Alas Pilipinas yields to China in AVC Challenge Cup for Men opener - Manila Bulletin

Alas Pilipinas couldn’t find the winning touch as it dropped its opening game against China, 19-25, 22-25, 22-25, in the AVC Challenge Cup for Men in Isa Town, Bahrain on early Monday, June 3 (Manila time).

The Filipinos led for some parts of the game but just couldn’t pull away entirely from the mighty Chinese side in a well-fought affair.

Joshua Umandal and Leo Ordiales powered Alas Pilipinas in the offensive end with 10 points each, with skipper Marck Espejo posting eight markers in the losing cause.

The Filipinos pulled themselves within two, 21-23, in the third set for a last-ditch effort to extend the match.

However, the Chinese refused to be dragged into another set and sealed the victory just right after Jade DIsquitado’s crosscourt attack.

Alas Pilipinas resumes action the following day on early Tuesday (Manila time) in a must-win game against tournament host Bahrain.

Only the top two sides from each pool will progress to the crossover quarterfinal, a loss will mean automatic qualification for the Filipinos as they will be relegated to the 9th to 12th place classifications.
