The Philadelphia 76ers had a tough ending to their 2020-21 season when they dropped Game 7 at home to the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday, but if there was one real bright spot outside of Joel Embiid, it was the play of Seth Curry.
Curry, taking advantage of being a starter for the first time in his career, averaged 12.5 points and he shot 45% from deep during the regular season. He then followed that up by shooting 50.6% from deep in the playoffs and he shot 59.6% from deep in Round 2, specifically, against the Atlanta Hawks.
Not only that, but Curry was also able to show off other aspects of his game. He was able to put the ball on the floor and he tied a career-high 2.7 assists as he was able to run the two-man game with Embiid and even Ben Simmons at times.
“Seth is improving before our eyes which I think is super exciting,” said team president Daryl Morey. “A testament to him and what Doc’s (Rivers) been able to do.”
While Curry is not an All-Star player, he is still a very capable player. The job for Morey and company now is to continue to add to their roster and continue to move forward on their title quest.
“Obviously, we’d love to have All-Stars at every position, right?” he stated. “We have to see what’s out there. We can’t overreact to anything that just happened but you also can’t under-react. I know that sounds like GM speak because it is but it’s also true.”
Morey was able to make a smart draft-night trade in the 2020 offseason when he was able to move Josh Richardson to bring Curry here. That move did pay off for the Sixers and now the challenge for the 2021 offseason is to be able to go out there and make another deal to ultimately win a championship.
“We have to make the decisions that are best that are available over this offseason with free agency trade and draft and if we go in with like we have to do X I know that doesn’t work,” Morey finished. “You can’t go in and say, we need exactly this. If you do that, you’ll fail because you need a whole set of options and then pick the one that optimizes your championship odds. I thought we did a good job, not a great job at doing that last year and we need to do a great job this offseason.”
Curry was a great addition to the roster to help Simmons and Embiid compete for a championship, but at the end of the day, he was not enough. Morey will have to add another similar addition in order to get the job done.
