LeBron James goes berserk after missed foul call, Patrick Beverley gets technical foul for showing ref camera - Fox News

LeBron James was furious with NBA officials on Saturday night and Patrick Beverley received an untimely technical foul for sarcastically trying to show a referee they missed a call in the final moments of regulation.

In a 105-105 game between the Lakers and the Boston Celtics with about 4 seconds left, James went to his left and drove down the lane toward the basket. James was surrounded by three Celtics defenders and went up to the basket with his left hand and it appeared he was hit on the arm by Jayson Tatum.

James missed the lay up and there was no foul called on the play. The Lakers superstar was beside himself over the no-call and fell to the floor in disbelief.

Beverley, at one point, came over with a camera to show the referee what he missed. He received a technical foul.

The game would go to overtime and Boston would come away with a 125-121 win.

James played 44 minutes. He scored 41 points with nine rebounds and eight assists in the loss. Beverley added 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals. Anthony Davis came off the bench and scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. He also had four assists.

Davis was just as upset after the game.

Crew Chief Eric Lewis admitted after the game the officials missed a call.

Tatum made the technical free throw before the overtime period began. He scored 30 points with 11 rebounds and four assists.

Jaylen Brown scored a team-high 37 points, grabbed nine boards and dished out three assists. He hit a couple of clutch shots to separate Boston from Los Angeles in the overtime period.

Wesley So draws Carlsen, keeps title hopes in Tata Steel Masters - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – World champion Magnus Carlsen and Global Championship titlist Wesley So drew their match on Friday, January 27 (Saturday, January 28, Manila time) to keep their bid going in the 2023 Tata Steel Masters in Wijk ann Zee, the Netherlands.

Handling white, Carlsen, the defending champion and eight-time winner of the event touted as the Wimbledon of Chess, and So, the 2017 edition champion, split the point in a five-hour Nimzo-Indian Defense tussle to stay within sight of pacesetter Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan and second-running Anish Giri of the Netherlands.

Carlsen and So have 6.5 points after 11 rounds, a point behind Abdusattorov and half a point off Giri. The 18-year-old Abdusattorov and Giri also drew their match.

“Game was very difficult, actually I was struggling,” said So. “Magnus isn’t playing his best chess in the tournament but he’s slowly getting his stride… today I think he’s playing perfect chess.”

The Filipino-born So, now representing the United States, tests Abdussatorov’s mettle in the 12th and penultimate round on Saturday, while Carlsen tangles with Indian prodigy R. Praggnanandhaa, who dropped his title bid following a loss to Iranian ace Parham Maghsoodloo.

With 6.0 points and hoping to sweep their last two matches are Team USA’s Levon Aronian and Fabiano Caruana, who also agreed to split the point.

Other 11th-round matches saw Vincent Keymer and Richard Rapport draw their match, and so did world No. 2 Ding Liren of China against 2021 Tata Masters champion Jorden van Forrest of the Netherlands.

In the 12th round, Giri is pitted against Van Foreest, Liren against Rapport, Caruana against Keymer, Aronian against India’s Gukesh D., and Maghsoodloo against India’s Arjun Erigaisi.

Carlsen did press the attack up to the end, but So ably defended to force the draw as the Norwegian superstar had a wrong-colored bishop.– Rappler.com

Jonathan Isaac returns after 904-day injury layoff as Magic stun Celtics in rout - Rappler

Paolo Banchero scored a team-high 23 points and Wendell Carter Jr. finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Orlando Magic to a 113-98 home victory over the short-handed Boston Celtics on Monday night (Tuesday, January 24, Manila time).

Boston was within two points, 97-95, following a Jayson Tatum 3-pointer with 6:20 to play, but the Magic went on a 10-0 run in the next 3:24 to pull away.

It was Orlando’s third victory over Boston in four tries this season. It also ended Boston’s nine-game winning streak.

Cole Anthony came off the bench to score 18 points for Orlando, which received a 15-point performance from Franz Wagner.

Tatum, who missed Boston’s 106-104 victory at Toronto with a sore left wrist, and Jaylen Brown each scored 26 points for the Celtics, who committed 18 turnovers. The Celtics attempted 46 3-pointers and made 18 (39.1 percent).

