After spending 10 days with the USA basketball team in Las Vegas, Kevin Love has withdrawn from the upcoming Olympic Games and has cited fitness concerns as the primary reason.
The Cleveland Cavaliers power forward had a difficult season in which his performances were a level below what was expected. It was a surprise, then, when it was announced that Love would be a starter for the US team at the Tokyo Olympics,
Now, though, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Friday that the player's agent Jeff Schwartz has confirmed Love's withdrawal.
"I am incredibly disappointed to not be heading to Tokyo with Team USA, but you need to be at absolute peak performance to compete at the Olympic level and I am just not there yet," Love said in a statement.
A right calf injury kept Love on the sidelines for much of the last season and his withdrawal has left Team USA with just five healthy players from the list of 12 which coach Gregg Popovich gave for the tournament.
Two players will now be replaced after Love and Bradley Beal withdrew from the Olympics and that has to happen before the opening game on July 25.
