Previewing Penn
In women's epee, Chloe Daniel and Jessica Liang both return after surpassing 100 career bout wins last season, claiming first team and second team All-Ivy honors, respectively.
Sabrina Cho, Grace Hao, and Justina Lam all return for the foilists after each picking up 30 bout wins. Hao enters this season 13 bout victories shy of 100 for her career.
In women's sabre, Amber White returns from a first team All-Ivy season that included victories in two-thirds of her bouts, picking up 40 wins in all. Vivian Lu also returns following a 32-15 campaign that included an 11-7 performance at the Ivy Round-Robins.
On the men's side, three graduated epeeists leave the group with five underclassmen returners, all with 25 career wins or fewer. Isaac Herbst leads the group with 25 wins, followed closely by Arthur Andreev and Hugh Milam with 21 wins each.
In foil, Canadian Olympian Blake Broszus won 54 bouts last season in his first season of collegiate competition, the most of any Penn fencer, male or female, earning second team All-Ivy recognition. Emerson Blutt won 23 bouts and enters this season 25 victories shy of 100 for his career.
With nearly 100 combined bout victories between them, senior sabreists Raymond Zhao and Enzo Bergamo will lead three fellow returners following the graduation of Xiteng Lin (125 career bout victories).
Seven male newcomers and two female newcomers join the returning Quakers from last season, looking to make an immediate impact on the program.
What's in Store
Penn will be joined at Temple by the men's and women's teams from Boston College, Bryn Mawr, Columbia, Drexel, Fairleigh Dickinson, Florida Haverford, Johns Hopkins, Navy, North Carolina, Northwestern, NYU, Penn State, Princeton, Rowan, Rutgers, and Swarthmore, as well as the men's team from Cornell. The club teams from Penn State, Temple and North Carolina will also be competing.
The event should provide a formidable challenge for the Quakers, with six of the Top 20 men's and women's teams from last season's final United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) rankings coming to Philly, including three of the top five women's teams and five of the top 10 men's squads.