Boston played without center Robert Williams III (knee), guard Marcus Smart (ankle) and guard Malcolm Brogdon (personal reasons).

Orlando’s Jonathan Isaac, the No. 6 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, returned to action after missing the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The injury occurred in 2020 against the Sacramento Kings during the NBA restart.

Isaac had 10 points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist in 10 minutes.

Orlando closed the first quarter on an 11-4 run and led 30-23 entering the second. Boston trailed 43-29 with 8:13 left in the first half but used a 16-1 spurt to take a 45-44 lead. The Magic had a 55-54 advantage at the end of the first half.

The Celtics led 68-66 with 6:47 remaining in the third quarter when Tatum left the game and went to the locker room holding his ribs. The Magic scored the next 10 points to go up 76-68 with 5:11 left in the quarter.

Tatum returned to the game late in the third, but Orlando carried an 88-79 lead entering the fourth.

The victory improved Orlando’s home record to 12-12. – Rappler.com

Young riders Oconer, Krog join pro team - manilastandard.net

Young riders Jhay Oconer and Luis Krog will be following the footsteps of their parents when they suit up for the Victoria Sports Cycling Team in one of its first international outings—the Tour of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.

Luis Krog

Oconer and Krog hope to earn points and a good placing in this five-day, class 2.2 race slated from Jan. 27 to 31, with their 11-member team.

“Sa one year ko pong pagba-bike, sana po ay maging maganda ang performance ko,” said the 19-year-old Oconer as he seeks to emerge from the shadows of his dad, Norberto Oconer and his brother George.

Oconer and Krog talked about their next cycling journey during Saturday’s team presentation at the Victoria Sports Tower in Quezon City.

The elder Norberto competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics and the 1992 Summer Olympics, while George is currently one of the top riders of the Standard Insurance-Philippine Navy team and is also a member of the national squad.

The 22-year-old Krog is the eldest son of former national women’s rider Marita Lucas and brother of Maritanya Krog, a promising rider, who claimed a gold medal in the girls’ 13-below criterium event of the recent 2022 Batang Pinoy in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

Krog, a silver medalist in the 2018 Asian Cycling Championships Naypyidaw, Myanmar—is ecstatic in his first major international race with an intercontinental team, considering that he would be making his family proud of him as he seek to gain UCI points.

Nineteen professional cycling teams are coming to the UAE tournament, which will have 10 national squads in the Middle East and nine intercontinental teams.

The other Filipino riders of the team are Kelvin Mendoza, Ean Cajucom, Daniel Carino and Jerry Aquino Jr.

They will be led experienced Portuguese riders Jose Mendes, Andre Cardoso, Pedro Paulinho and Pako Ochoa. (see related story on C2).

Philippine Olympic Committee president and Integrated Cycling Federation of the Philippine president chief Rep. Abraham Tolentino hailed the formation of the team, saying that this brings hope to their dream of having a Filipino rider or riders see action someday in the Tour de France.

“This team was our dream before. Victoria is here for the team. Hopefully, may mga Filipinos na makakalaro sa mga major tournaments sa Europe, at makarating sa Tour de France,” said Tolentino.

Sports director Micael Isidoro said that they have formed a very strong team and their exposure in the international scene will help create experiences for them.

Isidoro said they plan to bring the team to international races for the next five months, before they go to Portugal for a series of events there.

Assistant director Rhayzon Galdonez said that he needs the team to bond in their first outing together in the Middle East.

“We’re not focused much on racing when we get there. It’s their training as a team that we’re working on,” said Galdonez.

Lakers News: Darvin Ham Details How LA Held On To Beat Memphis Late - Sports Illustrated

The Los Angeles Lakers have been a part of close games in four of their last five games, and they've fallen short in three of those games. Last night, LA took on the second-sed Memphis Grizzles, and shocker, it was a close game. However, this time, the result favored the Lakers.

LA was bound to win a close game after their past three close games in which they lost; the referee's missed calls may have affected the Lakers

Nonetheless, LA picked up a much-needed win, and head coach Darvin Ham credited the teams' character and fight to snap Memphis' 11-game win streak.

