelled with the Milwaukee Bucks, Seattle SuperSonics (now Oklahoma City Thunder), Boston Celtics and Miami Heat.
With the score tied at 100 points apiece and less than 30 seconds on the clock, Curry attempted a three-pointer to tie the score, but his shot missed the basket, the rebound was grabbed by Kevon Looney who got the game-winning shot that prevented Golden State's first win of the season.
Many mistakes by Curry
The "Chef" was not accurate in the game, because despite his 26 points that made him the scoring leader of his team, he missed 12 of the 20 shots he attempted from the field and 10 of the 15 three-pointers he made, he also had seven turnovers.
The Warriors were down by as many as nine points in the last quarter, but managed to recover to win a vital victory in their aspiration to continue fighting with the Phoenix Suns for the best record in the Western Conference and in the entire NBA.
Other players who stood out in scoring for the Warriors were Andrew Wiggins (15 points), Draymond Green (15 points) and Looney himself (14 points).
Great game by Sabonis
For the losing cause, the great performance of power forward Domantas Sabonis stood out, who accumulated a double-double product of 30 points and 11 rebounds.
Caris LeVert could have tied the game and sent it to overtime, but slipped when he was penetrating to the hoop with less than five seconds to play.
A date with history at Madison Square Garden
The stage was set for Curry to look to break history in the next game for the Warriors (22-5) on Tuesday when they visit the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
For their part, the Pacers (12-17) saw a three-game winning streak come to a halt (all of them at home) and will be looking for a rebound in their next game next Wednesday when they visit the defending champions Milwaukee Bucks.
