Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 2) – The Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals survived the late game rally of the Lyceum Pirates, 70-69, to notch their first win in NCAA Season 97 on Saturday at the La Salle Greenhills Gym.
The Generals were stuck at 70 points in the last four minutes of the game as the Pirates stepped up their offense with clutch shots from Enoch Valdez and Renzo Navarro.
Lyceum guard Omar Larupay converted a layup with 1:35 remaining in the game to trim their deficit to a point.
The Pirates went unlucky in the last possessions as Navaro and Mac Guadana missed their open buckets at the paint.
EAC also had their chances to close out the game under the last 20 seconds, but playmaker Marwin Taywan and big man Allen Liwag muffed their inside shots as well.
Guadana received the final inbound play and continued his struggles after a missed three-point shot that could have steal the win for Lyceum.
Taywan led EAC in scoring with 14 points and eight assists while JP Maguliano finished with a double-double of 13 markers and 11 rebounds for the Generals, who are now out of the pit in the team standings with a 1-2 slate.
JM Bravo produced 12 points for Lyceum while marquee players Navarro and Valdez settled for nine points each as they were stuck at the bottom and still winless at 0-3.
EAC seeks to stretch their winning ways against College of St. Benilde on Tuesday at 3 p.m., while Lyceum will tangle with fellow winless squad Jose Rizal University on Wednesday noon.