"Once we kept our togetherness, we never got too down. Guys were chirping, talking, communicating, constantly encouraging one another to be better on the defensive glass. The biggest thing, we took care of the ball, we got good shots, we stayed in attack mode, playing downhill. We were able to get to the free throw line ourselves, plus seven in terms of makes, and we were able to make threes."

Even more impressive about the Lakers closing out the game was that LeBron didn't have to go nuclear for LA to win the game. James only had 23 points, nine rebounds, and six assists, while the leading six-man of the year candidate led all scorers with 29 points in 31 minutes, along with five rebounds and six assists.

Six Lakers were in double-figures, and LA was able to make more free throws than the Grizzlies. Ultimately, a TUFF steal resulted in an and-one finish by Dennis Schroder, which sealed the deal.

LA has been scratching and clawing all season long, and last night showed that led by Darvin Ham.

Aces trade two-time Sixth Player of the Year Dearica Hamby to Sparks for Amanda Zahui B. - CBS Sports

The defending champion Las Vegas Aces have agreed to trade two-time Sixth Player of the Year Dearica Hamby to the Los Angeles Sparks in exchange for Amanda Zahui B., the team announced on Saturday. In addition, the Aces will send their 2024 first-round pick to the Sparks and receive the Sparks' 2024 second-round pick.

"Dearica has dedicated eight years of her career to this organization, and played a big role in our success since the team moved to Las Vegas," Aces general manager Natalie Williams said in a statement. "We're going to miss her as a teammate, and are grateful for all of her contributions to the Aces over the years."

Let's grade the trade:

Aces receive

  • Amanda Zahui B.
  • Sparks' 2024 second-round pick

Hamby, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2015 WNBA Draft, had spent her entire career with the Aces franchise dating back to their days in San Antonio. Along the way, she became a vital cog in their title contending teams, winning Sixth Player of the Year in 2019 and 2020 and making the All-Star Game in 2021 and 2022.

It's notable, though, that as they went on their championship run last season, they did so largely without Hamby. She was moved to the bench in August, and a short time later suffered a knee injury that kept her out until the second round of the playoffs. Though she did appear in six postseason games, she only scored seven points in 51 total minutes.

Their playoff success without Hamby, combined with a chance to shed salary seems to be the driving force behind the trade. Zahui B. did not play last season after her contract was suspended by the Sparks, and she is now a free agent. Under the "contract expired -- suspended" designation, the Aces have exclusive negotiating rights with Zahui B. but do not have to sign her. They could just use this as a salary dump, clear Hamby's $169,000 from the books, and then have enough money to chase a max free agent.

It's also worth noting that at the Aces' championship parade, Hamby announced that she was pregnant with her second child, and earlier this month she released a tweet that seemed to take a shot at the Aces. "Imagine expressing your fears as a woman and being pregnant in this profession/world," Hamby wrote. "Then to be reassured that you were supported.. and your back was "had"…. only to then be used against you. Lmao."

How much her pregnancy factored into the decision is unclear, but the two sides were obviously not on the same page heading into the season.

Until we see what else the Aces do, this grade feels incomplete. Zahui B. is not afraid to let it fly from 3 -- though she's been inconsistent from deep in her career -- and would fit into the Aces' five-out system as a big who can space the floor. Trading Hamby and a first for her, however, would be a bad deal for the Aces. But if this is a salary dump and the Aces end up bringing in another star for their title defense, then it could be a great move. Time will tell.

Grade: Incomplete

Sparks receive

  • Dearica Hamby
  • Aces' 2024 first-round pick

Last season was a major disappointment for the Sparks after bringing in some big names in the offseason. Liz Cambage left the team in the middle of the season, Chennedy Carter played sparingly, if at all, Derek Fisher was fired as head coach and general manager and they went 13-23.

They've already begun another massive overhaul that started with hiring Curt Miller as the new head coach in October. Earlier this month they traded for veteran point guard Jasmine Thomas, who spent the past seven seasons playing for Miller with the Sun. With only three guaranteed contracts on the books and nearly $1 million in cap space, they have room to maneuver this winter.

Even given Hamby's pregnancy, this is a strong move and another indication of their intentions: they want to build a veteran squad and get back to the playoffs. Regarding Hamby's status, she said in October that she hopes not to miss much time as long as there are no complications.

"The plan is for me to be back. I'm due in March," Hamby said. "Will I be 100% by the start of the season? If everything goes according to plan, I'll be back pretty close to the start of the season."

