A Ben Simmons trade to the Golden State Warriors is apparently no longer a thing because it never really was a thing to begin with.
Anthony Slater of The Athletic reported Thursday that there was never a "realistic" trade for the Philadelphia 76ers All-Star on the table. The closest that a trade came to happening was on draft night when the Sixers were asking for outlandish packages in return for a player who didn't want to take an easy dunk in a pivotal playoff game.
We're well aware that less than 24 hours ago, another report indicated there was a split in the organization between one camp interested in bringing in the disgruntled Sixers player and another that isn't so interested. Slater addressed the conflicting reports immediately in the start of his piece.
"The Warriors front office isn't currently split on whether or not to accept a Ben Simmons trade offer from Philadelphia," he wrote. "There isn't — and has never been — a realistic one on the table for them to discuss. Talks can't be considered dead because they've never even really been alive, multiple sources confirm."
Of course, it's worth noting that things could change in the future, as annoying as that is to write for the umpteenth time. The Warriors have repeatedly, publicly acknowledged their desire to compete for a championship this season, and if they get desperate, they certainly have the pieces to make a deal (assuming Philadelphia stops asking for ridiculous hauls).
But for now, at least, Simmons is definitely not heading to the Bay Area.
