Tokyo Olympians, medal-winning boxers to receive more incentives from PH govt. - CNN Philippines

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 9) – President Rodrigo Duterte announced the grant of additional cash incentives for the three winning boxers and non-medalists who competed for the country in the Tokyo Olympics.

Duterte made the announcement during the virtual courtesy call of boxers Nesthy Petecio, Carlo Paalam, Eumir Marcial, and Irish Magno, who arrived home on Monday afternoon.

"You went to Tokyo to fight and I, well, say that you did your best and the Filipino people appreciate it, especially bringing honor to the country," said Duterte.

All of the additional monetary incentives for the Filipino Tokyo Olympians came from the budget of the Office of the President, Duterte said.

For winning the Olympic silver medal, the President gave an additional ₱2 million cash reward to Petecio and Paalam. This is on top of the ₱5 million incentive granted Olympic silver medalists under Republic Act 10699, or the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act.

Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Marcial will receive an additional ₱1 million cash incentive, aside from the ₱2 million reward from the government for Olympic bronze medalists as stipulated in the same law.

Duterte also announced that the Tokyo Olympics medalists will be conferred the Order of Lapu-Lapu.

"(The Order of Lapu-Lapu) is an honor given by the Republic of the Philippines to those who have excelled in something and brought honor to the country," said the President.

Magno and other athletes who failed to win a medal in the Tokyo Games will each receive ₱200,000 and a presidential citation from the government, Duterte added.

The Philippines is fresh from its best-ever Olympic campaign since joining the quadrennial international sporting competition in 1924, after winning one gold, two silvers, and one bronze. Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz lifted the country's first Olympic gold medal, while the three boxers won the three other medals.