Whether her plans change after the trade and how her body handles the birth remains to be seen. The Sparks begin their season on May 19 against the Phoenix Mercury, which may be too soon for Hamby, but all signs point to her playing at some point this season. That would be a huge boost for the Sparks, both on the court and in their pursuit to attract free agents (Candace Parker, perhaps?).

Getting a first-round pick as well, while only giving up a player that didn't suit up for them last season, is a major win for the Sparks. Even if that pick ends up being a late first, it's another swing at the draft, essentially for free. This is all upside, no risk for Los Angeles.

Grade: A

Mavs vs. Heat Preview: Can Struggling Dallas Cool Off Miami? - Sports Illustrated

DALLAS - The Dallas Mavericks look to end a gross three-game losing streak on Friday night at home on national television against the Miami Heat.

Dallas turned the ball over 16 times, including seven turnovers from star Luka Doncic, in Wednesday’s 130-122 loss to the Atlanta Hawks. The Mavs could use a strong defensive performance on Friday, as they have given up at least 130 points in their last three losses.

Meanwhile, Miami has won four of its last five games (including two wins over Milwaukee) and has the fourth best defensive rating in the league.

The matchup is highlighted by two of the NBA's biggest stars in Doncic and Miami's Jimmy Butler. Doncic earned NBA Western Conference Player of the Month in December for posting the highest-scoring month in franchise history. Butler is also performing at a high level, posting 22 points per game on 51 percent shooting from the field with an impressive two steals per game.

The Mavs will be without Christian Wood, who sustained a fracture of his left thumb during the second quarter of Wednesday's game against the Hawks. He will be re-evaluated next week. Look for more playing time for Dwight Powell and JaVale McGee in Wood's absence.

RECORDS: Dallas Mavericks (24-22), Miami Heat (25-21)

WHEN: Friday, January 20, 2023 at 6:30 p.m. CT

WHERE: American Airlines Center (Dallas, TX)

TV: ESPN

RADIO: 97.1 The Freak

ODDS: The Mavs are 1-point underdogs vs. the Heat.

Next Up: The Mavs stay in Dallas to host the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. CT. The tip-off time was moved because of the Dallas Cowboys Divisional Round matchup vs. the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday at 5 p.m. CT.

FINAL WORD: On Wednesday, Doncic denied pushing the front office to make changes to the current roster:

“Obviously, people who are next to me – who I talk to – they know that [report] is not true," Doncic said. "I didn’t say anything about that. I talk to Nico [Harrison]. I talk to Fin [Michael Finley] more than I used to. That’s just the way I talk to them. We have great communication [and] that just stays between us.”

Renejay plays stand-in for Blacklist in Sibol qualifiers, joins hands with Oheb, Edward, Hadji - Manila Bulletin

Former Nexplay Evos star Renejay “RENEJAY” Barcase is set to play under the Blacklist International banner as a stand-in for the Sibol national team qualifiers and join the MVP trio of Edward “Edward” Dapadap, Salic “Hadji” Imam and Kiel “Oheb” Soriano.

Photo from Blacklist International

The four will join amateur standout Ian Jakob “Rindo” Seguiran for the second phase of the Sibol qualifiers where the M4 World Championship runners-up got a direct invite alongside ECHO, and representatives of the Collegiate Center for Esports and Real Me Cup.

“Our team for the upcoming SEA Games MLBB qualifiers will include our very own MV3—Edward, Oheb, and Hadji, joined by Renejay “Renejay” Barcarse and Ian Jakob “Rindo” Seguiran,” Blacklist said in its announcement on Friday, Jan. 20.

However, Blacklist head coach Kristoffer “Bon Chan” Ricaplaza clarified to Manila Bulletin that Renejay will only be playing as a stand-in. The MVP trio’s inclusion to the Sibol roster does not also mean that Hadji, Oheb and Edward are sitting out the MPL Philippine Season 11.

According to Bon Chan, the three are still undecided whether to play for MPL or sit out the season similar to what Jonmar “OhmyV33nus” Villaluna and Danerie “Wise” Del Rosario did back in Season 9 where they decided to take a one-season hiatus.

