PBA Chairman Ricky Vargas of TNT suggested on Friday that the PBA stage a best-of-seven series between an all-star selection and the Chinese national team before it tips off its 46th season.
Quoted in an article released by the league, Vargas, who is in his fourth term as Chairman, said that he wishes former Gilas Pilipinas head coach Yeng Guiao to lead the selection he dubbed the "PBA Warriors."
"I think he would be perfect to lead a courageous charge for national pride and honor," explained Vargas on Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor).
He added that the league should take the initiative of spearheading towards a "semblance of normalcy."
"I would like to see Season 46 jump started with this exhibition match, the technical aspects of which could be crafted by our tournament officials. We need to give our people inspiration and hope. I will even join the team in their 'friendlies'," mentioned Vargas.
The TNT governor, though, admitted that the first order of business for the league should be the vaccination of all players in order to start the Philippines' recovery from COVID-19.
PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial said in an earlier interview that the league will be procuring "2,000-3,000" doses of the Moderna vaccine courtesy of the Philippine Red Cross, and an additional 1,500 doses from the MVP Group. The vaccines are expected to arrive in May, per vaccine czar Carlito Galvez, Jr.
"We need to rally our people towards a common goal. Let us all sacrifice for the greater good and for a stronger PBA. We will pivot, deliver, transform and perform," said Vargas.
