Kaya-Iloilo was denied an elusive point for the third and final time in the AFC Champions League after closing out its inaugural campaign Sunday, July 11 with a 1-0 defeat to Vietnamese side Viettel at the Leo Stadium in Pathum Thani, Thailand.

Reduced to nine men after Simone Rota and Masa Omura were given red card bookings in a matter of minutes, Kaya conceded the eventual winner courtesy of Brazilian striker Caique near the hour mark to finish its continental stint having lost all six matches in Group F.

It was a frustrating end for Kaya which slowly showed some improvements after losing 12-1 to BG Pathum United, Viettel and defending Champions League titleholder Ulsan Hyundai in the first three matches.

But Kaya showed some fight in the latter part of the competition, falling short of holding Ulsan and Pathum United to a draw after 2-1 and 1-0 defeats in the last few days.

Kaya was again in a good position to possibly produce a draw this time despite Viettel controlling most of the possession.

But the tide soon turned when Rota was sent off for the second time in the ACL with a straight red in the 53rd for a foul on Trong Hoang near the edge of the box. Replays, however, showed that the Kaya defender didn’t commit any move that warranted such booking.

Things went from bad to worse when Kaya lost Omura for a foul on the same Viettel in the 55th, opening the door for Caique to come through with the only goal of the match.

With the Champions League done, Kaya is hoping that the lessons and gains during the two-week stay in Thailand will be beneficial for the club’s campaign in the Philippines Football League which could start late next month.