“Wala pa silang final decision sa S11, ang gusto lang nila sa ngayon SEA Games,” said Bon Chan in a message. As for Renejay, “Stand-in lang for Sibol quali,” he added.

Whether Renejay will see action for Blacklist in the MPL is still up in the air although the popular player had already bid goodbye to his team Nexplay Evos

Tier One Entertainment top honcho Tryke Gutierrez earlier revealed that the Blacklist management talked to each player and gave them the option to rest or compete in MPL PH S11 and SEA Games qualifier.

Looking to avenge the stunning loss for Blacklist in M4, the V33Wise tandem committed to play for Blacklist for the MPL PH S9.

“For the upcoming MPL PH Season 11, our superstar duo of Johnmar “Ohmyv33nus” Villaluna and Danerie James “Wise” del Rosario have confirmed their decision to play under Blacklist International,” said in the post.

“Please stay tuned for the announcement of our full roster for the upcoming season. Our redemption story starts today. We know you’ve got our backs, agents. In the words of our captain, “This still is not the last of us,” the announcement added.

Topex Robinson named as new La Salle men’s basketball coach

Topex Robinson has been named as the new head coach of the De La Salle men’s basketball team, the school announced Thursday, Jan. 19.

Topex Robinson will fill in the shoes of Derrick Pumaren as new head coach of the De La Salle men’s basketball team.

“De La Salle University is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Christopher ‘Topex’ Robinson as head coach of the men’s basketball team effective today, Jan. 19, 2023,” the statement read.

Robinson will fill in the shoes of Derrick Pumaren, who guided the Green Archers from 2020 until last year.

The school also extended its gratitude for Pumaren’s dedication.

Robinson will carry a wide experience in coaching a collegiate team after having mentored San Sebastian College in the NCAA from 2011 to 2014, and Lyceum, from 2015 to 2019.

He steered both teams to championship series, with San Sebastian in 2011 and with Lyceum in 2018.

While coaching in the collegiate scene, he was also assistant for Phoenix Super LPG from 2017 to 2020 before being elevated as head coach in 2020 until the recent Commissioner’s Cup.

Did you know that several World Cup champions hail from this Argentinian agricultural town? - Manila Bulletin

Did you know that several World Cup champions hail from this Argentinian agricultural town?

The agricultural region of Pampas in Argentina is not only home to world-renowned beef and corn, but it is where some of Argentina’s famous football champions started their journeys.

From the Argentina football team’s coach to the top striker, several players in the country’s winning roster are from the agricultural towns in Pampas. Even one of England team’s top defenders, Lisandro Martinez, also hails from a province in Pampas.

Photo: Pixabay

Local sports news writer Eduardo Sacheri noted that this year’s roster, mostly from agricultural towns, is a significant shift from the previous years’ composition of players, mostly from cities.

Pampas is a fertile region in South America producing corn, wheat, soybeans, and other crops for export. Most of the Pampas region is within the country of Argentina, where its vast grasslands also make it home to Argentina’s cow farms.

The homecoming of Pampas’ World Cup heroes provided a morale boost to farmers grappling with their third consecutive year of drought and hope for more government support to rural communities.

Keys to the Game: Celtics 107, Bulls 99 - NBA.com

Key Moment

Al Horford entered Monday night as the NBA’s leading scorer from the right corner. It was only fitting, then, that he scored from that location with 25.5 seconds left to secure another victory for the Boston Celtics.

With Boston leading by only two during the final minute, the Chicago Bulls swarmed Jayson Tatum with a double-team on the right wing to get the ball out of his hands. Tatum patiently accepted the double and calmly dished a bounce-pass to Horford, who was open in the right corner. Horford caught the ball and fired up a 3-pointer that, after touching every bit of the rim, eventually fell through the net to push Boston ahead by five.

That shot sealed the victory, but Tatum still had some icing to put on the cake. Derrick White grabbed a rebound after the C’s forced a miss out of Zach LaVine on Chicago’s ensuing possession, and he then found Tatum leaking out for a fast break. Tatum took one dribble and rose up for a dunk that he awkwardly flushed home while being fouled by Alex Caruso.

Tatum knew that was the exclamation point on the win, as was evidenced by his emotional scream to the crowd following the dunk.

He went on to drop in the free throw to cap off his 32-point night and Boston’s 107-99 victory over Chicago.

Key Player

Have yourself a night, Grant Williams!

Williams was so excellent Monday night that he earned the second-most minutes on the entire team at 37, trailing only Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown’s 38 apiece. He was outstanding across the board while totaling 20 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and one assist.

Boston’s reserve big man typically gets his scoring done from beyond the arc, but on Monday, he caught his rhythm from inside the 3-point line. Williams scored his first four baskets of the night from inside the paint, where he shot a perfect 5-for-5 on the night. He eventually connected from long distance during the third quarter before adding two more triples in during the final frame. Williams shot 8-for-15 overall on the night and scored nine points during the decisive fourth quarter.

Box Score Nuggets

  • Jayson Tatum led the game with 32 points, and led the Celtics with eight rebounds and seven assists.
  • Grant Williams came off the bench to tie Tatum for the team lead in rebonds with eight, while also scoring 20 points.
  • Boston's largest lead was 16 points, while Chicago's was just three.
  • The Celtics won despite shooting just 43.7 percent from the field and 26.8 percent from long distance.
  • Jaylen Brown logged 19 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists.
  • Zach LaVine led Chicago with 27 points and six assists.
  • Boston was nearly perfect from the free-throw line, where it made 20 of its 21 attempts.
  • Boston out rebounded Chicago 50-42 despite Bulls big man Nikola Vucevic leading the game with 13 boards.
  • The Celtics' bench outscored Chicago's 34-22.

Aussie wildcard Destanee Aiava has scored a first-round win in the Australian Open 2023 women's qualifying singles competition.

Melbourne, Australia, 9 January 2023 | Leigh Rogers

Destanee Aiava has made a winning start to her Australian Open 2023 qualifying campaign.

The Aussie wildcard struck 20 winners to three in a 6-3 6-3 victory against Turkey’s Ipek Oz in first-round action at Melbourne Park today.

“I’m so happy. It’s my first Grand Slam match for a while and I’m just happy to get the win,” Aiava said after defeating the world No.180.

“I didn’t put too much expectation on myself. I just wanted to go out and implement what I’ve been doing in training.”

This is Aiava’s first Grand Slam-level victory since Australian Open 2020, when she reached the final qualifying round.

While the world No.325 hopes to earn a main-draw spot this week, she is keeping her expectations measured.

“I’m just looking to have fun this week,” she said. “This is my favourite tournament of the year and I’m just super grateful to Tennis Australia for giving me a chance to compete in the qualifying.”

Aiava has been ranked as high as world No.147, but struggled with her mental health last season and did not compete overseas.

Since bravely sharing her struggles, Aiava has been quietly building some impressive momentum.

She has now won eight of her past nine matches, having scooped an Australian Pro Tour title at Traralgon in November. It was the 22-year-old’s fifth career ITF singles title – and first in more than three years.

“I’m definitely coming into this (week) with a bit of confidence from my last tournaments,” she said. “I’ve been training heaps and playing some AMT doubles with a friend as well, just to keep my match fitness going. So yeah, I’m feeling good.”

Zoe Hives’ comeback is also gaining momentum. The 26-year-old Australian, who has dealt with a number of health concerns over the past few years, scored a 6-2 5-7 6-1 first-round victory today against France’s Harmony Tan.

Tan created worldwide headlines when she defeated Serena Williams at Wimbledon last year, but couldn’t wear down Hives in their two-hour and 14-battle at Kia Arena.

Australian hopes Arina Rodionova, Seone Mendez and Kaylah McPhee are all scheduled to play their first-round qualifying matches later today.

Tickets to attend Australian Open 2023 qualifying are just $5 for kids and $10 for adults. Fans will also be able to see some of the world’s top-ranked players compete in practice matches at Melbourne Park.

Knicks Disappoint In First NBA All-Star Voting Returns - How Can Fans Help? - Sports Illustrated

For the New York Knicks, it must feel like 2011 all over again: Derrick Rose is considered All-Star material while RJ Barrett, Jalen Brunson, and Julius Randle are nowhere to be found.

That's how the first round of NBA All-Star voting has shaken out for the Knicks, who had only one representative in the first public returns. With the NBA unveiling the top ten vote-earners in each conference's position group, Rose was the only Manhattanite among the 40, placing ninth among Eastern Conference guards (220,229 votes).

Barring ballot box stuffing by Chicago Bulls fans ... who warmly welcomed the 2011 MVP back to United Center during the Knicks' visits in December ... or fans trying to give the 34-year-old one last All-Star appearance before retiring (which he has made no indication is imminent), it's hard to pinpoint a concrete reason for Rose's apparent popularity. He has been in and out of the Knicks' reserve rotation all season due to medical and coaching decisions and is averaging 5.8 points and 1.8 assists over 12.9 minutes a game. All of those would be career-lows if not for a nine-game stint in Minnesota in 2018.

Despite his rollercoaster season and rumors of a trade lingering over him, Rose has handled the situation with class, insisting he has no issue with the way the lineup has worked out and appreciating his newfound role as a mentor.

New York City does have a prominent role in the first returns, albeit from the Brooklyn side: Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving respectively lead the East's frontcourt and guard categories, their statuses no doubt boosted by the Nets' recent 12-game winning streak, good for the longest in the NBA this season. At over three million votes, Durant is the East's leading candidate and second overall behind LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers. James leads the Western Conference's frontcourt votes while Golden State's Stephen Curry is on top of guards.

While Barrett dealt with a slow start and an ongoing medical absence due to a finger laceration, it's surprising to see Brunson and Randle miss out on early votes entirely. Brunson has lived up to one of the offseason's most talked-about contracts, a four-year, $104 million deal, to the tune of 20.8 points and 6.5 assists per game (the latter good for 15th in the Association). Randle, on the other hand, has been a dominant force for the Knicks over the last month: since Dec. 4, Randle has averaged 28.4 points and 12.2 rebounds a game and the Knicks have gone 11-5 in that span, tied for fourth-best in the NBA. He's looking for his second All-Star nomination after previously repping the Knicks in 2021.

Knicks fans have a chance to do their part on Friday before their squad faces the Toronto Raptors on the road (7:30 p.m. ET, MSG): Friday voting is a "3-for-1" day, where ballots count triple. Fan votes consist of 50 percent of the lineup determination for the game (NBA players and a media panel equally make up the latter half) and can be performed at the NBA's official site.

The 2023 NBA All-Star Game will be held on Feb. 19 at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, thhe home of the Utah Jazz.

Malaysia cruise past Singapore to set up Thailand semi-final clash - Reuters.com

Jan 3 (Reuters) - Malaysia handed Singapore a 4-1 thrashing in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday to set up an Asean Championship semi-final meeting with defending champions Thailand while Vietnam will take on Indonesia after their 3-0 victory over Myanmar in Hanoi.

The Malaysians will face Group A winners Thailand after a brace from Stuart Wilkin as well as efforts from Darren Lok and Sergio Aguero saw Kim Pan-gon's side win and leapfrog over the Singaporeans into second place in Group B.

Vietnam topped the group after Kyaw Zin Lwin's early own goal and a second from Nguyen Tien Linh sent the 2018 champions on their way to way to a comfortable win that maintained their unbeaten record in this year's tournament.

The Vietnamese will next take on Indonesia in the first leg of the semi-finals in Jakarta's Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Jan. 6 with Malaysia hosting Thailand in Kuala Lumpur a day later.

The second legs of the semi-finals will be played on Jan. 9 and 10 respectively with the final to be held on a home-and-away basis on Jan. 13 and 16.

Malaysia were convincing winners over neighbours Singapore at Bukit Jalil Stadium with Lok heading in the opener from close range follow Safawi Rashid's cross from the right 10 minutes before the interval.

Wilkin doubled the lead five minutes after the restart with a low strike from distance and, four minutes later, he added his side's third when he turned before shooting into the bottom corner.

Faris Ramli pulled one back for Singapore in the 85th minute only for Aguero to restore Malaysia's three-goal cushion two minutes from time.

Vietnam had few issues advancing to the next phase of the Southeast Asian tournament, Kyaw Zin Lwin scoring an own goal in the eighth minute and Tien Linh doubling the advantage 19 minutes later from close range.

Chau Ngoc Quang scored from distance to register the first international goal of his career in the 72nd minute to seal the win that takes Park Hang-seo's side into the last four.
